Your message to the BLOGMASTER was sent

A majority of Barbadians continue to analyse US politics with a level of naiveté and hypocrisy that belies our touted level of education. The outcome of the 2024 US Election between candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris cannot be rationally discussed without a good understanding of the US political market.

Donald Trump’s popularity in the U.S. stems from a mix of political, cultural, and personal factors, which have maintained his appeal among many Americans, even years after his presidency:

  • Appeal to Discontent: Trump’s 2016 campaign capitalized on feelings of disillusionment with the political establishment, positioning himself as a “disruptor” who would challenge the status quo. Many supporters feel he understands their frustrations and voices their grievances. His message that is not from the Washington pool of politicians resonates with many who have become cynical and apathetic about politics.
  • Media Savvy: Trump has an undeniable talent for capturing media attention. Whether it’s through traditional news outlets, social media, or his own platform, Trump stays in the public eye. This visibility reinforces his influence and keeps him relevant.
  • Identity Politics: For some, Trump’s appeal is rooted in a vision of American identity that prioritizes traditional values and national pride. His policies on immigration, religion, and “America First” economics resonate with voters who feel left behind or culturally marginalized by globalist trends.
  • Polarization and Loyalty: The polarized nature of U.S. politics has created strong loyalty among Trump supporters, who often view attacks on him as attacks on themselves. This “us versus them” mentality deepens support and makes criticism of Trump seem like partisan attacks.
  • Mistrust of Mainstream Media and Government: Trump’s constant messaging about “fake news” and a “deep state” has cultivated a mistrust of traditional news sources and government agencies among his base. This distrust reinforces their loyalty, as they see Trump as an outsider combating a biased system.
  • Policy Achievements: Some supporters genuinely approve of Trump’s policy actions, such as tax cuts, deregulation, criminal justice reform, and his foreign policy moves. They feel these initiatives benefited the economy and American interests globally.

Trump’s popularity is what it is because he’s seen as more than just a political figure to his supporters; he’s a symbol of resistance, a voice for overlooked Americans, and a controversial but charismatic leader who keeps them engaged. One should not view politics anywhere through an emotional lens.

    You just do not get it do you.

    Eleven years after the Declaration of Independence which establishes the reason for (The WHY) the establishment of the United States of America as an independent nation the signers of the Declaration and others set their minds to documenting how the new nation (the HOW) was to be governed (Constitution) and what were the rights of each citizen (Bill of Rights).

    The new Nation was comprised of 13 Colonies which became the 13 founding states.

    Common sense would dictate that religious beliefs in each state would vary and if a new nation was to be emerge out of the merging of the states, the troubling issue of religion would have to be dealt with. 

    Anyone who wanted now to discuss intelligently this issue today must look at the religious origins of each of the 13 states or be labeled as a complete waste of time.

    Don’t mind, I will try to explain.

    The five New England states started in varying degrees of puritanism, then the more progressive saw the rise of Quakerism/Evangelical Christianity, antinomianism etc.

    New York started Dutch so there was the Dutch REFORMED Church, Huguenots and other non conformist sects.

    The Southern states started Church of England and other non conformist sects with a small population of the Muslim faith and other religions.

    Maryland started Roman Catholic.

    Pennsylvania was Quaker, Mennonite, Amish etc.

    … and then there had been the Great Awakening when Evangelical Christianity swept through the colonies.

    There was only one way to address the multiplicity of religions and get agreement, make it a non-issue.

    That’s why there is no mention of the terms you are so concerned about.

    … and also why the Declaration of Independence begins with the statement “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

    The Declaration was made by ALL colonies long before they figured out how to govern the United States of America and reduced the principles to writing in the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

    The United States of America could have lost the war and still be colonies of Great Britain, but that did not happen.

    God had other ideas for it.

    After the January 6, 2020 attack on the United States Capitol, most, including many Republicans, believed Donald Trump was dead politically. He proved everyone wrong.

