David; re. your 4:41 am post;

You are correct but I have indeed considered that cohort of the population.

The reason that the US experts are beating the drum for testing, testing and more testing is to get a handle on what proportion of the general public has been compromised by the virus in any way and has left its signatures in body fluids including blood in the population. The virus is shed from the infected body as the disease is brought under control. When it is controlled it has been found that it takes around 7 days for all particles to be shed from the body. Infected persons are released back into the community when they test negative twice over a period of 2 days.

Barbados, like all of our island neighbours, did or does not have access to large numbers of tests and had to use what we had very sparingly. Thus, the only measure that we had for gauging the incidence of the virus in the population (and a very imperfect one, at that) might be by comparing the evidence of infection levels hinted at by a comparison of the graphs of the progress of the various Covid-19 outbreaks in our Islands.

Most of the world was in the same position as the Caribbean and used the data obtained by the minimal testing of infected people and their contacts and their contacts to produce the graphs we see on such sites as WHO and Worldometer etc. All these graphs give an imperfect picture and significant underestimation of infection levels in the county or country in which the tests are carried out, but, since they are carried out in the same way in each country they might provide some rationale for guesstimating the comparative levels of the infection in various groups of countries.

The data shows that, starting out at essentially the same levels, there was some divergence in relation to the rate of infection and therefore progress of the various outbreaks in various countries. The graphs for Barbados showed low and declining levels of infection from the beginning, peaking at the level of 13 positive cases per day and thereafter showing a slowly declining trend. The individuals who would have contributed to the declining trend would have been primarily from the contact testing but should also have included other individuals referred by Health professionals or who presented themselves to Government institutions because of concern that their symptoms might point to untimely death due to the dread Covid-19.

Amit, in an earlier post on this blog, reported on his initiative of graphing Covid-19 incidence over weekly periods throughout the epidemic, in several Caribbean Islands. If David thinks it is appropriate and Amit agrees I can post a subset of graphs clipped from his data for 6 Caribbean territories which I think could illustrate some of what I have presented above.

Covid 19

There was 1 more positive case announced today as well as 1 death. A slight uptick of the daily cases line is indicated in the graph by the blue line. The total cumulative number of positive cases from the tests carried out yesterday is 76 – Llyall Small

  1. Much better than a Trump Covid press conference.

    I like that Bostic fellow.

    TheO,

Barbadian women are indeed looking better than forty years ago. Better skin, nail and hair care products. Dental care is also better.

  2. Yes i watch but Bostic forced me to take my mind back to the many months of him telling the country that govt Portocols were working
My mind did a double take a flip then asked if these portocols were working
How it is that tourist can blatantly come inti barbados and do as they dam please
Not wear mask and fete and party on the beaches in masses
But then again Bostic shows up all scripted and tell bajans what he wants them to know

  3. @ Donna who wrote ” Barbadian women are indeed looking better than forty years ago ”

    I disagree.

  4. Barbados’ confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) moved to 365 – 195 females and 170 males, after three people returned positive results from the 1 060 tests completed by the Best-dos Santos Public Health Laboratory on Sunday.

Those testing positive are a 44-year-old male visitor, who arrived on Jet Blue on December 26; and a 26-year-old male visitor and a 52-year-old female visitor, who each came into contact with a known case. They are all asymptomatic.

  5. “UK records its highest number of new Covid infections, with 53,135 cases’

  6. So what so different with these protocols
Didn’t Bostic said for months that the old protocols were working

  7. The new coronavirus variant spreading rapidly in England — and increasingly detected around the world — does not appear to cause more serious illness, according to the first matched study of people infected with the new B.1.1.7 strain and those with other variants.

Susan Hopkins, senior medical adviser to Public Health England, which carried out the research, said it “suggests that the new variant does not cause more severe disease or increased mortality but we are continuing our investigations to understand this better”.

Scientists have been scrambling to learn more about the new coronavirus variant that devastated the Christmas plans of millions of people in Britain and left the UK largely isolated from the rest of the world as a result of travel bans imposed by other countries…..(Quote)

  8. When COVID first made a mad dash across The USA a similar response came from WHO with Donald duck Trump dismissing the virus as nothing to worry about

Are you a law school examiner?

