A majority of Barbadians continue to analyse US politics with a level of naiveté and hypocrisy that belies our touted level of education. The outcome of the 2024 US Election between candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris cannot be rationally discussed without a good understanding of the US political market.

Donald Trump’s popularity in the U.S. stems from a mix of political, cultural, and personal factors, which have maintained his appeal among many Americans, even years after his presidency:

  • Appeal to Discontent: Trump’s 2016 campaign capitalized on feelings of disillusionment with the political establishment, positioning himself as a “disruptor” who would challenge the status quo. Many supporters feel he understands their frustrations and voices their grievances. His message that is not from the Washington pool of politicians resonates with many who have become cynical and apathetic about politics.
  • Media Savvy: Trump has an undeniable talent for capturing media attention. Whether it’s through traditional news outlets, social media, or his own platform, Trump stays in the public eye. This visibility reinforces his influence and keeps him relevant.
  • Identity Politics: For some, Trump’s appeal is rooted in a vision of American identity that prioritizes traditional values and national pride. His policies on immigration, religion, and “America First” economics resonate with voters who feel left behind or culturally marginalized by globalist trends.
  • Polarization and Loyalty: The polarized nature of U.S. politics has created strong loyalty among Trump supporters, who often view attacks on him as attacks on themselves. This “us versus them” mentality deepens support and makes criticism of Trump seem like partisan attacks.
  • Mistrust of Mainstream Media and Government: Trump’s constant messaging about “fake news” and a “deep state” has cultivated a mistrust of traditional news sources and government agencies among his base. This distrust reinforces their loyalty, as they see Trump as an outsider combating a biased system.
  • Policy Achievements: Some supporters genuinely approve of Trump’s policy actions, such as tax cuts, deregulation, criminal justice reform, and his foreign policy moves. They feel these initiatives benefited the economy and American interests globally.

Trump’s popularity is what it is because he’s seen as more than just a political figure to his supporters; he’s a symbol of resistance, a voice for overlooked Americans, and a controversial but charismatic leader who keeps them engaged. One should not view politics anywhere through an emotional lens.

  6. I don’t need to collect anything from it, it was an academic exercise in tracking down a criminal using the internet and convincing a jury of my point of view.

You know how good that makes me feel?

  14. People and media are looking at this result wrong.
It is an indictment of the American people in the same way Brexit was an indictment of the British. Racist populism at the gross level is reflected at the subtle level.

  15. Banana with duct tape

“BANANA WITH duct tape”, going, gone. Sold for $6.2 million!

Normally, when a long-standing economic system is experiencing decay, the earliest signs are seen in small acts of moral obscenity, in the callous flaunting of the wealthy and in the ruling classes resorting to “carelessness”, seen in their pompous strutting with an air of invincibility.

In the moment when Donald Trump’s supporters were posting their online insults, openly wallowing in their expected Trump tax break windfall, and mocking women with their “your body, my choice” gloat, the world was treated to perhaps the most telling sign of capitalism’s moral decay: a piece of “art” – a yellow banana stuck with a strip of duct tape to a white wall.

It was sold at Sotheby Auction House in New York for US$6.2 million. The “work” was ironically named Comedian, and it was bought by Justin Sun, a 34-year-old crypto-investor.

Despite the attempt of the world bourgeois Press to explain away this apology for art by describing the creator as being “amongst contemporary art’s most brilliant provocateurs”, they cannot deny the symbolism of what this means for the state of capitalism, its moral decay, and its inability to justify itself “at the bar of reason”. It takes a certain kind of immunisation from human misery when a duct-taped banana can be purchased for US$6 million when humans die of hunger, young people are denied university education, and easily available health care.

It is clear that global capitalism has entered a new phase. The world bourgeoisie is no longer content to hide in the shadows, to stay in the background, to apologise for its wealth, to pretend to be a “class for all”, and to allow the “middle class” to manage the political world. Instead, a new generation of “callous bourgeois” has emerged.

Not content with the immense profits generated from their private investments, they are now moving to a new stage of direct political control where they can use state power towards the singular end of pursuing their interests without any of the “frustrating” democratic impediments of a government for all the people. Without shame, they assembled at Mar-a-Lago and lapped up the promise that they would get a President who would make them “as rich as hell”. Already, the world’s richest men are now rubbing their hands in glee at the prospect of being given the right to reshape the machinery of the US government in their own image, as they are now given picks on Trump’s incoming Cabinet.

Not surprisingly, Justin Sun – the banana and duct tape buyer (he promises to eat the banana) has invested US$30 million in Trump’s new crypto-currency.

An obscene, over-confident, self-aware, global capitalist oligarchy is now taking shape. Could this be the last bright glow, before the fire exhausts itself?

  16. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/dec/05/bahamas-trump-deportation-migrants
Bahamas rejects Trump proposal to take in deported migrants

The Bahamas has rejected a proposal from the incoming Trump administration to take in deported people, as the president-elect seeks to follow up on pledges to slash immigration.

Donald Trump’s team has drawn up a list of countries to which it wants to deport migrants when their home countries refuse to accept them, according to NBC News.

But the Bahamas, an island nation in the Atlantic Ocean, said it had “reviewed and firmly rejected” the plan.

Prime Minister Philip Davis’s office said his government had received a proposal from the Trump transition team “to accept deportation flights of migrants from other countries”.

Other countries that Trump is considering include TURKS and CAICOS, PANAMA, and GRENADA, sources told NBC.

  17. Since President-elect Trump is like me an Anglican/Episcopalian, let me guide him and his advisers to what the Bible says about migrants:

“And if a stranger sojurn with thee in your land, ye shall not vex him. But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.”
    Leviticus 19:33-34

  18. If a country as large and as rich as the USA cannot host those people who have chosen to go there, how are small, poor countries like the Bahamas, and Grenada and Panama too expected to be able to do so?

  19. The Guardian has reported that “A British plan to deport its asylum seekers to Rwanda was dropped earlier this year when the Labour party took power under Keir Starmer after ousting the Conservatives.”

  27. Trump’s Fake News: ‘When I said that THE CRIMINALS COMING IN ARE FAR WORSE THAN THE CRIMINALS WE HAVE IN OUR COUNTRY, that statement was constantly refuted by Democrats and the Fake News Media, but it turned out to be true,’ Trump said after Fox News revealed the truck used in the attack had recently crossed the border.

The Truth: Shamsud Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old US CITIZEN BORN IN TEXAS…He was shot and killed in a shootout with police. Jabbar reportedly SERVED TIME IN THE USA ARMY.

  28. So nope.
    Not an immigrant.
    One of America’s own.
    From a very red state.
    Trained by the USA military.
Is Trump going to apologize for saying THE CRIMINALS COMING IN ARE FAR WORSE THAN THE CRIMINALS WE HAVE IN OUR COUNTRY.

  30. Money makes racist nationalist movements in politics today

    The Walk-in
Neo-Nazis like Tommy Robinson are funded by the likes of Elon Musk and Israel
Elon Musk’s calls for Tommy Robinson release anger Labour MPs

  31. There are trigger points for racist nationalists from seemingly innocuous statements and events whom are easily stirred up with the inner racist demons waking up in more of them. I remember when a Labour MP Shirley Williams was talking about merits of integration and said she looked forward to seeing a coloured PM one day, which was a call to arms for the National Front who began distributing leaflets about it to youths outside school gates. An integrated Europe was also a trigger point for racists. Trump, Farage and Johnson all got their knickers twisted over the first black President of US, which gave birth to white right wing extremists / terrorists on the internet which went mainstream and grew into Brexit and Trump terms 1 and 2 and funding of white extremism worldwide.