    The President-elect’s landslide victory proved that his wasn’t an aberration or a fluke eight years ago. His resurrection establishes him as a transformational force reshaping America in his image.

    Following post-election media headlines like: ‘Today is a day of despair for America. We are plunged into an anticipatory grief’, I felt compelled pastorally to write to those grieving the results of the US presidential election and feeling that democracy in American is dead. That is not the case.

    Having experienced first-hand and survived the initial Trump presidency, I know that others can do it a second time. However, concerns are legitimate.

    Criminal

    For the first time in their history, Americans have elected a twiceimpeached, convicted criminal as president. They restored power to a leader who tried to overturn the previous election, called for the “termination” of the Constitution, aspires to be a “dictator on Day 1” and vowed to exact “retribution” against his adversaries.

    Alongside Trump’s victory, the America electoral system was a clear winner. We can anticipate a peaceful and orderly transfer of power. In his first speech to the nation after Harris’ loss, President Biden stated: “You can’t love your country only when you win. You can’t love your neighbour only when you agree.” He underscored “Vox Populi, Vox Dei”, the voice of the people is the voice of God.

    It is now for citizens and those responsible for the checks and balances of power to reinforce the guardrails of democracy.

    Not discounting Trump’s intuitive political skills, not all credit is his. In a banner year for elections, nearly half of the world’s population went to the polls in 2024, nearly every party that was the incumbent at the time that post-COVID-19 inflation impacted has lost. With the vast majority of Americans holding that the country was on the “wrong track”, as the incumbent, vice-president Kamala Harris had a difficult route to victory.

    In 1992, James Carville, Bill Clinton’s campaign strategist, said US presidential elections are all about “the economy, stupid”. But it wasn’t just the economy, it was inflation and immigration.

    Harris, as the Democratic candidate, pivoted to her professional and ideological strengths, including abortion rights, democratic integrity, prosecuting Trump’s instability and divisiveness, and the US postpandemic economic recovery. But they didn’t connect. The significant increases in housing, fuel and food prices overshadowed the strong stock and job markets. According to MSNBC, 75 per cent of Americans experienced moderate or severe inflation-related hardship.

    Much of Harris’ loss stemmed from a campaign unable to overcome deep-seated concerns working class voters held about the economy and high prices. The Trump campaign’s emphasis on jobs, lower taxes and reducing the cost of food, gas and housing prices appealed to this demographic. NBC reported that Trump outpolled Harris among those earning $100 000 or less. The loss underscores a profound shift in American politics, as blue-collar voters over the past decade have turned increasingly Republican – a trend Trump has accelerated.

    Fundraising record

    Notwithstanding, with only 107 days to campaign, and considering her previous presidential bid, Harris did exceptionally well. A race that the Democrats were set to lose was transformed. Harris became the first Black/Asian woman to top a major party ticket, energised her party, broke fundraising records – raising US$1 billion in less than three months – and crushed Trump in the debate.

    However, the Harris-backed coalition of Blacks, women, young, independents and “Never Trump” Republicans didn’t materialise. In the end, many of these key demographics, as if complying with Nikki Haley’s edict to “take the emotion out” and “elect Trump”, did just that. While there were local issues – Hurricane Helene in North Carolina, Gaza/Palestine in Michigan, and the conflating of Puerto Rico with the wider Latino community – Harris generally underperformed. Women voted for her by smaller margins. The majority of white women voted for Trump. She also suffered significant losses among Latinos and young voters.

    By obliterating the “Blue Wall”, and winning the popular vote, the first time for a Republican in 20 years, Trump demonstrated that he did not merely rely on his 2016 base but built new political alliances, and in so doing redrew the American political map.

    The most symbolic indicator of where things are in the US was via a Trump supporter with the message: “Trump yesterday, today and forever”. Resonating with Hebrews 13:8, and following the assassination attempt, the Trump campaign encompassed a messianic dimension. But this is no mere cult, for Trumpism is now firmly cemented in American political culture. Donald Trump is no longer an aberration; he is normative.

