A majority of Barbadians continue to analyse US politics with a level of naiveté and hypocrisy that belies our touted level of education. The outcome of the 2024 US Election between candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris cannot be rationally discussed without a good understanding of the US political market.

Donald Trump’s popularity in the U.S. stems from a mix of political, cultural, and personal factors, which have maintained his appeal among many Americans, even years after his presidency:

  • Appeal to Discontent: Trump’s 2016 campaign capitalized on feelings of disillusionment with the political establishment, positioning himself as a “disruptor” who would challenge the status quo. Many supporters feel he understands their frustrations and voices their grievances. His message that is not from the Washington pool of politicians resonates with many who have become cynical and apathetic about politics.
  • Media Savvy: Trump has an undeniable talent for capturing media attention. Whether it’s through traditional news outlets, social media, or his own platform, Trump stays in the public eye. This visibility reinforces his influence and keeps him relevant.
  • Identity Politics: For some, Trump’s appeal is rooted in a vision of American identity that prioritizes traditional values and national pride. His policies on immigration, religion, and “America First” economics resonate with voters who feel left behind or culturally marginalized by globalist trends.

    BREXIT – the American Edition has already provided me with “much mirth”.

    Apart from Nick Fuentes gloating all over social media – “Your body, my choice” and signs popping up at universities declaring that “Women are Property, there are some white working class men whose Trumpamania celebration has fizzled out due to insufficient funds.

    Apparently, a small, Pensylvannian manufacturing company, in an area that voted heavily for Trump, has informed its red hatters that they will not be receiving a Christmas bonus this year as the company prepares to restock at the expected “tariffed” prices. Probably a situation where cash flow does not allow, because we know that those tariffs will be factored into the sales price as well.

    But at least their Orange Jesus has made it possible to say “Merry Christmas” again!

    Unfortunately, they are now realising that “Happy Hol[y]days” would have been just as good.

    Brett Kavanaugh style! Yes, I noticed that a about the movies. A student of mine went to Columbia University. She told me that they were forever trying to get her to party.

    When I was at UWI, Cave Hill, studying was the main activity, with organised parties, concerts etc. at intervals. I saw no bullying, no excessive boozing, no sexual assault. Didn’t hear of any. So, I guess it wasn’t a regular feature.

    There is a happy medium between unfettered capitalism and communism. It’s called social democracy. It is practised in Scandinavian countries whose peoole rate highest on the happiness index every damn year.

    Half a century ago, Daphney Joseph-Hackett decided that I would make a good little chick for her Xmas pantomine based on Animal Farm. Strangely enoygh, I had not yet read the book, but as I cheeped cheeped through the production in my puffy yellow suit, I sure got the message. (Strange that I read War and Peace twenty-five years before Animal Farm. Never saw Animal Farm in the school library.)

    I used to belong to a small political society when I was in sixth form. We educated ourselves in matters political. I realised even at that age that communism as it was then conceptualised would end up like Animal Farm. Human beings do not yet, and maybe never will, have the capacity to be coaxed into communism en masse. The Common Good is not the primary goal of many human beings. Human beings are too self-centred, greedy, competitive and hierarchical in nature. Therefore, authoritarianism would have to be the means by which communism is brought into being and maintained. And the authoritarian leaders would enjoy the sweets of state ownership whether they own it or not. Control is as good as ownership.

    Every system will have its issues as long as human beings have to manage them, even the new vision of communism, ownership by the people through co-operatives.

    I tend to look to the ideal while grounded in reality. No-one could ever reasonably accuse me of ideological extremism.

    The best that we can realistically achieve as long as human beings remain resistant to evolution, is a regulated happy medium. And even then we have to be vigilant in order to maintain the balance.

    There is a movement in the white “evangelical Christian” church and also among right-wingers at large, that openly opposes the right of women to even vote.

    Some say it is because we are incapable of rational thought. Some say the “head of the household” should cast the vote for his family to ensure unity.

    Now…..if men saw their wives as the Bible instructed them, and treated them accordingly, women would live a physically comfortable, though in many cases, a mentally and emotionally frustrating life.

    But we KNOW that this is not what happens. When women have no power they are battered and abused without any recourse.

    The idea that women cannot think rationally, do not have the capacity for leadership and should therefore sit back and let men do the thinking, talking and leading “according to the Bible”, is dangerous to our health and even to our lives.

