The FBI is investigating the death of George Floyd, black man who was pinned on the neck by a police officer and later died in custody. Minnesota’s Attorney General Keith Ellison joins The Beat with Ari Melber’s breaking coverage on the latest from the FBI and the protests. While the officers involved have yet to be charged, Ellison argues a “quick arrest” might “make people feel better about justice” it is “important” for investigators to “take the time to make sure that these charges, if they are brought forward, stick.

    Three White police officers kneel of a compliant Black man and deliberately murder him, but we can’t arrest them until we have a thorough investigation… a Black CNN reporter can be arrested immediately while standing in the street where the police told him to stand while patiently and politely asking the police where they would like him to stand because he does not want to get in their way.

    This is America. The racism goes so deep and is internalised by so many people both Black and White, that only a social revolution has any chance of breaking this evil cycle.

    Of course there have been murders of Black men by Black policemen in Barbados. It is not relevant to the discussion of racism in the USA.

    ln the USA I’ve been stopped by police for DWB, Driving While Black, on three separate occasions in different States. Simply driving a nice car in a well to do neighborhood was enough to put me in jeopardy. I discovered after the first incident that the most effective way of defusing the situation was to ask very politely whether I needed to contact the Canadian Embassy. (Note that I have also stopped for DWB in Canada where I lived for much longer, and that ruse does not work there.) I have been subjected to innumerable other instances of racism while visiting or residing in the USA. I am married to a Black American woman who has been subjected to many more than I. The subject of the current discussion is racist violence in the USA, particularly when the police are the assailants.

    If you want to research and write an article on extrajudicial killings by the Barbados police then feel free to do so and ask David to publish it. You already hide behind a pseudonym so that should present no problem.

    Let me add that I try to avoid discussing racism in the US on BU.

    One of the reason that I do so, is because some of the positions taken or comments made by some “Barbadian” bloggers are painful for me. I may not have made my position clear, so let me state this just once the USA is a fruit riddled with vile and racist people/areas/institutions/organizations. I do not fool myself that it is the land of milk and honey.

    By the way, there are many instances where one must destroy before one can build. That racist system is so entrenched that it has to be demolished before a new system can be built.

    As TheO said you have to hit the powerful white man where it matters. – in their pockets. That’s the only way to get their attention. Buildings mean more to them than black bodies.

    Donna, a general remark re your Rodney King post…It may seem absurd as a key HISTORICAL reference re Black civil rights/oppression but it’s all about our perspectives. Many currently argue that now fifty plus years later many of those under-40 have a faltering resonance with the Dr King era…and that’s fundamentally true in the same way that Marcus Garvey, DuBois, C.L.R James etc did not resonate as loudly for many of us too. Yes, we – as do them- know the history and read of those fighters for justice but Malcolm, Dr MLK or Stokely Carmichael/Huey Lewis invaded our mental space… much as the violent images of that Rodney King struggle or the absolutely, absurd senseless killing of Philando Castile does for this Black-Lives-Matter generation!

    I would not equate what happens in Barbados to the USA. However, I can understand the feelings of some who do so.

    I seem to recall someone describing what happens in Barbados as “Classism”, Let me tell you this. Whatever, you call it, it burns, it is bitter, it is something you run from and do not forget and it is something that I could not return to.

    I have seen it describe as apartheid and in many ways it seem like apartheid without an open white ruling minority.

    But I would not equate what happens in Barbados to the USA. But it still hurts.

(Note that I have also stopped for DWB in Canada where I lived for much longer, and that ruse does not work there.) I have been subjected to innumerable other instances of racism while visiting or residing in the USA. I am married to a Black American woman who has been subjected to many more than I. The subject of the current discussion is racist violence in the USA, particularly when the police are the assailants.

    Doctors take exams to qualify. Lawyers similarly take exams, e.g on Ethics. Economists and Accountants also take exams. Scientists take exams. Everyone takes exams.

    I read somewhere that here in the USA, where licensing requirements and regulations abound and exist virtually everywhere, for everything, anyone for instance who sells and buys eggs In Missouri must be licensed and must renew their license annually presumably for a small fee. In Oregon, the man or woman who breaks eggs to recover egg whites, yolks, etc must also have an eggbeater’s license.

    From my perspective, therefore, Fmr. P.O Derek Chauvin’s who murdered George Floyd, an unarmed black civilian, in cold blood, once again, repeat once again, underlines the dire need to subject ALL Police and Recruits engaged in Policing and in matters of Life and Death, to be subject to RIGOROUS, MANDATORY, COMPREHENSIVE, PSYCHIATRIC AND/OR CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING FOR ALL POLICE OFFICERS & RECRUITS, REPEATED AT SELECT INTERVALS.

