    The People’s Democratic Congress

The People’s Democratic Congress (PDC)presently uses this medium to so graciously thank the Almighty for having allowed Barbadians and others the opportunity to experience and conduct another wonderful election campaign in Barbados, and for having allowed us – Barbadians and others – the opportunity to witness the formation of another government of the country.

Also, we use this medium to so gratefully thank the people of Barbados, and esp. those of St. Michael North and St Michael North West Constitencies, for accomodating members and friends of the PDC in their homes, shops, bars and in other regards, for their learned political and moral advice and counsel given to us, for their well wishes and congratulations rendered to us, and for whatever other forms of support lent to us during our recent quest to represent the people of Barbados, and esp. those in the aforementioned constituencies, in the House of Assembly of the Parliament of Barbados.

Also, we would also like to express our heartiest thanks to our respective families and friends for their very important political and moral advice, counsel, and support, and heartfelt thanks, too, to those members and associates of the People’s Democratic Congress for their very significant political activities and endeavours undertaken and general support given during our recent bid to enter the House of the Assembly of the Parliament of Barbados.

Finally, we in the PDC plege our commitment to continue serving unswervingly the people of Barbados, esp. the masses and middle classes, to the best of our talents, abilities, and judgements, very much in the quest to make Barbados a better and brighter place, and a world class society, ALL in the name of the Almighty.

  2. there is something about this whole DLP victory and thing that is not ringing true to me. I dont feel any freshness or any such thing. What I feel is fear of the future which might be a normal reaction but something is not ringing true here. There is something about this CHANGE that does not comfort me. I think we are in for a rough ride. The first 100 days have been identified as a period for fulfilling certain promises. What of the second 100 days. Somebody talk to me -please somebody enligthen me

Looks like the BLP supporters will now turn to the blogs to help to be an effective opposition. We welcome them

ha ha ha ha ha indeed indeed.

  4. Interesting that Thompson elected to have his swearing in ceremony in a public place which embraced the PEOPLE. Interesting that the ceremony embraced many religions and promoted the idea of the spiritual dimension of our life. There was recognition of those physically challenged’; a blind person played a part, there was the arts, song – a cohoblopot of activities.

A good way to start the journey…

  5. Robot you are not suppose to have feeling. You are a robot, remember.

  6. “David // January 20, 2008 at 7:11 pm

Interesting that Thompson elected to have his swearing in ceremony in a public place which embraced the PEOPLE.”

It didn’t embrace me because I didn’t watch it and neither did I vote for him.

And in case you are not aware, I think the BLP has already done the public swearing in ceremony thing from as far back as 1994. I might be wrong, because I only have a vague memory of passing by and happening to see some public church thing on TV after some past BLP election victory.

  7. Hi all, as a young, Christian, Barbadian woman I felt very proud to be at the ceremony this evening. This is the 1st time in my life that I can recall ever feeling this sense of joy and as if I was an important part of this island. Some out there might want to cry down my feeling but I can assure you that that was a feeling that noe can take away from you. I also wanted to share how it felt to really listen and sing the words of our National Anthem and really hear the message that it contains, the pride and dignity, and just a sense of where we have come from; I have never really examined the words that I sing almost every week and I know that I am not alone in that.

  8. Baps,

“Hi all, as a young, Christian, Barbadian woman I felt very proud to be at the ceremony this evening. This is the 1st time in my life that I can recall ever feeling this sense of joy and as if I was an important part of this island.”

So in all your young years your family, your church and your religion have never made you feel joy or feel important?

You are either a very “lie-ed” yardfowl or a person in dire need of emotional help, cause you may not experience such joy again for another five years…. at best.

Then again, maybe you young people never took time before to pay attention to the important things which shape the social fabric of this sweet island we call home.

    Long Knife @ . b . f . p . e .

    Good question Longknife

My question is in relation to

    =======================
I hope that she like most Bajans are singing the second line of the chorus properly and not singing a held note where there is no held note.

We loyal sons and daught [held note] ters all

These fields and hills beyond recall [no held note at beyond recall]

Most Bajans are still singing it incorrectly after 40 years.

Has anyone thought of the implications of the Governor general attending a service in praise of the DLP. Thompson should never have invited him to the service. He could have left after the swearing in. With philip greaves tipped to be the new GG are we politicising the office of the GG

  11. David see how you could have a laugh at the goofs of the cabinet? If it was done in private you would have missed all the fun.

