Protocol dictates that one never speaks evil of the dead. Mindful of such this writer seeks to thread boldly along the boundaries of truth, the intended goal being the revelation of  fact in relation to the late Sir Richard Christopher Haynes in his role of parliamentary representative for the constituency of St.Michael South Central.

It rips at ones last nerve to hear callers to the brass-tacks program tell their audience that on some moral stand this person, the ultimate narcissist, with an ego too big to fit a single parish in the country parted company with the DLP. Let history record that had Dr.Haynes received the support of his parliamentary colleagues, where he rather than Sir Lloyd would have been the leader, he would have accepted paternity of the brainchild he later referred to as A Backstreet Abortion.

Like Sir Frederick Gladstone Smith’s neglect of South Central became the trait for which he was best known. Like Clyde Mascoll the virtue of patience fell victim to the lure of unbridled ambition. His contribution to our country, that of a medicinal value must surely be recognized and appreciated. Like all others this writer says thanks and rest in peace.

  1. Richie Haynes was not a career politician, and he was not a political party diehard; he was a person who understood the possibilities that Barbados and Barbadians could achieve and he further understood that the BLP and DLP had long plateau in a system that constrains progress as it was all designed to contain and concentrate and project power. Today we continue the see the weakness of this system, so much so that Barbadians collectively demonstrated their disapproval by nearly returning a hung parliament results in the last election. I submit that Bree St.John was absolutely wrong when he said no man is bigger than the party; indeed the minions who currently grace its halls makes that a true statement; however, I would declare that Richie was indeed bigger than either party and as such he walked away from it all. A genuine wish to serve your country and not yourself is unachievable in Barbados political life as I know it.

Many deliberately and maliciously define actions of confidence and conviction as conceit and narcissism.

  2. @Adrian

    You stated it all.

When formed the NDP he also attracted minions which guaranteed its demise because it was perceived as a one man party. His deep intellect and financial independence placed him ahead of his time.

Humbly I submit that we who elected him in South Central saw a different person.Perhaps conviction and confidence equals narcissism. When it came to the departed gentleman,THERE WAS NO DOUBT.

  4. Hamilton Hill; Beautiful comment above. But what does it mean? Do you think that his vaunted conviction and confidence only reflected conceit and narcissism?

  5. The only qualification required by today’s politician is to be popular. Haynes despite his lofty intellect was never popular.

  6. HH; It had to happen. The views of real DLP patriots about the man who broke away had to be ventilated but in a fashion that departed from the forthrightness of a CCC and could still be claimed as being within the bounds of decency. Good tightrope walking!

@ check-it out…my problem with Dr.Haynes came when he finally got to sit in parliament as a member of the government. All that he had so skillfully articulated in relation to quakers road and the surrounding areas went through the window. While in opposition we saw a representative to whom we could relate.May of 1986 however brought for us a different animal.Everything that I say now I said then, and directly to Dr.Haynes.My suggestion to anyone that wants to dispute my take on Sir Richard the parliamentary representative is this.Take a walk through the village and hear the stories of snobbery…and I am taking bout old people.Again I say Narcissistic and then some.

  8. HH; I lived very near Quaker’s road so I know how some people revered Sir Richard as a Doctor who treated them for free and exhibited several instances of compassion. I also know of stories of snobbery going back to his Harrison College days. So he was not as perfect as some would have us believe. Your take helps to round out the picture of the man.

  9. @Checkit

Name a politician who is perfect.

Sir Richard’s intellect and what he could have offered Barbados to move change cannot be matched by those who have a better ‘bedside’ manner. But we like it so.

  10. That’s the point. No MAN is perfect not even BT. I bet that whenever the recent Clico forensic audit drops off a truck the last nail will be placed on DT’s coffin. His contrived greatness that the DLP tried to foist on the Nation will then be revealed for what it was, arrant trickery. Sir Richard Haynes was on the other hand a good man, even an essentially honest politician who had some potential for contributing even more significantly to Barbados than he actually achieved. But I suspect we will have to either go back to the Bree St John’s and Grantley Adams and even perhaps Errol Barrow eras to find a politician who approached a discounted level of perfection. The yardstick for measuring the contribution of Politicians will have to be fashioned to exclude their personal foibles and zero in on the results of their efforts to improve the life of the Country.

  11. Let Sir Richard rest in peace PLEASE!! And as for you ‘haters’, shame on you!! If y’all had just a teeny weeny bit of Sir Richard’s brain, y’all won’t be writing such drivel. Stupse.

    SORRY NELLIE
BUT ACCORDING TO THE STATISTICS REPRTED IN ROBIN’S OR RUBIN’S PATHOLOGY TEXTS RICHIE’S BRAINS WERE VERY UNLIKELY TO BE BIGGER THAN ANY OF OURS

    @Hamilton Hill,
You and many others make the mistake of saying that Dr. Haynes referred to the “Sandi Budget” over which they differed as “a back street abortion”. You are all wrong, what he in fact said; and it can be verified by reference to Hansard, was that ” it was ADMINISTERED with the finesse of a back street abortion”, Quite a difference inf language conveying a difference in meaning and intent. This is what often misleads a lot of people.
