The Coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to soak up the resources for both under developed and developed countries. At the time of posting this blog the global medical community has been unable to inform about a vaccine. The blogmaster read the perspective of a leading Australian virologist recently where she opined that the world will have to live with the virus, in fact it will become as accepted as the Flu.

The disruption caused by COVID-19 will impact service based economies like Barbados and others in the reason where it hurts, in the breadbasket. One could rehash old arguments about the folly of putting all our eggs in one basket. If we are to work hard to move from the unsustainable position we find ourselves, we have to do more to shift our over reliance on tourism. Government’s current investment pipeline has signaled there are no immediate or medium term plans to modify the economic engines firing the economy.

If there ever was an opportunity to message our leaders there is an urgent need to reorder how we do business, it is now.

Since this news alert Italy is virtually on lock down. Thanks John A for always feeding the blogmaster with important information.

The local authorities based on public announcements and news coverage have been rolling out awareness campaigns, bumping up screening at ports of entry, building health infrastructure and leading discussions at the regional level to ensure a regional COVID-19 approach. Given the pandemic nature of COVID-19, it seems a matter of time before Barbados reports its first case. The biggest challenge for Barbados and service based economies is the fatalistic impact disruptions to global supply chains will bring.

    If I was a bad guy, and I am not a bad guy. If I wanted to depopulate the world I would not use corona which is killing mostly old men who are no longer ableto get erections, and old women whose ovaries have long since dried up.

    Did it not strike you as it did me that perhaps a good number of these old people have spent a lifetime smoking tobacco and whose lungs are therefore already compromised?

    Not one waiting to be told by anyone how to manage my life
    I have stocked up on all necessary health supplies and canned items also pkg goods including water to last me for six months
    The govt here has dragged its feet believing that this virus would eventually disappeared but the writing on the wall says different
    In meanwhile in international countries as lockdown occurs and people fight over food supplies and basic necessities govt decided to hold a meeting
    But then again nothing new here this was to be excepted as always after the horse has bolted

    A couple observations, the reported case in Jamaica entered the country last Wednesday WITHOUT showing symptoms.

    Interesting to note Atherley, De Peiza and Clarke head of the private sector have thrown support behind the prime minister and government. They have answered the cry for national unity.

    Did you really think you had to enlighten me about the Aztecs and the like? Miller, I have always read everything I get my hands on. The question was rhetorical.

    I have told you MANY TIMES that my defence of Anglicanism and Christianity extends to any other religion that preaches peace and love for ALL God’s creatures but each time we interact you seem to put me in some kind of small box labelled “Blind and unenlightened”. Are you having memory problems?

    As for whether or not I would join Silly Woman in calling God “she” I would again have to ask if you are having memory problems. I have done so before and also used He/She, spoken of God as mother and suggested that we create a new pronoun since He/She is cumbersome. You would also be surprised to know that my use of He
    /She was legitimized by one tutor at Codrington College who spoke of the words used to describe the Holy Spirit in certain languages as being feminine.

    P.S. As a small child, my younger brother always spoke of God as “She”. That, I surmised even then, was because in his small world it was our mother who laid down the law. My father was more laid back. In a male-dominated society, God would naturally be spoken of as “He”. Even as a young girl I figured that one out.

    Police are investigating claims of a racially-aggravated assault at Manchester United’s football stadium, after a 19-year-old who used to play for the club’s youth development team said he was attacked by security guards and left with a fractured eye socket as he tried to get to his job at the ground.

    Greater Manchester police confirmed on Tuesday that they were looking into a report of a public order offence and assault by two men at Old Trafford on 27 February.

    Alleged victim Kamarl Nelson, who had also been a ball boy for the club and will go to university to study football science later this year, was on his way to work on a cleaning shift when the incident happened. The community interest company Kids of Colour said that he had been called “a slave” before being slammed against a wall and hit in the stomach by guards who disputed that he worked at the stadium.

    Controlled Solutions Group (CSG), which is contracted to run security operations for Manchester United, has strenuously denied the allegations against its employees.

    In a post on Twitter, Kids of Colour said guards had not believed Nelson worked at the stadium, despite him arriving in a uniform with Manchester United labels and having worked there for six months.

    At the cellular level, biochemical reactions are mediated (ie: are made possible) by the action of enzymes ( a substance that increases or retards the rate of a biochemical reaction: in chemical reactions enzymes are called catalysts). Enzymes have sites at which the reactants are adsorbed( not absorbed) since the reactions are basically what are known as surface reactions. Zn is also adsorbed at these receptor sites on the surface of the enzyme. If the receptor site has a greater affinity for Zn than it has for the reactants, Zn is adsorbed preferentially, thereby blocking any reaction between the reactants ,thus disrupting the biochemical process.