    I have no granddaughter as yet, but I have a god-daughter, two nieces, cousins, and a whole lot of young women who I spent years loving as a youth minister without title. I love them still. These are my children. Even their parents referred to them thusly.

    I will not stand idly by and allow their lives to be endangered by a resurgence of backward Biblical fundamentalism in this country!

    Today, across the United States of America, women were being mocked. “Your body, my choice!” “Women are property!”

    This from Andrew Tate, a “Moslem”, accused rapist and sex trafficker –

    “I saw a woman today crossing the road. I didn’t even slow down. Right of way? You have no rights! You requested a president who isn’t a rapist? REQUEST DENIED!”

    Andren Tate has tens of millions of followers worldwide, many in the US and the UK. He “teaches” young men how to be “real men”. It is such a problem that the British government is thinking how to counteract its overt manifestions in their schools. This is a movement!

    I wonder if this post by Tate can be used as evidence in his upcoming trial. Maybe his “drunken” exuberance overTrump’s win caused a fatal error.

    These are the type of people who feel empowered since election day in America!

    This is the slippery slope that starts off with religious fundamentalism. Women are inferior beings, incapable of making decisions. Therefore men must make all their decisions for them. We know how that turns out.

    There is one here who remarks to me that he does not argue with “women, children, or…….”

    I have the distinct impression that he sees no difference between the three.

    Today, across America, black women got a double dose. They are inferior because they are women. And they are inferior because they are black.

    Gimmee a break nuh!!! We have had nuff, nuff rain in October, and so far in November too, so sometimes a dryer gets pulled into service. Yes I fold socks. I’ve never ironed underwear, but I still iron my 100% cotton sheets because they feel and look so nice when ironed. When my kids were little and stayed with my mother during vacation time times, my mother ordered me to iron their t-shirts, because she didn’t want her grandchildren walking ’bout looking like they just come out de “rough dry bundle”. So I obeyed. I can do obedience if the order comes from a legitimate authority, and mothers are the ultimate legitimate authority.

    I can’t account for your odd socks, but as a ZR woman I have lost plenty of umbrellas, and never yet found one. By any chance are my lost umbrellas at you?

    In 2004/5 I was lecturing at UWI sharing the knowledge I had acquired with young Barbadian students.

    Some went on to postgraduate studies in the UK.

    When the decision was taken to replace me as instructed, UWI had to hire someone from India, fly him and his family all the way over here, provide housing and God knows whatever else because UWI could find no one locally or regionally with my skills.

    NOT ME. But the National Review which called Trump University A MASSIVE SCAM.

Back in the early 2000’s a person in New York City could have earned a 2 year associate degree and paid about 7 to 8 thousand tuition for the 2 years, and earned credits which were transferrable to universities in New York and other states, in case they wanted to earn a bachelor’s. Trump U was charging up to $35,000 for nothing fake degrees.

    No wonder a leading conservative magazine called it out as “a massive scam.”

    But does Trump respect and honor the USA Constitution?

  49. Please note that the USA Constitution does NOT mention God, Jesus, Jehovah, Mohammed, Abraham, Judaism, Christianity, Wiccan, Islam, Hinduism, Rastafarianism, the Bible, the Koran, the Talmud, the Vedas nor nothing so.

    People in the USA as in Barbados, as in most democracies are free to read any holy book, and they are free not to read any of them. The choice is theirs as it should be. They are also free to read any unholy book.

    From its founding the USA has been and is an explicitly secular state. Their Constitution protects their right to practice any religion or none.

    I’ve read the USA Constitution many, many times.

  50. The United States Constitution does not explicitly mention God or the divine, but the Declaration of Independence does acknowledge a Creator as the source of unalienable rights. The Declaration of Independence states, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights”.

    What do you think self-evident means?

    I think it means, that the word Creator, with a Capital C, means God and it is self-evident to anyone, even a dummy.

    So, the rights of life liberty and the pursuit of happiness are endowed in mankind by God, their Creator.

    The First Amendment of the Constitution also clarifies that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion”.

    “However, the constitutions of all 50 states do mention God or the divine at least once. These references often use the terms “God the Almighty” or the “Supreme Ruler of the Universe”.”

    The Constitution guarantees the rights in the Declaration and the Bill of rights specifies them.

    You can also google it if it is not self-evident to yourself.

    “The Declaration of Independence was written in 1776. It was a list of grievances against the king of England intended to justify separation from British rule. The Constitution was written and signed in 1787.”