Baps don’t let these people put you down. We all get to live one moment at a time and some don’t get to draw a next breath. Enjoy all your moments. I watched it on TV and felt that the country is off to a good start for the next five year period. Every one really has to play a part. Think about it.

Donald duck you seem to enjoy sour grapes.

Could you see the queen of england attending an ecumenical service to celebrate the labour party in england. it just won’t happen. The head of state has to be independent from the government

  13. Donald Duck, Esq~Barbadians through its short existence of Independence has made a reputation by being a world leader in many areas, belying its size. Don’t bring comparisons to our colonial past. Have a look at our flag and the broken trident and jog your memory as to the symbolic nature of it all.

We need to start the process to energize our people to a new way of thinking. Remember that our rich legacy and future generations compels you to do it!

Did you not notice that all members of the cabinet all swore allegiance to the Queen. The dlp said nothing in their manifesto about doing away with the queen as queen of Barbados

Donald Duck, Esq~yet again you are bulls-eye in your observation but way off the mark in your effort to attribute significance to it. It might just come down to a matter of priorities. Have you thought of it in that light?

It is significant that the dlp made no mention of Barbados becoming a republic. They opposed the move to republic status. They can’t come now and change their mind

  17. I don’t mind the nay-sayers, the disenchanted political yard fowls or the critics. I will not allow you to undermine the point I was trying to make. The ceremony brought home the point to me as a young person the feeling that yes I do make a difference and that I do play an integral part in this beautiful island. This in no way has anything to do with the feelings my family or my religion create. I felt PROUD, and I understood the pride that the some of my ancestors possible felt in the National Anthem, etc and what they represent and mean.

  18. Wishing in Vain, and all the other who say that Kellman was offered a position etc.

“Kellman dismissed rumours he had been offered a ministry and the position of Speaker, but said he would continue to pursue his constituency objectives in Parliament.”

    http://www.nationnews.com/story/11070785842182.php

Thompson, might have you guys fooled that he is this great man, but I see him as just a power hungry man who will stop and try to destroy anyone who does not strike up the band to his tune. (if later I prove to be wrong I will gladly come here and admit it) Even if he had offered him a “shabby” ministry and he had refused – that would have made thompson look a little better, this is his first mistake, he is trying to – put Kellman in his place. Men like Kellman die before they let anyone make a fool out of them.

  19. Actually men with the disposition of Kellman don’t make good team members, management 101. Remember that it was your Prime Minister who echoed that politics is a blood sport. We seem to remember that Thompson was described by Harold Hoyte as devoid of rascality. David Thompson has shown in his early decision making that he is not afraid to make the unpopular decisions. In this regard he is following in the footsteps of many of his predecessors.

  20. Remember that it was your Prime Minister who echoed that politics is a blood sport….
    **************

BU, are you now showing you true colour, seems that everyone is soft on David Thompson, and softer on the DLP government in general, of the DLPites I like Kellman the most (he speaks his mind with out looking over his shoulder) he does not really need the money like some of the others he is not “hand to mouth” he has that business and other housing investments, but it is the principle. I am bajan and live here so I wish Thompson the best and hope he builds on what Owen did, and makes greater strikes also. But when the King is naked some one has to tell him, that is why he should have Kellman and his Kellmanotics closer to him. His decisions seem to be rooted at getting back at Kellman for not supporting him at times.

  21. Question – The government workers that the last administration were trying to appoint, which that present gov’t and the trade unions opposed (constitution etc..) will they still be appointed or will they be in the wilderness? I know some gov’t and statutory workers whom are doing like 4 & 5 yrs, bills and mortgages etc and getting scared.

Can any one with the facts shed any light on this?

You mean just like Owen? Owen had a choir, Thompson has a band – I love it!

The DLP cabinet was sworn in yesterday and already Undertaker thinks everyone is being too soft on them. This is great comedy.

  23. Our good friend Undertaker, we are quite use to the jabs nowadays when we have to offer-up a dissenting position. We agree with all that you have said and humbly suggest to you that Kelly will have the opportunity to fly like a butterfly and sting like a bee on the backbench.

Actually the more we think about it we anticipate that democracy will be better served with him operating with gay abandon on the back benches in our parliament.

  24. Donald Duck, Esq – would you prefer to see David Simmons be made the next GG instead of Philip Greaves? I hope you objected when Simmons was made Chief Justice.

By the way, do you think that perhpas the GG consented to remaining for the service? Or are you suggesting that the PM ordered him to be there? I am sure the GG’s protocol staff would have advised the GG whether it was appropriate to attend.

