A majority of Barbadians continue to analyse US politics with a level of naiveté and hypocrisy that belies our touted level of education. The outcome of the 2024 US Election between candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris cannot be rationally discussed without a good understanding of the US political market.

Donald Trump’s popularity in the U.S. stems from a mix of political, cultural, and personal factors, which have maintained his appeal among many Americans, even years after his presidency:

  • Appeal to Discontent: Trump’s 2016 campaign capitalized on feelings of disillusionment with the political establishment, positioning himself as a “disruptor” who would challenge the status quo. Many supporters feel he understands their frustrations and voices their grievances. His message that is not from the Washington pool of politicians resonates with many who have become cynical and apathetic about politics.
  • Media Savvy: Trump has an undeniable talent for capturing media attention. Whether it’s through traditional news outlets, social media, or his own platform, Trump stays in the public eye. This visibility reinforces his influence and keeps him relevant.
  • Identity Politics: For some, Trump’s appeal is rooted in a vision of American identity that prioritizes traditional values and national pride. His policies on immigration, religion, and “America First” economics resonate with voters who feel left behind or culturally marginalized by globalist trends.
  • Polarization and Loyalty: The polarized nature of U.S. politics has created strong loyalty among Trump supporters, who often view attacks on him as attacks on themselves. This “us versus them” mentality deepens support and makes criticism of Trump seem like partisan attacks.
  • Mistrust of Mainstream Media and Government: Trump’s constant messaging about “fake news” and a “deep state” has cultivated a mistrust of traditional news sources and government agencies among his base. This distrust reinforces their loyalty, as they see Trump as an outsider combating a biased system.
  • Policy Achievements: Some supporters genuinely approve of Trump’s policy actions, such as tax cuts, deregulation, criminal justice reform, and his foreign policy moves. They feel these initiatives benefited the economy and American interests globally.

Trump’s popularity is what it is because he’s seen as more than just a political figure to his supporters; he’s a symbol of resistance, a voice for overlooked Americans, and a controversial but charismatic leader who keeps them engaged. One should not view politics anywhere through an emotional lens.

  1. T-2 and counting!!

  2. No winner
    Ttump gonna contest the results if the results are not in his self interest
    This narcissistic political gangsta still holds a grudge against a democratic process that said he was the loser of the last election
    Hence he and his lawyers would hold the electorate in a gangsta style position taking the results across the land to the supreme court with a pervasive mind set that he was the rightful winner past and now present

  3. Yawn!!
    Even worse than Hobson’s choice.

    The winner is Mother Karma.
    The USA is guranteed to get EXACTLY the ‘leader’ that they deserve.

    LOL
    If they only knew what is in store.., not even the idiot Trump would offer himself.

    Who ever leads
    The country is self sufficient enough to stand on its own two feet a country more than others which have undergone more turbulence from its beginnings to present time
    Trump intervention at this time would not only be a devastation but a crucial political point and time of turning back the hands of time back to an era of social discontentment and injustice
    Yes the Lord does moves in mysterious ways but His eyes are open to injustices and unjustifiable political hypocrites like Trump who speaks of making America great again while he sells the word of God for self gain

  5. The rise of Trump and what he represents, a man who is more likely to advance an already polarized nation is the measuring stick but what are the alternatives? Both candidates in this blogmaster’s opinion are puppets of those orchestrating in the shadows anyway.

    So what’s new !the people still have to make a choice
    The democractic process must stay strong and frevent in the eyes of the world come election day

  7. Let me add that I like this article. If there is any weakness, it is that it just focuses on Trump, but the writer is not writing for the American public.

    I fully agree with his opening paragraph. I heard some Bajan as analyses that are more mad than they are comical. From what I heard, if Barbados was a state of the US, it would note be a close state… Trumps wins by a mile.

