At the outset of the Coronavirus crisis in this country, the Hon. Prime Minister, Mia Mottley, hosted a consultation with members of the Social Partnership and me at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, to plan strategy for fighting this threat. I was impressed and congratulated her on the approach. I then went on to say to her that this was not a time for political controversy and that all sides must come together to defeat this scourge.

Rather than busy itself with measures to protect the people of this country, some twelve days after the consultation, Government rushed to Parliament and passed legislation that was already on the books, to manage the ensuing crisis. In essence, that legislation amended the Emergency Management Act by re-enacting certain provisions that already existed at section 28 of the same act; also at sections 2 and 3 of the 1939 Emergency Powers Act; and at section 25 of the Constitution. The amendment also went on to give powers to the Chief Medical Officer that he already had since 1969.

Needless to say, those initial steps did not give me any confidence that Government was capable of handling the situation, however I remained quiet hoping that somehow that they would get it right. I’ve tried to hold my peace but the situation has now reached a stage that I am compelled to speak-up before these bunglers unintentionally kill us all.

The handling of this crisis has been plagued with the bungling that is now characteristic of anything that this administration touches. So far, were are told that there is no evidence of any community spread of the virus. But it would seem that the end result of the Government’s initiatives would lead to what we fear most. What did the Government think would happen when it gave one day’s notice of a 24-hour curfew? As was reasonably foreseeable, people rushed to supermarkets in their thousands, ignoring any suggestion of physical or social distancing. Take some sobering time to imagine what could have happened if there were any carriers of the Coronavirus in those lines?

As if Government fails to learn from its mistakes, post offices were opened for a limited period in order to allow pensioners to cash their National Insurance pension cheques. The foreseeable result happened: hundreds of vulnerable persons throng the post offices thereby creating an incubator for the spread of the Coronavirus.

This virus is deadly and Government must come up with a series of measures that would protect the people of this country. These hit or miss initiatives just will not do.

  2. But they did suck it up and did the RIGHT THING, extended the hours to ease congestion…and ah know that is what IS KILLING YOU…

…ya want to see ya own people suffer and always in misery, but this is a long lasting MUTATING plague, they are not even sure if they will get a vaccine anytime soon or ever..

…..so, have you thought yet what will happen if things TAKE A TURN…and ya end up right back in Barbados….under another government where ya fowl status WONT MEAN SQUAT..

forward thinking never hurt anyone yet…

They should look at opening supermarkets normal hours, but what do i know..

… if they had not shut down the supermarkets for 2 WHOLE WEEKS…they would not now be looking DUMB ENUFF…lol

    Miller…the genieasses…lol

  5. Yeap i notice that they have extended the hours
However if the lines remain longer the purpose of avoiding the heat would have been defeated
Any how better a start of something than nothing even though it might take a death of some one in the heat before govt realised that tge alphabet soup strategy is the big problem

  6. No you fool! It is not that I didn’t want my people to get food, I didnt and don’t want to see mass infection of my people as supermarkets are high risk areas for COVID. This is why I have stayed away from them. I am happy that they have reopened and so far no cases have been recorded linked to in store shopping. Stop the melodrama, not a fella starved, is starving or will starve because of the closure or partial reopening. You may have the last LIE. #twistmout

  7. Enuff u say that supermarkets are high risk of infections
Which makes for the asking does govt have any intention of testing the super market workers and what measures.or laws have govt put in place to make owners of these supermarkets provide a safe environment for the workers against the virus

  8. But the more salient issue is that DURING THE RE-ENACTMENT OF ALREADY EXISTING LAWS a law that ceded all power to the Prime Minister WAS SLIPPED IN CONTRARY TO THE PROCEDURES.

And it is this that Senator Caswell Franklyn is saying is Unconstitutional!!!

Why use this opportunity that is a national Emergency to subvert the Constitution of Barbados?

That is the main issue here nothing else!

  9. @Piece the NOT SO Prophet

Admit your defeat at last. While New York City and London are burning and corpses with tubes on their bodies are buried like dogs, everything goes its regular course in Barbados. The Bajan way.

And nobody gets arrested in Barbados for exercising their constitutional rights. We have the greatest possible freedom of expression. On other islands, they would have locked you up long ago.