    You should wish the world well. This is a pandemic and Barbados is and has always been receptive to external shocks.

    Let us hope as a country we emerge from the crisis full in the knowledge we have to change the way we do business. We have to change our attitudes. We have have to reorder the economy.

    Importantly, the silly adversarial positions for the good of party over country need to be tossed throw the window.

    ‘According to Sun, patients treated with Chloroquine demonstrated a better drop in fever, improvement of lung CT images, and required a shorter time to recover compared to parallel groups…’

    ‘The percentage of patients with negative viral nucleic acid tests was also higher with the anti-malarial drug…’

    ‘Chloroquine has so far shown no obvious serious adverse reactions in the more than 100 participants in the trials…’

    Any how nothing is wrong on sharing views on this country economic problems at this time
    Corona did not bring the problems
    The economic problems were here for many years only this present time Corona has expose the economy vulnerabilities for all to see
    Never mind Mia first job was to demolish buildings at tax payers expense and build a park instead of using those funds to improve quality at the QEH
    But that is the kind of political moorings u would rather not speak of
    I clearly remember when past govt had the Ebola problem at its doors all those in opposition to the govt policies did not in as much voice show concern of sympathy or well wishes
    So dont come with your holier than thou utterances lecturing me on what position i should take in my comments

    The critique of our local readiness was welcomed as you suggest. That tension created a more heightened awreness it seems…and not a moment too soon.

    This case highlited on e-news today should scare every Bajan about this freaking virus… in sum, ONE man in the span of a week and a half did the human equivalent of the economic multipler effect and a spread debilitating “divestment” across a local economy to over 100 people…in JUST ONE 10 DAY PERIOD…just so!…now the town is on lock down, military forces deployed to help clean and provide service and life is in a tailspin.

    On March 6, three members of the Young Israel Congregation of New Rochelle, where the attorney attended, tested positive for the virus…. Another two friends of the attorney tested positive, too. And four more people related to the attorney also had the virus, the governor said…. And so did two residents from nearby Rockland County who worked as caterers in the bar mitzvah the attorney was believed to have attended.

    On March 7, the governor announced 23 others linked to the attorney had the virus…. The day after, he said 12 more cases were reported in Westchester County, which is home to New Rochelle. By March 10, there were 108 cases in New Rochelle.]***

    That is UNREAL… it reads like a sci-fi movie script for a novel dystopian B-movie ‘The Living Virus’

    Add … ‘in Barbados’ and that B-movie growth pattern could see us in a very problematic, deadly situation. I hope Ms Mottley doesn’t have to do like that governor.

    And BTW when you talk sbout confusion in US u are spot on.

    I have family in New Rochelle and too other town several miles south of that called Elmont… I was told that an Elmont high school trip this year went to…… ITALY! They returned well before all the hullabooloo erupted BUT one or more of the travellers have apparently been unwell since.

    Not a word about whether it’s a positive or negative test by the NY authorities!

    Not a word about caution or safeguards …. so when they say that they DONT know where this lawyer above got his infection let’s stop and think deep and hard: Do these ‘authorities’ ever tell us ALL we need to know.

    This damn thing is scary freightening!

    A VERY GOOD EXAMPLE ACTUALLY

    HE IS WITHIN ESTABLISHED PUBLIC HEALTH PROTOCOLS

    it is stupid to get a test if you have no symptoms

    it is also a waste of resources and the time of lab staff who are already over worked and burdened

    doctors USUALLY order tests when they have examined patients AND wish to confirm a diagnosis, or to monitor a patients disease status

    @David, there is only one test this “friend of mine” ever takes seriously: his loyalty test!

    So what if a few people to whom he has been exposed were themselves possibly exposed to probable virus infected carriers …no big deal… this germ fighting, healthy eating, cardio maintenance dynamo is indefatigable and unstoppable 🤣!

    But seriously tho, the expert medical/biology practioners above explain it well… to what avail for him to be tested if he exhibits great health! In the face of limited tests kits (so they say) it would just be a publicity thing as most citizens would be unable to get similar dispositive tests done.

    But overall his high spirited, very optimistic narrative does border on the edge of irresponsibility…this illness can be lighting fast in scorching a town, city or entire nation!

    Gone, gone.
