David; re. your 4:41 am post;

You are correct but I have indeed considered that cohort of the population.

The reason that the US experts are beating the drum for testing, testing and more testing is to get a handle on what proportion of the general public has been compromised by the virus in any way and has left its signatures in body fluids including blood in the population. The virus is shed from the infected body as the disease is brought under control. When it is controlled it has been found that it takes around 7 days for all particles to be shed from the body. Infected persons are released back into the community when they test negative twice over a period of 2 days.

Barbados, like all of our island neighbours, did or does not have access to large numbers of tests and had to use what we had very sparingly. Thus, the only measure that we had for gauging the incidence of the virus in the population (and a very imperfect one, at that) might be by comparing the evidence of infection levels hinted at by a comparison of the graphs of the progress of the various Covid-19 outbreaks in our Islands.

Most of the world was in the same position as the Caribbean and used the data obtained by the minimal testing of infected people and their contacts and their contacts to produce the graphs we see on such sites as WHO and Worldometer etc. All these graphs give an imperfect picture and significant underestimation of infection levels in the county or country in which the tests are carried out, but, since they are carried out in the same way in each country they might provide some rationale for guesstimating the comparative levels of the infection in various groups of countries.

The data shows that, starting out at essentially the same levels, there was some divergence in relation to the rate of infection and therefore progress of the various outbreaks in various countries. The graphs for Barbados showed low and declining levels of infection from the beginning, peaking at the level of 13 positive cases per day and thereafter showing a slowly declining trend. The individuals who would have contributed to the declining trend would have been primarily from the contact testing but should also have included other individuals referred by Health professionals or who presented themselves to Government institutions because of concern that their symptoms might point to untimely death due to the dread Covid-19.

Amit, in an earlier post on this blog, reported on his initiative of graphing Covid-19 incidence over weekly periods throughout the epidemic, in several Caribbean Islands. If David thinks it is appropriate and Amit agrees I can post a subset of graphs clipped from his data for 6 Caribbean territories which I think could illustrate some of what I have presented above.

Aylmer police say they are investigating and will be pressing charges after “one of the largest services” was held at an Aylmer, Ont. church Sunday morning that has continually defied the province’s COVID-19 rules.

The Church of God at Aylmer held an in-person Sunday service that was also live streamed, where dozens of people were seen congregating indoors while not wearing masks or following physical distancing protocol.

This comes after four people were charged on Tuesday when officers received a tip about a gathering taking place at the church. Police say upon attending, they found 18 people not following public health rules.

MPP Randy Hillier and MP Derek Sloan were among those in attendance during Sunday’s service and spoke alongside Pastor Henry Hildebrandt.

Kristen Nagle, a London, Ont. nurse who was fired after speaking out against lockdown measures and organizing anti-lockdown rallies also attended Sunday’s service.
An anti-lockdown protest was held in Stratford, Ont. later Sunday where Hillier, Sloan and Nagle were also seen attending.

Horvat said Aylmer police have and will continue to take a “gradual” approach to educate and liaison with the church and churchgoers.

“We’ve done that, we’ve done that over the course of the last 13 months and there doesn’t seem to be any will to abide by the current rules,” he said. “We’re at the stage right now where we have no other option, but to proceed with the charges with those who are identified.”

Horvat said while this has a significant impact on the small community of Aylmer, police will continue to take an approach to educate those not abiding by COVID-19 rules.

“From my perspective, I hope and wish that people would understand the current situation that we were in however we can’t control their actions,” Horvat said.

  2. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/london/church-of-god-aylmer-charges-1.5996169

Four people in Aylmer have been charged, with more to come, after the latest gathering at the Church of God at Aylmer, a house of worship that’s become known for its pervasive defiance of Ontario emergency health orders during the pandemic.

Officers with the Aylmer Police Service visited the church on Tuesday night after a tip from the public about a gathering inside the church.

Police allege 18 people who weren’t wearing masks or physically distancing were taking part in an organized event.

Aylmer police Chief Zvonko Horvat told CBC News on Wednesday that the four were charged for failing to comply with the province’s emergency health orders.

“We’re also looking at identifying others and there will likely be more charges laid as a result of yesterday’s incident,” he said.

