Your message to the BLOGMASTER was sent

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to soak up the resources for both under developed and developed countries. At the time of posting this blog the global medical community has been unable to inform about a vaccine. The blogmaster read the perspective of a leading Australian virologist recently where she opined that the world will have to live with the virus, in fact it will become as accepted as the Flu.

The disruption caused by COVID-19 will impact service based economies like Barbados and others in the reason where it hurts, in the breadbasket. One could rehash old arguments about the folly of putting all our eggs in one basket. If we are to work hard to move from the unsustainable position we find ourselves, we have to do more to shift our over reliance on tourism. Government’s current investment pipeline has signaled there are no immediate or medium term plans to modify the economic engines firing the economy.

If there ever was an opportunity to message our leaders there is an urgent need to reorder how we do business, it is now.

COVID-19
Since this news alert Italy is virtually on lock down. Thanks John A for always feeding the blogmaster with important information.

The local authorities based on public announcements and news coverage have been rolling out awareness campaigns, bumping up screening at ports of entry, building health infrastructure and leading discussions at the regional level to ensure a regional COVID-19 approach. Given the pandemic nature of COVID-19, it seems a matter of time before Barbados reports its first case. The biggest challenge for Barbados and service based economies is the fatalistic impact disruptions to global supply chains will bring.

AND ALL THE BRIMBLING BY BU BLOGGERS OR THE US MAIN STREAM MEDIA CANT DO ONE THING BOUT UM

AS A PUBLIC TRAINED MAN MYSELF, I THINK THAT TRUMP AND CO HAS DONE REMARKABLE JOB SO FAR

EVEN AT THE TIME THE DEMS WERE IMPEACHING HIM IN JANUARY HE TOOK THE FIRST FUNDAMENTAL PUBLIC HEALTH STEP TO AVERT DISASTER—–AND HE WAS CURSED FOR DOING SO

  2. Corona virus was finally declared by W.H.0 a few hours ago officially as a pandemic according to The Telegraph and The New York Times.

  3. For the record the last time WHO declared a pandemic was in 2009 for the H1N1 influenza outbreak.

  4. Well, we have arrived. Ottawa just confirmed its first case of corona virus and already there is a run on toilet paper. Mayor and chief med. officer having a news conference at 3:00 to brief and advise the City on next steps.

“Syphilis was prevalent in Europe long before Columbus!!!”

You are correct. There is a You Tube video showing excavations being done in the UK on sites that predated Columbus’s voyages to this part of the world. Subsequent examination of the bones showed that all of the traits associated with Syphilis were present. The analysis was done by Universities. There has been an attempt to blame the natives of the New World for Syphilis, but in the light of the new findings, that attempt was shot down.

  7. @v Mariposa March 11, 2020 12:48 PM

Stop being an alarmist. Calling it a pandemic is not going change anything.

  8. Ah Italy where it is customary to greet by kissing on both cheeks

  9. Kiss on both cheeks indeed, certainly a death sentence for some time. Someone just tried to hug me and am like, i am too fragile dear….gotta cut out all this hugging and kissing for quite a while.

  10. Best advice, isolate yourself and keep your immunine system up…cause am sure this cold advice of stop treating the elderly who has corona virus will catch on like wildfire. Although they do not have a lot of choice, it’s first come, first served and who has the strength to live the longest.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8101135/Intensive-care-units-stop-treating-elderly-coronavirus-outbreak-worsens.html?ito=facebook_share_article-top&fbclid=IwAR2RutRDK1oqjhyv5NPE33AEHxUcRwhmeUBv-Q8BAVAjyN9Cc6ST-JChA2o

“The death toll from the coronavirus outbreak in Italy has jumped in the last 24 hours by 196 to 827 as a top Italian doctor said intensive care wards should place an age limit on beds.

Rather than admit patients on a ‘first come first served’ basis, hospitals should swap to ‘catastrophe medicine’ guidelines – typically used in war zones and during natural disasters – where those with the greatest chance of survival are given priority.

The guidelines should apply to all patients needing intensive care treatment and not just those suffering from coronavrius, according to guidance published this week by the Society of Anesthesia, Analgesia, Resuscitation and Intensive Care (SAARI).

