Your message to the BLOGMASTER was sent

The first method for estimating the intelligence of a ruler is to look at the men he has around him – Niccolo Machiavelli

The blogmaster read a report in the press yesterday that former Minster of Drainage (and the Environment) Denis Lowe,  “still has fervour for politics” and intends to throw his hat in the ring come next general election due in 2023. There was an attempt to make his intention serious by giving the story prominence on the front page of the Nation newspaper.

The blogmaster is challenged to present a cogent response to Lowe’s outlandish desire to offer himself as a candidate in the next election.  This is a man who left his ministry with a handful of garbage trucks and had to resort to commandeering MTW trucks and bobcats to remove piles of garbage from the streets of Barbados. What Lowe will be most remembered for is an attempt to foist a gasification waste to energy plant on Barbadians under the cloak of night. Cahill Energy … anyone?

The Nation newspaper reported Lowe’s desire to contest the next election was ratified by the Christ Church East constituency. The blogmaster notes the interesting comeback from president of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) Verla De Peiza when asked to comment, the party will make candidate announcements at a later date”.

Political pundits are left to ask – how come the leadership of DLP Christ Church East  is so out of touch with the political reality prevailing in the country? What would have motivated a handful of individuals to ratify Lowe’s selection at this time? What would have motivated them to retrieve a spent, incompetent and shady  Denis Stephenson Lowe from the political dust bin? By the way, has he been given a clean bill of health? We recall he had to be away from office for unacceptable periods of time.

The blogmaster criticized Verla De Peiza when she allowed Stuart to share his specious concerns under the party banner earlier in the year. Once again this blogmaster is suggesting she should move with haste to excoriate political skeletons associated with Stuarts unpopular reign. At a time Prime Minister Mia Mottley continues to suck the political oxygen from Barbados’ political space,  Verla De Peiza leader is being undermined by political fiends stinking up her leadership space. If De Peiza wants to establish the party as hers, if she wants to match and surpass Mottley, she must respond with a ruthlessness borrowed from the Machiavellian handbook. If she does not the label of ‘watchman’ will flourish.

The ratification of Lowe by the constituency raises the perennial issue discussed many times on the blog. The private selection of candidates by the duopoly who eventually find themselves elevated to members of the cabinet. BU has posted several blogs exposing Lowe as a stool pigeon and plan for Peter Allard going back to when he was appointed to the Senate.

It is time for political parties in Barbados to reinvent themselves. Men and women must hold their noses and offer to serve. We can implement the best systems to ‘democratize’ the process, it will not work as intended unless intelligent  people with copious integrity raise their hands.

Remarkable considering the author. There’s hope.
    Peace.

  2. THANK YOU, PLT! I have been trying to tell him that I was soooo surprised when I found it out myself! Looked up the number of billionaires and millionaires and the number of people in the world and did the math. There is the Bernie Sanders “ONE PERCENT” (of which he is a part) and there is the rest of us.

But just for Baje’s edification, I sit on a plot of land big enough for four large houses and I own a “bungalow”: worth far more than $200,000 AND….I am debating whether to clear my mortgage early. Not rich but very comfortable. And well aware of how lucky I am!

I don’t blame him for not believing though. But one would have thought I had proven myself intelligent enough that he should at least have done the math!

    Also….

Baje says he has travelled the world and believes he can tell a person’s net worth by their lifestyle but he does not know that he cannot tell a person’s net worth by looking at his lifestyle. The flashy lifestyle usually depletes the net worth. Great works of art, jewelry, real estate and a few other items usually appreciate in value. Most other purchases depreciate. Your net worth is diminished the moment you take them home. And sometimes the lifestyle is funded by credit cards. Debt diminishes your net worth unless the purchase appreciates in value more than the interest that you pay.

    Here ends Baje’s lesson.