Since the pandemic began early in 2020, the church has repeatedly been in the media spotlight for its rebellious stance against provincial pandemic orders.

Pastor Henry Hildebrandt has made headlines for his stance on the province’s strict rules against communal gatherings.

Dozens of parishioners and church leaders were fined after the church welcomed worshipers into its sanctuary, allowing them to gather on two separate occasions in January to sing together without masks and without observing the two-metre distance recommended by health authorities to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

The church was served with a restraining order from the Ministry of the Attorney General in February, ordering it to abide by the Reopening Ontario Act.

Lisa Bildy, the lawyer representing the Church of God at Aylmer, told CBC News in an email that she has yet to learn the particulars of the latest charges.

However, she said she is challenging the earlier charges against church leaders and parishioners on constitutional grounds, with a hearing set for July.

Bildy also said in her email that the province could file a motion for the church to be found in contempt of court, if it can prove the church leaders and parishioners violated the restraining order imposed on them in February.

Horvat said Wednesday his officers have been trying to take a measured approach in dealing with the church’s defiance, but it doesn’t seem to be working.

“The fact of the matter is we’ve dealt with that particular group and they seem to be defiant in obeying emergency measures,” he said. “They’re just not getting the message.

“You think that perhaps a warning would suffice and they would comply, but they don’t so the officers are put in the position where they don’t have any other choice but to charge,” said Horvat.

“We can’t be taking these things lightly.”

  3. Fact is, Covid-19 vaccines are safe
THE REPORTING of a small number of rare blood clotting cases with COVID-19 vaccines has been tragically hyped and exaggerated by western media, with little understanding of how rare these associations are and how many times more common are the risks of COVID-19, including much more frequent clots and other serious disorders.
Furthermore, the risks of clotting with the contraceptive pill, of strokes in those over 40 and even of death in a car accident are hundreds or thousands of times greater.
The sensationalism given to these very rare incidents has led some European political leaders to behave in an almost paranoid and illogical manner, discontinuing vaccine use “out of an abundance of caution”, lending fuel to the fire of the eccentric and anti-vaccine lobby and conspiracy theorists.
    Give the facts
It is important for our leaders to point out the facts on the safety of the AstraZeneca and the Johnson & Johnson vaccines, which are straightforward.
In the United Kingdom, where more than 21 million AstraZeneca vaccines have been given, rare blood clots have been reported in people taking it at a rate of roughly seven in every million, whereas: 1. Blood clots occur in the normal adult population at the rate of 1 000 to 2 000 in every million each year, that is, almost 300 times as many, making it difficult to prove the vaccine was the cause.
    2. Blood clots caused by the contraceptive pill affect 1 000 in every million women each year, that is, 140 times as many, 3. There are many reports of blood clots in COVID-19 patients, causing organ damage, failure and death. Again, the incidence is between hundreds and thousands of times the incidence reported in association with the vaccine; and obese people, who are most likely to be severely ill with COVID-19, have several times the risk of the non-obese for clots.
    4. In addition, a brand new study in 236 000 patients with COVID-19 showed many incidents of neurological or psychiatric diagnoses – 34 per cent of all patients, including strokes, dementia, psychotic and anxiety disorders.
    5. Finally, it should be noted that death from a car crash occurs at a rate of 120 to 200 per million each year, and death from stroke occurs at a rate of 300 to 1 000 per million per year, and all strokes occur at several thousand per million each year.
The tiny number of clots that may be caused by a vaccine is insignificant compared with the risk of clotting after COVID-19 infection and compared with the many greater
risks we live with daily in normal life.
Vaccines are safe. COVID-19 infection is not.

