How De Yutes Get So?

Submitted by Just Observing

26 years ago there was a hue and cry when a then young Minister of Education who managed a group of artists brought school aged students to the Wildey Gymnasium to be “feted” by none other than Mr. Edwin Yearwood, Pic of De Crop winner.

At the time this mass “party” was unheard of but clearly went on to become a staple of B/DLP politics, campaigning and our cultural and sub cultural landscape.

Fast forward 27 years to the present and we have a young Minister of Education who manages a group of artists and uses them for promotional and motivational student videos (covid, back to school, stop the bullying etc.) including the popular Mole, Peter Ram and others.

BUT, here is the rub. The attached video shows the duality of entertainment and the flip side of performance roles.

TROJAN RIDDIM MIX VIDEO

So, one day it’s go to school, learn well, sanitise and don’t trouble nobody. The next day it’s gunshots showering like storm, high grade, kush, 357’s, AR’s and coffins for informers who get shot.

All coming from the same mouths, with the same faces, in the same spaces.

All managed and seemingly endorsed by a young Minister of Education whose business interests apparently diverge from the broader national, social and values based interests when convenient.

Imagine this at a time when violence, guns, shooting and fear of serious crime continue to climb. This is what far too many of our young people glorify, rejoice in and give praise to.

As one of the same said artists said over 30 years ago…..

“Well boh, I find out doh, uh NOW realise how de yutes get so”

  • Wouldn’t it be funny if Rihanna held another concert here featuring her lyrical lover ASAP Rocky?

ASAP Rocky’s father was a Bajan. Convicted drug dealer. ASAP allegedly sold drugs from the age of fifteen. Father dead. Shot, they say. Brother dead. Shot, they say.

The “they say” is in deference to the fact that they is Wikipedia.

But…. ASAP’s offerings can be found on Youtube, telling the tales he knows so well.

I pray then break the law, take my share and then take some more. (Too lazy to check the exact quote.) Others labelled “explicit” requiring age verification.

Would Mia and Gabby be in the Big Up Box at de concert skinning dem teet with dollar signs in dem eyeballs????

Would BU David call dem out?

Barbados is in the middle of covid unemployment which is far worse than ash, sargassum, the skip at dover or the sewage debacle and the only cure is tourism dollars and tourists. Even though you think the carribean is in this together…. its every island for itself and they will take a different tact to lure tourists than glorifying gun violence Retirees want health and safety simple. THE MASSIVE OUTCRY across Barbados this past week about the controversial Trojan Riddim Mix music video has been met with an unexpected reaction. There has been a virtual non-violent uprising to that condemnation from a segment of the society which is normally silent or operates underground.
Quite rightly, the denouncing of the music video was swift and wide-ranging after the public became aware – even if belatedly – of it being on the market. It was bad timing for the artistes and those associated with the production for several valid reasons.
People across all segments of society are afraid given the upsurge in gun violence; and they are angry following the recent brutal murder by gunmen of a policeman.
What will also cause public outrage is the fact that some entertainers are being paid through the public purse as “influencers” but did not show the level of responsibility expected from them, especially at a time when many people are enduring severe economic hardships.
Those entertainers who quickly offered an apology realised they had no other option and those condemning gun violence understand the mood in society. However, there are developments in this episode which we would be foolish to ignore.
The threat of losing corporate sponsorship or the risk of getting entangled with the political directorate, including Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, did not move some of the entertainers. The groundswell of support they are getting from thousands of vocal people cannot be downplayed.
Indeed, that this particular music video is now the most popular local production for the year given the views and likes it has attracted also says a lot.
The young Turks are using the opportunity to push back against the status quo. The many social media platforms are alive with their viewpoints and videos pointing to what they see as double standards in society. Ethics, morality and fair play are all being questioned.
They are highlighting what is offered and allowed at various entertainment shows, particularly those featuring Jamaican dancehall artistes, the type of music being played on some of our radio stations and also on the public service vehicles.
They are speaking about the latest Auditor General’s report and the misconduct it has highlighted; last month’s tragic killing of Acting Station Sergeant Newton Lewis, and also the killing of Selwyn “Blues” Knight in March 2015; and the mysterious death of I’Akobi Maloney in June 2008.
They are asking the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) to explain what are influencers and who they are, how long they will be utilised and at what cost. Perhaps the NCF and/or any other Government agency using these influencers should say how their performance is being measured. These may be uncomfortable issues but deserving of answers.
The many social media platforms are alive with their viewpoints and videos pointing to what they see as double standards in society.
Ethics, morality and fair play are all being questioned.

