Freddie Kissoon

BU is following closely what is happening to the man we have dubbed the ‘Fearless Journalist’ Professor Freddie Kissoon. The silence of regional media and governments is unacceptable on this matter. The following is reproduced from an email.

WE THE UNDERSIGNED are asking all International Organisations to call upon the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana as well as the Guyana Government (despite attempts to distant itself) to give a full account for its discriminatory action against Mr. Kissoon and to keep an eye on the these adverse developments in Guyana…’

The Constitution of the Republic of Guyana protects the right to freedom of expression and elected Government Ministers regularly proclaim their respect for the Rule of Law accordingly, but these assurances still do not protect those who use their freedom to expose and challenge violations by the executive level of the Government.

Professor Frederick Kissoon knows this better than most, since has been a relentless critic in his Kaieteur News columns of the flaws in governance, of corruption and of privileges accorded to the rulers and their friends. For his pains, the University of Guyana, the country’s only university, has just scrapped his contract and sent him packing after 26 years as lecturer in Political Science.

Kissoon’s record of activism began when he was an undergraduate at the University of Guyana and protested against compulsory aspects of National Service, which was made a condition for graduation. Therefore his latest punishment should not be seen as a pure university decision.

The same anomaly to pack the University Council with partisan cabinet or Govt. appointees that operated to cancel the decision of the Academic Board to employ Dr. Walter Rodney is the factor at play under the new administration of the PPP/C in Mr. Kissoon’s dismissal. This comes after two and a half decades of service to Guyanese, nineteen of them under the PPP/C administration.

The dismissal is an act of intimidation for several reasons.

Mr. Kissoon is by any measure the most consistent critic of the excesses of the PPP/C regime. During 2011 the government arbitrarily suspended the licence of TV Channel 6, but was forced to suspend its own action. This caused two commentators on the economy to be silenced. The action against Kissoon’s presence at the University of Guyana comes while Mr. Jagdeo, the previous president of Guyana, is maintaining  a libel suit against Mr. Kissoon in the High Court of Guyana.

This switch from the High Court to the university is a sign that academic freedom is threatened. This comes when there is apprehension about the ability of UG to sustain an adequate teaching staff to cope with Guyana’s needs. This crack down on a committed lecturer is a yet another signal of hostility to educational development, academic freedom and freedom of expression. It is also a warning to wide cross sections of youth recently breaking their silence that they will not be tolerated.

This dismissal is not the first attempt against Kissoon. He has been assaulted on a city street before witnesses and has failed to get police cooperation and many suspect this is so because of political involvement in his assault.

  • The PPP Government has also been attacking Trade Unions,
  • showing favouritism in the funding of schools
  • and has shut down the promising Critchlow Labour College which improved the quality of workers and prepared them for possible entrance to university education.

Among those known publicly to be driven from their positions for professional conduct and free expression are:

Dr. Janette Bulkan for not speaking, Dr. Carl Greenidge for statements at a funeral, and a former Auditor General who left. It must also be noted that the office of the Ombudsman has been vacant for close to a decade).

Guyana’s PPP/C Govt. participates in the wave of intolerance for Trade Unions and has allowed a foreign employer to break off relations with a recognised union with impunity.

Early in December 2011 peaceful protestors about the conduct of the elections in the city found themselves under fire from police with rubber bullets, and women peacefully picketing anti-social suspects were arrested and charged.

Guyanese have fought long and hard for the right to have their voices heard without fear of recrimination or discrimination. We have stood before and will stand again against tyranny while any of us is being wrongly punished. Our voices will never be cowed into submission.

We welcome the statements of solidarity and concern by Guyana’s Opposition Political parties and the protests by UG Students and lecturers on Thursday 25 January and ask all Guyanese to take a similar stand against the victimisation and abuse of any citizen.

On the International Front we are asking :

  • All Freedom loving people everywhere,
  • Journalists ,
  • Academics,
  • Human Rights Organisations
  • Trade Unions and also

all other International Civil Society Organisations to call upon the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana as well as the Guyana Government (despite its claims of ‘non-involvement’ and ‘powerlessness’) to give a full explanation for its  discriminatory action against Mr. Kissoon and to keep an eye on the these adverse developments in Guyana.

  1. How this new government has started its term can only be described as destructive.

It puts padlocks on the Guyana Cricket Association’s office and attempts to take control of the management of cricket in the country.

Now it fires one of the leading Caribbean journalist in the Caribbean from teaching at the University of Guyana. The man has been teaching there for 26 years.

  2. Am I right in thinking that the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana is one Professor Carrington who was, until recently, a Pro-Vice-Chancellor here at Cave Hill? If so, I wonder how he got that job. From what I hear he adopts the same kind of tactics as his mentor ‘Herod Beckles’….which is to bully his adversaries into SILENCE – or face, well what? Well, in this case dismissal. In others, well manipulation of the system to deny promotion, breaches of the Statutes and Ordinances and other galaxies of dirty tricks. Such shoddy people…..

  3. No…sorry…I just read a glowing eulogy on the net and see he has recently left the University. From what I read, Professor Carrington was in fact a sort of messianic figure, a sort of black Albert Schweitzer. It isn’t actually what I heard though…from those on the inside….but then who can you trust these days? I wonder if he’ll end up back in Herod-ville.