  3. And Baje, the little left over mortgage is the only debt I have.

But the good news is that YOU may very well be in the one per cent if you have not wasted your earnings! A smart man that works for your salary should be a millionaire!

PS: Of course, that depends on his lifestyle.

Did you honestly expect anything different ? You disappoint me.
Don’t you realise that many want BU to get back to cussing overseas Bajans; going back to Bee and Dee crap.
Note all the foolish tit for tat BLPDLP is resurfacing. They will start campaigning soon. Same old same old.
Who the hell cares about the only true Pan Africanist being chased out of the cabinet. Even the Pan Africanist himself refuses to speak. I told you that until Prescod speaks we are in the dark. He needs to address his constituents .
Next stop: Throne speech and redo.
I am prepared to wait and hear what direction we are going. Let’s give the PM a chance to put the government’s position and policies on the way forward.
    Peace.

  5. @To whom it may concern

A learning for the blogmaster, a consequence of blogging for over a decade is that to discuss governance issues is a dry topic for many. To encourage wider discussion the topic has to be presented through the ‘backdoor’, even then it is hit or miss. If some here lack the cognition to appreciate the approach the blogmaster accepts that dullards will always be with us. Humankind like a democracy is not perfect.

  6. David

    No begging from me.

  7. It is high time that the National Democratic Party come back like a Phoenix out of the ashes. A number of it’s manifesto pledges were taken up by the two opposing parties. Good men and women offered themselves and were rejected. Harry Russell, C. Trevor Clarke, Jeannette Layne-Clarke,Sir Richard,Wendle Mcclean,Randall Rouse,My beloved Teacher Leroy Harewood was a member, Patrick Carter, Harold Blackman and a host of good men with wonderful ideas never given the chance to govern. I was yet a young man,but threw my support behind these valiant men and women of good repute. Oh how I wish we had some personages with guts , calibre with solid careers and a willingness to serve.

  8. Donna July 31, 2020 11:58 AM

Conceiving of and designing a system of governance is not something my mind stretches to at all. And from what little I know of what has been tried I can think of none better than so-called democracy. If anyone can enlighten me, I would be willing to learn.

What does your remark mean? What hope do you see? This writer is never given to hope.

You asked if we are going to wait until the Western system collapses to develop a system of our own. You seldom have anything positive to say about efforts to have a Caribbean union. At least you now recognize that we need a new system in the Caribbean.
    Peace.

  11. Pachamama,

It is my humble opinion that mankind has evolved a long way from the days of the cave man. That gives me all the hope I need to enjoy life. We have recognized that even the animals should have rights. We have made laws to that effect. All we have to do is find a way to enforce them more widely.

Pessimism or cynicism ENSURES that there will be no change. Without hope there will obviously be no action.

Why not take the time to introduce your ideas and let them marinate and develop and take hold of the imagination?

Evolution is a slow process. And for good reason, I think. Anything else leads to chaos.

  12. Sir William

We are not particularly writing \thinking about the Caribbean or even Barbados.

But yes, we consider previous attempts to form a Caribbean union as failures. These were and are mere copies of what others were doing and being attemped by people who largely were micmic-men.

In fact, like the EU approaches imminent failure so too may Caricom.

Closer to your point, this writer will never be reflexively supporting anybody”s ideas no matter how well intentioned they may appear, if failure could be so easily observed beforehand.

For decades we have been arguing for new systems for the entire world and have done significant work in this regard, developing conceptual models and the like.

Progressives tend to be too accepting of what others insist must be believed. That is one of the reasons why we remain committed anarchists.

@Pachamama July 31, 2020 6:37 PM “Cuhdear Bajan. Our most humble apologies.”

    Apology not accepted.

To blame old women for MALE political failures is outrageous. The failures in jails are mostly MALE. The failures in the mental hospitals are mostly MALE, the failures on the block are mostly MALE, the failures in Parliaments and Congresses are mostly MALE, the failures in homes are mostly MALE. Even Trump is MALE. Try to imagine a female Trump. Impossible.