  29. Guyana discussing mandatory vaccine
GEORGETOWN – Though vaccination is not mandatory in Guyana, the presence of the deadlier form of the coronavirus and continued breach of the COVID-19 guidelines has forced the government to consider whether it should be compulsory for adults to take the COVID-19 vaccines.
During an interview with the News Room on Saturday, advisor to the Ministry of Health, Dr Leslie Ramsammy, lamented that people have not been adhering to the guidelines instituted to keep the population safe from the spread and adverse impact of the novel coronavirus.
“In spite of the warning circulating that the virus circulating now is a more dangerous virus, a more deadly virus, we seem to think that we are immune that we are not going to be infected by the virus,” Ramsammy lamented.
He explained that if individuals do not wear their face masks properly and avoid large gatherings, then more people will become infected with the virus. Once more people are infected, it means that additional individuals would be more vulnerable to the severe and possibly fatal effects of the virus.
Ramsammy also explained that each time the virus is spread from person to person, it undergoes some change. Cognisant of this, he stated that the SARS-Cov-2 (the virus that causes the disease, COVID-19) currently circulating in Guyana is different from the SARS-Cov-2 that was first detected in March 2020.
    The solution
To combat the spread of this constantly mutating virus, Ramsammy said that widespread vaccination was the solution and not necessarily a total lockdown of the country.
“The same energy that we have to use for a lockdown, we have to use that same energy for people coming to take their vaccines and if we take our vaccines, we will bring some control about,” Ramsammy said.
When asked if vaccination would therefore be made compulsory, the advisor said: “It’s on the table (but) we haven’t made a decision.”
He hastened to add, however, that the local authorities do not want to make taking the COVID-19 vaccines compulsory since, for about 60 years, Guyana has been administering vaccines but has never made it mandatory.
Even as the local health authorities do not necessarily want to make COVID-19 vaccination compulsory, Ramsammy related that some countries and even some companies are asking for individuals to be vaccinated.
At a recent press conference, President Dr Irfaan Ali said the government is prepared to examine all options to help Guyana recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, including a “vaccine passport” in the face of hesitancy by some to get vaccinated and the recklessness of some people in flouting guidelines put in place to prevent the spread of the disease.

  30. Longer quarantine for some BVI visitors
TORTOLA – British Virgin Islands has increased the quarantine period for unvaccinated travellers entering the territory from four days to seven.
During a national broadcast, Minister of Health Carvin Malone said if people are travelling in mixed groups with some individuals unvaccinated, the entire party will be treated as unvaccinated and will be required to quarantine for seven days upon arrival.
“In the case of persons who are only partially vaccinated – meaning that they have received only one dose of a two-dose vaccine or whose final vaccine dose was administered less than two weeks before arrival in the territory – a four-day quarantine period will be required with the PCR testing administered on arrival and on Day 4.”

  31. Airport hopes
Passengers complain of delays as new travel protocols kick in
    by BARRY ALLEYNE
    barryalleyne@nationnews.com
PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICIALS are hoping systems at Grantley Adams International Airport will run smoother the rest of the week, after Government’s newest COVID-19 protocols created a chaotic situation on Saturday.
It was the first day of the protocols which allow fully vaccinated travellers to be tested within a 24-hour period and be permitted to freely move around the country once their vaccination certification was legitimate.
The system had its issues, however, with people having to wait in line for two and a half hours in some instances, as public health officials asked questions, garnered travel information and did their due diligence to accommodate those who needed COVID-19 testing on arrival.
Government officials were also on hand at the airport to get a first-hand look at the operation.
When contacted yesterday, Chief Medical Officer Dr Kenneth George, who was part of Saturday’s official party, accepted that not everything went to plan.
“Yesterday (Saturday) was the first day. We will learn as we go along. Please give it at least a week for some challenges to be resolved,” he told the DAILY NATION.
One returning Barbadian said she understood what the country was attempting to do, but a more simple way needed, especially since tourist numbers could significantly increase now the new protocols made way for fully vaccinated travellers.
Another irate Barbadian on her way home from New York on a JetBlue flight said: “The system is what’s bad, not just the wait. There are too many complicated steps. No one wants to get off a plane and be interviewed by multiple people, asking them the same questions while they wait for more than two hours. They kept asking the same questions over and over again.”
The woman said it was extremely harsh for elderly people coming back home, some of them dealing with diabetic complications and not having a full meal on their flight, to have to deal with the long wait.
“Some people had to wait for more than two hours to be tested. There were a lot of frustrated people around,” the returning national added, though noting food was eventually ordered for those who had to wait a long time.
Passengers who produced their vaccination certificates and negative PCR test were directed to a seating area, which was filled to capacity, and at some stages people were standing, waiting to get a seat.
“We were sitting in that room waiting to be swabbed and I left several people in there,” another passenger said.
“On the positive side, everyone is very professional, and the system is being followed in an orderly fashion, but the problem is sitting there for such a long time waiting to be swabbed. What led to the frustration was the people constantly returning to ask passengers the same question.”
That woman did note, however, that her COVID-19 test result came back within 24 hours as promised by the Government, and she left her quarantineapproved hotel with no further expense.