If a limit on beds is implemented it could mean elderly patients with no signs of coronavirus being turfed off ICU wards to make space for younger patients who have longer left to live.”

  11. Lucas
Are u calling me an alarmist when i spoke to a fact which was issued by WHO
Fortunately i do not live in a bubble like the rest of you so called intellectuals
If it is a spade i call it a spade
Just maybe before you retaliate at the facts you should engage your self in fact finding
No i am not a microbiologist neither do i engage in lickmout bajanstyl e utterances just because………

  12. It’s a brace yourself time, there is no way around it, it was not taken seriously enough from the beginning, so this is the fall out.

“Denmark – which has 514 confirmed cases, up 10-fold since Monday, but no deaths so far – is to close all schools and universities from Friday and will send home all public sector employees who are not in critical roles in the coming days. The government also urged the cancellation of events with more than 100 people attending.

Meanwhile India has suspended most visas for foreigners until 15 April and Guatemala is banning European citizens from entering from Thursday.

What is the situation in Italy and Iran?
The country has already closed schools, gyms, museums, nightclubs and other venues across the country.

It has more than 12,000 confirmed cases and a death toll of 827. Nearly 900 people with the virus in Italy were in intensive care, the WHO’s emergencies head Michael Ryan said.

Dr Ryan said the situation in Iran – where the official figures are 354 deaths among 9,000 cases – was “very serious”. The WHO had sent 40,000 testing kits to Iran but there was still a shortage of ventilators and oxygen.

“Iran and Italy are suffering now but I guarantee you other countries will be in that situation very soon,” he said.

“The coronavirus outbreak intensified overnight in the US as the number of confirmed cases jumped, the death toll increased to 31 and a top federal health official warned America on Wednesday that the worst was yet to come.

Two more states declared a state of emergency the number of US cases exceeded 1,000 nationwide. There have been a total of 31 confirmed deaths.”

  14. ” If you are at higher risk of getting very sick from COVID-19, you should:
    Stock up on supplies.
Take everyday precautions to keep space between yourself and others.
When you go out in public, keep away from others who are sick, limit close contact and wash your hands often.
Avoid crowds as much as possible.
Avoid cruise travel and non-essential air travel.
During a COVID-19 outbreak in your community, stay home as much as possible to further reduce your risk of being exposed.”

  19. Someone please tell me that the Costa Magica is not the very same cruise liner that Ms.”fighting Imperialism” glided onto all glowing and gushing that she thought it was her birthday, same ship now being quarantined for that fast moving Corona virus as a suspect…. i’ll be damned for even thinking that it’s true…well at least she took a bunch of hangerson with her, so she will not be alone if shit happens..

    https://www.stlucianewsonline.com/coronavirus-suspected-in-cruise-ship-off-martinique/?fbclid=IwAR3k347C6XoCQ1sgbNHkpA9GtZVjWVDUYCU5nXUIXbscIS0Efw8CvHhy6rI

“A cruise ship, which was denied entry into several Caribbean islands including Saint Lucia, will not be allowed to dock in Martinique because there are several sick people on board and coronvirus is suspected.

The Costa Magica was expected to dock in Fort-de-France on Thursday, March 12, but 24 hours before its arrival, the prefecture of Martinique and the French Regional Health Agency (ARS) said there were at least five sick people on board.”

  20. Wuhloss…the wealthy and rich are running for their lives, ducking and dodging Senor Corona…so much for being invincible and untouchable..ah wonder where Barbaods’ pretend wealthy off other people’s pain and misery are planning to run to, everyone would be happier if they go and never return.

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/11/disease-dodging-worried-wealthy-jet-off-to-disaster-bunkers?fbclid=IwAR3qMvhm-KU5S3T56aSkp13DMHfdjRUSVVAm34kuR6KAjLeyLSZQt_SQ-KA

“Like hundreds of thousands of people across the world, the super-rich are preparing to self-isolate in the face of an escalation in the coronavirus crisis. But their plans extend far beyond stocking up on hand sanitiser and TV boxsets.