If women were as frequent failures as men are the world would already have descended into chaos, into anarchy, into nihilism.

No. We old women will not accept responsibility for MALE failures.

  14. O shute! Even the Devil is ALWAYS referred to as MALE.

That is precisely the conversation I remember. Not all of it but I remember saying how glad I was to hear.

  17. Mr Lowe should realise that we have long gone past ‘Boy Chile’ Smith’s mantra, in that if he had brought one of his Two-Sons coffins to his constituency, and marked his party’s initials on it, he was abundantly sure that it would occupy a seat in Palmetto Street,

  21. @ William

You know the story of Chinese whispers, by the time you reach the last person the message is completely different. We cannot rely on memory or whispers or interpret events to suit our own prejudices.
Mr Prescod will speak for himself when appropriate, but that does not stop us from examining the impact of his absence from a government drifting further to the right.
It is a government now in the grip of the local business class and, I believe, Prescod’s head was the price the president had to pay. Was it his age that caused his sacking? If so, she knew his age two years ago. It took fifteen minutes of tears and promises before he was given his walking orders, as far as I am told.
The President and Prescod has long been facing off in Cabinet meetings, up to the Monday night before his sacking, and the white and mixed race business community had always seen Prescod as a block. He represented something they did not like.
If Mr Prescod was so bad at his job, why was he offered a diplomatic position to Africa (playing on his Pan-Africanist sentiments to ease the blow)? More importantly, what does his dismissal from the top table mean in terms of policy going forward?
Then we also need to look at how government is functioning, without any transparency or discussions in parliament. Look at the sale of Crown property to private developers, not only Hyatt and the compulsory purchase of Ms Ram’s property to hand over to a private developer, but land further up Bay Street, such as the old eye hospital/welfare department to Allen Kinch. Why was that property sold to Kinch and what has happened to it in terms of ownership since he bought it? He much did he pay for it and how has it received for par t of it, if reports are true?
@William, I have long been saying the president has no time for details; she prefers PR and her fandom’s undiluted praise. I have said on BU on numerous occasions that black and traditional white Barbadians have to reach a settlement if not the island will be taken from them by the New Barbadians. This is but a last throw of the dice by the remnants of the plantocracy.
But as long as they can do deals in Cattlewash late at night they will continue to think they are invincible. Ordinary Barbadians must make the final decisions.

  22. @ Donna

Yuh notice how the newspaper columnist talking bout Chinese whispers. Wuh he trying to say now is that he never say he ain’t coming back here to live.

Yuh notice how he does want to make we believe he could REMEMBER EVERY SINGLE THING HE SAY and if he can’t remember he does say yuh fabricating things bout he? You notice how he does try to make we believe he PERFECT, that he never tell a lie yet or does make mistakes?

You notice how he feel that he does be RIGHT ALL THE TIME and everybody else does be WRONG? He even feel that he opinions or assumptions does ALWAYS BE RIGHT. Even when yuh prove he wrong, he does change the context of the argument just to prove that he right.

Donna, ask yuh self this. The newspaper columnist does say that the government incompetent and he does don’t believe nothing that does come from them, but he arguing a case for Trevor Prescod who is part of the same government.

He say that Prescod and Mottley uses to face off at Cabinet meetings. The only body he could get that information from was from one of the Cabinet members or if one of them tell somebody and somehow the information get to he. That is gossip, hear say, and he point bout Chinese whispers got to come into play here.

But to make things worse, he come here to BU with HEARSAY, SECOND OR THIRD HAND INFORMATION, and trying to tell we it is the truth. If he think government ministers incompetent and does tell lies, how come he believe what them saying now? It is because it fall in line with his agenda.

Uh gine give yuh another one bout he. You notice how he does address he poochlickers? For the man that does LIKE everything he say, @ Vincent Codrington and the others @ Robert Lucus, @ William, @ Greene, @ PLT. He does talk bout anonymous bloggers, but he like @ Baje and @ Mariposa.

