26 years ago there was a hue and cry when a then young Minister of Education who managed a group of artists brought school aged students to the Wildey Gymnasium to be “feted” by none other than Mr. Edwin Yearwood, Pic of De Crop winner.

At the time this mass “party” was unheard of but clearly went on to become a staple of B/DLP politics, campaigning and our cultural and sub cultural landscape.

Fast forward 27 years to the present and we have a young Minister of Education who manages a group of artists and uses them for promotional and motivational student videos (covid, back to school, stop the bullying etc.) including the popular Mole, Peter Ram and others.

BUT, here is the rub. The attached video shows the duality of entertainment and the flip side of performance roles.

TROJAN RIDDIM MIX VIDEO

So, one day it’s go to school, learn well, sanitise and don’t trouble nobody. The next day it’s gunshots showering like storm, high grade, kush, 357’s, AR’s and coffins for informers who get shot.

All coming from the same mouths, with the same faces, in the same spaces.

All managed and seemingly endorsed by a young Minister of Education whose business interests apparently diverge from the broader national, social and values based interests when convenient.

Imagine this at a time when violence, guns, shooting and fear of serious crime continue to climb. This is what far too many of our young people glorify, rejoice in and give praise to.

As one of the same said artists said over 30 years ago…..

“Well boh, I find out doh, uh NOW realise how de yutes get so”

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

That’s what you call a rather rhetorical question.

The Blogmaster already knows it had to be crafted by Lil ‘dickhead’ Ric(h)’s former but still de facto (PR) manager called the honourable SB.

BTW, what ever became of the motor manslaughter case the same Lil man was so drunkenly mixed up with in incestuous Barbados?

The blogmaster would pay a few dollars to find out who wrote Lil Ric’s statement in response to this fracas

  8. Hot topics in Bim
Boy ’bout here hot enough, and I ain’t mean from the sun either. I talking ’bout the going-ons.
First, it was the slogan being used by the tourism people to help advertise Barbados overseas. As you know, it was “ Little Island, Big Barbados”. Which I refer to as “Little appeal, big mistake”.
’Cause apparently that “little this, big that” theme was used by a bariffle of countries before, but, truthfully, before I even knew that it was a hand-medown and was something that Sam, Pooch and de duppy used before, I didn’t like it. Because, just now the world will be reopening for travel, so when we put something out there it has to be appealing and that was not cutting it.
Then on top of that, we hear that a company overseas was paid half-million dollars to come up with that hand-me-down slogan and to supply some kinda camera footage.
Well, Bajans suggested that Mia go and knock on these people door and tell them that we would like back we money for this igrunce. However, I don’t feel we could get back a cent.
But it serve we right. ’Cause we got some of the most creative brains right her in this ‘little island, big Barbados’, but the people with the purse strings like them don’t think so.
’Cause as soon as we want something do we does get on a plane and fly to somebody country and pay them to do it for we.
Meanwhile, some young unemployed girl at home in St Peter could do the same very thing twice as good and at a far, far cheaper price. But we seem to got this strong belief that once it come from over in away it got to be superior to anything we could do ’bout here.
So I ain’t asking you, I telling you, any schoolchild ’bout here could have come up with a better slogan.
Anyhow, I honestly feel that now Mia has decided to tear up the slogan and start afresh with a committee to come up with a new slogan that we should have a national competition, inviting people to send in a slogan and give the winner a li’l ten thousand. What you feel?
    Glorifies guns
The other hot issue seems to be this series of songs of which Lil Rick, Peter Ram and a few other artistes did on one riddim, which glorifies, guns, violence and murder.
I see the PM come out and strongly condemned the songs and the accompanying video. She also asked that the singers issue an apology to the people of Barbados and that they remove the video from social media.
Well, at the time of writing this I saw Peter Ram had issued an apology. But the thing is this: there never was a good time to glorify guns, violence or murder and this certainly is not the time.
So I don’t know what these fellas was thinking, especially when we got so much killing and shooting ’bout here every day. The very last the last thing I would expect any artist to be doing is singing about shooting or killing people with his big guns.
But the reason why these kinda songs are so popular among young people is because our DJs (even on radio) play a lot of this nonsense from Jamaica about guns and killing and our young people lap up these songs.
So I generally believe that these Bajan singers just wanted to be in the do too and ride on that wave of “bad man music”, without truly weighing the consequences or fully understanding the environment in which we live.
However, don’t let us fool ourselves, ’cause it’s easy to jump on a bandwagon to beat up these artistes. We still need to address the bigger picture, which is, where are all of these guns in Barbados coming from? And how is it that the police can’t seem to make a dent into the supply?
’Cause don’t matter what pretty slogan the tourism people got to advertise Barbados and two white people come ’bout here and get shoot down dead . . . well, I ain’t got to tell you how that could damage we tourism.
So, yes, condemn Lil Rick and Peter Ram all you like, but don’t watch the bus, watch the route. ‘Cause right now yuh watching the bus. See ya.

