Pauline Benjamin – Principal, Springer Memorial Secondary School

BU will not write too much about this except to beg for urgent divine intervention. As adults we are morally and legally bound to be caretakers of our children. What has transpired so far at Springer Memorial School involving a minor and a student is an indictment on all of us. All of us.

The emotional scaring that continues to accrue to this child begs for an immediate intervention from someone, any bloody one. Are we a society? Are we focussed only on the economy? What say you Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart? You boasted how you had to intervene to resolve the Alexandra issue. Do something! Rescue your minister Ronald Jones, AGAIN.ย  We await the management style you will select to resolve this issue. You are the prime minister you know.

Police respond to incident involving Springer student

POLICE WERE CALLED in at the Springer Memorial Secondary School this morning when the saga surrounding the 14-year-old schoolgirl took another turn.

The child and her mother, Elecia Weekes, have been involved in a disciplinary row with the principal, which has resulted in her being out of the classroom for almost eight weeks.

Weekes called the police after she said her daughter was escorted to the gates by principal Pauline Bellamy and asked to take off her uniform. She has refused a transfer to Ellerslie Secondary and was told by Bellamy last week that the child is no longer on the roll at Springer and would be trespassing if she returned.

Police from District โ€œAโ€ responded and advised the family, which is being supported by childrenโ€™s rights advocate Shelly Ross, to take the matter to the Ministry of Education. They are now awaiting word on when they will be able to meet with chief education officer Karen Best. (YB)

  1. And for those who mistaken believe that the United States does better and is a beacon of justice here are the facts:

    http://www.naacp.org/pages/criminal-justice-fact-sheet

From 1980 to 2008, the number of people incarcerated in America quadrupled-from roughly 500,000 to 2.3 million people

Today, the US is 5% of the World population and has 25% of world prisoners.

African Americans now constitute nearly 1 million of the total 2.3 million incarcerated population

African Americans are incarcerated at nearly six times the rate of whites

One in six black men had been incarcerated as of 2001. If current trends continue, one in three black males born today can expect to spend time in prison during his lifetime

1 in 100 African American women are in prison

Nationwide, African-Americans represent 26% of juvenile arrests, 44% of youth who are detained, 46% of the youth who are judicially waived to criminal court, and 58% OF THE YOUTH ADMITTED TO STATE PRISONS (Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice).

Dear Well Well and others: Tell me that I lie or tell the national Association for the Advancement of Colored People that they lie.

Just your backward recourse is proof enough Simple Simon…….not one of you is seeing that the child who actually threw the wrapper on the ground has now been socialized to believe that she can continue to litter the school at will, because someone else will be blamed for it, “disciplined” for her actions and expelled for her actions….she is now socialized to believe that she can litter the whole island and someone else will have to clean her garbage, just as all the people who are littering discriminately across the island have been socialized for decades.

Just like the dude I was walking behind right next to a hotel who drank his soda and tossed the bottle right in the garden of the hotel, you know why he is still doing so as a grown man, because he was socialized in the schools to believe that someone else is responsible for picking up his garbage.

Cause and effect…if you are not too backward to relate to social issues and define them.

  3. Does anyone remember the word: discipline? It goes to show you how the child was raised, to reply with such language to a teacher to simply pickup a wrapper. We were taught as children to respect our superiors. Those kinda of contempt actions used to require suspension for a certain period, along with parent counseling. Since the parent has escalated the situation remembering the old saying: “Be careful what you ask for, you just may get it”.

  4. FIRED THE PRINCIPLE? Better still impeach Ronald Jones NOW! And as to that son of a BITCH we call a Stu-pid-ity…(he does doan say NUTTING)…get rid of he too

  5. We will note that no private secondary school has stepped forward and offered to educate this child.

Surely any one of the private secondary schools, Anglican, Catholic, Muslim, non-denominational can accommodate one more child?

I wonder why none of them have offered to suffer this little child and let her come unto them?

Maybe because they expect their students to comply with reasonable school rules?

Maybe because they don’t want to deal with stupid bombastic parents?

