David; re. your 4:41 am post;

You are correct but I have indeed considered that cohort of the population.

The reason that the US experts are beating the drum for testing, testing and more testing is to get a handle on what proportion of the general public has been compromised by the virus in any way and has left its signatures in body fluids including blood in the population. The virus is shed from the infected body as the disease is brought under control. When it is controlled it has been found that it takes around 7 days for all particles to be shed from the body. Infected persons are released back into the community when they test negative twice over a period of 2 days.

Barbados, like all of our island neighbours, did or does not have access to large numbers of tests and had to use what we had very sparingly. Thus, the only measure that we had for gauging the incidence of the virus in the population (and a very imperfect one, at that) might be by comparing the evidence of infection levels hinted at by a comparison of the graphs of the progress of the various Covid-19 outbreaks in our Islands.

Most of the world was in the same position as the Caribbean and used the data obtained by the minimal testing of infected people and their contacts and their contacts to produce the graphs we see on such sites as WHO and Worldometer etc. All these graphs give an imperfect picture and significant underestimation of infection levels in the county or country in which the tests are carried out, but, since they are carried out in the same way in each country they might provide some rationale for guesstimating the comparative levels of the infection in various groups of countries.

The data shows that, starting out at essentially the same levels, there was some divergence in relation to the rate of infection and therefore progress of the various outbreaks in various countries. The graphs for Barbados showed low and declining levels of infection from the beginning, peaking at the level of 13 positive cases per day and thereafter showing a slowly declining trend. The individuals who would have contributed to the declining trend would have been primarily from the contact testing but should also have included other individuals referred by Health professionals or who presented themselves to Government institutions because of concern that their symptoms might point to untimely death due to the dread Covid-19.

Amit, in an earlier post on this blog, reported on his initiative of graphing Covid-19 incidence over weekly periods throughout the epidemic, in several Caribbean Islands. If David thinks it is appropriate and Amit agrees I can post a subset of graphs clipped from his data for 6 Caribbean territories which I think could illustrate some of what I have presented above.

  4. Attached are 2 charts for last week. We appear to be at a point where the cases per day have been fluctuating around 300 for nearly 2 weeks now. This suggests to me that there has not been an explosive growth in cases over that period and that there is therefore a reasonable chance that we could be nearing a plateau and then a decrease in cases. However, it can go any way and we all should do our individual parts in scrupulously adhering to the protocols, using our common sense and taking the vaccine – Lyall Small

  5. Private doctors giving jab at offices

    By Barry Alleyne barryalleyne@nationnews.com
Twenty-seven Barbadian doctors are now offering COVID-19 vaccinations at their private offices after being trained.
However, the slow rate of overall vaccine take-up in the country is still a worry to joint coordinator of the National Vaccination Programme, Dr Elizabeth Ferdinand.
In an interview yesterday, the public health specialist said she was hoping more general practitioners would complete the special training so those still suffering from vaccine hesitancy, but who feel more comfortable being inoculated by their private doctors, will come forward in larger numbers.
President of the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners, Dr Lynda Williams, said the programme should help in the long run.
“Some people are waiting for their doctors to give them the vaccine, and we have seen them coming forward. As more and more doctors come forward, we expect there will be another training session,” she said.
Two-part training Ferdinand added that 27 doctors had completed the two-part training session, the first part for handling and storage of the three vaccines (AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Sinopharm) available in Barbados, and the second involving the use of Government’s SHAPE app, the database for storage of all vaccine-related information.
To date, only ten doctors have started giving the jab, with just over 150 patients being inoculated.
“All the doctors who have expressed an interest have been trained. The process is moving. The doctors will have to do it on an appointment basis. It can’t be done as walk-ins because once a vial of vaccines is opened, it has to be used up. They have to work out all the logistics, but it’s not something we can rush into. People have to come forward,” Ferdinand said.
“About 150 vaccinations have been done, and that’s not a big lot. I think it’s those people who don’t want to come to the clinic or go to the pop-ups where there is a crowd or they more trust their GP (general practitioner) to do it. We really need to increase the momentum of vaccinations. There is no rush to get vaccines at the moment like there was in the very beginning,” she said.
“I’m hoping the national programme picks up. We are still a far way from our target. We are only halfway there. We need to do a lot more, and anything that can let the people not be afraid to come forward, I welcome.”
Ferdinand said although the pop-ups in local communities and at business places had led to an increase in vaccination due to their convenience, “there still is no mad rush to get vaccinated as people are just trickling in”.

  8. Nebraska AG Says Doctors Can Legally Prescribe Ivermectin, HCQ for COVID, Calls Out FDA, CDC, Fauci, Media for ‘Fueling Confusion and Misinformation’

At the request of the Nebraska Department of Health, on Oct. 15, Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson issued a legal opinion that Nebraska healthcare providers can legally prescribe ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine for the treatment of COVID, so long as they obtain informed consent from the patient.

The AG’s office emphasized it was not recommending any specific treatment for COVID. “That is not our role,” Peterson wrote. “Rather, we address only the off-label early treatment options discussed in this opinion and conclude that the available evidence suggests they might work for some people.”

Peterson said allowing physicians to consider early treatments will free them to evaluate additional tools that could save lives, keep patients out of the hospital and provide relief for our already strained healthcare system.

    snip

“After receiving your question and conducting our investigation, we have found significant controversy and suspect information about potential COVID-19 treatments,” Peterson wrote.

For example, a paper published in the Lancet — one of the most prestigious medical journals in the world — denounced hydroxychloroquine as dangerous, yet the statistics were flawed and the authors refused to provide analyzed data.

The paper was retracted, but not before countries stopped using the drug and trials were cancelled or interrupted. (my emphasis /GM)

“The Lancet’s own editor-in-chief admitted that the paper was a ‘fabrication,’ a ‘monumental fraud’ and a ‘shocking example of research misconduct’ in the middle of a global health emergency,” Peterson wrote in the opinion.

A recently published paper on COVID recognized that “for reasons that are yet to be clarified,” early treatment has not been emphasized despite numerous U.S. healthcare providers advocating for early treatment and “scores of treating and academic physicians” — who have published papers in well respected journals — urging early interventions.

Simplistic logic dictates that Barbados is in deep spit.

  29. Hants; I agree with you that Simplistic logic dictates that Barbados is in deep spit. but equally simplistic logic might consider that, like Jamaica and Trinidad and Grenada and Guyana, who were also in fairly deep spit before us, we might be nearing plateauing of the Delta spike and a return to manageable incidence of the disease in the not too distant future. The contours of all epidemics suggests that none remain at the sort of levels we are now at indefinitely.

  34. COVID-19 denier and conspiracy theorist Mak Parhar dead at 48
Prominent COVID-19 denier Mak Parhar, who gained profile in both the Flat Earth conspiracy community and anti-mask movement, died at his home in New Westminster [British Columbia, Canada] Thursday. The 48-year-old’s cause of death is not known. A spokesman for the B.C. Coroner Service said a coroner’s investigation, which could take months, will be conducted.
Parhar has been in the news the past two years for spreading COVID-19 falsehoods, operating his yoga studio in contravention of public health orders and for being arrested and charged for disobeying quarantine laws. In a rambling video from Nov. 3, Parhar said he had recently taken ivermectin, a drug that is falsely touted by anti-vaxxers as an off-label treatment for COVID-19, even though he didn’t believe COVID-19 was real. “…That horse parasite remover? So I did take that and I feel like 40 to 50 per cent better. But I am a little bit down right now,” he said in the video.