  9. Menace to society
The raging debate about the Trojan Riddim Mix is necessary. It has exposed one of the most serious issues in modernday Barbados, and it is an incipient cancer that cannot be ignored.
We are an independent country in charge of our destiny and what has now come to the fore in graphic and serious manner is a video which seemingly promotes the fearsome law of the gun and its violent use in an illegal and countercultural and anti-social manner.
There can be no misunderstanding the lyrics of the gun songs being performed.
The destructive capacity of the various weapons is highlighted with the explicit accounts of what they can do.
No society can peacefully exist if the forces of lawlessness are glorified and applauded. Nor should any law-abiding society tolerate the promotion of efforts which clearly and openly seek to drive fear of reprisals into the minds of those who may have witnessed criminal acts and who might be correctly or incorrectly described in the video as “informers”.
If left unchecked, the promotion of such anti-social messages, once they catch root, will destroy the foundations of our society. The significance of this matter is underlined by the current rise in firearmrelated charges before the courts and the increasing number of murders in which firearms are said to have been involved.
There may be debates about the sources from which these guns are coming. That is a legitimate aspect of the matter which we believe is being dealt with on a continuing basis, and there are ongoing efforts to plug these loopholes.
But there must be no blurring of the issues.
Even if the proliferation of guns in the society was not a live issue, creating and posting a video which openly and deliberately promotes the use of gun violence and preaches death to witnesses or suspected informers, is an activity that cannot ever be justified on the grounds of creative licence.
All right-thinking members of this society should frown on this action.
The issue is not really about the rhythm, but is even more fundamentally concerned with the lyrics and the violent anti-social messages being conveyed on the back of beats which are attractive to the ear.
Social media is one of modern society’s two-edged swords. It has given birth to a powerful and persuasive medium through which any artiste or indeed anyone can now shout his or her views from the mountain top and make them available to his fellow citizens. However, it can also be disruptive and potentially destructive.
The reality is that popular artistes of any genre have niche audiences to whom they project their offerings. The Trojan Riddim video is directed at the general market of young followers of the dancehall or “riddim” fans. One of its clear messages in relation to the malevolent use of firearms is anti-social and destructive of this society. It should be condemned by the vast majority of the people.
It may not influence all the people in its catchment market, but it will influence some, who may then become desensitised to the use of illegal firearms and the associated evils of such behaviour. That is reason enough to condemn the video.
Its emergence is a dangerous development in our country.

These editorialists are propaganda experts or think they are. Pretending that they now suddenly discover this genre of music. Politicians align themselves with artistes when it’s convenient.
I remember attending political meetings that were actually meetings and outside of a healthy dose of humor,0ne learnt something about slight policy differences but walked away analyzing speeches and so on. Of course there were always the vendors making a dollar. And the adjacent rum shop doing a brisk trade.
Nowadays, political meetings are like Crop over without the costumes. Musicians get big dollars for singing songs directly to influence the yute. Free alcohol given to underage citizens. Big up politicians get all the photo ops with the same artiste they know want to band.
The fall out with the Rastafarians is because promises made to them have been broken. These promises were made during the last election. The Rastafarians were told that they would be integral to the development of the marijuana industry. There was some window dressing and then the government went in a completely different direction and betrayed the promise.
It’s one big mess the whole country is now on speed dial. Politicians reaping what they sow and fire gine bun them. The wool is slowing coming off the people’s eyes. You warned them time and time again that a rudderless ship can end up anywhere .

they are still being warned, this time with info some did not have and those who do, pretend otherwise…at some point there will be no more warnings and they will be on their own.

