David; re. your 4:41 am post;

You are correct but I have indeed considered that cohort of the population.

The reason that the US experts are beating the drum for testing, testing and more testing is to get a handle on what proportion of the general public has been compromised by the virus in any way and has left its signatures in body fluids including blood in the population. The virus is shed from the infected body as the disease is brought under control. When it is controlled it has been found that it takes around 7 days for all particles to be shed from the body. Infected persons are released back into the community when they test negative twice over a period of 2 days.

Barbados, like all of our island neighbours, did or does not have access to large numbers of tests and had to use what we had very sparingly. Thus, the only measure that we had for gauging the incidence of the virus in the population (and a very imperfect one, at that) might be by comparing the evidence of infection levels hinted at by a comparison of the graphs of the progress of the various Covid-19 outbreaks in our Islands.

Most of the world was in the same position as the Caribbean and used the data obtained by the minimal testing of infected people and their contacts and their contacts to produce the graphs we see on such sites as WHO and Worldometer etc. All these graphs give an imperfect picture and significant underestimation of infection levels in the county or country in which the tests are carried out, but, since they are carried out in the same way in each country they might provide some rationale for guesstimating the comparative levels of the infection in various groups of countries.

The data shows that, starting out at essentially the same levels, there was some divergence in relation to the rate of infection and therefore progress of the various outbreaks in various countries. The graphs for Barbados showed low and declining levels of infection from the beginning, peaking at the level of 13 positive cases per day and thereafter showing a slowly declining trend. The individuals who would have contributed to the declining trend would have been primarily from the contact testing but should also have included other individuals referred by Health professionals or who presented themselves to Government institutions because of concern that their symptoms might point to untimely death due to the dread Covid-19.

Amit, in an earlier post on this blog, reported on his initiative of graphing Covid-19 incidence over weekly periods throughout the epidemic, in several Caribbean Islands. If David thinks it is appropriate and Amit agrees I can post a subset of graphs clipped from his data for 6 Caribbean territories which I think could illustrate some of what I have presented above.

  1. A single cohort of international students will contribute a whopping £3.2 billion to the UK economy over 10 years through income tax and National Insurance payments. This amount does not include tuition, rent, transportation, food, entertainment and personal care items and services purchased by the students.

  2. The publication Open Doors 2019 reports that about 62 percent of all international students receive the majority of their funds from sources outside of the United States, including personal and family sources as well as assistance from their home country governments or universities. Students from around the world who study in the United States also contribute to America’s scientific and technical research and bring international perspectives into U.S. classrooms, helping prepare American undergraduates for global careers, and often lead to longer-term business relationships and economic benefits.

Very likely the same situation applies in Canada.

  4. I’m in the process of updating the data to present it in a smaller format that will complement the other available stats or charts on the incidence of Covid-19 in Barbados. So this is an interim submission. These charts for the last week suggest a relatively gradual increase in the incidence of the disease and a better take up of the vaccinations than was evident in previous weeks. Indeed, today’s (Saturday 2) data is the best news for the past month and a half as it showed a substantial reduction in incidence of positive cases. However, we will have to wait until we plateau out and then get into decreasing incidence to get a better idea of where we stand in the overall progress of the disease. Vaccinations can get us out but they must be buttressed by the masking, physical distancing and washing of hands that are essential to overcoming this Variant wave. Of serious note is that the first death of an individual who was fully vaccinated occurred in Barbados this last week – Source: Lyall Small

  5. Pfizer Launches Final Study For COVID Drug That’s Suspiciously Similar To ‘Horse Paste’

Another piece US anti-Ivermectin puzzle may have emerged. On Monday, Pfizer announced that it’s launching an accelerated Phase 2/3 trial for a COVID prophylactic pill designed to ward off COVID in those may have come in contact with the disease.

Coincidentally (or not), Pfizer’s drug shares at least one mechanism of action as Ivermectin – an anti-parasitic used in humans for decades, which functions as a protease inhibitor against Covid-19, which researchers speculate “could be the biophysical basis behind its antiviral efficiency.”

Lo and behold, Pfizer’s new drug – which some have jokingly dubbed “Pfizermectin,” is described by the pharmaceutical giant as a “potent protease inhibitor.”

