Pauline Benjamin – Principal, Springer Memorial Secondary School

BU will not write too much about this except to beg for urgent divine intervention. As adults we are morally and legally bound to be caretakers of our children. What has transpired so far at Springer Memorial School involving a minor and a student is an indictment on all of us. All of us.

The emotional scaring that continues to accrue to this child begs for an immediate intervention from someone, any bloody one. Are we a society? Are we focussed only on the economy? What say you Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart? You boasted how you had to intervene to resolve the Alexandra issue. Do something! Rescue your minister Ronald Jones, AGAIN.ย  We await the management style you will select to resolve this issue. You are the prime minister you know.

Police respond to incident involving Springer student

POLICE WERE CALLED in at the Springer Memorial Secondary School this morning when the saga surrounding the 14-year-old schoolgirl took another turn.

The child and her mother, Elecia Weekes, have been involved in a disciplinary row with the principal, which has resulted in her being out of the classroom for almost eight weeks.

Weekes called the police after she said her daughter was escorted to the gates by principal Pauline Bellamy and asked to take off her uniform. She has refused a transfer to Ellerslie Secondary and was told by Bellamy last week that the child is no longer on the roll at Springer and would be trespassing if she returned.

Police from District โ€œAโ€ responded and advised the family, which is being supported by childrenโ€™s rights advocate Shelly Ross, to take the matter to the Ministry of Education. They are now awaiting word on when they will be able to meet with chief education officer Karen Best. (YB)

  1. Where is the logical thought!

For the sake of argument let us accept the mother is a bombastic idiot and that she 100% wrong. Let us assume she remains an idiot for the next three months. Are some of you suggesting that those vested with the authority to manage education in Barbados do not have the wherewithal to resolve. To borrow from Enuff , piss in muh pocket.

    JAs

  2. @ DIW
Do you think before jumping to your illogical conclusions…?

Being an excellent leader / principal / manager does not in ANY way insulate one from being embroiled in controversies …especially with brass bowl idiots.
Indeed, it is an ATTRACTION for useless failures, who are seeking to attract some kind of attention to themselves.

You seem to be suggesting that doing the RIGHT things means a peaceful, quiet life – free from challenge…… THAT IS SO WRONG as to be laughable…

The way to a QUIET, UNEVENTFUL life would be to let the little loser do exactly as her unemployed mother advised her…. and indeed to allow the OTHER 800 students to follow suit…
The ‘quiet life’ involves turning up to school as scheduled, attending classes as scheduled, … and minding your own damn business …and that of your OWN children.

You may have noticed that 95% of schools in Barbados enjoy a ‘quiet’ life….

You may also have noticed that Springer enjoyed a complete REVERSAL in reputation over the past few years…..
…or perhaps you may NOT have noticed…

    @ Watching
Perhaps Caswell is still smarting from being expelled by the Canadians some years ago for ill discipline…. Careful to understand who you are following …and why….

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Nobody is suggesting such a thing……
We have all KNOWN that for a FACT now …for years….

Were you not here during Ax?
Were you here with Broomes @ Parkinson?
Has the Teachers SBA dispute been addressed?

You seem to be caught napping David…. ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. @de Ingrunt Word February 10, 2016 at 1:18 PM โ€œthe principal forced her to take it offโ€ means that the girl was at school WITHOUT a bra. Because being at Principal where girls attend surely you either send home the child to dress properly or you have some inexpensive standard bras (new of course) on hand for just these situations…Similarly, there is absolutely no way that the comment โ€œthat poor child spent the day being the butt of jokes of mean teachers and other studentsโ€ could be describing that she had her โ€˜relatively largeโ€™ breasts basically โ€œexposedโ€ under her blouse. Nope!”

And what if the child had been instructed multiple previous times not to wear brightly colored bras to school, and what if she insisted on defying the rule against brightly coloured bras? And what if she like this one deliberately disobeyed the rule “because she felt like it”

    What then?

In the jurisdiction where you live what do the schools do with defiant oppositional children and their equally oppositional defiant parents?

  5. @Bush Tea

We have to fair in our comments, this issue has long gone passed the teacher, Principal. This is now between the teacher and the ministry.

  6. @millertheanunnaki February 10, 2016 at 1:03 PM “Why not…sugggest the mother be appointed to the Senate and given the portfolio of Minister for the Environment instead of the current ineffective nasty uncouth blackmouth creature? Better yet why not suggest she runs for a seat in the Lower chamber to replace Maria.”

    No problem Miller etc,

Barbados IS A DEMOCRACY and all that is required for appointment to the Senate, or to be a member of the lower house is that one is a Bajan who is at least 18 years old. You or Caswell can correct me if I am wrong. As such the mother is qualified for appointment to the Senate, and is qualified to seek elective office, and is qualified to be Minister (because as we all know, Ministers do not have to have any particular qualifications or experience, or competence. Lolll!!!)