  6. Details of the โ€œbad experience or what transpired with Weekes’ son were NOT reveled. So far the only information in the public domain relative to her son (as revealed by her) was that her son had a bad experience at Ellerslie.

โ€œHowever, Elecia Weekes said she would have none of it, claiming her son, who attended that school, had a bad experience there in the past.โ€ [Barbados Today, February 3, 2016]

So, because the ladyโ€™s son had a problem at another school, in the absence of supporting evidence or knowledge of what transpired, gives you or anyone the right to PRESUMPTUOUSLY suggest or state for a FACT that โ€œshe raised rude and disrespectful children who BOTH seem to carry the tell tales signs of arrogance also demonstrated in the motherโ€™s altitude.โ€

Do you know what problem Weekesโ€™ son encountered at the school? How do you if he was rude? How do you know if it was not a case of him being bullied?

The parent as eell as the school and ministry are getting just what they deserve right now. Do you see your leaders having respect for anyone and they too went to the schools in Barbados and were disciplined, all in the same manner.

Simple the US hss 1/4 billion people, say what you want, there are many different ways a situation such as that one would be handled to the satisfaction of everyone.

Prison in the US is a money making venture….I will post the new age evil associated with imprisoning black people, you cannot compare a 2×4 island filled with incompetent leaders with.
Meet Annie Dookhan, the Government Chemist Who Purposefully Sent Thousands of Innocent Americans to Prison

    Like our page: Trini Entertainment

In 2013, Massachusetts state chemist, Annie Dookhan, pled guilty to falsifying the results of over 40,000 drug tests that ultimately sent thousands of innocent Americans to prison. It has been more than four years since Dookhanโ€™s crimes were uncovered, and yet numerous people are still locked away because of her corruption, many of which have no idea she was the one who brought about their horrid fate.

In this report by Filming Cops:

Imagine being locked in a cell and knowing youโ€™re innocent. Imagine how youโ€™d feel as you watch the prime years of your life taken away from you โ€” all because of a vicious government chemist, along with the low-IQ cops who willingly enforce the corrupt โ€œwar on drugs.โ€

Dookhan had intentionally forged signatures and tampered with evidence to further both her career, as well as many prosecutors who she had close relations with. She would also invent fanciful job titles for herself, such as โ€œspecial agent of operationsโ€ and โ€œon-call terrorism supervisor,โ€ and would then testify in court as an โ€œexpert.โ€

Prosecutors adored Dookham, referring to her as being a part of their โ€œdream team,โ€ and even taking her out for drinks. In one email with a prosecutor, Dookham said she wouldnโ€™t be able to give her โ€œexpert testimony,โ€ to which the prosecutor replied, โ€œNo no no!!! I need you!!!โ€

An email provided by the Boston Globe shows the close friendship Dookhan had with one particular prosecutor by the name of George Papachristos:

โ€œGlad we are on the same team,โ€ he once wrote Dookhan โ€” including one day in May 2010 when he told her he needed a marijuana sample to weigh at least 50 pounds so that he could charge the owners with drug trafficking.

โ€œAny help would be greatly appreciated!โ€ he wrote, punctuating each sentence with a long string of exclamation points. โ€œThank you!โ€

Two hours later, Dookhan responded: โ€œOK . . . definitely Trafficking, over 80 lbs.โ€ ยญPapachristos thanked her profusely.

Dookhan had sent another email to Papachristos in which she told him she needed a man โ€œto love me and make me laugh.โ€ In other words, some of her victims went to prison because she had a crush on their prosecutor, and what an interesting prison story that makes; what are you in for? A hormonal chemist who was hoping to get laid.

Norfolk County District Attorney, Michael Morrissey, has been set on the task of reviewing thousands of files to determine who was wrongfully prosecuted.

โ€œI donโ€™t think anyone ever perceived that one person was capable of causing this much chaos,โ€ Morrissey stated. โ€œYou can see the entire walls full of boxesโ€ฆ in one of these cardboard boxes, there could be hundreds of casesโ€ฆ in each box.โ€

What does Dookhan have to say for herself?