THEY ALL KNOW that the criminal minorities are INVOLVED in black destruction along with the sellouts in the parliament, bar association and judiciary…but they still continue to take it lightly, that’s on them..

am sure you are familiar with hearing the above info…it’s no secret..but the ignorant would still want to put the blame on people who have no power to fight these minority criminal elements foisted on them by the vicious ministers whom the people elect..

  16. The laissez-faire attitude of the BDLP should surprise no one. To a man and a woman they would have profitted with their association with these shady minority characters.

Recently a member of the minority community expressed his anger that he was not selected to run for parliament.

I can see a backlash towards these people as witnessed in Kenya, Zanzibar and Uganda. A case of history repeating itself. The Arab coloniser was put to the sword in Zanzibar,. The sultan of Zanzibar was chased off the island. Whilst Asians were expelled from East Africa.

Barbados needs to pay particular attention to those minorities who entered Barbados post our independence. This group, in particular, represents an existential threat to Barbados majority population.

You will notice that the above Nation Editorial conveniently omits the role played by the political class in promoting the same gun-related activities as if these acts of violence started just a few weeks ago.

Were any of the modern “yutes” involved in the gun-pulling incident within the precincts of the law-making ‘court’ of the land?

Why doesn’t the same Nation tell its readers and the ‘nation’ whatever became of that incident which was reported to the relevant law enforcement agency?

Why doesn’t the same hypocritical member of the fourth Estate (the watchdog for the people’s democracy) highlight the outstanding presence of known illegal drug dealers at the June 2018 opening of Parliament?

Why doesn’t the same two-faced newspaper enquire into the treatment of the mother of the dead Abijah Holder compared to that special treatment given to the father of Luke from the clan of Bjerk-o-ham involving a deadly firearm and not a motor car?

Why can’t this newspaper comment on certain issues in the Two Barbadoes when it comes to the application of Justice?

BTW, have you heard anything more about the killing of the Moseley man on the “highway” earlier this year?

  18. Was in a discussion with some oldsters about the music in the video. They said they did not see anything wrong with it and believed the artiste were not glamorizing crime and violence, but only relating what is currently happening in the society.

They asked how could people be so hypocritical when the ‘oldie goldies’ they love listening and dancing to are also filled with violence, infidelity, promiscuity, domestic abuse, sex with under aged girls? Were the singers of those ‘love’ songs glamorizing those activities?

According to them, Lil Rick singing about a gun gets a ‘thumbs down,’ while Marty Robbins’ ‘gunfighter ballads’ gets a ‘thumbs up.’

i took note that the same lawyer who represented this criminal minority in the killing of his child, (a white child) that the DPP deceased dug until he found a 17th century slave master law to free the culprit in that death…. is the same one now saying he will not represent any of those accused of killing the policeman….and these lawyers expect people to take them seriously..

.bet you he did not rush off to represent the deceased Holder child’s mother in any capacity when they set her up and charged her, used her and her child to be elected and., whose death maloney is directly responsible for,

    Re Donna June 1, 2021 2:14 AM

That is the crux of the problem. This music has changed from telling a story, to glorify it and goes even worse. Bashment (and to some extent Bashment Soca) is a genre that is almost DEFINED by the abject vulgarity and violence in the lyrics. Some of the songs are blatant audio pornography!!!!. Then you have the dj mixes that would mix the raw songs with the “cleaner” reggae, dancehall and bashment but would be ad-libbing with some of the most vulgar garbage. Technology would allow these mixes to be easily shared on CDs and flash drives and played on public transport for all to hear. When you listen to this music it is clear these artists, the DJs and the fanbase have a broken moral compass. When this music was initially criticized the pushback was that other genres had dirty songs. There is no other genre that can compare to Bashment. Gangsta rap also would usually have X rated lyrics and some messages I don’t agree with. Bashment is decidedly worse. Other genres would have a few risque songs but artists were never made popular solely from explicit, violent songs.