So as such I have no problem with the mother [and the daughter in 3 years time] seeking appointed or elective office.

That is truly the beauty of democracy.

    And I like um so.

  7. But I am not a member of any party, never have been, never will be therefore I cannot kick start the process, but a good party man like you can do so.

SSSโ€ฆ.donโ€™t know if you followed this from the beginning but you canโ€™t have officials, civil servants bullying you around, transfering your child and you did not sign off on it, even if you asked for the transfer, you should have an opportunity to speak to the same officials and find out from them why they think the school they chose for the girl is the best fit and will her grades continue to improve in a changed environment or if it would be more prudent to leave her at Springer and I would want to know why the hell she is being made to pick up garbage of other children who have no sense of cleanliness for their surroundings. โ€ฆ.I know you will not accept any old crap from a teacher, principal, Jones, none of the idiots in Bim that think so highly of themselves.

In addition, we know the problems on the island, they are even being spoke about in international circlesโ€ฆ.you cannot want change but keep the same nasty dehumanizing practices in place that continue to be passed on from one generation of practitioners to the next, it will never end.

  9. When I went to school, when a student was asked to do a simple task such as picking up a sweetie wrapper there would be immediate compliance. There would therefor not been any need for any punishment at all

I cant imagine a boy at the HC in my day telling a teacher that their parent had not sent them to school to pick up people’s garbage.

After 50 years of so called independence we now have the tail wagging the dog and children and their ignorant parent seeking to run the school and the MOE.

    This is hilarious!

One wonders why the child’s mother is unemployed.

What is clear is that the child’s response is not one that will be favorable in the work force.

  10. @millertheanunnaki February 10, 2016 at 1:03 PM “Better yet why not suggest she runs for a seat in the Lower chamber to replace Maria.”

I’ve always felt that Mara Thompson ought not to have been elected as the representative for St. John, but again that is democracy…even foolish people (in this case the majority of the electorate in St. John) have the right to vote.

  13. @Georgie Porgie February 10, 2016 at 3:12 PM “One wonders why the childโ€™s mother is unemployed.”

It leads one to wonder if she has a nasty attitude and no employer or employee group wants her around.

But please note that miller etc. intends to have his party nominate her to vie to represent the parish of St. John in the next elections.

Either that or miller etc. is being deceitful in his support.

GP…..the child refused to pick up the wrapper, was given a week’s punishment, end of story, returned to school and ordered to pick up garbage in the hall left by other students after they ate…..what was that to prove….tell me.

  15. @Georgie Porgie February 10, 2016 at 3:12 PM “I cant imagine a boy at the HC in my day telling a teacher that their parent had not sent them to school to pick up peopleโ€™s garbage.”

Ahh!!! Georgie Porgie, but that is because the parents of Harrison College students are intelligent people. Even if they are as poor as dirt and only own one pair of underpants the parents are intelligent.

Surely in your practice as a doctor and and as teacher you have noted that stupid parents don’t have intelligent children.

  16. @ Georgie Porgie who wrote “I cant imagine a boy at the HC in my day telling a teacher that their parent had not sent them to school to pick up peopleโ€™s garbage.”

In our day there would have been a resolution within the school. 100 lines in detention or even 2 detentions.

The problem I have with this saga is the incredible ineptitude at all levels.

Seriously….. listen to debates in the house if you want to hear cantankerous..at this point I will stop cause I doan want David to get sue.

But uh must add… lissen to de verbosity of de minstra of edikayshun.

  17. “We have to fair in our comments, this issue has long gone passed the teacher, Principal. This is now between the teacher and the ministry.”
This is a matter that involves: the child, the mother, the principal and the MOE. You cannot seriously remove the child form this matter. She should have her say. In some countries, during divorce proceedings, the judge often asks the children , which parent they prefer to live with. We must come to terms with the rights of the child. Quite frankly, the principal, should be sent on paid leave until this matter is resolved. It is not the child or her mother that should be the target. This child did nothing wrong and her rights were trampled by adults. Time for the child to go back to Springer and continue her right to an education. This high handed attitude of the Chief Education Officer also needs to be investigated. How can a child be transferred without any consultation with the parent/guardian.

  19. That should be the parent and the ministry William. Thanks for the catch.

The issue of the right of the child is not a Barbados thin, it is universal. Sign of the times.

  20. @Gabriel February 10, 2016 at 3:35 PM “GP and Simon(GPS)are out in full force pushing the same argument.”

I did NOT attend Harrison College. Way back then one of the requiements for attendng Harrison College was that the 10 year old child had to have a PENIS.

I did not have a penis and so I was not admitted.

