The U.S. midterm elections will be held on the 3 November, 2026. In this mid-term election all 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives will be contested. Additionally, 35 of the 100 Senate seats will be on the ballot, and 39 states will choose Governors. These are the elections of note although other contests at the local level will be in play.
Obviously a small open economy like Barbados is greatly influenced by policy decisions taken by the US – mainly because the Barbados dollar is pegged to the US dollar. Two obvious examples of the significant influence:
- The decision by the US to engage in military action with Iran. The consequences of which have been the rise of fuel prices because of disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
- Although Barbados is not a major exporter of goods to the US, Trump tariffs have resulted in a negative impacte indirectly via slow down in US travel, import costs and other knock-on impacts.
Although several models have predicted a swing to Democrats tomorrow night, the final outcome is highly anticipated given what is perceived by the rest of the world as a strange period in U.S. politics under President Donald Trump’s period in office.
There is no doubt that Trump’s presidency has delivered a raft of tariffs, trade disputes, supply chain disruption, geopolitical pressures- to name a few- all of which continue to create global uncertainty. An environment that is not suited to good planning and decision making.
One suspects that many global citizens will be hoping that late tomorrow night and early Wednesday morning a strong message is delivered to the Republicans that enough is enough!