  8. “…Both candidates in this blogmaster’s opinion are puppets of those orchestrating in the shadows anyway.”
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Absolutely 100% right!
    …and it does NOT just apply to those two….
    The ACTUAL battle is not against flesh and blood BBs, BUT against dark shadows (evil forces in high (spiritual) places…
    The challenge therefore, is in cutting those orchestrating strings…
    Obviously, only a superior spiritual power is capable of severing these strings that bind us to brassbowlery…
    So, as we have conclusively demonstrated here on BU, the best of basic common sense and human logic – even from the likes of NO, Green Monkey and Pacha, have been USELESS in freeing us from our headlong rush into chaos…
    It is almost funny ..listening to the ‘logical’ reasons why the USA election race SHOULD be a slam dunk … versus the actual REALITY of the impact of spiritual puppetry…
    It reminds one of the situation in a little place called Brassbados….
    What a time to be alive…
    What an era of transformation..
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Grasshopper, you have got it!!
    Well over two thirds of the American people say the country is on the wrong path.
    The number is big enough and constant enough over time not to dismiss as just another monkey poll.
    So, if the American people are dissatisfied with the stewardship of Harris and Biden, what is the most likely outcome in this two-horse race?
    If the number is right, there can only be one horse on which to focus.
    Even the Muslim community now has come out in support of Trump in Michigan.
    If these simple facts are correct, the pollsters are mad wrong.
    This election is not going to be any cliff hanger, it is not even going to be close.
    It will be over in a flash.
    If the other horse wins, then for sure something is wrong, or the facts were never right and the poll was just for monkeys.
  10. Perhaps, just perhaps John you may get the opportunity to realize that a Trump win will not solve the problem.
  11. … but a Harris win will create several others!!
    The lesser of two weevils.
    David, your points are well made generally re Trump, but of course there are other angles of divergence. And of course you all this is simply a snap-shot of this most divisive of candidates, not the election candidates writ large.
    If I may also speak to some other comments, tho…. At various points in US recent political history the so called “two thirds of the American people [perceived] the country [being] on the wrong path”. So let’s get our heads on the right track here.
    Americans swung to Ronald Reagan with that frame of mind and in a very different construct they felt the same and swung to Barack Obama. Donald Trump does NOT lead any new charge in the political discourse that creates a ‘better’ philosophy which moves that momentum forward in any refreshing way. NO.
    So to your analysis YES, “The rise of Trump […] represents, a man who is [advancing] an already polarized nation”. He has mined very well the long standing concerns of unchecked immigration, global militarization, white disenfranchisement and the multicultural (read Islamic) take-over of Anglo-Saxon ‘purity’.
    It is a truism, David, that “Both candidates [ …] are puppets of those orchestrating in the shadows”. THAT is the raison d’être of politics.
    *** “His message that is not from the Washington pool of politicians resonates with many who have become cynical and apathetic about politics.”
    At its core, this is a sweet narrative. Yes, many are cynical about politics but for my entire life-time, politicians in Washington and here in Bridgetown or London have always tailored their message to suit and assuage the electorate. So it’s not, IMHO what that oft-repeated narrative says; rather he and others like him no longer make sotto-voce mouthings … they shout everything “IN YOUR FACE”.
    *** “Trump stays in the public eye. This visibility reinforces his influence and keeps him relevant.”
    True dat. Again he has SHAPED this phenomenon better than many (all before him, really) as he rode it to the WH. There are many others -influencers, let’s create a new word 🙂 – who also outstandingly life this mantra that ALL publicity is good publicity (sex tapes, outlandish racist BS, libeling obvious truths).
    It has made many multi-millionaires. Some have also rode that to US congress and other places of importance and surely others will likely ride it to the US highest office and offices here too.
    *** “His policies on immigration, religion, and “America First” economics resonate with voters who feel left behind or culturally marginalized by globalist trends.”
    Isn’t it outrageously RIDICULOUS that those words actually are real and true! That this champion for the marginalized is the SAME man who has been a long-time millionaire then billionaire who has always scoffed and looked side-ways at the marginalized man and boasted about stiffing said ‘left behind’ folks by not paying contractors who did work for him.
    What an odd, non-intuitive concept!