    For those seeking the solace of a counter-narrative, listen again to vicepresident Harris’ concession speech: “This is not a time to throw up our hands. This is a time to roll up our sleeves. This is a time to organise, to mobilise and to stay engaged for the sake of freedom and justice, and the future that we all know we can build together.”

    May they hold with one hand to the Democratic mantra, “Keep Hope Alive”, and the nation’s motto with the other: “In God We Trust”.

    The American people spoke.

    They rejected the left-wing atheist democrats.

    Trump smoked Harris.

    Nevada and Arizona are now declared for Trump.

    He has now swept the swing states in a landslide.

    Next time around the battleground states may well be New York, New Jersey and California.

    His gains in these were phenomenal.

    Overall, Trump got slightly less votes than he did in 2020.

    Harris was down by over 10 million compared with Biden in 2020.

    Does that mean the 10 million decided to sit out the election or more logically they never existed and were inserted to get Biden over the line.

    What a shitty decision to get Biden elected, it backfired spectacularly.

    Trump’s job is now to Make America Great Again.

    Will the Democrats in Congress get in line and support improving their country’s lot or will they behave as they did as wicked, petulant little children?

    We will see.

    You clearly know more about Universities/Colleges than I do.
    “Out of the 5,300 institutions in the USA, there are 1,626 public colleges, 1,687 private nonprofit schools, and 985 for-profit schools”
    Anyways when I speak to gouging, I refer to the many creative financial models for covering educational costs, which are closer to hire purchase (higher?) than loans. Sadly, students end up with some of these regardless of whether the educational institution is public, private non or for profit.
    It also refers to those educational institutions which don’t educate.

Given all the black white chatter on this blog, it is noted that two white men, both eligible to play for Barbados and England, last evening while representing England, bladed the WI opposition with an unbeaten century and half century to win the match. They follow in the footsteps of Jofra Archer, albeit years before Sir Gordon Greenidge had a similar nation choice, as have others.
    The next competition (marketing) will be those who could play for WI but do not, VS the WI.

    On Jan. 26, 2021, President Joe Biden signed four executive orders designed to address racial equity in the United States. With one particular action Biden hopes to right the historical wrongs Black folks have faced when it comes to housing and homeownership in this country.

    Per a White House statement, “He will direct the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to take steps necessary to redress racially discriminatory federal housing policies that have contributed to wealth inequality for generations.”

    And that’s why the story of what housing and other living conditions look like for many Black Americans is pretty bleak. It’s by design.

    Alas too often people are foolish.

    People are seduced into believing that bigger is always better, that more expensive is always better.

    Not me.

    When my children [and other people’s children, lol!] were considering post secondary education I asked them to THINK about their grades, think about how much money they have [for most 18 year old Bajans this is little or nothing] how much money their parents have to spend [most 18 year olds will grossly over estimate how much money the parents have]. Think about how much money the tax payers are willing and able to throw in.

    If the student has barely started 5th form, they must WORK to improve their grades. If they want to go to an American university they must whip the standardized tests. My advice, sit yourself down twice per week for 2 hours each time for a 10 week period and you will ace the things.

    Only after much thoughtfulness should the applications begin.

    For many students, perhaps for most BCC, SJPI, UWI are good places to begin. EARN EXCELLENT grades there. Then move to the next level. You would be amazed at how many students do not understand that it is cheaper to earn a bachelor’s degree at home, then if they desire the international experience move on to a foreign university and earn a master’s degree in 2 years or less. 2 years of living in a foreign place is half the cost of 4 years in the same foreign place, and in truth once a person has earned a master’s degree with a B or better grade nobody cares where the bachelor’s was earned. For those who wish to earn a doctoral degree I say go for it. At the master’s and doctoral level paid teaching assistantships are available. The long and short of it is that an excellent education does not have to cost 1/2 million dollars. Single parent here. First kid managed to pay off the $30,000 BDS student loan in full and on time and without any help from me, except sensibly living at home for a good few years before branching out. Got a full scholarship to a top UK university [all except housing] for the master’s degree. Got it done in 18 months, instead of 2 years. Has been gainfully employed, part time since age 16, two years between the first and second degree, and full time for much more than a decade since. 2nd kid did 2 years at BCC, then on to a Canadian university which is excellent in her artistic field. Got a year’s worth of credits for every A and B earned at BCC. The university quite rightly does not give credit for C’s. In the final year worked a PAID internship for 12 hours per week. Went to work full time in the spring of 2020. Pays her own rent, taxes, CPP etc. Has a modest OSAP loan and is managing to pay it off without any help from me, although I have been know to purchase a cheap ticket home for Crop Over or Christmas.