I must admit that my elders and teachers and HC old boys, such as GP, Hants, Bush Tea et al have never been able t explain to me why a 10 year old had to have a penis in order to attend Harrison College.

According to your โ€˜speciousโ€™ reasoning for a non sequitur, it must follow that intelligent parents produce intelligent children.
So who are these intelligent parents in Bim that produced the ‘edicated’ fools that sit in the HoA, except for a very few? Who produced those intelligent people that occupy the halls of bureaucratic power in the Ministry of Education? Who are the parents of the faceless managers that cannot even arrange for the removal of the debris and detritus that reaming for weeks and e ven months on the sidewalks and gutters after the so-called stupid people like the unemployed mother of the victimized schoolgirl have done their โ€˜jobโ€™ of weeding and de-bushing?

Surely Fumble who was raised in a lone parent environment which you detest hasn’t done too badly despite his semi-literate mother’s guidance.

I have not said that I detest lone parents.

Because I do NOT detest lone parents.

I believe that lone parents can successfully parent.

However what I do detest are parents who do not nurture their children.

And in Barbados those parents who bugger off and refuse to parent their children are mostly male.

    I detest dead beat dads.

    I detest absentee dads.

    I detest sperm donors.

I detest peica men who do not man-up.

You are one vile nasty creature. You have no compunction about defaming someone when the don’t share your view.

I set foot on Canadian soil on two occasions in my life. First in 1978 when I attended a military college and then three years ago when I was a delegate at the World Council of Credit Unions.

In 1978 I was injured in training and had to discontinue to receive surgery. The next time I attended the conference and returned with everyone else. When was it that I got expelled for disciplinary reasons. Nasty man!!

By now you should realise that you are on the wrong side when you and “ac” share the same views.

So why make constant reference to the Springer Memorial schoolgirl’s “Absentee” Father?

How do you know that he is a deadbeat dad? Couldn’t he have died or lives overseas?

The schoolgirl’s mother could be just one of the many ‘educated’ women who have decided to make it on their own and like a cow or other female animal just require the fertilizing sperm of a male preferably with perceived good looks and a huge cock to make designer babies.

What the f***k do you expect when you have a gender imbalance of 70% females going on to University as opposed to males? Shouldn’t a fraction of that 70% have offspring to sustain the zero-growth population among blacks or you are prepared to see them die out like the whites?

  27. The verbal abuse and exchanges between Mitch Codrington and Hal Gollop, Codringtonโ€™s continual disrespect of Chairman Gollop and the overall behaviour of both men during the NCC ERT hearings are perfect examples of unruly, uncouth behaviour and a blatant disrespect of authority being displayed by ADULTS.

Yet we are wasting time commenting about a non-issue that could have been solved long ago.

  28. GPS
Miller is absolutely correct.Your arguments are rubbished by the cultural history of Barbados. It will take another 300 years to blot out the slave mentality with which you are afflicted.

  29. Yes Artaxerxes…………..Mitch Codrington’s outbursts are epic.

I have been following this matter and I could not believe the pettiness and vitriol that is going on. I am appalled at how thin skinned Codrington seems to be. He pretends to be sick, asks for an adjournment but when Gollop denies the adjournment, he is fit to carry on.

That hearing is what Trinis call commis!……………and in the meanwhile the poor workers are still suffering. Watch out taxpayers for another $750,000 bill!

Art….none of these on here demonizing a child and her mother can do anything about the lowlife delinquent culprots who are running everything into the ground on the island they are even afraid to speak out or stand up for any rights, they have to pick up and take the garbage, that is how they were socialized in the schools…take garbage.

Their only power lies in bullying children….a learned behavior.

  31. One of the grands in Canada told his bajan born Mum and Dad that when he goes at his white school chums he noticed that they answer back their parents and they are not afraid to do it,they are never sanctioned. It appeared to him that the parents almost encouraged it.He asked his parents why he can’t answer them back if he feels it is necessary. He was told a brusque…’try it’…He also told them he has a Trinidadian school chum who told him that anytime he feels inclined to respond to his parents,he remembers their threats to send him back to his grandparents in Trinidad where they buss your backside in blows for the slightest thing.Points to ponder by two 13 year old first generation Canadians exposed to conflicting sociological norms. Is it any wonder West Indian children are seen and not heard and the effect of that outdated socialization is having on today’s youth. For today’s youth it is out of place. They have a right to be heard without being categorized according to the norms of yesteryear.Yes sir,yes sir, three bags full sir…went out with the outhouse.