    *** “The polarized nature of U.S. politics has created strong loyalty among […] and makes criticism of Trump seem like partisan attacks.”
    Again true, sir. But again it’s the nature of the best. He is the voice of the so called alt-right faction of the US and absolutely many of them are vile, reprehensible people who cloak themselves in all guises of purity. So fah sure attacks are on THEM too for their world-views. No way around that!
    *** “Trump’s constant messaging about “fake news” and a “deep state” has cultivated a mistrust of traditional news sources […] reinforces their loyalty, as they see Trump as an outsider combating a biased system.”
    This is the most perfect of fascist orthodoxy. Shout free-speech … but only for YOUR trusted media outlets. People READ and LISTEN to what they BELIEVE … in simple terms it’s called cult-mentality. Whether right or left that’s absurd but for sure a large number on those now identifying as Republicans fall regrettably into that.
    Let’s clearly note that the ONLY traditional media heavily SANCTIONED for “FAKE NEWS” in the courts have been those which support this candidate. NO OTHERS had to pay fines for LYING. None were found libelous on the Russia matter, for example!
    That says it perfectly. His is a sham remark and his people accept it simply because they want to… they still view that sanctioned ‘fake news’ station twice and three times more that all other media.
    *** “Some [MOST] supporters genuinely approve of Trump’s policy actions, such as tax cuts, deregulation, criminal justice reform, and his foreign policy moves. They feel these initiatives benefited the economy and American interests globally.
    Again another incongruous but true statement. The US has been the GREATEST benefactor of previous foreign policy moves.. Back to Reagan … their economy moved well with arms sales (legally and illegally) and of course as the ‘wall’ fell. Over the many years before and since it has always benefitted. So it’s RICH (pun and all) for Republicans to now adopt a stance that globalization is a bad thing … This is just another sham narrative that runs on the fuel of the bad things of multiculturism.
    This man himself makes millions from external sources … is this NOT the same man that made Trump clothing (years ago) and even now OUTSIDE the US for cheaper costs. He is a sham. And so is the narrative.
    *** “Trump’s popularity is what it is because […] One should not view politics anywhere through an emotional lens.”
    Serious analysts NEVER do. But that said, one can also never detangle emotion from politics in the voting square. Politicians ALWAYS appeal to our emotions.
    Onwards … may the best woman win!
  13. de pedantic Dribbler Avatar
    de pedantic Dribbler
    David, as usual and to belabor the point … if we say it in Bridgetown or Ottawa or in Washington it is vile and fascist authoritarian ‘speak’ to suggest: “If the other horse wins, then for sure something is wrong, or the facts were never right and the poll was just for monkeys.”
    This is absurd. All the practical polls have given this as close or toss-up race… yet the race could be an electoral college BLOWOUT.
    And that is based on very simple and practical polling facts in the battleground states. In short, if those toss-up states go 3-1 for one candidate then she could win 390 or 312 electoral votes … just so.
    So then these insurrectionists will cry steal .. when it was simply always likely to happen DESPITE the otherwise close race.
    It’s savvy people that fuel this divisive BS and create distrust … so very sad !
  14. Look on the bright side.
    Trump if he wins gets 4 years.
    His replacement for the following 8 years will probably be JD Vance who has none of the flaws of Trump that seem to send people crazy.
    People should be really happy.
  15. @Dee Word
    Thanks for your prolix but it is all about Tuesday and the reality of the outcome.
  16. Reagan won 49 states out of 50!!!
    Do you think Trump could beat that record?
    With more than 2/3 voters feeling the country is not going the right way anything is possible.
  17. This article is all about Trump not Kamla which infers the author is leaning towards a Trump win. Trump lost in 2020 and there is nothing to suggest it will be any different this time around in 2024. Kamla has done nothing wrong and is the better candidate with a professional mindset. If Trump wins it confirms USA is fucking crazy so fuck ’em all.
  18. The left got the angles covered …. for the moment.
    David, yes absolutely correct re “not fit for purpose”. Alas, her gender appears to trump his enigmatic persona for many!!
    And @Northern particularly the Muslim vote.
    The incredulity that Muslims collectively or otherwise would support this guy over the war efforts re better expectations is beyond comprehension OTHER than her gender!
    One of the Dem so called squad members, a Muslim herself has NOT endorsed Harris for reasons of war effort.
    So YEAH the Republican will be better. Steupse. The folly of politics.
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Agree, I could not understand it at first blush.
