Minister David Estwick

The Estimates Debate is well on the way in parliament and should logically be expected to attract robust debate given the dire straits of the local economy.  Unfortunately former Prime Minister Arthur’s assessment that debate in parliament has plummeted to a poorakey standard remains an apt description. A listen to the ongoing debate in the House  has failed to inspire faith in the BU household that the required intellectual capital and gumption cab be located in that august chamber.

On a tangential note BU understands  when the speaker abruptly interrupted MAM’s presentation yesterday Minister of Health and Leader of government business John Boyce crossed the floor and confronted MAM saying he would slap her. The speaker then asked for a recess. The Speaker was heard directing comments at the member for Christ Church South which was followed by a break. MAM continued after the break but there was no Speaker. BU invites comment about this episode which has managed to elude public scrutiny.

The other issue we invite comment is the information reaching BU that the temperamental Minister of Agriculture David Estwick did not attend the parliamentary group meeting which met to discuss the approach to the Estimates. Given his hogging of media space in recent weeks and the pending status of his UAE Proposal which is being weighted by the Prime Minister, one has to surmise that members of parliament on the government side must be sitting as one would with piles.

At a time when our country should be steely focussed on effectively and efficiently managing Barbados’ affairs we continue to be comfortable operating in a combative mode which continues to polarize Barbadians on the grave issues facing Barbados.  We all look forward to Estwick’s contribution to the debate tomorrow.

  1. The IMF has told this inept incompetent government that it needs to cut expenditure. We on BU have been saying so since 2008, the BLP has been telling them every day. They will not take heed.

Now at a time when they are cutting money to the QEH, making poor people children pay tuition fees, cutting money to the polyclinics where poor people go, this disgusting bunch are looking to spend millions to change ID cards.

This project will cost millions. Is this expenditure needed at this time? This is the nonsense this government does. I think I know what this is all about………….should this government fall, there has to be a new election. This bunch of wild boys know that they cannot go the vote buying route again, they have been exposed on that one……….so what to do? give ID cards to all their supporters in the diaspora where they have a lot of support……. and bam! Legal votes!

You cannot say that Dems are dumb, they are schemers. Why would a country with 275,000 people order 500,000 ID cards? Do the maths!

  2. @ Prodigal Son

Is this real. Tell me you are joking – and you call them incompetent. I am sure, if true, you mean brain dead.

  3. The Dems are not to blame for anything
The People in Barbados are to be blamed
A person from overseas remarked that they
can’t understand that Bajans seem to have gone stupid
That 40% that irresponsibly did not vote
The DLP supporters who put party before anything else
    The people though
    The people are to blame
Politicians are nothing without the people
At this stage in the game
Individuals are still accepting crap and doing nada
Bajans seem unaware of their self worth
Where are the strong men in this society
Cant leave things up to women
    They are too weak
weak links in leadership and decision making

  4. Prodigal………..maybe they could not get the new ID’s unless they ordered 1/2 million or more, 1/2 million being the starting point, if they did that they are total jackasses.

Yagg………….men have been running things into the ground now for centuries, the strong men are not interested in being puppets and there are not enough of them to go around anyway, strong females are smart enough to know they cannot control what they did not create, so that leaves the weak males/females who are easily manipulated puppets.

  5. Hal,
I would laugh if it was not so serious.

And you want to tell me that these wild boys care about the deficit? What about holding strain until “next year” when they say the economy will turn around?

I hope they allocated enough money as the registering officers have taken a vote that they want overtime for this work and that their travel allowance be restored as they will have to go out to do investigations.

We shall see! But there again, the # 2 man at the Electoral Office would push for this to be done. He openly campaigned for Adriel Brathwaite and was behind him the night of the election…………I wonder if he witnessed the electoral fraud that went on in that constituency, if the worst AG Barbados ever had, confessed that he saw voter fraud being committed.

    Barbados is truly screwed!

  6. Behind every man who runs any thing into the ground is a woman mekking he shite that means –causing him stress and giving way the pussy to boot equal more stress and the women can include -mother -daughter, wife, concubine

  7. @Prodigal Son

Are you saying government travelling officers continue to have their travel allowance taxed?

  8. Chris Sinckler unmasked Mia Mottley as a fraud in his speech this week in full view of his buddy Kerrie Symmonds who was trying so hard to hide his obvious delight.
Mia Mottley is a national embarrassment and a piss poor opposition leader who is clearly putting her selfish ambition above national interest.
Owen Arthur warned the BLP – this woman cannot be trusted with leadership. He was her boss and he knew why he said that.
    Time for Mottley to go.

  9. @David
:why is former DLP candidate a consultant at the ministry of education

Because as an outstanding, experienced educator he is qualified for the position. Duh?

Compare that with BLP supporters who all became contractors to build houses at Urban and fleeced taxpayers or left schools unfinished after they pocketed the money for the work and you would see the difference.
The two BLP ministers under which this happened are still in the house and one is the current opposition leader or as Clyde Mascoll called her – A disaster as Minister Of Education – one Mia Mottley.

    Mottley must go.

  10. It pains me that before people write about things they do not understand, they should at least do some research. The govt does NOT TAX ccommted travel, but taxes fixed traavel; that is travel some people will receie, regrardless to if they travel or not; this is considered a benefit.. Caswell will tell you that there are some senior officers who have been receiving such for years and would use govt vehicles to travel about the place. Yes they are some public officers whose travel might be greater than the fixed travel they receive, thats a condition of service that would have to be revisited, with the involvement of the unions.

The decison to tax travel, enetertainment and housing allowance was a masterstroke, at it was being abused by the private sector. Why do you think that caswell is harping on the issue of the GS of NUPW and the taxed owed to IRD. The use of cars given to employess is also a benefit, and that area was also abused..

  11. “The decison to tax travel, enetertainment and housing allowance was a masterstroke, at it was being abused by the private sector.”
Since they are so good at taxing, why are we still short of taxes or what are they doing with the taxes collected?

Who are the individuals who were “granted” $257.8 million in 2008/09, $278.4 million in 2009/10, $304.0 million in 2010/11 and $294.0 million in 2011/12, a total of $1,134.2 billion over the four year period?
What are the Public Institutions which were “granted” $824.7 million in 2008/09, $757.1 million in 2009/10, $808.4 million in 2010/11 and $658.4 million in 2011/12, a total of $3,048.6 billion over the four year period?
Under what circumstance were these “grants” made?
If “Grants” of this nature are being detailed for the first time in 2008/09, under what headings were the previously reported?
Assuming that the “grant” policy remained unchanged, how much was “granted’ during fiscal 2012/13
Somebody please tell me that these figures are erroneous and that the Central Bank is playing a joke on the people of Barbados. The alternative is mind boggling.