Little details like shopping in supermarkets are completely irrelevant. Our government is doing a brilliant job in the fight against Corona.

By the end of May at the latest, Parliament will unanimously declare Mia Mottley a national superhero. We should introduce a $1,000 bill with her portrait on it. Her birthday should become a new national holiday. In the future the parents will name their daughters Mia. Out of sheer gratitude.

  10. TAKE NOTE BARBADOS

Under the cover of a pandemic, China is dismantling Hong Kong’s last freedoms

In one fell swoop, more than a dozen veteran titans of Hong Kong’s democracy movement were arrested on Saturday (April 18) for their roles in last year’s large-scale protests. While the government has been detaining opposition figures with increasing frequency—including an ominous midnight arrest of a local councillor on charges of sedition—the weekend’s mass arrest is unprecedented in scale and prominence, and signals a major step-up in China’s crackdown on the city’s opposition movement. The arrests came as China is just starting to emerge from its first wave of the coronavirus epidemic, newly triumphant about its success in quickly containing the outbreak while countries around the world—notably Western democracies—continue to struggle with mounting fatalities and overwhelmed medical systems.

“The second issue of lockdown is that it’s making the public scared to engage with healthcare. People are avoiding going to GPs and hospitals because they believe there is so much infection there that they might catch it [coronavirus]. That’s really damaging.”

Figures show that more than 80 extra deaths are occurring every day in London alone before paramedics reach the victims because patients are reluctant to phone for an ambulance in case they catch the virus in hospital.

Professor Heneghan said the decision to abandon mass-testing and contact tracing had “completely failed” elderly people.

  17. By Andre Haynes April 17, 2020

The number of confirmed cases of novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Guyana has risen to 63, with 18 new cases being recorded in this week alone, Public Health Minister Volda Lawrence announced this afternoon.

In an update, Lawrence said the numbers are climbing rapidly and urged persons against holding any gatherings now that the weekend is here.
The latest number represents an increase of six over the 57 cases that had been recorded by the end of Thursday. So far, six persons have died due to the disease.

  19. GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) — The death toll from the coronavirus – COVID-19, in Guyana has risen to seven.
The Ministry of Public Health on Sunday confirmed that one person who tested positive, died at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation’s intensive care unit.

In an update on Saturday, the ministry had indicated that there were five people in the ICU.

The first case of COVID-19 that was registered here on March 11 was imported by a 52-year-old woman who had travelled from New York to Guyana.

To date, ^^^a total of 305 individuals have been tested*** with 242 of those testing negative.

Human beings evolved near to the equator. ALL human beings lived near to the equator for the first 2 million years or so. We human beings are well adapted to heat.

Cold countries are more dangerous to human survival than hot ones. My dad used to say that he loved Barbados because it is one of those places where one can sleep outdoors for 365 days per year without suffering harm from the weather.

Sunshine strengthens the bones. My dad fell out of bed in his 90’s got up went back to bed and worked on the land next morning.

Can anybody who has long lived in the cold do that?

    Sun is good.

    Ask my friend miller.

You are a hypocrite AND I WILL TELL YOU WHY!

The substantive issue in this blog is the constitutional change

The same Constitution that you were ranting about with the DLP with Cahill and everything else.

In this 1500 item blog you mek one RH comment which was to try to negate what Caswell Franklyn was saying!

But he slam dunk your ass!

But this suits your purpose cause you know that your site has endless Covid-19 topics to add that non germane statistic to.

I have seen you close down close to 20 topics here on BU cause they were off topic.

Yet, every constitution related issue de ole man mek, you steupsing

But you doing you job cause a real patriot would be concerned bout what his so called friend Caswell Franklyn was saying.

How about a consulting job with OSA at LIAT? Or for his failed mission at GECOM? OSA left such a huge wreckage field in Guyana. He euthanized the Guyanese so much after the election that the count is now said to take 156 days. Yeah, 156 days, not hours.

    @ Tron ye older Sexton,

De ole man will explain the strategy to you cause you are a man who understands these things.

In advertising you a told that a marketing campaign is working when your sales generates profit.

The campaign manager must be aware of and decide what KPIs matter for their campaign, and what their goals are.