Apparently India has had some success with ridding Utter Pradesh a city of 240 million people of Covid using invermectin, at least that is what they said…horse worm medicine…go figure, it was initially created to treat humans but worked better for horses…and now working for humans again…..

  8. COVID-19 home quarantine, self-isolation underway as ‘Delta wave’ deepens

    Article bySandy Deane

    Published on
    October 3, 2021
COVID-19 patients will home quarantine and self-isolate as health authorities try to ease the mounting pressure on overwhelmed coronavirus care facilities amid a relentless wave of infections linked to the Delta variant, Health Minister Lt. Col. Jeffrey Bostic has announced.
Doctors have already begun to make rounds of home visitors to monitor the infected, most of whom remain unvaccinated.
At a COVID-19 update from llaro Court Sunday evening Minister Bostic reported: “ We have been able to assess about 591 persons out of a total of 680 and out of those 591 persons, 22 persons were referred to Harrison Point with another 12 in the process of being sent to Harrison Point.
“That is because we are trying desperately to ensure that we get those persons who require urgent or immediate medical attention out of their homes and into facilities so that they can be taken care of and we are doing everything possible to save lives in this process.”
Lt Col Bostic gave an assurance that the patients are being closely monitored to ensure their safety.
He said: “We have a team of medical personnel, doctors and so on who have been contacting these persons on a daily basis and we will continue with that form of assessment also using telemedicine to be able to deal with any situations that might come up.”
From Monday, patients will be receiving thermometers as well as pulse oximeters to keep track of their blood oxygen levels and their condition at home, the health minister said.
He appealed to patients to adhere to the requirements, noting that the programme would have to remain in place until the current ‘Delta wave’ is brought under control.
“Our isolation facilities are very challenged at this point in time because we having more positives than we have been able to discharge persons from isolation thus given the large numbers that we are seeing,” said Lt Col Bostic. “There are some days that we are okay because a lot of people would have been discharged but then there are others where we are significantly challenged because the reverse occurs – so this one has been a very serious challenge for us.
“This is what we will have to do over the next few weeks to arrest this development because this is the first time that we had such a challenge at our isolation facilities. But this is the nature of the game, this is what we are facing and even though it is a significant challenge, it is a challenge that we to have overcome.”
The home quarantine and isolation programme has been endorsed by Dr Anthony Harris, a former director of Medical Services at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and a senior consultant cardiothoracic surgeon.
Dr Anthony Harris, former director of Medical Services, QEH and a senior consultant cardiothoracic surgeon.
At the news conference, he stressed that it was an effective way to handle the current situation.
“I am happy we are going to take on the challenge of home isolation and home quarantine and I would just like to reassure the public. If the public follow the instructions of the medical team it would be a safe and easy undertaking,” said Dr Harris.
The Health Minister also disclosed that health care workers remain under pressure as they care for the increasing number of COVID-19 patients plus general health care requirements.
A team from New York-based Northwell Medical is already on the ground assessing the response at a number of facilities including the Accident and Emergency Department at the QEH.
Lt Col Bostic added that Government has also reached out to private doctors to provide support to the COVID-19 fight.

  10. And still the talk shows are propagating dangerous nonsense. Just yesterday a caller was pontificating that taking the Covid19 vaccine is a sin.

Our epidemiologists have predicted up to 500 new Covid19 cases per day.

The U.S. today issued a level 4 “do not travel” notice.

    I despair for my people.

  11. Theses days it seems that the ambulances are mostly traveling north.

It is most disturbing because I know that they are carrying seriously sick and dying people.

Other people’s fathers and mothers, and sisters and brothers. Little children are losing their grannies and grandads. I feel for those suffering, and for the families suddenly left behind.

As I type this an ambulance passes by.

  12. @Cuhdear

    Wuh yuh want?

Didn’t you hear the PM say that mandatory vaccines would undermine Barbados social capital? As the death toll rises and the economy craters you can rest assured that the social capital will be intact.

God bless Bim on Republic Day

  13. @Sargeant October 5, 2021 10:09 PM “Didn’t you hear the PM say that mandatory vaccines would undermine Barbados social capital?”

I don’t agree with this opinion of the Prime Minister’s.

