The decision by Prime Minister Mia Mottley to reverse the controversial appointment of 18 year old Khaleel Kothdiwala is unfortunate. It was evident from exchanges in the last session of the Upper House the amendment to the Constitution to allow Khaleel’s sitting would not have garnered support from independent senators.

Immediately after the January 19, 2022 general election Prime Minister Mottley announced Kothdiwala’s as a BLP nominee for the Senate with the justification she was fulfilling an election promise to bring the youth into “the centre of governance and national determination…if you are old enough to vote then you must be old enough to serve”. All who have followed politics in Barbados are patently aware Khaleel’s politics is heavily influenced from Roebuck Street – and it is right to practice the politics of his choice.

The prime minister became swell headed by a second 30 to zero victory in the last general election and took for granted Khaleel’s appointment would have been rubber stamped by the Senate. Lest we forget, the Senate is currently involved indirectly in a fight for its legitimacy. Although the constitutional motion brought by former Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite was tossed out by Justice Cicely Chase, legal counsel Garth Patterson signaled appeal documents will be filed this week to challenge the Upper Chamber doing business with 18 appointed Senators instead of 21.

From comments posted to BU and aired in other fora, those opposed to the appointment of Khaleel took umbrage to the lack of national consultation about the unprecedented decision to add an 18 year old BLP supporter to the Senate to represent youth matters. Bear in mind Mottley- also in controversial and contentious circumstances- transitioned Barbados to a Republic in November 2021. The dissenting cry then was – why not complete an exercise of national consensus to determine a new constitution to make the process to a republic comprehensive.

At the root of the uncertainty muddying the governance process is an election result that rejected opposition candidates AND the unwillingness of elected members of parliament to cross the floor to manufacture an opposition. This is interesting against the rumour Mottley called a snap general election to quell a political mutiny.

There is also the contention that President Sandra Mason is partly responsible by her refusal to appoint two apposition Senators given the outcome of the general election. Had she appointed two Opposition Senators and Mottley a standin for Kothdiwala there would possibly have been no legal challenge brought and Mottley would have avoided the political embarrassment of having to withdraw Khaleel’s appointment.

It is what it is as the popular saying goes. We wait to endure the Court Appeal process and possible request for leave to appeal to the CCJ. In the meantime there is the potential lawmaking in parliament will be disrupted if Justice Chase decision is overturned.

At a time the country is battling to manage economic challenges acerbated by the pandemic we have become mired in process because of off flippant decision making. It is ironic the Upper House that is currently under challenge in the Barbados courts is responsible for Mottley’s decision to remove Kothdiwala.

We are living in interesting times.

So no consultation on the abolition of the 11+ or people assemblies is required then as they are election promises? IPL legislation will alter what existing constitutional rights? In contrast, what will reducing the age of eligibility to be elected to the LH or appointed to the UH (considering what 18yr olds can do now) cause? Chalk and cheese. The fact remains that we tout “consultation” to appear progressive when we’re far from progressive. The 18yr issue is a good example. We also well know that there are simple matters that do not need national consultation. Talk about transparency, then criticise disclosure. Ask for youth involvement, then scream too green. Preach succession planning, then bemoan mentorship. I am convinced that there are some in certain camps that are scared of a “too green” 18yr old.

The “K K” is widely read and quite au fait with the Constitution. But he has the predilection of reading it, sometimes, through red-tinted spectacles.

The BU archives will show that he is quite conversant with that Supreme Law; especially those provisions regarding your hobbyhorse, the appointment and disappointment of the Leader of the Opposition.

We are happy to see that he has shed the political scales of youthful exuberance and is now prepared to accept the olive branch the Red Bishop Atherley has extended to him.

At the ‘mature’ age of 18 and with his eyes set on high political office he ought to be man enough to retract those awful and sometimes abusively rude things he did have to say about the poor Bishop who was merely playing the role of Judas assigned to him in order to protect the integrity of the Mot(t)ley administration in 2018.