โ€œArtโ€ฆ.none of these on here demonizing a child and her mother can do anything about the lowlife delinquent culprits who are running everything into the ground on the island they are even afraid to speak out or stand up for any rightsโ€ฆ.โ€

    @ Well, Well

Agreed. Many of them are old men and women who prefer to be stuck in the past when it was the norm for โ€œchildren to be seen and not heard.โ€

Some of them also reside in countries where โ€œbeating childrenโ€ is forbidden by law and doing such could result in child services removing children from the care of their parents and the may be charged for assault. Yet, even though they are on BU admonishing Weekes and her daughter, they abide by the rules of their adopted societies.

You also have certain individuals who, according to the issue or when it suits them (mainly for political reasons) always use USA laws and human rights to substantiate their points. However, they purposely chose to ignore the childโ€™s rights in this case, while cussing the mother.

As you know, this matter has been blown out of proportion and has caused the entire hierarchy of the Ministry of Education to appear as though they are incompetent. Perhaps the main reason why these individuals are vehemently opposed to the lady and her daughter is because they are trying to protect Ronald Jonesโ€™ image.

  33. @Gabriel February 10, 2016 at 6:35 PM “It will take another 300 years to blot out the slave mentality with which you are afflicted.”

On the contrary. I do not have a slave mentality. The people with slave mentalities are those men who abandon their children as though they are lil’ pickneys in massa’s nigger yard.

  34. @Simple

Do you know if the father is alive?

That is because st least one of his parents is an idiotic person raised by you.

My children can and do talk to me anytime.

But they know the difference between a well reasoned critique and a surly response.

  36. I was blessed to attend a public secondary school in Barbados which practiced a no spanking policy. Yes there such schools in Barbados way back then. White English headmistress. In all my years at secondary school I never saw or heard of any child being spanked/hit/getting a cut tail/getting their ass bust. Nothing so.

And this was a school attended by mostly black working class children from both urban and rural areas. Most of the parents [including mine] worked as agricultural labourers and tradsemen, masons, carpenters, mechanics. Hardly any plumbers, because very few families had running water at home.

    We were never hit.

It is possible to run a school without spanking, but only with the cooperation of the children and their parents, and only if the children are taught to respect themselves and others.

  37. @Simple “Do you know if the father is alive?”

    No. I do not.

But if you will read my initial statements you will note that I said if the father is alive it is his RESPONSIBILITY to intervene.

Obviously I expect no intervention from a dead man (if he is dead)

  38. @Artaxerxes February 10, 2016 at 7:34 PM “Perhaps the main reason why these individuals are vehemently opposed to the lady and her daughter is because they are trying to protect Ronald Jonesโ€™ image.”

  41. @David February 10, 2016 at 8:49 PM “You donโ€™t know the circumstance of the father yet you continue to flog the point. Carry on.”

David I will always carry on asking fathers to take RESPONSIBILITY for their children.

It is my duty as a human being to do so.

As I said if the father is dead he gets a pass.

If he is seriously disabled, cannot walk, talk etc. he gets a pass.

If he is alive I don’t care whether he is in Argetina or Zimbabwe or anyplace in between. If he is alive wherever he is there are telephones, and internet, and airplanes flying between there and Barbados. His daughter is making the front page.

If he is not dead or seriously disabled.

    Let him man-up

  42. @millertheanunnaki February 10, 2016 at 4:53 PM “like a cow or other female animal just require the fertilizing sperm of a male preferably with perceived good looks and a huge cock to make designer babies.”

Except that human children are not calves. A calf is raised to adulthood in a year or two. You may not have noticed but it takes about 20 years to raise a human child to adulthood.

So once the man has finished flashing his good looks and his huge cock the designer baby will will require 20 years of HARD WORK FROM HIM and from the mother to bring it successfully to adulthood.

  43. Don’t know whether or not this one is a dead beat dad.

But dead beat dads don’t get a free pass from me.

And they ought not to get a free one from you either.

All of our children DESERVE their fathers.

However, Weekes has refused an offer to place the 14-year-old at Daryll Jordan Secondary School (formerly St Lucy Secondary), saying she made it clear to the education official who contacted her that she did not want her daughter to go from the โ€œfrying pan directly into the fireโ€.

  49. Caswell said that bushie defamed him.
Well he defamed Mrs Benjamin by saying that someone told him that she made a student take off her Coloured bra and walked around with her big breasts and was teased by teachers. That is a ridiculous lie. I am told it against the school rules to wear coloured bra under your white blouse. If it occurs the students are sent back home to put on the correct colour, which is white. Students defy this rule on many occasions and no student ever had to take off no bra and stay in school. His statement and others put the teachers at Springer as these horrible people. The school functions like any other school with little problems but it is being demonized by some who should know better like Caswell who is a leader of a workers union.
The school had to fight against all odds to gain a positive reputation and a mother who encourage her child to defy school policy and so many occasions has won the hearts of Barbadians by telling so many lies on a Principal who tried to solve the problem with her daughter but the mother intervene every time and disrupted the solution