Have many of our lawyer/politicians shown you their university transcripts?

Due to COVID-19 protocols, family members, friends and greeters who are collecting travellers from high-risk countries, which include Canada, United Kingdom, United States of America, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad, should have no contact with travellers until they have been cleared by health authorities.
Accordingly, GAIA Inc. has asked family members, friends and/or greeters of passengers arriving from these counties to refrain from visiting the airport so as to minimise any potential health risks….(Quote)

New COVID-19 Variant From U.K. Confirmed In U.S. For First Time

The first confirmed case of the new, more transmissible COVID-19 variant first discovered in the U.K. has been discovered in the United States.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) said Tuesday that a state laboratory confirmed the variant known as B.1.1.7 in a male in his 20s, who is currently in isolation in Elbert County.

State authorities say the man had no travel history, and so far, no close contacts have been identified.

The mutant COVID-19 variant has already been detected in at least 18 other countries, including the United Kingdom.

Denver International Airport isn’t currently operating a direct flight to the United Kingdom, the Colorado Sun notes, though direct flights to some other countries, including Canada, are available.

A couple in Ontario, Canada, tested positive for B.1.1.7 earlier this week.

  12. “The surges and the impact on our ICUs across the country is absolutely devastating. … This is the nightmare scenario we worked so hard to prevent,” Dr. Peter Hotez, an infectious disease specialist at the Baylor College of Medicine, told CNN on Tuesday about the hospital situation nationwide.
The United States reported 121,235 coronavirus patients in hospitals Monday, the most reported on a given day during the pandemic, according to the Covid Tracking Project. The country’s proportion of ICU patients who have coronavirus also has shot up, from 16% in September to 40% last week, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services.
“When you run out of capacity, physicians and bioethicists in these hospitals will need to decide which patients are salvageable — potentially salvageable — and which patients aren’t,” CNN medical analyst Dr. Jonathan Reiner said Monday.

  16. U.S. Congressman-elect Luke Letlow, [aged 41] has died at Ochsner-LSU Health Shreveport, Louisiana, after being diagnosed with Covid-19, his spokesman confirmed Tuesday evening. Letlow had announced his diagnosis on his Facebook page on December 18, writing that he was “at home resting…” Days later, Letlow posted that he was undergoing treatment at St. Francis Hospital in Monroe, before a statement from his office on December 23 said he had been transferred to Ochsner LSU Heath Shreveport Academic Medical Center. Dr. G.E. Ghali, the chancellor of LSU Health Shreveport, said in a statement at the time that Letlow was in “stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit” and was receiving the drug Remdesivir and steroids as part of his treatment.

Ontario’s Finance Minister Rod Phillips said he “deeply regrets” taking a personal trip to the Caribbean island of St. Barts over the holidays, despite government and public health guidance to stay home.

    +++++
Air passengers entering Canada will soon need to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test before arriving in the country, the federal government announced today.

Travellers must receive a negative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test within a 72-hour period prior to boarding a plane. Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc said he expects the new rule will be in force within a week.

  32. https://barbadostoday.bb/2020/12/31/airport-employees-await-covid-19-test-results/

Barbados TODAY understands the two Brits arrived on Sunday afternoon aboard Virgin Atlantic Flight 131 from London Heathrow. One of the visitors tested positive while quarantining at a popular south coast hotel. Prior to being isolated on Tuesday, the couple reportedly removed the red wristbands identifying them as quarantining guests, boarded a taxi and attempted to leave the country on British Airways Flight 2154. However, they were held by police last night and taken into isolation.

Will they be treated like our Jamaican cousin? Or do we reserve the harshest treatment for only those who look like us?

Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes issued that clear warning today as he sentenced Jamaican visitor Dean George Scott to six months in prison for leaving his quarantine centre to purchase “Fanta and other stuff” at a shop.