Had the red Bishop not crossed the floor and taken up the position of the LoO wouldn’t the same GG (now President) have been put in the same checkmate situation as pertains today?

According to Westminster custom, what would have been the outcome if Atherley were that stubborn in his refusal to ‘act’ as the LoO; even if illegally’ so, according KK’s reasoning.

A return to the polls, iteratively, until you get a duly elected Opposition; if we are to accept the political logic according to you John Knox?

The 5 Layers of Being: Pancha Kosha

Rather than just addressing the physical body, yoga ascertains that there are indeed 5 bodies, 5 layers of self or being, that must be addressed for overall healing to take place. Known as Koshas or layers or sheaths, each layer moves from the outermost physical body to the deep spiritual core. The 5 Koshas or Pancha Kosha are listed below:

    Annamaya Kosha

Represents the physical body, including the skin, muscles, tissue, fat and bones. When you pinch the side of your waist and feel the skin and muscle under your fingers, you engage with annamaya kosha. We spend the most time hanging out here, locked in our physical senses

    Pranamaya Kosha

Represents the subtle body — the circulatory system for prana, or “life-force energy.” It also includes blood, lymph and cerebrospinal fluid through the body. Psychologically, it controls our bodily and spiritual rhythm.

    Kosha Yoga Co_5 Koshas

    Manomaya Kosha

Represents the deep recesses of the mind, emotions and nervous system. It is the control panel for the emotional and physical body, sending messages through your brain synapses and the central nervous system. It’s this layer where you move from physical feeling to emotional feeling.

    Vijnanamaya Kosha

Diving underneath the sea of emotions in the manomaya kosha, we reach the wisdom body —Vijnanamaya Kosha, representing awareness, insight and consciousness. Instead of simply feeling or acting, we choose to feel or act with intention.

    Anandamaya Kosha

Represents your Atman, the pure and radiant bliss body. Within this kosha, you might experience a connection with all things, liberation from suffering and a deep meditative state.

Throughout the day, notice yourself shifting between the koshas layers:

    Right now I feel hot.

Right now I’m paying attention to my breathing.

    Right now I feel upset.

Right now I understand why I reacted that way yesterday.

Right now I’m deep in meditation.

    Right now I feel bliss.

  24. We live in a majority black population. Approximately one third of our population live in dire poverty. Many would argue that Barbados majority population are disenfranchised. Which makes it all the more ridiculous that our Prime Minister should be promoting the interests of a half-Indian boy who appears to come from a reasonably protected background. Why has this young boy become the poster child for discrimination and unfair treatment in a modern day Barbados when our country has consistently suppressed its black majority population.

We have a Prime Minister who has recorded two clean sweeps in a row in the last two general elections. She has the mandate to introduce revolutionary changes which could elevate the majority black population. Instead she chose to go down the route of distraction with this young mutt – KK. Meanwhile, the plight of blacks continues to be frustrated and depressed by her arrogance and cynicism towards them.

One commentator was terribly disrespectful towards Mia’s most recent challenger at the last general election calling her “piss poor”. What is piss poor to me is a leader who is elected to the highest office in Barbados and choses to remain silent on corruption whilst presiding over the demise of her own race whilst indulging in gimmickry.

The roots of Barbados demise and destruction are fully on view in ICIJ annals. It’s a road map of who’s who in the world of finances. It helps to explain why we cannot put our faith in the current mob in office and whomever we decide to replace them with.

On another note, the EU and America have warned the Caribbean that if they continue to pursue with their Citizen By Investment schemes, their citizens would have to apply for visas. It would be interesting to note how and where our Caribbean governments invested the monies and where the money ended up?

Sonia Browne spent $27,000 to Michael Lashley’s $18,000 in St Philip North; Richard Sealy forked out $30,000 to Caddle’s $61,000 in St Michael South Central; and Dr David Estwick spent $30,000 compared with Kay McConney’s $34,000 in the run-up to the poll in St Philip West.