But notice how he DON’T address people that he don’t like with @? He does just quote what they say and comment on it or drop he nasty remarks.

Yuh see how childish he is for a big able old man?

That is the Hal Austin Condition.

Who could disagree with your meaning.

However, “hope” has long become an intangible within the marketing campaigns of politicians. It is deployed as a major plank in didtorting realities until votes are harvested.

As a result this writer is highly suspicious about the dialectics of hope.

Obama himself was the most recent expert exponent of the human’s desire for hope. No measurable difference was made after 8 years and we ended up with Trump.

With Biden, his wingman, people are again hopeful that that the regime of Trump could be expunged, that will not happen.

Surely, there are parallels in the Bajan context of the weaponization of hope.

There are some people whose hope discourses we have some time for, admittedly. These include the radical Christian, Cornel West and this writer is far from being Christian. But as a political or development project it remains a nebulous concept.

Being referenced by you as a “Poochlicker” is a superb compliment.
I know you are not one. However wherever or whomever you are, I choose not to be. So my Dear friend, your vile, crude style is so repulsive to where and who I am that if you are not a poochliker , I an comfortable.
Imagine you call @ PLT a poochliker and PLT is the mastermind behind the only original idea of this current administration. His idea published weeks before it was stolen and masqueraded as the brainchild of some politician is now a worldwide topic. Now pray tell , would I want to be in your company or that of @PLT . I would rather lick his ass than take a glass of water from the likes of you!
@ Hal and I have been involved in progressive dialogue for centuries. Yet, I have disagreed with @Hal that Barbados is a failed state. In recent times, I have disagreed right here on BU on at least four positions that he has taken. My major problem with @ Hal, is his decision to engage in stupid debates with people who are completely bias against Barbadians who live overseas and people who have never made any known contribution to our island state and come here on BU pretending that they love Barbados more than anybody else but would support policies that are destroying the same Barbados that they claim to love once those policies are from Roebuck or George Street.
@ Hal has no one to blame but himself because he somehow believed that he could get them to engage in serious debate.
Put your full name and then write anywhere in Barbados, Canada, Guyana, USA or anywhere else that I have lived and reference me in any negative way and see the type of response you and your kind will get. But then again cowards like you can’t even publish the name your parents gave you at birth. BU will always be a safe Harbour for your kind.

  26. @ William

To return to sanity, have you noticed the silence about the politics of this government? We must sometimes try to reach beyond the mentally defective and reach out to ordinary people. The nation is in deep crisis and all we are getting from the president is a lot of three-card tricks.

  27. William Skinner Avatar

    @ Hal
Agreed. However in all fairness to the PM and government, it is obvious that the field is going to be reset. It is only fair that we give them the opportunity to inform via the new seesion where they intend to take the country. I understand that the broad based committee that was formed sometime back has been meeting quite often and perhaps a new pich will be prepared. So that’s where I am at the moment. One has to very conscious that COVID has upended our economy and its in shambles. This may seem a harsh word but once the bottom of forty percent of your economy has fallen out and unemployment is also forty percent ; shambles is fitting and real. Not the government’s fault but thats where we are when all the fancy talk is done. I want to see what the new effort will look like before I make further comment.I never hit a man when he is down; always give him time to get up. Fair is fair.

” Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office Alies Jordan, said the Adopt Our Families programme will continue to deposit funds to debit cards that were issued to the families for the next three months, subject to further review.

The programme is catering to more than double the number of beneficiary families. The intended limit was 1,500 families but help is going to 3,453 families, Jordan revealed.

The initiative is backed by donations from companies, charities and individuals, including many Barbadians living abroad, as well as those who had become Barbadians “by choice”, said Jordan, as she thanked the donors for their support.”

Thats who we bajans living overseas are !!