  32. Warning to youth
Percentage of seriously ill at Harrison Point still too high, says Forde
    by COLVILLE MOUNSEY colvillemounsey@nationnews.com
HEAD OF THE COVID-19 isolation facilities, Dr Corey Forde, is warning that even though the country’s positivity rating is around two per cent, well below the five per cent benchmark for major spread, the percentage of young people becoming seriously ill with the deadly virus is still too high.
He told the DAILY NATION that more than 50 per cent of the COVID-19 patients requiring urgent care at the primary isolation
facility at Harrison Point, St Lucy, were between the ages of 17 and 40, while 25 per cent in secondary isolation were also within that age group.
“It is true that the numbers are down in the country, but the younger population still presents a challenge . . . . We have nine people in primary of which five are between the ages of 17 and 40, while eight people are in secondary isolation, of which two are also in that younger age bracket,” said Forde.
    Positive news
Fortunately, he added, no one was on a ventilator, though the situation could change at a moment’s notice.
“It is really important that people do
not let their guard down at this point and adhere to all of the protocols because, yes, the numbers are trending well generally as a country, but we would certainly want to see a decrease in the number of young people getting very ill. This is something that we really must pay attention to.”
Minister of Health and Wellness Jeffrey Bostic said he believed some people, especially young people, had become numb to the dangers of COVID-19, with many Barbadians suffering from COVID-19 fatigue.
He explained that while the positivity rate was still trending in the right direction, in recent days it had crept from just over one per cent to two per cent.
The minister said it was fortunate that the cases popping up were localised among a few families but people needed a refresher, through public education, about just how dangerous the disease could be. He said that even within some of the medical institutions under
his ministry people had begun to lower their guard in one or two minor areas.
“We are not just seeing cases springing up out of the blue. People obviously are letting their guard down, especially young people and those living in the same family,” Bostic told the DAILY NATION.
“I had to speak to my people at the various health care institutions because COVID fatigue
is real and we are actually doing a lot of refresher training. When you drive around you are still seeing people gathering and not wearing their masks. Then there are those who have taken the vaccine and therefore believe they can now do as they please, and this is a real worry for us.”
He added: “We have had some cases in health care institutions – and thankfully
in the vast majority of times it is not the medical people – but we have had some sporadic cases among the support staff. It is possible that people may be letting their guard down in areas such as the lunchroom and, as a result, we have had to do some work there.”

  33. The Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) is currently investigating a report of another positive case of coronavirus (COVID-19) in a secondary school.

President of the BUT Pedro Shepherd told Nation News that while he had not yet received official confirmation from the Ministry of Education, he had received reports that a Sixth Form student at the Ellerslie Secondary School in Black Rock, St Michael has tested positive for the virus.

  34. Good news for humanity on the Covid-19 front (but bad news for Big-Pharma and World self-appointed Vaccinator in Chief Bill Gates). A peer reviewed study shows out of patent, anti-parasitic drug Ivermectin is a safe and effective treatment and prophylactic agent against Covid-19.

Immediate Use of Ivermectin Medicine Globally Can End COVID-19 Pandemic: Scientists

A peer-reviewed research has claimed that global ivermectin use can end the COVID-19 pandemic, as the medicine significantly reduces the risk of contracting the deadly respiratory disease when used regularly.

The common antiparasitic ivermectin is being touted as a miracle cure for COVID-19 by doctors and campaigners the world over.

Peer reviewed by medical experts that included three US government senior scientists and published in the American Journal of Therapeutics, the research is the most comprehensive review of the available data taken from clinical, in vitro, animal, and real-world studies.

Led by the Front Line COVID-19 Critical Care Alliance (FLCCC), a group of medical and scientific experts reviewed published peer-reviewed studies, manuscripts, expert meta-analyses, and epidemiological analyses of regions with ivermectin distribution efforts all showing that ivermectin is an effective prophylaxis and treatment for COVID-19.