    It is possible to live cheap and live sweet [why you think I grow much of my own food?] But sometimes people want to boast that “I send my kid I to brand name university and it cost me and the wife half a million dollars.” I say if a person needs to spend nuff foolish money to feel good about self, then go ahead.

    I agree that for most ordinary people, and we are mostly ordinary people, USA universities have become prohibitively expensive.

    My parents, ordinary working class Bajans [I too have worked in the sugar cane fields] have 14 grandchildren and all but 3 have graduated university, several multiple times, including up to the doctoral level. 1 of the 3 is special needs. The other 2 have chosen not to go to university but are doing very well professionally in spite of that.

    As I said to John yesterday. I int that hard.


  20. In my day, I seem to remember the Barbados Scholarship I earned was $4,000.00 per year, tuition, board and lodging.

    I ended up saving some money after 3 years!!

    Unbelievable, but as far as I can remember, true.

    I never strove to get it, I never asked for it, I never even thought about leaving school; it all came naturally to me ….. and it drove some of my extended family bonkers.

    I got a good education that saw me working all over the world.

    Most importantly, it taught me how to learn new skills which I did at Intel, my first real job.

    I enjoy the challenge of learning new things which I hope to do until the day I depart this life.

    David, on the cricket tangent, I recently saw a note about that WI – English player connection with a specific Bajan secondary school reference.

    It was quite amazing.

    There is Bethell and Salt from Kolig with that link, and GENERALLY we can also cite Clyde Walcott, Prof Edwards, Robin Bynoe, Adrian Griffith, and Ian Bradshaw to name a few international cricket stars from Crupmton St.

    But another school, Cawmere, seems to have a longer list starting with Frank Worrel, Wes Hall, (and I believe Derek Sealy) and coming down to current captain Kraigg Brathwaite, Carlos Brathwaite, Roston Chase, Justin Greaves, Shane Dowrich et al.

    And specifically with the UK link there is also Gladstone Small, Ricky Elcock, Chris Jordan, who all represented the Brits and George Reifer (Scotland).

    Others like John Willoughby went on to play for USA and Roger Blades for the Bermuda team.

    Pointedly, of the 120 odd international WI team cricketers from Bim it’s quite amazing that close to 1/4 came from one institution … And then even more played for others too!

    Interesting storylines fah sure … and without the Black-white dynamic too!

    I know of a person of wealthy parents who is in the 6th year of a full time 4 year program. Wealthy parents need to know when to pull the rug from under the feet of their entitled children. Governments need to know when to do that too. But don’t tell John that I said so. Of course governments also need to know when to pull the rug from under the feet of entitled corporations.

    During the pandemic many more people were ordering online. But somebody needs to pack the things on the production line, it is not yet all done by AI, money was short, so Little Susie did weekends for a number of months in a department store warehouse. The business needed to get its goods out to its customers. Work is work. Money is money. I’ve always told my children as long as it is not gun or drug trafficking, as long as it is not prostitution do the work and take the money. Never be a poor great poppit.


  23. I did 3 years at University with the Barbados Scholarship.

    Not a cent from any family.

    I came first every year with an A and graduated with a First Class joint honours degree.

    Who in Government was going to pull the rug from under me?!!

    My family rewarded me with a flight home and back every vacation which I appreciated.

    Preferred to be home.