  30. @ William

I accept that the Queen’s Speech on September 15 will set out a new road map, or at least should. But things do not come to a halt until then. We have two years on which to make an informed opinion. I am also concerned about the five-week period when parliament is prorogued. What policies will be forced through during that inter-regnum? The record so far is not good.
The president is in love with the politics of politics, she does not like the details of policy. She reminds me of her grand father, who was very convincing as a communicator.
I remember when Mottley and Miller dominated City politics, the poorest district ( old constituency) in the country represented by a Conservative and a right-wing BLP parliamentarian.
Time is very, very short. The nation is in crisis.

anyhow, i have been at the receiving end of some good bajan cussing when i have discussed in certain circles how we can change some things in Bim. i was told to “go back weh yuh come frum. this is how we doz do tings hey. wunnuh doz want to come hey and tell bajans wuh to do but dat in happening.” that among other passive resistance attitude alienated me for a while but then i gave up and eye pass all the ignorance and stupidity in processes that i saw. it is annoying but it is what it is. so i do understand where @Hal is coming from. and when it comes to thiefing artisans and local lawyers ripping off returning Bajan/ British i wont even unpick muh teet in that regard.

i always wanted to live back Bim so i geared my retirement prospects toward that goal. i have some reservations with the murder rate and the inability of MAM to talk about or deal with it. i am especially appalled that she would invite known drug dealers to her opening of parliament as PM.

then, again, as silversleeves said, that is democracy for you. if i wanted something different i would live in China

I have said that all of our Prime Ministers to date have failed to see beyond the norm. Sir Grantley for his time period may be the exception. Barrow failed to radically introduce economic enfranchisement. However he created a very powerful black political class and more than anyone else made Barbados the political playground of the BLPDLP.
Tom’s stay at the wicket was very short; St. John never quite made it; Thompson stay at the wicket was short; Sandiford imploded; Stuart a disaster.
Now we come to Arthur. He more than any of his predecessors had fourteen years to be A+ and he ended with a B+. He immersed himself in stupid side shows and unnecessary displays of the acerbic kind. He more than anyone else had the ability to eclipse both Barrow and Sir Grantley. Perhaps his outstanding contribution to regionalism would gain him an A and that is fine.
As for PM ,the real test will be where the country is in another three or si years. She has met an unexpected foe in COVID and we wait to see if she can successfully negotiate in the new reality. Hence I withhold any assessment at this stage. My only real disappointment is her refusal to even acknowledge that the idea with which she is being given credit was never attributed to @ PLT. We know he had it out there months before she introduced it. It was in the Nation newspaper. It’s a travesty that not once his name has been publicly mentioned. To me, that is a definite red flag.

  38. @ William

I think it is still too early to look long and hard at the 14-years of Arthur’s prime ministership. That time will come. Two things I will ask you to consider in the meantime.
First, Margaret Thatcher was prime minister for 11 years, and Ronald Reagan president for eight years; both have had a greater impact on changing the course of their nation’s history than Arthur.
The second is this, since many people seem to consider the Arthur years a period of great economic performance. Look at both regional and global economic growth between 1994 and 2008,, then look at economic growth in Barbados and remind me of this great economic performance.
Once Arthur has been buried, with the respect due a former prime minister, we will return to look at the economic performance of Barbados under Arthur, a trained economist

You delve into forms of intellectual positions but never once have been kind enough to go beyond denouncing what you apparently think is pure failure. It is time you put your ideas of how the Caribbean at least should go forward. Please don’t hide behind : “ we have published elsewhere”. Direct the BU family where to find your offerings. You know better than what you’re constantly doing here on BU. Put your works out there and let them be scrutinized the same way you scrutinize others.
None of the great minds who you and I have been exposed to will condone your current approach. The only reason you can admire West and others is the simple fact that they have put their works out there and you need to that.