Former Opposition Leader Bishop Joseph Atherley, who failed in his bid to oust Holder in St Michael Central, spent a little more than $4,000 – the least amount of money on the election campaign as an incumbent.

The official Return of Election Expenses released Friday by Supervisor of Elections Angela Taylor revealed that the biggest spenders came from among Cabinet members, with Christ Church West Central MP and Minister of Environment and National Beautification Adrian Forde topping the list with $89,120 in expenses.

I’ve often said in this forum that particular interest is not taken in what was written, but who wrote it.

I read contributions in which the author of the above comments, used PEJORATIVE REMARKS to describe Mottley. Perhaps he/she believed that, based on his/her assessment of Mottley, he/she was NOT being “terribly disrespectful,” but, JUSTIFIED in doing so.

And, similarly, based on my assessment, I came to the conclusion that the former DLP president’s tenure was “piss poor.”

However, the author has displayed his/her hypocrisy in this forum on several occasions. It suddenly occurred to him/her that it is “terribly disrespectful” to describe someone or their tenure as ‘piss poor.’

But, I remember there was a time when a certain man was in the habit of likening other contributors to animals; calling them from ‘wild beasts, savages and predators that should be in the jungle……. to mealy mouthed keyboard warriors and appallingly ignorant semi-literate buffoons.’

Interestingly, the author DID NOT at any time admonished the man for being “terribly disrespectful,” but DECIDED to CONFER the title of “BRILLIANT” on him instead.

    Only on BU.

If the story you relate it is true, then folks were treated as they deserved.

Don’t blame the shopkeeper, blame those who continue to patronize the business.

  44. This blog should not allow posters to call peoole mutts because of their mixed ethnicity. Such posts should be removed.

  45. At some stage Mia will have to cut out the rhetoric. She needs to adopt a strategy based on pragmatism.

  46. When George Floyd was asphyxiated by a racist cop our black politicians on the island had nothing to say. When black Americans took to the streets in their droves, Mia dismissed it as a passing fad or trend (paraphrased). When a black Bajan is discriminated against she says nothing.

Russia invaded Ukraine and within one week she (Mia) jumped onto the band wagon and called out Russia. She went against the constitution and selected a young mixed race student to become a senator. Her pick was dismissed. She and the media inferred the young man had been discriminated against due to his age, race and religion.

There is a pattern here for all to see: black lives in Barbados have become meaningless. There appears to be a clear policy in place to demean and displace Barbados black majority population. I believe this government may have in place a migration policy which will encourage at least a third of their black population to migrate.

She told the Queen of Babylon to begone

Babylon the Great, commonly known as the Whore of Babylon, refers to both a symbolic female figure and place of evil mentioned in the Book of Revelation in the Bible. Her full title is stated in Revelation 17 (verse 5) as “Mystery, Babylon the Great, the Mother of Prostitutes and Abominations of the Earth”

  48. @ Northern Observer,

“……“We” have no control over who are parents are, nor who raises us, nor where we are raised.”

You are correct. However, it would be disingenuous of you to underscore the significance and symbolism of the mixed raced/mulattos communities throughout the Caribbean, Central and South America. They were conceived out of violence and were bred within a forced sexual arena between a slave master and a subjugated slave girl.

As a result of this forced union, the slave master created a buffer zone between himself and his slaves. Mulattos were insulated to a large degree from the sufferings and indignities inflicted on those people who resembled their mother’s skin colour.

Mulattos had a relative free pass to prosper in the new world, unlike their African descendants. Take a tour of Barbados and Jamaica and it is evident which group benefitted from slavery.

This is a contentious subject which is never discussed. The promotion of this mixed race boy in the context of our history should not be treated lightly. Bob Marley was of mixed race descent but was raised by his black mother. Brother Bob was a champion of everyone, however he was very much rooted in his black/ African identity. Can we say the same of this ultra conservative young man?