Now that you understand that baseline info you need to comprehend what Barbados Underground is AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, WHAT 1550 POSTS MEAN!

Chechen ALL THE OTHER POSTS HERE and their comment count!

Dat be Senator Caswell Franklyn’s currency!

    Rising 3rd Party Movement Champion!

Now, what does happen with Piece the Legend ‘s posts?

    Every time I post?

    I does get censored!

    Why dat?

“…Norwegian human rights activists protest in front of the Saudi Arabian embassy in Oslo to call for the freedom of imprisoned Saudi blogger Raif Badawi…”

Why is Raif feared and censored and imprisoned?

Why can you say with such certainty that I would be locked up if in another Caribbean country?

Because my court jester de ole man is hated and feared!

But the censorship shows that I am feared more than I am hated.

And why is de ole man feared Jester Tron?

Because I am perceived as a powerful internet dissident and

“…by controlling the internet, ruling parties can quash dissident activity and monitor online communications…”

This is what governments do Jester Tron!

Governments quash the internet (AND PAY ITS AGENTS OF DISINFORMATION) because it it imperative that they extend a greater hold over what people say and do, and in this case of Constitutional Subversion, Mugabe is seeking to destroy how she can be dislodged in the coming years!

    You cant remove a dictator.

So, this digital censorship gine be de ole man lot.

And if you start hitting too hard you gine going me like Senator Franklyn did yesterday heheheheh

To be among the wealthiest half of the world last year, an adult needed to own only $3,210 in net assets (minus debts), according to the data. To be in the top 10 percent, a person needed to have only $68,800 in wealth. To be in the top percentile, the threshold climbed to $760,000, according to Credit Suisse.

Well…… according to Credit Suisse I am way into the top 10 percent. It really does not take much. The real wealth is concentrated at the very top.

It shocked me to find this out a few years ago while reading my Words for Today devotional book.. It made me look at my life with a new appreciation. I had very little to complain about when compared to most of the world’s people. I have never needed something and not be able to have it. I have had much more than I needed all my life. And wonder of wonders I had more than most people in the world!

Well dog my cat! I am not in the top 25 % but in the top 10!

Oh dear! That’s another ASS-umption released!

  33. @ Baje

Have you noticed everytime you try to critique any social policy programme in Barbados the first thing the BU warriors do defensively is compare Barbados with some other nation, usually the US, Canada or quit e often the UK?
They cannot seem to defend a policy based on its own principles and appropriateness. It is irritating, but like a constant itch. Or there are those who want to prove t hey are more Barbadian than others.
I call it the Boris Johnson/ Donald Trump syndrome: The New York-born, Turkish Boris Johnson wants to prove more British than the ret of us; and the Scottish/German Trump wants to be more American.
Just look at the chaotic incompetence over social distancing, the curfew and shopping. These highly educated and equally highly paid politicians and advisers cannot even organise a simple roster.
The purpose is to restrict contagion, therefore social distance is important; we also need to enforce the curfew, except for essentials and emergencies; and, we are concerned for vulnerable groups. Time management is the first thing any young executive learns.
When then can’t we organise a basic system that meets all these requirements yet minimise inconvenience to the general public? Is this world class? Or punching above our weight? Why can’t they let supermarkets stay open during their normal trading times, or even restricted trading times, but long enough to meet demand?
By the way, what is really wrong with the president? Since her medical procedure she has only shown her head to announce the names of two of her so far unannounced CoVid-19 economic committee. Is she more seriously ill than we are told.
It is unusual for any one undergoing serious surgery to be kept in bed for six weeks. Cancer patient, heart attack victims, etc are all usually out of hospital with a week, two at most, and are fully fit to return to work within a month. Are we being told everything?

  34. Police say they are not seeking to antagonise the public in relation to pulling over people at night during the COVID-19 curfew.