If the deaths continue at this rate the relatives of the same dead people who did not take the vaccine WILL blame the BLP and the PM.

That is what will undermine the social capital.

There is significant vaccine resistance much of it driven by religious foolishness, unscientific nonsense, and mixed messages coming from the unions, the Ministry of Labor, and some media houses, media “personalities.”

Heard on radio today “vaccination is a sin”

Heard yesterday “I am not taking a vaccine unless the Nation of Islam tells me that I should”

Heard this week from my own cousin whom I offered to drive to a vaccine center, wait for and drive home again, door to door service, “no, I am not ready yet.”

Died this week, in the UK, the 49 year old antivaxxer niece of a friend of mine.

Died last week, not in Barbados but in the Caribbean 2 university mates of little Johnny, both younger than 40.

  14. I find it impossible to understand that a government that was voted in 30-0 is unwilling or unable to mandate a vaccination for the deadliest pandemic in 100 years.

What is the current 29-1 majority for if not to govern in the best interest of the people? Barbados has long had a high degree of vaccine compliance, significantly higher that some places in North America and Europe, now people, including it seems leaders, have been WILLINGLY seduced by the antiscientific nonsense propagated by social media.

Have you forgotten the Toni Moore factor?

  16. The new cases comprise 50 young people under the age of 18

  18. @Hants

A very sobering press conference it was.

  19. @ David,

Barbados needs to do some strategic begging. Time to remind Justin Trudeau that 3 Canadian Banks have been in Barbados for 50 years.

Job one for Glyne Clark is to use his time in Ottawa to beg for help until Covid is manageable.

  20. @Hants

If memory is right the banks have contributed significant sums to the vaccine fund.

  21. @ David,

I was just weaponizing the begging. lol. The PM has portrayed herself as a world stage leader. Surely she can call Trudeau and beg for help.

The Canadian government has always been a friend of Barbados.

  22. My apologies to Adriel Richards and Nation News but I thought that the stats the CMO highlighted today might need some further emphasis. The following extracts are frightening.

“Dire” COVID-19 warning from acting CMO Article by Adriel Richard. Health authorities said on Thursday during a news conference there were currently monitoring close to 1 500 people ………… this did not include the little more than 800 people under medical care that were reported on Wednesday on the national dashboard for the eight isolation facilities around the island.

“If you look at the rate of cases in August of this year, we had 689 cases.

In September, we had more than 3 500 cases of COVID-19 detected. That’s a 500 per cent increase in the number of cases.

“So far for October, we have had over 1 000 cases, so we have so far surpassed the COVID-19 tally for the month of August.”

“It was reported on the dashboard two days ago (on Tuesday) that we had 318 cases in a one-day period, which was significantly higher than the 207 daily cases average up to that point,” he said.

“And on the dashboard (on Wednesday), we had 300 people identified – and there is no doubt that the number for (Thursday) is probably going to be the same, so we have a dire situation on our hands.”…………“What is not reflected in the dashboard is the number of active cases we have. The home isolation programme was started because we had no choice and there were so many people who were COVID-19 positive in the community… We have a significant number of active cases of COVID-19 in Barbados.”

Best again urged Barbadians to get vaccinated against COVID-19 because it was the best chance of stemming the tide of positive cases. “The main concern that I have and what I find disconcerting is the relatively low uptake of vaccines,” he said. “The vaccines are effective and safe, and they can reduce transmission risk, but most importantly, they reduce the severity of the disease. “We are also concerned about the number of people that are dying of COVID-19. More people are going to die when there is more spread of COVID-19 in the community, so we really need people to understand what we are dealing with.” “We really require people in the community to have an understanding as to where we are, why we are here, and what role they can play in helping us to combat this deadly pandemic.”

  23. @David
    Yours@3.24pm

Could you explain the Government strategy? Why is the CMO sounding the alarm about a “dire warning”? It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that we are heading into the abyss. What is the Minister or PM going to do about it? It makes no sense for people to talk about “dire warnings” when no one is listening.

The time for talking is over, stronger measures are required otherwise they will be celebrating Republic Day against a backdrop of hundreds of deaths.