I agree with you however only to the extent that the newspaper ad for the service had the DLP logo at the bottom – this was not appropriate.

I wonder if what what many of you thought of the words inferred from this statement made by Thompson on Saaturday night

“I want to end by thanking the magnificent and intelligent people of Barbados for knowing what is right for the development of this country”

Was he not saying that those people who voted for the blp and those who did not vote are not intelligent!!! What insulting remarks

Donald a little too literal in your interpretation we think?
Could it that he was making a very general response to our election system which is first past the poll?

In this regard he would have been referring to the result more so than any polar position.

You need to stop splitting hairs Donald 🙂

DD, the poor GG is not human eh? He ain’t need renewing at any time I guess? Saved for life eh? First time in my life I saw a GG laugh. That was priceless! Just be human/Bajan for a change and not so partisan. Give the GG some credit too neh. Surely he knows his role and will not allow himself or that lofty position to be compromised.
We have been strangling so long that at the first feeling of release and freedom we want to complain. Like the Egyptians and Moses. Wanting to go back to what they knew. Fear of the unknown.
To borrow ‘cawmere’s motto “up and on, up and on” DD.

  27. Donald Duck, Esq – you said:

I pointed out to your doppleganger (The other Donald Duck) in a previous post that the BLP changed their minds several times about having a referendum on the republic issue. The other Donald Duck defended that. I would suggest that the DLP can indeed change their minds if they are guided by the the public.

However, at what point did the DLP oppose the move to republic status? I think they opposed having a referendum without first giving the public specifics of the type of republic the government was proposing.

Put the other side DD, the people also voted well enough to place 10 opposition members in place. No 30 /0 or 25/5 or 29/1. Barbadians voted intelligently. Stop having that hissy fit. It is losing momentum. Settle down neh.

    ………………………………………………………
    David,
Could not agree more. Kellman erratic behaviour over a long period left Thompson with no choice. I glad he did not include Kellman in his cabinet. Arthur was forced to kick Payne, Liz, Johnny, Rommell(twice), Hammie la out his cabinet. These decisons unpopular as they maybe shows leaders who are strong and not playing to the gallery.

I believe majority of fair minded Barbadians agree Kellman’s open dislike of Thompson and refusal to cooperate on collective decisions warranted his ommission. I expect Kellman to continue trying his utmost to undermine Thompson.
Thompson will prevail however because he has never shown any ill will towards Kellman.

  31. A slap in the face!

How can the most loyal DLP supporters be treated with such contempt? Not even ministry of “social care” (whatever that means) or constituency development, or sports? David “no cheque” Thompson is one vindictive Dee.

  32. There has been no Maximum leader in Barbadian politics since Errol Barrow, the other being Tom Adams. A maximum leader has the effect of turn a parliamentary cabinet into a prime minister’s cabinet, and he does this with patronage, pension and a lot of fear. Owen Arthur cannot be seen as a maximum leader althought he presided over what to my mind was a prime minister’s cabinet. He did this by making his cabinet larger than the number of votes outside of cabinet but with the parliament, and which is the only way that the parliament may exercise it’s authority. Thompson today in the way he conducted the election (as a team effort) and by having a cabinet that consist of less than half of parliaments members and votes cannot by any reasonable measurement be referred to as a maximum leader. There is no need for him to become a maximum leader.

  33. Well……….I would have invited the defeated(DEFEATED; DEFEATED) BLP MP’s to the service at the oval.
Personally I do not think Owen or Clyde’s heart or ego could take it.
Then there were at lease two Doctors in the audience…Suckoo and Estwick., not to mention the various Pastors and Revs.

  36. No fan of Jerome Walcott, but i never understood why the problems in out Health Sector in particular at the QEH have been laid at his feet. If there is poor service, broken equipment, and systematic bad practices in managing these two areas how is this the fault of the Minister? and that changing the Minister and on one else will change things around? This is one of the calls from the DLP and other Bajans that i never understood.

I don’t agree with you hear Adrian. Our Health care sector is composed of the Private sector (which takes care of its self) the Public Health area which is responsible for the environment, and Public Health or free Health care in the polyclinics etc and the hospital. The Minister of Health is responsible for the last two. The Minister could intervene where there is poor service broken equipment, and systematic bad practices in managing these two areas. It is his job.

