The FBI is investigating the death of George Floyd, black man who was pinned on the neck by a police officer and later died in custody. Minnesota’s Attorney General Keith Ellison joins The Beat with Ari Melber’s breaking coverage on the latest from the FBI and the protests. While the officers involved have yet to be charged, Ellison argues a “quick arrest” might “make people feel better about justice” it is “important” for investigators to “take the time to make sure that these charges, if they are brought forward, stick.

    @DavidBU from what i understand and supported by actions thus far, The commissioner did what he can and ought to which is to fire all four officers. It is the :safest option” right now. The commissioner is letting the states and federal attorneys “do their job”, which is to do the investigations, develop an irrefutable case, press charges and order the arrest of all four officers. Derek Chavin’s charges are more “clear cut” as supported by all the video circulating.
    The commissioner is removing himself and the force from any accusation of prejudice which COULD get him fired and let the 4 officers “off”. He is communicating to the public as BEST he can without prejudicing any case against the 4 officers.
    The biggest PROBLEM is finding George Floyd’s CAUSE of DEATH which affects what charges can be placed against the other 3 officers and is causing the delay. As someone said a pathologist, via a second autopsy and being an expert, MUST and will MOST LIKELY find that cause of death. The other officers will MOST LIKELY be charged irregardless of the second autopsy results though.

    I love Canada deeply. Telling the truth about Canada does not make me love the place any less. If I didn’t love Canada I would not have lived there for 40+ years.

    I also love Barbados… and yes there is a great deal wrong with Barbados, but I moved back here because I love Barbados.

    Is all that so difficult to comprehend?

    I am not making this personal, but want to get the fact s. You were born in the UK; at what age did you leave the UK? You lived in Barbados, and went to Kolij, so, presumably you left at your late teens early 20s, is that right? You lived 40+ years in Canada, putting you in your 60s. How long have you been back in Barbados?
    If you went to Kolij in the 1970s, as you have previously claimed, then you cannot be aged over 70s. And what gave you this great love for Canada after living there 40+ years? Be specific? And what makes you think because you were born in the UK and are entitled to a UK passport that you are British?
    Aren’t you being caught out by your exuberance? Your anger and black militancy may impress some, but a man who talked about relaxing on an old schooner with Charles Herbert, his old Kolij mate, cannot then come on and talk about his black pride and militancy. You were prepared to suspend due process on the basis of being at school with a white plantation boy. Make up your mind.

    Somehow there remains a general impression that Canada has no such past. As though the most important cultural develoments of the last 500 years left Canada as some sort of blank histotical slate.

    The silence from our resident scholar is troubling
    Though I doubt our resident scholar knew this or is incapable of that type of explanation
    He was quick to say no stangulation but either omitted and didn’t know what positional asphyxiation is.
    Either way I advise others not a trust anything from the resident scholar because either he deliberately left out this information or he didn’t know, which suggest malice (a sin), ignorance or both.

    I am an open book.

    Born in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1956. Lived in Barbados from the time I was a toddler until 1975. Lived in Canada with brief sojourns in the USA until 1999. Lived in Barbados for a year 1999 to 2000. Returned to Canada. Returned to Barbados to live permanently in 2017.

    I love Canada a great deal because it is a stunningly beautiful place. The last decade or so that I spent there was living on a beautiful lakeside acreage covered in 90 ft fir and spruce trees with a little sailboat at my dock. Wildlife all around: beavers, otters, black bears, moose, eagles, osprey, ravens, trout, loons ducks, geese… What’s not to love? It was a paradise only 20 minutes drive from work.

    I think I am entitled to UK passport because I applied for one and it was issued to me.

    Why can’t I enjoy a sail on an old wooden ketch (not a schooner) which is the last wooden sailboat built by Black boatwrights in Barbados. Does the fact that it is owned by rich White men obligate me to no longer be a Black man myself?

    You are COMPLETELY wrong that I wanted “to suspend due process” in the Charles Herbert case. I NEVER said or implied that he should not be arrested and face due process. He was arrested and the court system dealt with his case. What I DID say was that I was sceptical of the evidence when it was first presented on blogs. What I DID say was that it was hard for me to bel;ieve that Charles Herbert would be that stupid for so little money. Then I went digging because I had been invited to help crew the vessel because they knew that I love old wooden sailboats and that I’m a competent sailor. That’s when I was made privy to evidence, by a third party, which has not yet been presented in open court. Then I DID say was that I was in possession of evidence which proved that he was not guilty in this case. Go back and read the entire blog word by word.

    My mind is always open to the evidence, even when it does not support my opinions. If the evidence contradicts my opinions, then my opinions evolve to conform with the evidence. I call it learning. It is my second favorite activity in life.

    Does this conclude the inquisition??

    That is why I would always say there ain’t no Barbados Condition, it is a black man condition. Black people where ever they come from does behave the same way. He now mixing with white people and feeling proud. When he marry a white woman, wuh loss, he feel he arrive.

    I see the frustrated white comedians are ATTEMPTING TO be funny as usual on BU. If I’m to be exposed to white racist old dried up farts today I pick the British actors on Last of the Summer Wine. They at least, are funny.

    And most of them are harmless on account of their being dead. The others are scheduled to expire shortly.

    Peter I have to tell you as an immigrant myself it really irks me that people are welcomed to Canada given medical, food oppurtunities galore try to turn into the shithole they came from, running from famine genocide etc and because they cant have 6 wives or lop off their daughters private parts we are racists. Canada is one of the best countries in the world . I am sure you haven’t given up your citizenship to this racist country just in case you get sick or hungry. But all that aside all this negativity you seem to be putting will unfortunately reflect on your tip next time I am down.

    Old people crying because they did not get to have a prison built to lock up poor black men built on their property.

    People still looking to benefit fabulously from the imprisonment of poor black men.

    If the governments had any sense they should have compulsorily acquired any lands, and paid not a cent for it, since a prison is regarded as a public purpose.

    People are trafficked and white people benefit. People are enslaved and white people benefit. People are imprisoned and white people still desire to benefit?

    When will it end?

    My family has been denied permission to develop land too and you don’t see us crying and becoming homicidally bitter. Nope. Because we know that it is only money, and we are ALWAYS capable of earning more and more and more and more.

    So let the land go into bush for 3 generations now.

    And this generation of politicians will be long dead and we and our children and our children’s children will still be here.

    You are hilarious. I completely agree that “Canada is one of the best countries in the world.” It is also deeply racist. The two facts coexist even if your mind cannot compass them.

    My maternal grandmother and grandfather emigrated to Toronto in the early part of the 20th century… that is how I come to be born Canadian despite being born in the UK and growing up in Barbados. Interesting fact: that grandmother was White and grandfather Black. They emigrated to Canada because Barbados of that era was so racist and sexist that although White men screwed Black women all the time, the community could not deal with a White woman marrying a Black man. So if your own Bajan lineage includes the Wards or Goodings, It is likely that we are distant cousins through my grandmother.

    I don’t know whether to visualize you in a clown costume or a KKK hood when you think that you would ever have occasion to tip me. I am not one of those still forced to work on the plantation for your tips, kind sir.