  24. @Sargeant

Funny you should ask because it did not go unnoticed by some the hot button words being used of late. Could it be public health officials are using ‘uncoded’ language directed at the political directorate? Bear in mind Ellis pointed out when appointed that his role is about serving the public’s interest.

  25. David; Re your above post @ 5:53 pm.
You ask; “Could it be public health officials are using ‘uncoded’ language directed at the political directorate?” I suspect that the acting CMO’s language is “uncoded” primarily because the situation is really dire in truth and his words could not really be softened without lying. The stark numbers cannot be whitewashed. The people have been warned.

You also state “Bear in mind Ellis pointed out when appointed that his role is about serving the public’s interest.” The problem here is that the Government will say that they are also serving the Public’s interests. Who adjudicates who wins in a battle where Government and David Ellis have different views about actions that must be taken?

  26. @Lyall

We are in a dark place. Let us see what your graphs turn-up on the weekend.

More than 2 000 in isolation

There are currently more than 2 000 active cases of COVID-19 in Barbados.
During a virtual media conference yesterday hosted by COVID-19 Public Advisor David Ellis, Dr Adanna Grandison, consultant manager of the home quarantine programme, said 1 486 people were in the new home isolation programme.
However, she explained that while those at home were added to the total positive cases, they were not added to the total in isolation.
She said that on Tuesday there were 803 people in Government isolation facilities, which meant there were at least 2 303 people in total isolated with the virus by that date. In the dashboard released yesterday showing statistics for Wednesday, this number changed to 647.
Grandison said they had set up a colour system where those at home were categorised green, yellow or red. She said there were currently 22 urgent (red) cases in the process of being collected and transported to Government isolation while there were 17 people wearing ankle monitors who were in the green category. No figure was given for those in the yellow category.
“These are persons we consider low priority [green] because they most likely do not have symptoms and would be the head people who may attempt to leave home and walk around the community.” Grandison advised people not to tamper with the monitors and to keep them charged or a signal would be sent to the monitoring facility. There is a $50 000 fine and/or a year in prison for violating home isolation.
Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Anton Best expressed grave concern about Barbados’ position as he said the numbers were exploding while the vaccination numbers remained relatively low. He said more people would die if COVID-19 continued to spread.
“We are in a dire situation. Over the last few weeks we’ve had very high incidence of cases of COVID . . . the total number of cases in August was 689 while in September we had 3 500 cases of COVID detected. That’s a 500 per cent increase,” he said, adding the more than 1 000 new cases for October had already surpassed August.
Best said the Delta variant had made containment “extremely difficult”, noting that not enough people were taking the vaccine.
“We are 18 months into this pandemic, we are in the third wave . . . [and] what I find particularly
disconcerting is the fact that we have a relatively low uptake of vaccines. Vaccines are effective, safe, they can reduce transmission risk and, most importantly, they reduce the severity of the disease. We are also very concerned about the number of people dying from COVID,” he said.
Best responded to people in home isolation who were saying they had been trying to get through to the COVID-19 hotline to no avail. He admitted the home isolation system was overwhelmed.
“The numbers have overwhelmed the system. It was only three weeks ago we put this home isolation programme into place and there are still a lot of teething issues.
“We need people to understand this is new to us and we are trying to address [the issues]. We deeply apologise but we will get to you. We are working very hard to get to every single person,” he said.
Grandison advised people to call emergency number 511 as an alternative to the hotline or even polyclinics or private doctors, adding there were plans to establish a dedicated home isolation hotline.

The time has come to release the Ivermectin as part of an early treatment protocol. You have absolutely nothing to lose. If it does not work, it kills some of the parasites we have from all the junk food we eat.

What more evidence than articles like this do you need?

Here is an extract from the article

Both Uttar Pradesh and Delhi have seen an incredible drop in COVID-19 cases because they use Ivermectin early and preventatively. Whereas Kerala, a tiny state located in southern India that is over-dependent on vaccines and less dependent on Ivermectin, has been reporting a significant increase in COVID-19 cases. Keep in mind that Uttar Pradesh has eight times larger population than Kerala.

They are essentially based on the raw data. The data suggests, to me, that we are near the eye-wall of this category 5 hurricane and can go either way into an eventual stable calm or an extended chaotic nightmare of expanding cases .