The world’s richest people are chartering private jets to set off for holiday homes or specially prepared disaster bunkers in countries that, so far, appear to have avoided the worst of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Many are understood to be taking personal doctors or nurses on their flights to treat them and their families in the event that they become infected. The wealthy are also besieging doctors in private clinics in Harley Street, London, and across the world, demanding private coronavirus tests.”

  21. Note to Ms Fighting Imperialism, you cannot give all clears to any cruise liners or planes for that matter, the incubation period for the Corona is too wide and varied, you wil be misleading the public and putting people in danger of becoming infected..

  22. This pandemic gives us the opportunity to change how we debate the issues. A time to foster community spirit. A time to come together. It is not a time to gloat.

  23. Maybe i am not prone easily to believe all of govts utterances i tend to observe

WHO keeps making statements that older people over 60 are most at high risk
Even though it is factually true that older people health are comprised in most virus
The fact that older people are amongst the first grouping that have contacted the virus gives me an observation that the elderly who have contacted the virus are those who travelled in countries where the virus is at its worst
In fact the jury is still out as to whether younger people would contact the virus as there are least most likely to do long distance travels or cruises in ways and manner that the elderly does
Maybe the best step forward is to include everyone as a better step of containing the virus
The latest i heard was a woman in her 50’s in fla had contacted the virus which means the number 60and up might be revised

  24. @ David BU re: March 12, 2020 6:40 AM

    Good advice, Mr. Blogmaster.

And, I’ll add, two ways we can change the way we debate issues, foster community spirit and come together, is if we put an END to POLITICIZING every issue…….. and THINKING a bit more positively, rationally and reasonably when debating the issues.

  25. poor pea brain
not only got a strange way of thinking but also of understanding

  26. @David.

That move by Trump to block traffic from Europe is a massive blow to our cruise ship sector. Most of the Europeans who cruise the Caribbean fly into Florida to take the cruise.

Bajans need to stop repeating everything they read in the media now and start thinking for themselves on how Trumps move last night will affect us here on the rock. Remember too that flights into Puerto Rico will also be addressed the same way.

People leave out the politics and parrot behaviour now and think on what this means.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Are we there yet?

  31. Yes UK exempt but ALL the EU in the net.

  32. John A,

We shall not escape unscathed. It is a pandemic. Maybe the silver lining is that we will FINALLY come to an understanding that we must get back to basics.

    Agriculture, anybody?

I still have my Carmeta cookbook.

  33. In 2018 14% of cruise ship trade was North American with Europe being the second biggest traveller at 7%.

  34. @ David March 12, 2020 6:40 AM

That is why we must seek to constantly impress upon the current administration the growing ‘emergency need’ to expend more ‘energy’ in getting Barbados prepared for the coming economic tsunami and less on optics like “We Gatherin’”.

As the USA turns itself into a veritable quarantine camp to fight off the pandemic
it will soon be imposing a ban on all travel to and from the Caribbean suspected of having ‘vulnerable’ public and private health care systems in place.

Barbados’s recent track record in maintaining its public health practices to acceptable ‘high’ hygiene standards leaves a lot to be desired.

The reluctant handling of the south coast sewage spillage and island-wide deficiencies in garbage collection (not to mention the burning dump right in the centre of the island with the Sandy Lane icon of up-market tourism right down wind in its plain but very smoky sights) are not encomiums to write about.

The government is being advised, accordingly, with no consultancy fees involved.

Get those fields back into cultivation ASAP!
Barbados does not command a top position in the world when it comes to demanding its ‘hog’s’ share of ‘imported’ food supplies in a growing nervous, risky and insecure food exporting markets.

You will never see such agricultural sacrilege in Europe or other places like Singapore where the security of local food production is of growing major importance and is sine qua non to economic development and sustainability of the good health of citizens.

There is a pressing need to focus now on the country’s bread and butter issues.

To be forewarned is to be forearmed. The ball of attack and racket of defence are both in your court, MAM!

The parades and ‘parties’ celebrating with their trumpeting bands of republicanism can follow.

  35. @ Donna

Good for you break out the Bajan recipes and ground provisions. Heard Trump last night also speak to ” items from China ” being a concern but he did not go into details there.