I have long dismissed the argument that Arthur’s management of the economy was genius. Competent yes. Genius no. However one cannot deny that he is head and shoulders above all since Barrow. He even surpassed Barrow in some ways.
One of his major failures was the failure to radically bring the infrastructure up to a proper sustainable level.
As for Thatcher and Reagan. I don’t know whose world they improved.

  45. It was stated by former minister Hinkson while debating the matter that all who contributed to the initiative will be recognized in due course.

  46. @ William

That is why I have said that Arthur’s great contribution would have been to write his memoires. He was an intelligent man, so there must have been reasons why he was stymied in his policy making.
Why did he sell BNB and ICBL? By the way, don’t dismiss the 1961 Barrow government. On reflection a lot of the policies were bad, but that is with the wisdom of hindsight
    .

  47. Rejects should keep low profile

    How low can you go?

That seems to be the question this week with a major announcement coming from the belly of George Street.

As the country was mourning one of its greatest political leaders, out came the news that one of his political foes was being resurrected. The reaction was swift and condemning and social media was so scathing in its attack that some of the more reputable media houses had to constantly police the comments. There was great fear of legal reprisal based on the accusations that were being levelled at the individual, followed by some offensive language.

Some did not like the idea of the timing of the announcement because of the sombre atmosphere prevailing. For Cou Cou, that did not matter.

More Barbadians were concerned that the losing candidate, after being soundly rejected at the last polls, had the gall to offer himself again. But what has political observers more peeved is that the party seems to be endorsing this candidate after the resounding defeat and clear rejection of the party’s slate two years ago.

    Why? they asked.

The leader, said some Barbadians, should be surrounding herself with new blood and forever banishing many of the former candidates.

While some have been forgiving of several of the losing candidates, the diehards from the opposing party are not that accommodating.

    Old-timers

Neither are some within the organisation, who would rather these old-timers offer themselves as mentors rather than looking to jump back into the political fray.

The experts are saying the leader should be firm enough to bar some of those looking to return

and instead clear the slate by at least half.

Speaking of leaders, those looking on said a big gaffe was made earlier this week when the head joined others here and overseas in paying tribute.

It seems that not once in the tribute did the name of the beloved leader come from her mouth. The omission did not escape the listening ear of the members of the public.

The comments on social media were not at all complimentary and some regarded the action as a sign of uncharacteristic immaturity for a leader. They are telling the leader to grow up and grow up fast since the next big outing is just around the corner.

That approach of choking on people’s names will fast draw the ire of the public.

A knighthood may be in the waiting for PTL .
Relax – what dont come in a year can come in a day (someone said earlier)”
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

But how can that ever be?

Isn’t PLT anti-monarchist to the core?

We just can’t have two Sir Hilarys in little Bim, can we now?

How about the GCM or Pride of Barbado(e)s?

But such an outstanding recognition would require a public acknowledgment of the fact that the policy was clearly not born from any of MAM’s ‘own’ ideas.

BTW, what has ever become of that “proposal” to create a duty-free shopping zone for Bajan consumers providing they pay in ‘reputable’ foreign currencies?

Poor Chris P. Sinliar (BS. E and archangel of thieving other people’s ideas) must be really piss*ed off that he is being overlooked in this M(o)uttley-type medal feast.

    Intellectual humility?

That would not be our characterization.

  50. I must repeat myself, because the lesson was not learnt.

Some get carried away by the 30-0 and forget the underlying statistics behind behind the overall victory. The massive victory (72%) is derived from the 60% of the electorate that voted..

This turns out to be a massive 42% of eligible voters.
Put that next to the massive 40% of eligible voters that did not vote.

The DLP at 24% only recieved 13% (22×60/100) of the eligible voters. If the could find a way to energize 75% of those who did not vote then the massive” and overwhelming victory is threatened. Behind all the celebration must be the nagging thoughts
What if that 75% of the missing voters become activated?
What if some of those who voted for us and change become disenchanted”?