    Then I thought about it some more.
    It may be that it has nothing to do with Israel and is all to do with the Democrats embrace of the LBGTQ++ movement and abortion.
    That’s the best explanation I can come up with.
    They agree with him on these simple things so supporting him is natural.
    Israel is far away, and they want to make a home in America.
    There have been several reports on the Muslim vote in Michigan, and it’s about Israel.
    That doesn’t mean the rank and file will follow those Muslims who deem themselves to be “leaders”. Or they may. We’ll find out.
    Other members of BNs Likuid party are clearly in favour of Trump. It has less to do with current hostilities, rather than the post war carve up of Gaza and the West Bank.
    He did not LOSE 2020 he stepped back, still holding his title to allow what you will soon come to know as the “Great Awakening” for the people of America and the world to see the sheer wickedness and lies of the establishment, the Deep State and the Legacy News.
    Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for their’s is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
    Looks like Trump is headed for even greater rewards.
    Trump did NOT nearly GIVE up his life for his country. A couple of people tried to TAKE it from him. Big, big, big difference.
    If he wanted to give up his life for country, he would not have let real or imagined bone spurs prevent him from fighting for his country.
    My mother had real-real bone spurs and went to work every day for decades, and her job involved miles of walking and standing every day.
    I must admit that I haven’t read my Bible lately, but the last time I did I swear that it got something in there along the lines of “thou shall not commit adultery?”
    but he is a bad loser in denial of truth and facts
    and wouldn’t admit he lost until September 2024
    Trump acknowledges losing the 2020 election ‘by a whisker’
    The 2020 Electoral College map
    In 2020, Mr. Biden won 81,284,666 votes nationwide, compared to Trump’s 74,224,319.
    But the presidency is won in the Electoral College, not the popular vote. Mr. Biden bested Trump by that measure, too, winning 306 electoral votes to Trump’s 232. A majority in the Electoral College — 270 votes — is needed to win the White House.
  46. @BAJAN IN EXILE November 3, 2024 at 9:35 pm “…who has given up everything nearly his life for the LOVE of his country. Anyone in BB willing to do that?”
    Well if we look at it your way a few dozen young MEN give up their life for love of BB every year. You may want to call them heroes and patriots, but most people see them as unruly young men who have brought themselves to long prison terms, while bringing their parents to shame.
  47. We have said before that Trump is most probably the victor in this petite bourgeoisie democratic, political theatrical production.
    We also pondered that the Deep State may very well rig this American election, like it has done many times before, at home and abroad.
    However, and based on a broad reading of voter sentiments, a third possibility has emerged which is consistent with national trajectories.
    Civil war!
    Firstly, recent polling is suggesting a dead heat.
    Secondly, the country is so divided that significant percentages of both Democrats and Republicans are saying that if the other side wins that fowl play would have been causal. Democrats 28 percent. Republicans 38 percent.
    These two data points , and there are others, support an estimate for events more dangerous than Jan 06 as it enters the winner’s circle.
  48. A deeper meditation of the “deep state”
    Trump the XPotUS talks about a deep state to his fan boys and conspiracy theorists.
    But, what is this deep state that operates above the PotUS / CiC.
    We all know USA cheat in elections abroad have kill lists for foreigners and organise insurrections abroad and don’t do International Courts or Human Rights.
    But what jurisdiction or extra legal jurisdiction does the deep state have to do any of the above misdeeds at home as they got laws that CIA and agencies cannot kill US civilians inside US borders.
    Perhaps the answers to these questions will be revealed on the television in the next episode.
    Special Ops: Lioness is inspired by a real US Task Force, but the show has built a fictional storyline around it. The real Team Lioness was established by the military by enlisting only women. The team’s purpose was to solve a problem US soldiers faced during the war on terror in Iraq and Afghanistan.
    I think the Trump story will finally end tomorrow.
  49. You can only have a Civil War if there are two equal parties.
    The Democrats cannot raise an army from its members.
    Many are blue haired geeks who cannot contemplate the possibility of shedding their own blood.
    The Republicans have no problem, a few rednecks would rout any army the Democrats might raise.
    Perhaps that’s why they threw open the borders to bring in some mercenaries from around the world to fight on their behalf.