“You people better stop and think about the truth in the lyrics. Understand where these people are coming from”

At first, I though your post was sarcastic. Did you actually listen to THIS particular mix ? WHAT TRUTH IN THE LYRICS ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!!!!. They are talking about dealing with “violaters and “informers” via GUN VIOLENCE and glorifying it!!!!!!.

    June 6, 2021 12:49 AM
“I have never played a Lil Rick song besides the Trojan Rhythm provided on this blog. Don’t listen to the radio at all. Never attended a show where Lil Rick performed. Years ago I watched the Cropover events on MCTV and I would have heard him on radio – not the raucous stations. Never deliberately listened to his Guiness show but I have been in places for a short while where it was being played.

I do not listen to that kind of music. But as usual, such matters are beyond your comprehension.”

Frankly Donna from reading your posts, I find them disappointing, disturbing and leads me conclude that you are not fully understanding and convoluting some issues.
Firstly, for anyone to support or promote a message that they will gun you down because they are “informers” is simply ABHORRENT!!!!! This is true regardless of whatever music type it is!!! How this hard for anyone to understand!!!!. That is far different from telling the story of a criminal or a story where times go so rough they had to resort to crime to invoke sympathy. Describing a situation is FAR DIFFERENT from explicitly promoting it !!! Frankly from the Bashment that I occasionally hear, I do not hear every song on the riddim going down the “gun violence” line. To release it via Youtube at a time the outcry against gun violence is at a high in Barbados, is stupidity so high that is affecting the RICHTER SCALE!!!!!!

Secondly, re Kidsite comments, to use a medium like BASHMENT and Gangsta Rap (whose fanbase comprise a significant portion of children under 20 years old) to promote these lyrics because there is a “MARKET FOR IT” is just makes it worse. The question is why is there a market for it in this age group and should we even be catering to it?. Kidsite is a member of the older audience that can discerned that these “gun lyrics” are unacceptable even though they may find the songs musically appealing. The evidence is that the younger adults and children are becoming desensitize to these “gun lyrics” and gun violence in general. In Barbados when I see the perpetrators in the news, very few are above 40 yrs old, Most are between 18 and 40 years old. Also the inference that these songs is one way artists can find acceptance is one that that I cannot agree with to VALIDATE them!!!!!. Bashment Soca is using some of the same lyrical styling of Bashment but most of those songs are less vulgar and explicit ( personally I just find most bashment soca artists signing rubbish topics to monotony, some are vulgar, others are usually humorous and fairly acceptable). Some of the said artistes in the video perform, soca, ragga soca, sweet soca that have has a wider audience that crosses age groups including the “Q in the Community” crowd!!!!!

Thirdly, the inference that gun violence and crime in the “poor” class is justifiable because the “priests, politicians and lawyers and does abuse lil boys and cah way taxpayers money and nutting doan happen to them” is an argument that is ILLOGICAL and simply REPUGNANT!!!!!!. At this rate, society could as well abolish laws and destroy the concept of morals!!!! Everyday there are right thinking people (including those on BU) that CHASTIZE those said ABUSERS and “BIG SINNERS”. They also CHASTIZE those who have the AUTHORITY to deal with these “BIG SINNERS” but constantly FAIL to do their job!!!!!. Is it now justifiable for persons to rob and accidental shoot people because they can’t find jobs and and use as a supporting argument the MPs that rob senior citizens can sit in parliament?!?!?!?!
    .
I am also observing that the concept of privacy and personal space is being eroded. From the most benign, legal activity SANE, MORAL MINDED people understand that although I have the right to enjoy my hobby (or vice), it might offend someone else or be seen by others that I care about but don’t want them to see or be otherwise exposed to. That is why certain activity is done within the confines of our homes, bars and strip clubs and not in the middle of any roundabout on the ABC highway!!!!!.At the same time even though I have a right to enjoy gospel music it is offensive to play it at high volumes 24 hours a day because it is offensive to atheists’ or people of other religions!!!!
Societies have the concept of age limits because it is recognized that certain choices or certain material should not be given to young people. The majority of youngsters may not fully understand the content or the consequences of certain choices. Hence there is an age limit to vote, to sexual consent, to sell alcohol to, to restrict movies in cinemas to certain ages etc. So to justify these vulgarity laden songs because people watch porn is a seriously flawed argument. It is still considered “socially unacceptable” to play porn on free to air tv and radio or in public transport or limes but more “acceptable” if you can enjoy at home out of view of children. Porn, prostitution, alcohol production, firearms production etc has existed through written history and for the same length of time its practice and consumption has (mostly) been “segregated” from the rest of society. Whenever this segregation breaks down there is an outcry from society that there is moral decay. Is it is now acceptable to play these vulgarity laden, explicit songs on any medium including Youtube that is easily accessible for especially the young to see and hear?