    Then the Dutch Government rewarded me with a fellowship to get a masters.

    Came home and immediately got a job with Intel in 1980 until it closed in 1987.

    Then I went on my own.

    Trump remade the Republican Party and Republican voters have risen consistently from 2016, simple fact.

    The working class, especially the poorer households, vote Republican and the more affluent well educated, the elites, vote Democrat.

    Unless the Democrats return to their roots they are toast.

    If the GOP returns to its pre-Trump positions, they will be toast.

    The Democrats gave these folks up for an upward transfer of wealth from those folks to the elites which support the Democrats.

    Trump just moved in and said, “well come on over” … and they did.

    Even Dick Armey, a veteran Texas conservative, told the authors of the report: “You can’t call someone ugly and expect them to go to the prom with you.”

    Once Hitler’s death camps were discovered in Europe, the communists sought to divorce their ideology from that of the fascists.

    Since they had fought so hard to destroy the fascists as the fascists had fought to destroy them, then the way to do this was to pin their ideology to the left and fascism therefore to the right.

    They did that successfully even though the gulags and other internment camps and the penchant to murder parallelled the Nazis.

    In fact, both are the ideologies of regimes which are based on the supremacy of the state, and both are anti-capitalist. It is natural for one to seek to destroy the other as happened in WWII.

    It is impossible for a capitalist to be a fascist and vice versa.

  47. President Trump 2.0

    THE RE-ELECTION, or rather the second election, of Donald Trump as president of the United States in the 2024 election has unleashed a flurry of analyses and explanations. Many of these analyses spring from the assumption that it is Kamala Harris’ failure, rather than Trump’s success, that needs to be explained.

    However, despite the temptation to weigh in on the election, it is more important that the Caribbean public gains some insight into the possible implications of Trump 2.0.

    The task of anticipating what a new Trump presidency might look like is rendered relatively easy by the fact that we have seen it before. There has been no development during Trump’s four-year sabbatical which is suggestive of a perspective or programme that deviates sharply from what was witnessed between 2016 and 2020 or leading up to 2024.

    Expect, therefore, that his largely redefined role for the United States in the world economy, withdrawing from most multilateral efforts at addressing global issues like climate change, nuclear proliferation and global war, and insisting on his right to US unilateral action on global issues, to be magnified and heightened.

    The world should not expect diplomatic finesse, pretences at niceties or any other acts of pretend fraternity that normally govern interactions between states and their leaders.

    Indeed, it is expected that Trump will use his renewed double mandate to double-down on his old perspectives. He will be in his final term, more elderly and less guarded in his approach to governance, without the guardrail of common-sense Republicans and with the US now reconditioned to accept Trumpism as normal. The Caribbean should therefore brace for the old lapses in governance and the plain “silliness” that was witnessed between 2016 and 2020.

    The attack on immigrants, the threats to gut education and health, the rejection of scientific facts about climate change, the promises to offer tax breaks for the super wealthy, the unsophisticated unilateral foreign policy goals with respect to nuclear proliferation, Russia, Israel and China are expected to continue with renewed vigour.

    However, no one should expect a “smooth” Trump presidency. It is unlikely that the non-US-centric world will allow the Trump brand to be stamped globally sans resistance.

    Secondly, it is unlikely that Trump’s fascist immigration policies and his neoliberal economic approaches will be implemented without massive social chaos, unending lawsuits, and civil chaos. The anticipated governance breaches from Trump’s politically inexperienced, ideologically untethered team will likely be the main source of chaos.

    The Trump presidency marks a collapse of US “elite consensus” which will make chaos-free internal and external US governance unlikely.

    The Caribbean and the Third World must therefore prepare for a post-US world order. The regions must so reorganise their international relations with a view to achieving less reliance on the US as an expected trusted partner, or even a responsible global leader.

    Trump is a capitalist and appreciates individual achievement.

    We need individual success, forget the fallacy of a “Caribbean” and make Barbados Great Again.

    We should have realised by now that the concept of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion DEI is dead in the water.