We did the work that the medical authorities failed to do, (my emphasis /GM) we conducted the most comprehensive review of the available data on ivermectin,” said Pierre Kory, MD, president and chief medical officer of the FLCCC. “We applied the gold standard to qualify the data reviewed before concluding that ivermectin can end this pandemic.”

So isn’t Invermectin not also made by Big Pharma?

And won’t the profits from the sale of Invermectin not also go into the pockets of Big Pharma?

  37. Covid-19 list unease
Barbados disappointed travellers must still quarantine in UK
    by COLVILLE MOUNSEY
    colvillemounsey@nationnews.com
BARBADOS IS STILL on the United Kingdom’s amber list.
That means those travelling from Barbados would be required to quarantine for ten days, along with having a COVID-19 test on day two and on the eighth day.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Jerome Walcott said he was disappointed Barbados had been left off the UK’s green list of countries from which people can enter that jurisdiction without quarantining.
However, he said it was important to respect the sovereign right of a country to make such judgment calls.
As of May 17, the UK, Barbados’ largest tourism source market, has singled out 12 countries that would be allowed entry without quarantining, providing that the traveller has a negative PCR test two days prior.
“Like every country that did not make it to the green list, we are a bit disappointed, but countries make their decisions using their own benchmark, and the British are entitled to do that. It is important
to note that it is still early days into their reopening and only a handful of countries have made it onto that list,” said Walcott, who spoke to the MIDWEEK NATION after the arrival of a second tranche of vaccines via the COVAX facility.
Minister of Tourism Senator Lisa Cummins agreed with Walcott’s view, noting that Barbados’ COVID-19 protocols were adequate to prevent transmission among both inbound and outbound travellers.
    No lax measures
“It is disappointing for us that we are not on the green list because we are confident that the measures that Barbados has put in place are in no way shape or form lax. We have been progressive and our public health officials have been deliberate and in some cases we have been more restrictive than many countries regarding our quarantine requirement as well as the measures that we have put in place to keep the country safe,” Cummins said.
She said this was not likely to have a major impact on Barbados’ effort to woo vaccinated tourists to the island, noting that only moderate inflows of visitors were anticipated at this time.
“It is always going to have some impact, but there are a few things that give us confidence. While we were hoping that the green list would have given us the opening coming from our largest source market, we were always anticipating that we would
not see significant traffic until later in the year. So we were always prepared for recovery a little later in the year,” she said.
Walcott, who is also chairman of the Cabinet Sub-Committee on COVID-19, said the key to ensure that UK travellers to Barbados were eased on such encumbrances on their return home would be to ramp up Barbados’ push for herd immunity. He said the recent approval of the Chinese-made vaccine Sinopharm by the World Health organisation (WHO) was welcome news for Barbados, as Government had already started negotiation for this jab but was only awaiting the final approval. Barbados needs close to 200 000 people fully vaccinated in order to achieve herd immunity but has currently fully vaccinated 34 653 persons while 75 537 have received their first dose.
Sinopharm is the first vaccine developed by a non-Western country to get the World Health Organisation backing. The vaccine has already been given to millions of people in China and elsewhere. The WHO had previously only approved the vaccines made by Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson and Moderna.
“We will continue to do the vaccination and the arrival of the 33 600 vaccines is a further step in this direction. We are continuing to source more vaccines and make the case for them. We have been following the development of vaccines and we had a committee set up in January to look
at vaccines that have been cleared for emergency use by the World Health Organisation,” Walcott said.
He added: “We had indicated at that time that whenever Sinopharm as well as the Sputnik vaccine gained approval, we would be guided by the WHO. Now that Sinopharm has been given approval, it is indeed now one of the vaccines that is available to Barbados. Earlier this year the Chinese government had made a gesture of making a certain number of vaccines available as a gift whenever they got WHO approval and we are looking forward to the acquisition of those.”

Ivermectin costs cents to make. It has been off patent for many years so any company or country with the resources can make it without paying any royalties so it will be zero profitable compared to vaccines pushed to every man, woman and child and new drugs like remdesivir they can rig studies about enough to prove some minimal efficacy. Then they will be saying a vaccine booster shot is required every year and those will not be free. Ivermectin wide use changes COVID into a mild to bad cold.

Every single one of our suspect cases should be receiving ivermectin or hydroxychloroquine+zinc in the early to prevent disease progression.