We are behaving as though we lost the intelligence to interpret and discern certain material. That every thing is now black & white. It is as if society is devolving and going back to a pre-civilized state.

So are we truly an anti-gun society? Or are we only anti guns in the hands of other people, while we keep our own guns?

So should we be more worried about gun songs, or should we be worried about the tens of thousands or real-real guns in this community?

I am under the impression that in Barbados gun ownership is aspirational. In Barbados we want a good job with a nice pension, a house, a car, a child or two at a good school, a USA visa, a big breed dog, a gun, and we good.

The first gun death I ever heard of in Barbados was when 2 elementary aged children were playing with the licensed gun of the father of one of them. At the end of what was to be a pleasant afternoon visit, one boy was dead, dead, dead as a doornail.

And how do you prosecute a 5 year old?

On the bright side, a few years ago I voluntarily taught a young lady to read the same year that she sat the SCREAMING TEST.

All it took was a computer, a Hooked on Phonics programme and someone willing to supervise and ask questions to ensure that she did more than just string words together.

Girl was not dumb. She simply needed some attention. Her class may have been too large. A remedial teacher would have helped. NONE was available.

Her grandmother told me that she was so excited she tried to read everything in sight.

P.S. MY SON CAN NOT ONLY READ BUT HE HAS TAUGHT HIMSELF TO CODE.

The pea brain will await you congratulations for another job well done.

I think that the only people in Barbados who need to own guns are poor black men, since poor black men, including poor black policemen are the only ones in Barbados who die by the gun.

If I had the power I would take the guns from everybody else and give one to every poor black man, so that the poor black men can protect themselves.

And I too am disappointed that you, despite your vermilion verbosity have not found it possible to answer why it is better to beat up on the tail of the beast rather than bludgeon the head!

    Miller June 7, 2021 6:05 PM

What we would like to hear from you are your views on what Donna is exposing when she wrote @ June 7, 2021 4:42 PM:
    (Quote):
The corruption of the powerful is far more deadly than a few bad boys who shoot each other.
It drains the economy of a whole nation, depriving many citizens of opportunity, adequate health care, adequate education and training – all necessary for livelihood and life.
Such deprivation is the breeding ground for the violent crimes of the youth. (Unquote).

@Miller I don’t think I have to go further to explain my stance as “espoused” in my reply at June 7, 2021 11:52 AM. To use Donna’s terms I am not following the multitude that want to beat up the “tail” as a convenient scapegoat , I want the whole monster purged and destroyed. Head, body and tail.

The particular topic here is “gun lyrics” in a bashment music video (and the gross insensitivity to release it now if not ever) By extension the focus is on the explicit, violent and vulgar lyrics in songs and their easy access and exposure to the youth. The fanbase mostly don’t listen to or comprehend politicians, political or economic issues or even world events but would usually listen to music or watch tv . So if the “beast” appears in a form trying to indoctrinate vulgar, explicit messages to the youth in a music form\style that they listen to for the past 30 years. I will attack it, just as the “beast” may appear in the form of corruption, money laundering, mismanagement of taxpayers money, economic mismanagement of a government.

Now these artists and their fans want to use in their “defense” the fact that gun violence did not start with their music. This is hardly a new counter argument. So are they using this “fact” to defend their glorifying the shooting of “informers” and “violators? Are they hoping to escape blame for perpetuating violence? Or are they saying they are playing their part in the advancement of mankind. I want them to explain their logic!!!

“Please Sir I didn’t start the concept of aggravated robbery. I have no job. I have 5 children from 6 different women and I have to support them all. I see people being sentenced to jail in the court pages for it. It seems to be an honorable activity. I didn’t mean to shoot the gentleman and the gentlelady. My gun only had in 1 bullet just in case I had to shoot any “informers” that passed by. I observe nepotism and corruption going on among politicians and among the rich in society, My evil is small, please feel for me. Leave me be in my pursuit in spreading terror and killing informers who may want to stop my wholesome endeavors. “

One question: Who fool you that the youth don’t understand politicians and don’t pay attention to such matters ?
One of the biggest mistakes we are making is that all these young people do is smoke weed and impregnate women.
You are way off target. The majority of our youth are extremely creative and law abiding. We seem to quickly forget the alcohol and village rams of our youth. Did that stop us from being engaged in : trade unions, community groups etc ?
Did you not see the youth take on CXC ?
Do you not see the youth getting athletic and sports scholarships everyday?
Don’t you read the papers and see the dozens of young doctors we are producing?
Don’t you see the youth engaged in modern agriculture techniques.
You come here stereo typing black youth and expect that to go unnoticed.
Tell me what progressive , sustainable program has been successfully developed in the last forty years by either party that has seriously contributed to the economic enfranchisement of our young black people.
And I am certainly not speaking of weed wackers.
With all due respect you are seriously out of touch on this topic.