Reading the details makes one wonder WTF
    Govt cannot control people emotions
Govt has lost control of this ongoing quarantine problem
Pretty soon all heads of govt going to start pelting not so nice words at each other
    Just watch

  35. Here comes the throwashadecrew. What will you have the government do? Yes we know, close the country until COVID-19 disappears from the face of the earth.

  36. David

    My two cents worth

The Increasing numbers of active cases in Barbados is essentially a function of increased flights from Metropolitan countries that have significant current very significant surges in covid-19 cases..
There is no reported evidence of shortage of facilities for treating serious cases of which only one has been reported over the past few months. There has been a report that funds have been secured to increased beds and other urgent care quarantine facilities at the St Lucy quarantine facility.
There will probably be a need to increase the availability of trained doctors and nurses to service expanded facilities. Meanwhile, there is no report that existing facilities are under stress.
Testing infrastructure and staffing may need to be monitored to ensure that, if necessary, such facilities could be rapidly enhanced.
The overwhelming majority of Active cases are non-symptomatic and shed their virus loads while in isolation.
There is still no evidence of Community spread reported by Government.
The Government appears to be using global best practice in its proactive adoption or tweaking of measures / protocols as soon as such is indicated.
The Tourism imperative is a necessary evil. The Government appears to be taking a balanced approach. It would appear that sanctions .and penalties are being utilized fairly and sensibly.
The vaccines may not be available here before mid year.
It is too early to determine what will be the effect of the newly reported mutations of the Covid-19 virus.
The integrated management of Covid-19 here appears to be still exemplary.

Of note is the comment for Bosstic

I think Bosstic deserves his own story. This is one individual where whether you are B, D, throwingshade, throwinglight, overseas or local that we can think of positively. I am not a praying man/ardent believer, but I hope that the Good Lord/universe/good luck continue to favor his decisions. “Take a bow, Bosstic. Happy New year. A successful 2021”.

My response: The thing is we don’t know if these “Brits” look like Hal Austin or like Boris Johnson. Whichever. I am happy to see them jailed for 6 months. Give them a nice warm vacation in the tropics.

  40. Sorry that we can’t give them some nice warm lashes too.

  41. 3 of 5 visitors who tried to breech their quarantine are now in police custody.

Of the 3, two were a couple/domestic partners/husband and wife/boyfriend and girlfriend etc.breeched quarantine and took a taxi to hurriedly return to their covid infested country.

I am not too bright so can somebody explain to me why a person or knowing that they are covid positive and knowing that Barbados has had no covid19 deaths since April and knowing that our mortality rate is 24 per million as compared to over 1,000 per million for both the U.S.A. and the United Kingdom, what would be the reasoning of such a person [or couple] to try to flee from a safer place to a more dangerous place?

  42. Correction: 5 people tried to breech quarantine. Of the 5, three are covid19 positive, including one half of the couple who took a taxi to the airport trying to flee Barbados where the covid19 death rate is 24/1,000000 to go to the U.K where the Covid19 death rate is 985/1,000000.

i truly don’t understand how human beings think.

  43. The PM is making a major statement momentarily.

    Stand by.

  44. Just saw part of the Government Press Conference which finished about 20 minutes ago..

Looks like we are in a Community spread phase again with 5 people diagnosed with the virus this morning. The Contract Tracing team is already on the job.
There is now a 12:00 to 5:00 am Curfew for 2 weeks; Holiday for next monday and tuesday. Schools vacation extended until 14th January, etc.
Everyone must take this very seriously and follow the protocols vigilantly and vigorously.
This is not the first outbreak. There were at least 2 earlier ones which the Island surmounted. We got over those small outbreaks and we will get over this one.

  45. Really? A government, that some accused of hiding local deaths and infections, just held a press conference to announce that 5 Bajans with no recent travel history tested positive?

  46. I forgot to mention that the 5 new cases includes 2 prison officers. I think most of us who follow the Covid outbreaks understand exavtly what this may mean.

Cuhdear bajan; Thanks for the compliment. I hope Hal Austin is happy now. I’m certain if he thinks about it that he will see that his fears that Government was consistently hiding Covid cases had to be just malign thinking.

  47. It was bound to happen, we have to manage it. We can do this people!