You said that “This is one of the calls from the DLP and other Bajans that i never understood.” The reason is because healthcare is an emotional issue. And the provision of Healthcare is best understood by those who are involved in it. The problems of the Health care system in Barbados is known by all those involved in it for years; that is those who care. But often the powers that be does not listen. Over and over Liz was told not to put the dump in St Andrew. Since 1994 there was a Bajan in the UK with stellar performance in solid waste management who was denied the opportunity to return to use his skills in this area. Back then approaches from the French to incinerate our garbage and hook up the heat involved by exchange of the energy to the National grid.

The issues in the polyclinics can be fixed. I have personally sent my proposals to the head of the stream on this matter. The hospital doctors know how to fix the hospital problems, and Jerome Walcott knew what was wrong and what should have been done when he was President of BAMP.

  38. We read in today’s nation that Comissiong also questioned the new ministerial portfolios announced by Thompson.
“Some of the delineation of ministries is a bit peculiar. Take for example, Family, Youth Affairs, Sports and the Environment,”he said. “Some of them don’t seem very logical.”
He also said it was “striking” that the Prime Minister named three ministers “to assist him” and picked them from outside the Democratic Labour Party group which had contested the election.
Comissiong wondered aloud if this reflected a “lack of self-confidence” by Thompson and a lack of confidence in his election candidates.

    =============================
I find it striking that Comissiong is confused that the Prime Minister named three ministers to assist him, and that he chose them from among the best brains in the country. During the election campaign, the BLP repeatedly harped that there were no economists among the DLP election candidates. Now if this is indeed true, would not the PM know this, and was it not then prudent of him to invite the best of Barbados to assist him? Why should he pick them from within the Democratic Labour Party group which had contested the election, when he knew, and the now opposition party knew that none of these candidates were unsuited to the particular task? Should he have done it to look stupid, so that they could say “I told you so!’ You don’t play cricket with a base ball bat.

Comissiong’s reflections about the PM’s choice evincing a “lack of self-confidence” is also nonsense. When a surgeon is doing major surgery he seeks out the most competent anaesthetist and the best scrub nurse that he can get. I can assure you that does a lot for his self-confidence. Thompson by choosing the best team that he could find, has not only garnered himself a panoply to attack his task but should also by so doing have enhanced our confidence in him. I really can not understand why Comissiong thinks that by putting square pegs in round holes that this would show the Bajan populace or anyone else that Thompson was confident in his election candidates. Rather he would have only set them up for severe ridicule by the populace.

  39. Why should he pick them from within the Democratic Labour Party group which had contested the election.
    ……………………………………………………………………..
Excuses for every occasion is norm when you are placed against the wall. GP, you are smart to use the spoken language. The BLP said the DLP do not have any economists, thus you reason to resort to the ugly word ‘INCLUSION” of three private sector professionals. But I say, Smoke screen, when you had Estwick shadowing Finance, you allowed Sealy to speak on Finance on Brass Tacks, and you are now using such excuses of “No Economist in the party”. GP, you can do better than that. Simply, Mr. Thompson is saying loud and clear, my parliamentarians cannot drive.

  40. Comissiong, I agree with your timely observations. What I must say to you is to stay focused, although I know it would have been totally impossible for you to win a seat, furthermore the Government. But you with your small financial base, you still dealt with issues that the mainstream parties refused to deal with, and with that I compliment your sterling effort. Maybe, we might have deflection from both parties to create a viable third party system. Nothing is impossible.

  41. Frankology
I really cant see anything wrong with the PM employing three private sector professionals to assist him. After all they are bright Bajans. In fact when I saw that he had chosen Darcy Boyce, my estimation of the PM went up. Cause Darcy Boyce is just simply BRILLIANT! Now if OSA had been wise enough to employ him, or if he was able to attract him, he would not have done so much bovine excrement with the economy.

Estwick could have shadowed Finance till Jesus returned—- he is not an economist, and he can not wear Darcy’s discarded and worn out shoes. Similarly Sealy might have spoken on Finance on Brass Tacks, but he not an economist either by training. Clearly he couldn’t have asked Darcy and Miss McClean to go on the call in programmes.

I am not a Dee, and so I don’t know if they are any economists therein. I do know that Mr. Thompson has won the first round by selecting these three persons to assist in running the finances of the country. They seem to be the finest we have in Barbados. I don’t see why you cant accept that.

The BLP said they were no economist among the candidates; Thompson has shown that he can find economists in Barbados with an interest in assisting him to manage the affairs of Barbados. That is good for us. Are you unhappy that we do have such economists, and that they are willing to come from the private sector to help Thompson? Are we interested only in our partisan interests or in the proper running of Barbados?.

Why should Thompson ask his non economists to drive the economy of Barbados if they are not so trained Frankie ma boy?