  36. A

the cruise ships started suspending cruises for 60 days

  37. John A,

Don’t have to break it out. I’ve been using it for years. My sixteen year old son was raised on it. Pity Carmeta died. She had a big personality that was impossible to ignore. Could have made the difference.

  38. Shit like this happens when mankind “f”with nature
The laws of God and the laws of Nature are the same
Everything mankind touch they have destroyed that belongs to the environment
Mankind must learn they do not own the environment it was loan to us for safe keeping
Mankind has shown how easy it is to put self on a one way path to self destruction
Pollution of our most vital sources for healthy living has been an ongoing occurrence for many years
Now the benefits are harsh and severe
    God help us all
For what mankind has sown mankind is reaping
    Not Good

  39. Maybe one of the fowls, if this even registers, can point out to Ms. Fighting Imperialism, that this is the reality about the virus before she runs off to falsely clear another cruise liner. This info is from those who have been on the frontline from Dia Uno.

“BEIJING : Patients with the new coronavirus keep the pathogen in their respiratory tract for as long as 37 days, a new study found, suggesting they could remain infectious for many weeks.

In yet another sign of how difficult the pandemic may be to contain, doctors in China detected the virus’s RNA in respiratory samples from survivors for a median of 20 days after they became infected, they wrote in an article published in the Lancet medical journal.

The new coronavirus has spread to 118 countries and infected about 125,000 people since first emerging in Wuhan, China, at the end of last year, evading drastic efforts by local authorities and subsequent containment attempts in other nations.

The findings have “important implications for both patient isolation decision-making and guidance around the length of antiviral treatment,” Fei Zhou from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and the other authors wrote.

Currently, the recommended isolation period after exposure is 14 days to avoid spreading the virus. But if people remain contagious long after their symptoms have vanished, they may unwittingly propagate the pathogen after they return from quarantine.

By comparison, only a third of patients with SARS still harbored the virus in their respiratory tract after as long as four weeks, the Chinese scientists said. They studied the medical records and laboratory data from 191 Covid-19 patients treated at Jinyintan Hospital and Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital, including 54 who died from the infection.”

  40. PEA BRAIN

The over age 60 saga means that most of the people that are dying from the virus are over 60 yrs old.
not all that poop you talking about

younger people can be infected as easily as and older person but they are also the one who tends to survive/less complications

  41. ” It is not a time to gloat.”

I reserve the right to gloat at the tiefing racists who anointed themselves superior over the African descended and are now running from a virus they cant even see. I will be sure to continue reminding them about that at every opportunity.

Wuh if the cousins in the palace could get an upclose and personal introduction to my pleasant manner…who the hell are a bunch of wuss aka paper gods running from a virus…lol

  42. Dem S hole European countries exporting a “foreign” virus to our pristine shores so we gwine ban their ass except Britain of course which has more people suffering from coronavirus than some European countries that are on the list (wuh even a British Health Minister has the virus) but we is de boss.

  43. “The reluctant handling of the south coast sewage spillage and island-wide deficiencies in garbage collection (not to mention the burning dump right in the centre of the island with the Sandy Lane icon of up-market tourism right down wind in its plain but very smoky sights) are not encomiums to write about.”

Watch that return to bite them in the ass, when they cussed the countries that issued travel advisories to protect their citizens from their raw sewage creation and let them know in no uncertain terms that they had any amount of shit running in their streets too….damn idiots.

To protect everyone there will have to be a protracted shutdown over time, it is time to think more about the welfare of the citizens and not corona virus infected PAPER MONEY coming from the nonprogressive one horse tourism .

  44. ” Princess Cruises, the operator of two coronavirus-stricken ships, said on Thursday it would suspend global operations of its 18 cruise ships for TWO MONTHS, sending shares of its parent company Carnival Corp down 22% in premarket trading.”

  45. SEE HOW COUNTRIES THAT HAVE CONTROLLED THEIR BORDERS HAVE LIMITED THE SPREAD OF CORONOVIRUS…

  46. @ John 2

You said that ALL cruise ships out of Florida and PR have suspended trips for 60 days? Was in a meeting so didn’t hear that!