โ€œI screwed up big time. I messed up. I messed up bad. Itโ€™s my fault. I donโ€™t want the lab to get in trouble.โ€

After sending countless victims to prison, many of which have been behind bars for years, she was only given a three to five year sentence. Anthony Benedetti, chief counsel of the state public defender agency, stated:

โ€œSadly, the saga continues for the thousands of individuals who have borne the impact of Dookhanโ€™s misdeeds, and the labโ€™s scandalous management.โ€

So when you try to compare a 2×4 island filled with incompetence to situations in the US which has many variables your ignorance shows….Simple.

When you can show me the leaders in Barbados who were socialized in that same environment as that child having more discipline than her, more respect than her etc, then you have an argument, otherwise you have nothing to back up your half baked theories.

  8. Once the mother has been offered a place for the child and refuses to send the child to school then the child is living in an abusive situation and she should be removed from her mother’s care (and her mother prosecuted) and placed with a relative who will ensure that she goes to school (daddy I am pointing my finger at you here. Where art thou?) or she can be placed with a foster parent who will ensure that she goes to school. I volunteer here, as I’ve done it before and truly it is not difficult. We must remember that parents do NOT OWN their children, and that children can, should and must be removed from parents who cause a child harm, such as a denial of education.

I’ve never said to a child “Get up and go to school” and had a refusal.

    I got de charm.

    I got de time.

    I got de love.

    I got de discipline.

    I got de experience.

Art…the newspapers also said that the lady’s son is employed, lives and works in Canada, everybody bypassed that info because it does not fit into their nasty little agendas of demonizing the child and her mother, they do not want to hear about any success stories related to the mother…they are all socialized to be vindictive, judgemental, bullying a–holes.

    @ Well, Well

Although I do not condone indiscipline in schools or by extension within the entire society, the amazing thing about this entire matter is that the individual who ACTUALLY โ€œcommitted the crimeโ€ of littering continues to enjoy their education without the level of publicity, stress and criticism this girl has undergone during the past few weeks.

This entire scenario is a reflection of our society. The same ones who, for political reasons, are pillorying the student were seen on BU condoning and defending politicians pulling guns in the precincts of parliament, referring to women as โ€œbald pooch cats,โ€ or they could โ€œrun down Broad Street naked,โ€ a PM basically calling union leaders โ€œterrorists,โ€ or calling a thief is his โ€œnon-leper friend,โ€ and exposing information from a womanโ€™s personal file because she asked about her severance payment.

  16. I am appalled and embarrassed by the comments and the arguments put forward by most contributors to this topic. It clearly shows that we have wasted millions of dollars on education over several decades. Where is the analysis in all of this all we are having is a lot of senior citizens (I too am a senior citizen) spewing garbage all over the subject.
The facts as gleamed from the newspaper are:-
    1. Last term (Christmas term) the year head told the young lady to move the wrapper from the class room. She refused. ( Anyone who has children will tell you that a child is quick to tell you he/she did not put it there)
    2. YEAR-HEAD runs to principal. Why is she year head again since she cannot solve the smallest of problems no admin skills what so ever. If she felt the young lady was โ€˜rudeโ€ she could have given her a detention. Nooo! she runs to the principal.
    3. Young lady tells principal she did not put the wrapper on the floor and her mother did not send her to school to pick up garbage. So is she incorrect?
    4. Principal suspends her for A WEEK last term which was taken.
    5. She returns to school on January 5 2016 principal instructs her to pick up the garbage in the auditorium after students have had lunch WHY??????? Wasnโ€™t she already punished? Was it to embarrass the young lady?? And if so WHY?
    6. The student refused rightfully.
    7. She is told to sit on a bench outside guidance officer area and not allowed to attend her classes. WHY?
    8. What has this young lady done to be treated so badly? Because she dares to stand up for her rights. Are we raising children or sheep?
    9. The Year-head, the Principal, the Chief Education Officer, the Ministry of Education and the Minister of Education have all bundled this whole affair. And to think all the players are this affair are or were teachers who are we really entrusting with the education and well-being of our children?
    10. The Motherโ€™s only crime is in wanting the best and what is fair for her daughter as any good parent would do.

