Code.org responds to questions around controversial test in Barbados

On October 5th, Barbados Today published an article about a controversial computer science test held in Barbados. 

The original article, and subsequent Oct 6 articles mentioned Code.org, the Ministry of Education, Technological & Vocational Training, and the Inter-American Development Bank, (see here, here and here). I contacted Code.org on October 5 and asked the following questions:

Today (Oct 6), I received the following reply from Code.org:

As per BT’s initial Oct 5 and 6th articles, and Code.org’s Oct 6th reply to my queries (and the IDB’s Oct 6th statement and apology, and The Ministry’s response and apology), it seems – to me at least – that Code.org was not involved.

    Hasn’t the chief education officer and her support people already admitted that the objectionable questions were to be removed?

    I want to know which questions they asked to be removed. Anything less than questions 1 – 157 is incompetence.

    Why were they not removed?

    Why was the survey administered and invigilated by non school personnel?

    Because it was a secret profiling exercise. No teacher I know would allow unsupervised access to their class.

    Why was the corrected survey not signed off by the ministry of education?

    Incompetence again

    What is the action plan post the administering of the survey to the children.

    The NCPTA and unions have to review our data privacy act needs to have it amended because exception clauses allowing this data gathering exercise are currently written in.

    @The Blogmaster and @Theo … I’ll use the latter’s post @8:05AM to reengage briefly.

    This situation appeared VERY STARIGHTFORWARD. I did not need to read ALL 300 questions after seeing the 10+ survey queries posted and after reviewing details about the regionally based project targeting 11 year olds. I went through MY logical progression 😎 and gave my opinion. And indeed after all the back and forth and additional details my opinion was not changed.

    Initially I believed that this was an ANONYMOUS survey. Later discovered that it was not. However, I had already stated rather clearly that clarification that the survey questions themselves were not offensive or necessarily overly intrusive if the survey was anonymous and done professionally and transparently.

    I also noted that it was unconscionable that a respondent NAMED survey of this depth was approved. It is my experience that anonymous surveys like this are conducted for age group students always … it’s one tried and tested method to get a pulse of the children’s interaction .

    If most here consider that opinion to be contrarian or attempting to defend the indefensible then I give in to my fellow Bajans who must clearly perceive that our island can be isolated from the world as we like!

    We cannot in 2022 be going into a ‘fire-rage’ when 11 year olds are asked about drugs, sex and now transgenderism. That’s an ostrich mentality.

    In the 1970s I first saw the word ‘foop’ on a bathroom wall. I was not ‘traumatized’. I was regaled by a few female primary school class-mates about some amazing (salacious to my mind back them) sexual escapades in their neighborhoods and about some of their neighbors getting chop-up wid cutlasses; my trauma was manageable.

    My point of all that is these now 50 plus years on from THAT LEVEL of ‘rambunctiousness’ my fellow Bajans are neglecting to accept that in schools all across the island the more mature 9 year olds regale their school mates with viewings of explicit Tik-Tok or FB videos of sex, drugs and gang warfare ! … I suggest they are much less traumatized at 11 years than we expect … a survey questionnaire about drugs, sex and the same gangs may surprise them but surely should not shock or traumatize!

    The survey was unprofessionally managed … that’s plainly obvious but to get so discombobulated about the type and tone of the questions is a bit self righteous nonsense, IMHO!

    Your earlier statements were not as clear to me as this one is. However, there is one paragraph that could be a bone of contention

    And that is really the part of your post that bothers me. The line must be drawn somewhere. What is your cut-off age for when children can be asked by strangers about sex, drugs and transgenderism? Five?

    We ALL know that these albino-centric institutions have their particular biases (akin to the Petra Wicky – French Husband arrangement.)

    After all the COVID era bailouts, IMF accolades and grand speaking tours, is it not EXPECTED that the bills will come due for repayment …. in kind?

    This is a SIMPLE case of the ‘chattel’ being assessed to see how future repayments may be extracted.

    OBVIOUSLY the whole thing HAD to be facilitated by a VERY SENIOR official (otherwise principals and teachers would have been doing dixie about strangers in their classrooms with shiite surveys)
    THAT official has gone AWOL, but this is just the TIP of the iceberg…

    The REALITY is, that our donkeys now belong to these perverts, UNLESS we can find a way to pay back their $$$$ which we borrowed to live above our means, and to punch above our weight class.