In my opinion mass media especially FM radio stations must take SOME the blame helping this music to be entrenched into Bajan society for the better part of 30 years. They sought to ride the wave of popularity of these artists and DJs. All they have done is to validated these artists and normalize music that had no right being played outside individual’s private space. What is laughable was that even though the radio edits remove the cuss words it could as well left it unedited as the songs were made popular from the raw versions and the topic is blatantly vulgar. These stations also encourage DJs \ announcers to emulate the style on these vulgar dj mixes. These artists and DJs are ALWAYS used to promote alcohol and others items that we that don’t particularly want children and teens to use but they comprise most of the listenership!!!!!
I do not support that music or listen to those FM stations WHEN they play it. This music consistently destroys the lines of what is socially acceptable. As a black person, I also detest how it portrays black people in the music videos as as mindless idiots that want to get rich quick, only loves guns, drugs expensive items and girls dressed in skimpy suits. It is the height of STUPIDITY.

Then we EXPECT these artists to suddenly transform into positive role models. 20-30 years of validation will not stop theses artists doing music that is popular and made them popular!!!!!!!. And we ask how de yutes get so?

We also PERCEIVE their behaviour to be hypocritical. It was always clear these artists moral compass only points to where the money is. They pretend to be positive when PAID to appear in commercials, PSAs or to DJ on FM stations. The point is I don’t think they ask to be role models or don’t particularly care, they just perform their music and get paid. They leave the “policing of morals” to wider society. It is society has lost interest in the policing of such morals.

Part the of the current outcry is because Lil Rick and Peter Ram (in particular) are in this video mix. Anybody with knowledge of their history knows that this is their normal. They have always released slack songs. It just that they have gain acceptance to the mature crowd by performing and DJing very good songs in other genres and people just gloss over the slack songs. This is not the first time Lil Rick has been chastised for being hypocritical. Lil Rick has been fired from a radio station already for such behaviour!!!!!!!. But now we want to ACT surprised. Some of them now want to offer apologies. This is only an INSULT to my intelligence!!!!. They are only sorry that the mix got the unwanted attention in the GENERAL PUBLIC. If they had any moral fiber they would not have participated is such a disgusting mix IN THE FIRST PLACE especially when they didn’t NEED too!!!. They were making non vulgar songs that were also very popular!!!!!

I always had a problem using these artists as supposed role models in PSAs when this vulgar music started be popular. It just promotes hypocrisy by association. How can businesses, Gov’t & NGOs use artists to promote a positive message when they became popular promoting negativity!!!!. The riot act should have been read long ago when people predicted this behavior would just contribute to the social decay. But for 30 years WE LIKE IT SO. Well in my opinion this backlash is 25-30 years too late.

  30. Why don’t people take responsible action for their children and stop looking in the world for role models
The Bible tells parent to train up the child in the way it must go and when the child is old
The child would not depart from the training
Too many parents today expect the world to be example to the child while they do whatever necessary for themselves
Parents needs to practice being a parent( more often )than not
    Xxxxc
These artist have livelihoods and the game is to follow the money
Govt not any example look across the middle east or even at regions closer at home Venezuela for example and the blood and gore of innocent lives
Who wrote them lyrics I am asking

  31. Can I call you Angie?

You have allowed yourself to be distracted. Instead of investigating and highlighting stories of interest you spend time ‘talking shit’ with John 2.

Now you know that J2 is no match for you. Get back on track.

  32. How does this jail thing work.
All I am reading is two year here, two years there and innocent.

If I come a visiting and de police think my wallet is a gun… is that two years before I get out?

Hopefully, I can access BU from my cell.

Seriously, how does this jail time work.

  33. Yesterday I was going to post Tom Jones’ Delilah and Laura. Kenny Rogers’ Coward of the County and a few other country and western songs.