See now…I was not even aware of all those details, now I withdraw any and all criticsm of the mother…..you people who would condone that bullying and demoralizing of a 14 year old girl are all repugnant, you disgust me with your conventional and combined social mental sicknesses and pretence of respectability..how could you, no one can do that to your child, but you would visit that vicious behavior of stripping dignity from a 14 year old girl.

You are no different from the nasty students who litter the Springer school and are allowed to do so by the principal and teachers without consequences….yuk

Simple Simon….go rest your tired self and stop trying to push your stupid archaic beliefs on those who are quite capable of thinking for themselves.

Art…it’s frightening this pack mentality that adults have on the island, not about what is right, but what they want and think should happen, just because that is how it was done in their long over days.

It’s horrible the nasty things adults got on here and said about this child and her mother, I bet not one of them have the duscipline, manners or respect to now apoligize to the child or her mother for their nasty comments but expect both child and mother to show respect to the jackasses made up of prinipal, teacher, Ronald Jones, the whole ministry of education……these people are demons…

  19. IS THIS CORRECT.

“4. Principal suspends her for A WEEK last term which was taken.

If you had read my post at 2:19…you would see one of the variables involved in why so many blacks are imprisoned in the US and which has nothing to do with your self-inspired, regurgitated nonsense.

Simple…as I said and after seeing more details of what transpired with this child at Springer school,, let me see how much respect, decency, discipline you and the other mad posters have and if you are now grown up enough to apologize to this mother and child for all the nasty things you said about them…..let’s really see how you and others on here were disciplined and socialized at your “good schools”.

  22. Remember Ronald Jones said there will be zero tolerance for bullying in schools I wonder how he plans to deal with the bullies in the school system when some of the biggest bullies are some teachers. I say some because we cannot paint every-one with the same brush for there are some excellent ones still around.

  23. Well Well & Consequences Avatar
    Well Well & Consequences

Watching….Jones is the biggest bully, unlike us, he would have the details of this child’s belittlement at the hands of the principal, teachers and ministry officials, yet he had not one ounce of sympathy or empthy for this child and dictated which schools she should be banished to, the mother was well within her rights to refuse any placement but that which she wants.

These people are vile….they have totally victimized this child…I now agree with those outside of Barbados, the leaders have to be held accountable one way or the other for abuse of children on the island, led by the leaders and the schools.

I had one run in with Jones re a relative, one time I was in Barbados, I had to show him who is what…because he has never had to deal with someone like me…… it seems since then it’s down hill for him all the way. He should never never never be minister of education…..this made me feel sick to my stomach.

    Excellent contribution at 3:00 pm

But who corroborated most of the “facts” which you summarized? Were these facts checked or were they all provided by one side of the controversy? Were they admitted or disputed by the opposing side? Did the newspaper reporters even attempt to find out the views of the other side?

Do we really know all the minutiae of this whole brouhaha?

Did the writer of the article in the newspapers ascertain the reason why the year head passed the problem on to the Principal?

Did the writer also try to understand why the principal (who Caswell considered to be a progressive teacher prior to this incident but changed that view in the light of the uncorroborated, incomplete facts of this case) would have got involved? Why would an otherwise progressive teacher act to add insult to injury? Did the article writers seek to illuminate this glaring anomaly?

Did the writer seek to explain how long the young lady was “in punishment” ? Most of the commenters etc and newspaper articles talk about 8 weeks out of school. Why? Is this a further example of the quality of our journalism at the Nation and Barbados Today?

You admit that you did not know why the headmistress would prescribe further punishment on the young lady when she returned to school from the Christmas holidays, by virtue of asking why a number of times in the section discussing that aberration.

It appears to be such an egregious and uncalled for punishment that some explanation from the headteacher must have been necessary before condemning her outright.

It appears that the Teachers, the MoE and officialdom in this case made a horrible mistake but it also seems that we are hearing only one side of the story.

Perhaps someone, in addition to Curious, who does not seem to be a true insider, as far as the MOE and the Teachers are concerned, should take it on themselves to leak the position of the other side to the BU family.