As part of measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus, only essential workers are supposed to be on the roads at night. However, some of them complained of being unsure if the unmarked vehicles and plain-clothes officers were real and not “fake cops”, giving rise to fears of potential robbery or worse.
It has resulted in people going on social media declaring they would drive to the nearest police station first as well as asking the police how they would feel if it were their families being pulled over at night.
Though police public relations officer, Acting Inspector Rodney Inniss, had responded previously to the matter, he said he wanted to make it crystal clear it was not a situation of police being insensitive. He said they had a job to do and intended to do it in the proper way, where their presence would be reassuring instead of causing fear. (Quote)

This is stubbornness, and a refusal to re-think a flawed policy. Note they have not answered the sensible questions asked. But it I the Bajan Condition all over again. Note he even calls it a sensible policy. Where is the commissioner? Where is the attorney general? Where is the prime minister/acting prime minister? Where are the opposition spokespeople? The silence is a mark of conspiracy.

  35. Bajans are illiterate, we are buffoons, we are stupid,we suffer from something called a bajan condition and to top it off Barbados is a failed state.

What do you expect if you frame all of your opinions through this mindset? Here is what will happen – proud BARBADIANS living on the rock will take umbrage and cuss your rugby loving rh.

  36. “It is not that I didn’t want my people to get food,”

We have not SEEN NOR HEARD about ONE INFECTION linked to any supermarket ANYWHERE in the WORLD that KEPT THEIR SUPERMARKETS OPEN, they people wore masks and gloves, the smarter ones wore hats so the disease does not lodge in their hair, there is no way infection can spread from a visit to the supermarket if all protocols for protection are followed ….but am the LIAR and FOOL….lol…ya just a rotating, wind up fowl, all the shite ministers gotta do is wind you up and set you loose on the blog, now that ya have very little else to do…

People now need to USE THEIR BRAINS and start their own businesses, be creative, this is the time to do it, greedy, sell out ministers will find it difficult to stop you or sell you out or TIEF YA INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY..

… the lowlifes for business people are trying to arrange to cut salaries in half, but will expect the same hours and there is no guarantee they will want to RETURN TO THE PREVIOUS LOW SALARY ARRANGEMENTS…ergo….slavery again, the lowest pay CUT IN HALF for the same working hours….watch the greeedy, wicked slave masters wannbe trash…..

then there are the TOURISM PIMPS….because that is all they can think about, they can see nothing else…and would gladly reduce their own people to even less than slaves to keep up the tourism facade, grow your food and create your own livelihood IT IS QUITE POSSIBLE….TUNE THE TOURISM PIMPS OUT AND LET THEM SELL THEIR ASSES TO TOURISTS…they are repulsive and despicable…..and do not mean their own people well, dont want you to progress or become wealthy…just look at their track records, all these sell out negros see their own people as are servers, gardeners and maids….start being creative and build your own empires….and give the SELL OUTS THE MIDDLE FINGER…let them import chinese to be slaves for tourists…

“I feel fit as a fiddle notwithstanding my CNCD’s.

    Sun is good”

anything is good in SMALL DOSES .

…..to avoid the crowds while standing in long lines UNNECESSARILY during a protracted length in the heat and humidity which is not good for the for anyone’s health, let alone the elderly…no matter how healthy they are….just because you may be able to do it, not every healthy elderly will be the same…..a delivery service is essential for these and all other times, not every day a healthy elderly person will feel healthy enough to do their own shopping etc.

I have no health problems outside of manmade and i cannot stand for protracted periods in heat and humidity…

  37. But David you criticize Hal for the name calling but you and others indulge in more of the same
The name calling is a bajan condition and bajans are notorious for calling people illiterate stupid ignorant and idiots
Bajans have a perception of knowing it all even when danger strikes them in the face
The biggest targets to be caught in the bulls eye of bajans nastiness are the overseas bajans whom are targeted if they dare say anything negative about the island
Reason why most living overseas never say anything good or bad when it comes to the politics of barbados
The few who does across social media gives their opinions from a lens of what they see and what improvements are necessary for the country
So yes plenty criticisms would be given but it is obvious criticisms bajans at home rather not want to hear

    #blogmasterisatruetruebajan

  39. The ministry of health keep giving updates on COVID data that is lifted from numbers taken from people who were tested and quarantine and scheduled for release
Those COVID daily updates are false and misleading and only represent a small percentage of the total population
While the reality lies in the testing of those not tested in the general population especially those in the epicentre of carrying out their duties as front line workers or essential workers
Once again govt and govt officials have failed to tell the truth but rather issue half truths to sooth and massage a gullible public looking for light at the end of the tunnel
    Buyer beware