  42. Oh by the way Frankology I am not making excuses for anyone, nor am I saying that Thompson is responding to BLP taunts by including three private sector professionals, nor am I saying that Thompson was using the BLP taunts as an excuse for anything. I just like the stroke he made. Of the back foot ………and perfect placement of the ball. He got you running in vain to catch that one. You guys were looking for him to bring who? Some one like Gear box or Easy boy or King Dyall?

  43. You will never hear Commissiong agree with ANYTHING that David Thompson says or does. Commissiong has never forgiven Thompson for winning the St. John seat after Mr. Errol Barrow died. He has always been jealous and envious of Thompson. Furthermore, when he was with the DLP, he mounted the platform at Gall Hill one night and declared, “I am here tonight to address my black brothers and sisters.” The few white people present, some of whom were St. John residents, left the secne, and no one could have blamed them. Commissiong is his own worst enemy.

  44. Georgie Porgie,

YOU SAID: “In fact when I saw that he had chosen Darcy Boyce, my estimation of the PM went up. Cause Darcy Boyce is just simply BRILLIANT!”

Why don’t you save your squawking until AFTER he has actually done something in his new position?

Your hot air can’t run the Barbados economy.

    B + F + P + E

  45. Not only is Commissiong pseudo-intelligent with a big chip on his shoulder. But he has such an inflated view of his own self importance it’s pathetic if it wasn’t so tragic. What a waste…he didn’t even get the most PEP votes. Another mixed-race pan-african pimp with identity issues…so sad.

  46. I concur with the selection of Darcy, who is highly trained in the field. David was Finance Minister in the Barrow administration and I feel that the two of them would be able to handle the ministry, so why will he have to engage two other Junior Ministers in the Prime Minister’s office. This resembles the American system where we have specialists for every occasion. Remember back in May 2007, David made this statement “BARBADIANS can expect a leaner, more creatively-run Democratic Labour Party (DLP) Cabinet that is serious about tackling social problems, if the party wins the next general election”. We have 18 ministers, the same as the last administration, so if he had scrapped those two Minister of State position, he would have lived up to his statement.

  47. Comissiong, I agree with your timely observations. What I must say to you is to stay focused,

Am I to understand that this NEUTRAL one in the form of frankology has loss faith in the blp to the extent that he now looks towards Commissiong as his saviour?

Surely life has not reached such a low level of desperation and distress???

Frankology you are all over the place recently, I am having a hard time following your logic (if there is any) is this the result of the serious bout of head blows and body blows that you endured in the recent election Campaign that you failed at???????

If it is please hold on a while before we admit you to the newly managed QEH for some excellent care.

  48. The constitution is very clear on the process to follow in forming a cabinet. The Prime Minister and no less than five members of parliament shall form the cabinet. Jerome Walcott was the Minister of health before becoming a member parliament, Lynette Eastmond was a Minister for almost 8 years and was never a member parliament, Erskine Griffith, got rewards for breaking oath office (sharing government info with Owen) as the permanent secretary in the Ministry of finance under Thompson, he too was not a member of parliament. Where these appointment slaps in the face of somebody?

BFPE You are correct. Hot air cant run the Barbados economy, but I think that if OAS could that Darcy can do better. That’s my opinion. Anyone who knows Mr Boyce well knows that he is as sharp as a tack. Everyone knows too that you only have to have access to a computer and the internet to make rude comments on this forum.

You and Frankology like umpires giving a man out before the bowler bowl the ball. You fellows want to give the man out before the fielders appeal.

  50. Frankology eventually and grudgingly accepts the selection of Darcy Boyce. And then questions why the PM must engage two other Junior Ministers in the Prime Minister’s office. The answer Frankie is because he is in charge and can do what he thinks is right It is his time. Give him a break.

Frankology further asserts that “back in May 2007, David made this statement “BARBADIANS can expect a leaner, more creatively-run Democratic Labour Party (DLP) Cabinet that is serious about tackling social problems, if the party wins the next general election”. We have 18 ministers, the same as the last administration, so if he had scrapped those two Minister of State position, he would have lived up to his statement.”

This might be true, but last time I checked it was not written of even King David that “he was the same yesterday, today and for ever.”(c.f Hebrews 13:8) That was written of Christ, not Thompy. Only God is immutable or unchanging (Hebrews 6:17-18). In fact even the great Frankology is not the same yesterday, today and for ever. Neither is the great Frankology immutable. ……..especially since the elections. So why are we picking all these nits so early friend. Do you have Pick’s disease Sir?