I guess when the white ma sings it, it has to be good.

Covid has provided us with the chance to pause and confront all of our contradictions.

We had better take advantage of it and stop bashing the young people. They do not respond well to bashing from hypocrites.

If we want them to listen to us we need to come clean.

  34. “Convicted man Neco Ramone Johnson today apologized to a female passenger who was injured when he and two other men threw rocks at a minivan over eight years ago.”

Should this have taken eight years.

  35. With all the long talk about “influencers ” and lyrics
What about Mia influence from what is being said her statement of advice to the influencers fell flat on deaf ears receiving a backlash reminiscent to the 30-O the past govt received….. with thousands of views and likes supporting the entertainers
Meanwhile a PM with much popularity has received her first embarrassing official down grade because of her vocal lyrics after heralding advice to protect the moral fibre of the country
As the old people advice if greedy wait hot would cool
A message which Mia could have kept to heart instead of jumping head first in the lion’s den

  36. WTF! Radio Mixes
The “Barbados Underground” Blog Site is for the Bitches and Snitches with their Agendas, like the nasty ass black face Indian Haters Harold Abigail William and their same old fucked up propaganda and spin on every fucking topic

I get deep, I get deep, I get deep, I get deeper
    Into this thing
    The deeper I go
    The more knowledge I know
    What to sing
    What to bring
    Wha…
I get deep, I get deep, I get deep, I get deeper, deeper, deeper
    Into the Vibe
    What I
    Why
    What
    Why
The one, the ones that say
They know what is what but they don’t know what is what
    They just strut
    What the fuck?
    Wha
I get deep, I get deep, I get deep, I get deep, I get deeper
    Into this thing
And I pretend that they’re not there
    I just stare
Up in the booth at the dread man spinnin the song
    Spinnin it strong
    Playing things like
    When can our house Begin
    That’s my shit
    What?
    Whoooooo!

  41. I cannot recall with any degree of certainty which of the Political Party were at the helm when dialogue were being had in parliament regarding the outlawing of Jamaican Dance Hall Reggae Music in Barbados during the early 1980s.
Nevertheless, the consensus among the Power Brokers in Bridgetown at the time, were that the Jamaican Dance Hall lyrics were inciting violence among the Barbadian youths of the 80s ( I myself being one of them), and something had to be done to stemmed its influenced of the behaviour of the Barbadian youths of the day.
However, dialogue regarding this conscientious proposal had within it more smoke than fire, so the Power Brokers in Bridgetown, walked away from this dialogue leaving the fire burning behind them.

  42. David June 4, 2021 8:20 AM #: “That is like comparing the greatest batsmen from different eras.”

    @ David

    Nah…… I disagree.

With cricket, the rules change over time….. some of which were advantageous to batsmen.

Despite the era and changes in laws, violence remains violence……..crime remains crime. In ‘cowboy days,’ for example, a gun was the choice of weapon and remains the choice of weapon today.

Then, surely you can’t be serious if you want us to believe ‘era’ creates a difference that separates MADD singing ‘Last Saturday Night,’ in which the comedy group described a night of shooting and killing……. and Marty Robbins’ songs of cowboys shooting and killing each other.

  43. Jamaican DJ Prophets of God were targeted for No Homo lyrics by pasty face hypocrites who have been engaging in racial war and weapons of mass destruction and who now want more money for their need of new better technology and different strategy for killing as they now claim other nations will start to use automata drones mercenaries private corporations psyops propaganda outside law like they’ve been doing since PNAC war agenda at start of the millennium

  44. @Artax

In this case it is not violence that is the key variable, it is how we are socializing our children and people to think, our values and morals we hold dear.

  45. I agree with David life is like a penis ..it can be hard for no apparent reason

  46. David BU my two cents worth i find the song to be unacceptable in these times. I do not care who is involved. To be singing stuff about grandmother private parts and if ya dead ya dead is totally vulgar and unacceptable.Persons like Lil Rick and Peter Ram who are looked up to as role models should know better. As for sensible people on here looking for all kinds of excuses should hang their heads in shame.