it’s WICKED minds like that have the NATIONAL STADIUM in its present dilapidated and degraded state…DBLP Slaves trying to impress someone with their uneducated status…..while both trash governments ignore and neglect the same Black youths and only see them as fodder for their scam of a prison system….and to buy and sell the minorities’ guns and drugs..

the youths don’t have to get involved in any colonial political system DERIVED FROM SLAVERY…they can create THEIR OWN SYSTEM….
many on here are too ignorant, backward and slave minded and believe everyone else suffers from the same affliction and mental handicap

Youths don’t see or discriminate against colour race or creed as people are people. They operate on a higher vibrational level of enlightenment as God’s children and are little angels sent from heaven above. Big people have devils and angels inside them who work together as a team.

With that moniker he has declared his political agenda.

Such persons have a hymn sheet. They must sing every note accordingly.

Though both BLP AND DLP have been, in my opinion, CRIMINALLY NEGLECTFUL of our disadvantaged young people, it is THIS ADMINISTRATION that is in the hotseat for its hypocrisy.

You will notice that the hymn sheet has no lyrics to counter the substantive argument but concentrates on a catchy chorus.

    Pathetic!

However, they have mashed the people’s corns in these COVID times and they have only just begun to feel the heat.

There must be action on education reform. There must be action on the Government Industrial School. There must be action on corruption among the so-called elite,

We gave her the vote and we are watching her.

We will not allow our eyes to follow the finger pointing in the wrong direction.

The answer cannot be, “We have rebuked Lil Rick and Peter Ram for singing songs about it!”

@William it is you you are seriously out of touch with my last post and Donna you are just clueless. I never inferred that all the youth do is smoke weed, impregnate women or endorse gun violence. That is so absurd it is hilarious and sad at the same time. That is just as absurd as saying that all people that aspire to be politicians only have a corrupt agenda. You need to re read and reinterpret my previous post.

Didn’t I previously post a reaction video by a YOUNGSTER who likes the MUSIC but pokes fun of the LYRICS? My experience is that most youth do not internalize these lyrics even though they may sing them and “vibe” to the music. Kidsite’s reaction is similar in that he admires that the artists “sits down on the riddim” but does not like the themes. My problem is that these songs are creating a growing fraction of people (including the youth) who will internalize the message and want to make it their “truth”. I previously stated that after 25-30 years of this “indoctrination” this is what is happening as evidenced by the age group of those perpetrators.

The sarcasm in my previous post is directed to Donna and those diehard fans of these LYRICS who say that gunning down “informers” is a reflection of some sort of reality of an ENTIRE group( e.g. all youth or all poor people). That they should be blameless in perpetuating violence as it had already existed and the rich and politicians do not get persecute as harshly when perpetuating corruption or crime in general. These LYRICS are hardly a reflection of any truth, it is a statement of intent by a terrorist in music form. When gangsta rappers sing F__ the police, it is not a TRUTH, that is THEIR opinion on the law and hopes to share that with their fanbase. That is FAR different from the same rapper who releases songs about the harsh realities of growing up poor, black and around gun violence and the exploitation of the poor by the rich. This is what some people (including Donna) is not properly discerning and comprehending!!!!!. Are we saying that F___ the police and shooting informers is a positive message we should be re-enforcing?!?!?!?

BTW Donna you seem to have some sort of “Bee in your bonnet” about my moniker!!!. That is YOUR PROBLEM!!!! LIKE IT OR LUMP IT!!!!!

My objection is to the “GUNMAN LYRICS” and not so much to the music STYLE\FORM or to the YOUTH in general. I find it sad that this is so hard to understand. You have to think why after 25 – 30 years of the “normalizing of these lyrics” in Bashment\ Gangsta music, why one video mix is drawing such a strong reaction. PART of the reason is that some of the artists in THAT video, who have been held up as “role models” who have been widely supported singing other music is now “regressing” back to these songs with the “gun lyrics”.

Sigh, more piss from Donna!!!!! . So according to Donna’s “logic” the promotion of aggravated robberies and gun crime can continue as a bargaining chip to force govts to bring whistleblower and integrity in public life legislation. As if govts have not be CHASTIZED for their failure to do so ALREADY. The message that we ADULTS should be promoting is that both corruption and gun crime is WRONG and if a youngster wants to get into politics in the future we would like THEM to help US eliminate both. The only thing that is poor rakey is your logic. The more you comment the further down the logic hole you go.