    Some bloggers have gone off the rails and tried to conflate police misconduct in Barbados with white cops in the US ritually murdering blacks in the US WITH RELATIVE IMPUNITY.

    But whether in Barbados or in Minnesota, beating, torture and murder of the innocent, unarmed civilian is equally unlawful.

    Going forward, part of the solution might therefore be to require and maintain a system of thorough comprehensive psych/ examination of every recruit to the Regional (Caribbean) Police Training School, just as I have argued for such mandatory psych testing in all jurisdictions in the US.

    Successful completion of the psych part of the curriculum would be worth 30% of the Officer’s final grade.

    Some sickos, e.g The Golden State Killer, J.J. DeAngelo, will always escape detection, but such mandatory comprehensive tests for those entitled to use deadly force might help to weed out undesirables.

    Failing such, the only alternative would seem to be for blacks everywhere in the U.S to strictly adhere to the Second Amendment and all that that entails.

    Corruption is endemic to the Democrats.

    Rogue cops, rogue politicians … rogues in general, thrive.

    That is not to say Republicans are saints.

    Look at the FBI under Obama and the Democrats and the exposure it is getting now … Comey, Brennan, Klapper etc etc etc.

    And now look at life under COVID-19 in Red and Blue states.

    The only conclusion to be drawn is that the colour blue is inimical to both black and white.

    Wife of officer charged with murder of George Floyd announces she’s divorcing him

    Kellie Chauvin, the wife of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, said she is filing for divorce after 10 years of marriage.

    In a statement issued by her attorney, Kellie Chauvin said she is devastated by the killing of 46-year-old George Floyd, who died earlier this week while in police custody.

    Kellie Chauvin’s attorney said she filed for divorce as a result of this week’s incident.

    Derek Chauvin is facing third-degree murder and manslaughter charges after video surfaced showing him kneeling on Floyd’s neck for for more than 8 1/2 minutes while he pleaded for his life.

    “Her utmost sympathy lies with [Floyd’s] family, with his loved ones and with everyone who is grieving this tragedy,” the statement read in part. “While Ms. Chauvin has no children from her current marriage, she respectfully requests that her children, her elder parents, and her extended family be given safety and privacy during this difficult time.”

    No one is “stupid enough to think this is somehow helping [right now]…” so yes, it’s a bit counter-productive but life can be a real bit** at times…. After the Rodney King violence that forced lawmakers to think differently and change… just as John Lewis getting his head bashed in and King’s assassination changed things … slowly, but surely they changed!

    No “[a] normal person is [not] gonna say give them what they want [without a fight]…” thus these riots must spin into meaningful change… and eventually they will….

    But YES ‘[GOOD] cops [are] going to get involved rather than just collect the pay”… bad cops like this dude WILL NOT.

    BTW, when hordes of angry white racists attacked, burned businesses and killed Black residents of Greenwood in Tulsa, Oklahoma US in mid 1921, an entire community of successful Black folks was destroyed… never to be rebuilt. And that’s just one glaring, big-scale example.

    No one wants desolation and blight but no one wants blatant racial hypocrisy and unchecked racial profiling leading to a easily preventable death… either….. Please don’t ask for reason and commonsense NOW, after an act of complete depraved indifference to human life.

    Rioters Destroy Bar That Black Minneapolis Firefighter Bought with His Life Savings

    Rioters protesting the death of Minneapolis resident George Floyd, an African-American man who died after being arrested and pinned to the ground by officer Derek Chauvin, destroyed a bar owned by a black former firefighter Wednesday night.

    Korboi Balla had invested his life savings in the bar and was planning to open it before the coronavirus pandemic caused mass business closures. Balla then moved the opening date to June 1, when Minnesota plans to lift restrictions on restaurants, but the bar has since been wracked and looted in the riots, CBS first reported.

    CBS was filming a segment at the bar when looters entered through the back of the establishment to try to steal Balla’s safe.

    “I don’t know what we’re going to do,” Balla said in an interview. “It hurts, man. It’s not fair, it’s not right. We’ve been working so hard for this place. It’s not just for me, it’s for my family.”

    Balla’s wife Tywanna said that the bar was not insured.

    “Yes people are mad and upset, I get that and I understand the protest, I’m hearing people say F*** the business they have insurance WELL WE DON’T AND THIS IS ALL OUT OF POCKET!!!” Tywanna wrote in a Facebook post. “Let someone come run in your home and loot for the cause then and let’s see you be ok with it!”