As it is, given your timeline and points, the Ministry and the Teachers obviously must stand condemned but I think justice requires that the other side should be heard and the two sides weighed before we jump to conclusions.

โ€œAnd the principal has authority granted her by the law.โ€

Ah! And there is where we can agree. The long debate on your part has finally found confluence with commonsense and reason; not emotional rubbish from your halcyon school days when teachers (especially headmasters in those days) ruled in dictatorial fashion; some even displaying tendencies of sadistic megalomania.

It is the LAW (Not any teacher’s whim and fancy) that provides the framework for the disciplining and appropriate punishing of children and to curtail the temperamental excesses, sometimes involving abuse and brutality.

So tell us, SS the Arbiter of discipline in schools, which infringement of the school rules did the child commit to warrant disciplinary procedures provided under the Law, both local and according to international conventions.

How come we are not hearing you and your ilk demanding that the Law be adhered when it comes to capital punishment? Why are the people who took other peopleโ€™s lives and found guilty to be hanged are not receiving their just desserts?
Why are you attacking and imposing a form of moral opprobrium equivalent to capital punishment on the poor child, her mother and absentee father? Why donโ€™t you check the most recent census and see how many โ€œmarriedโ€ households are in Barbados? Is the Prime Minister or his de facto deputy executive paragons of your ideal mummy daddy and two children household?

Everyone of the posters who were breathing fire totally ignored the rights of the child, with the utmost glee. That type of attitude towards children’s rights makes the environment on the island very hostile to children’s wellbeing and mental stability.

Please do not misrepresent anything that I wrote. I said that over time the principal morphed into a monster. Morph suggests that it was a slow process. I certainly did not make my observations based on one incident, even though this one is particularly bad.

You recall that I referred to the Education Regulations which gave a principal the power to suspend up to a maximum of 10 days. Thereafter the principal must refer the matter to the board if he/she believes that the initial punishment was inadequate. Where is the board in all of this?

There are rules for pupils and also rules for principals. From the information available to me, it would appear that the wrong person was punished.

  39. @NorthernObserver

You are so correct, conflict resolution. And imagine this occurred in a learning institution, the irony.

  40. So the mother claims she did not receive any letter confirming the transfer.
Question mom..did you receive a letter advising you that the child should return to springer? Was it not of your own request not to have your child attend springer because of the issue?
Then why would as a concern parent and as one who boast about what is best for the child would you want to impose an enviroment that would be cause of concern for the childs best interest and forego other offers for the education of your child?
You see mom as this issue unfolds your are allowing the public to have a birds eye view of what it is like to be beligerant confrontational with a confused and an indisciplined mind.

  41. As reported the mother did not signed the transfer document to permit the child to go to Ellerslie therefore she remains a student of Springer Memorial until the matter is resolved. There is a legal issue the mother has responded to and that is to make sure her daughter attends the school she is enrolled.

  42. The BUT and the BSTU are always quick to defend teachers’ rights.

Where is the BUT or the BSTU in all of this?

Can we dare to imagine what would have been the reaction of the unions had a principal sought to impose something like this on any teacher?

  43. Every year after the CE exam, the loud and obnoxious Minister tells parents at the press conference………accept the schools to which your children have been allocated…………….. there will be no transfers.

Passing strange that they could find a place to transfer this child so quickly.

The Ministry officials have to hide as the parent was told early on by an official that the child was within its rights not the pick up garbage.

  44. ” instructs her to pick up the garbage in the auditorium after students have had lunch”

WHO USUALLY PICKS UP GARBAGE AFTER THE CHILDREN HAVE HAD LUNCH ?

Is it “normal” for teachers to tell students to pick up wrappers?

  45. 46. No! No! The mother throws a monkey wrench at her disposal at evey move after stating that she wants a transfer then stating she did not sign.then stating she did not receive a letter. It is obvious that the mom is trying to play games with the system at her own peril .in the meanwhile her child suffers
Her child would have been back in school had not for the mom antics .The child was not put on indefinite suspension. Every moment after the first suspension was instigated by the mother causing longer delay