    Now it seems that our children will end up living below their weight class and being punched in their donkeys.

    Meantime, our supreme leader has managed to beg the Chinese for a stadium.
    No doubt they will be giving us those $$millions out of the oriental kindness of their hearts and expecting nothing in exchange.

    Did you not read where I disagreed with the process? My point stands, we like to bury, contradict and reinterpret when it suits our own purpose. Children in societies we like to reference on BU as models, including education, are being exposed to sex ed from primary school. Here we are talking about 11 is too young. You feel 11yrs is too young for a child to self-harm, experience gender dysphoria or be attracted to his/her best friend of the same sex? The evangelicals that are all over the news are more traumatic to more children than that test could ever be.

    I was told of an exchange years ago between a young upstart MOE who called a principal to enquire why a school girl was sent home because of her hairstyle, after the parent went to the Ministry to complain. The principal informed the MOE that as long as he was running the school he will set policy and if she did not like it, she was welcome to come run the school. The school girl changed her hairstyle and was back in school the next day.
    The days of principals leading their school’s and MOE providing guidance are over, the MOE has relegated principals to manager status.
    Julia Beckles at Alleyne and Anthony Alleyne at Deighton were both doing incredible jobs and the MOE moved them without informing parents our staff. If anyone thinks the principals had any say in this matter you clearly have not been aware the deliberate and systematic effort of the MOE to reduce principals powers and prop up compliant tow the line types.

    This not about sex education. I would not class being asked to answer over 200 questions in two hours as sex education or as coursework. The is was not an attempt to educate the children in anything and was just information gathering . The children did not benefit here. In all likelihood they were harmed.

    We should not get carried away. Surveys are done by schools/students on a regular basis to evaluate. Let us discuss the issues dispassionately.

    It frightens me when we have similar questions. Spending millions and producing two world class athletes every 50 years is not a good spend.

    And we have others sportsmen/women who are creating headlines and giving the island publicity without having the benefit of a stadium.

    Perhaps all the abstract off the wall questions combined with mathematical, logic and IT questions and family backgrounds and sexual orientation
    was to see what types of people achieved the best results
    ie they were doing their own research for their own benefit

    IT work is a boring and unsocial job which anyone can pick up eventually although some may be quicker, but will get bored first

    All types of people including oddballs are employed

    I think anyone who wants to do it can

    and everyone should be given training in the basics

    you can also learn coding skills online self teaching

    THIS IS NOT ABOUT A PRACTICAL SURVEY TO YOUNG CHILDREN THIS IS ABOUT SELLING ONE SOUL TO THE DEVIL FOR MONEY AT ALL COST.

    AS SOMEONE WHO HAS PREVIOUSLY TAUGHT COMPUTER AND MANAGEMENT COURSES AT A FLORIDA TECHNICAL COLLEGE BESIDES UWI CAVEHILL TO STUDENTS FROM 19 YEARS OLD AND OLDER.

    THE FLORIDA TECHNICAL COLLEGE HAS NEVER GIVEN A SURVEY TO ANY UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT AS PART OF ITS ASSESSMENT AND THIS FIASCO OF 300 QUESTIONS WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN GIVEN OR DEBATED TO YOUNG AMERICAN ADULTS AT THAT COLLEGE HAVING PREVIOUSLY SAT IN MANY FACULTY MEETINGS.

    WITH ANY COURSE A STUDENT WILL ONLY PASS OR FAIL UNLESS SHOWING APTITUDE AND ATTITUDE NOT BY THIS 300 QUESTIONS SURVEY BORDERING ON STUPIDITY AND MONEY GRAB REQUIREMENT.

    everything is APTITUDE and ATTITUDE….that’s the US educational system in a nutshell…

    but these are trying to turn this WICKED ACT into their usual SELF MASSAGING NONSENSE instead of the CRIMINAL ACT IT REALLY IS….the usual justification of crimes against Afrikan people in this instance a testing study using 11 and 12-year-olds…without knowing all the facts surrounding this project.

    don’t mind them, they will soon run out of justification and excuses..