  4. We in B’dos and the Caribbean region think we have economic problems?
Think again, we ain’t see nothing yet, as I’ve been warning over and over again on BU, that the End-Time scenario of Biblical prophecy IS* at hand, with the Middle East as its apex, with radical Islamic fevor, centered on Israel’s destruction and the USA, driven BY* a deep, profound Islamist ideology, which IS* at the HEART* of Iran’s thrust for Nuclear weapons, to facilitate it Satanic quest, to ultimately CONTROL ALL the world, under sharia law.

This Islamic MADNESS, is NOT understood by Obama, or other Western leaders, as the following article strongly reveals, as no economic sanctions imposed by the US and EU countries, can prevent this Iranian regime from pursuing its Islamic DRIVEN purposes, in the supposed name of Allah, who I have without fear, maintained IS* Satan masquerading as Islam’s god!

Watch as it unfolds, exactly as proclaimed by Almighty God, and His Word, the Bible!

    GLOBAL INSECURITY
Iran warns world of coming great event
Says ‘evil hegemony’ soon will be defeated by power of Allah
    Published: 11 hours ago

    By Reza Kahlili

Amid crippling sanctions over its nuclear weapons program, Iran is continuing to prepare itself for war against the West, and now is warning of a coming great event.

“In light of the realization of the divine promise by almighty God, the Zionists and the Great Satan (America) will soon be defeated,” Ayatollah Khamenei, the Iranian supreme leader, is warning.

Khamenei, speaking to hundreds of youths from more than 70 countries attending a world conference on the Arab Spring just days ago, told a cheering crowd in Tehran that “Allah’s promises will be delivered and Islam will be victorious.”

The countries represented included Bahrain, Egypt, Libya, Palestine and Tunisia, all of which have been involved in the Arab Spring.

In his remarks, Khamenei advised the youths to remain vigilant, stating that the Islamic awakening in the region has delivered several blows to the enemies of Islam and that all Muslims, despite their own historical and social differences, remain united in opposing the “evil hegemony of the Zionists and the Americans.”

Khamenei then claimed the current century as the century of Islam and promised that human history is on the verge of a great event and that soon the world will realize the power of Allah.

Many clerics in Iran have stated that Khamenei is the deputy of the last Islamic messiah on earth and that obedience to him is necessary for the final glorification of Islam.

Khamenei has been heard to say that the coming of the last Islamic Messiah, the Shiites’ 12th Imam Mahdi, is near and that specific actions need to be taken to protect the Islamic regime for upcoming events.

Mahdi, according to Shiite belief, will reappear at the time of Armageddon. Selected forces within the Revolutionary Guards and Basij reportedly have been trained under a task force called “Soldiers of Imam Mahdi” and they will bear the responsibility of security and protecting the regime against uprisings. Many in the Guards and Basij have been told that the 12th Imam is on earth, facilitated the victory of Hezbollah over Israel in the 2006 war and soon will announce publicly his presence after the needed environment is created.

Sources within Vali’eh Amr, the revolutionary forces in charge of the supreme leader’s protection, also recently revealed an assassination attempt on Khamenei that was thwarted just in time.

SepahOnline reports that last year during Khamenei’s visit to the port of Asalouyeh in southern Iran, Revolutionary Guards found pistols and hand grenades hidden by one individual dressed as a janitor in a barracks that Khamenei was set to attend. The supreme leader was then returned to Tehran immediately.

Other sources within the Guards report that following Barack Obama’s letter to the Iranian leader last month requesting negotiations, Khamenei ordered Iranian officials to speak positively about holding nuclear talks and giving hope to Obama and other Western leaders that a negotiated solution is possible.

This was apparent after a trip of U.N. nuclear inspectors to Iran this week, who called the talks positive.

At the same time, his directive to the Guards ordered a speedy completion of the Iranian nuclear bomb program in which Guards’ missiles can be armed with nuclear warheads. Khamenei believes once that’s achieved, Iran can test a nuclear bomb, letting the world know that Iran has joined the nuclear-armed club and that any confrontation will result in destruction of much of the Western world.

The Revolutionary Guards not only can hit all U.S. bases in the Middle East with their ballistic missiles but also reach most capital cities in Western Europe. The Guards, with the help of China and North Korea, are working on intercontinental ballistic missiles. But more dangerous to America, as reported last July, is the Guards action in arming their vessels with long-range ballistic missiles and their expansion of their mission into the Atlantic Ocean, right into the Gulf of Mexico.

Any Iranian military or commercial vessel easily could get right outside the U.S. coastline and in less than 60 seconds fire a ballistic missile armed with a nuclear payload and detonate it over U.S. skies in an electromagnetic attack that would plunge America back into the 18th century.

Studies show within just one year after such an attack, two-thirds of Americans would cease to exist and the rest would live under dire conditions.

The radicals ruling Iran not only have prepared for mass suppression of their own people as they get close to their confrontation with the West, but also have prepared to fuel unrest through their proxies in the Middle East and elsewhere.

SepahOnline, with sources within the Guards, reports that Afghanistan will soon witness an increase in terrorist activities against U.S. forces. The Guards not only are training Taliban fighters in Iran close to the Afghan border, but are shipping armaments to forces in Afghanistan with an order to create instability by harming U.S. forces and destabilizing the Afghan government.

Guards agents have also been ordered to do the same in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf counties.

The Guards also announced the imminent formation of a defensive unit to deal with possible radioactive contamination. Although they did not say why, they could be preparing for a nuclear exchange with the West once Iran becomes nuclear-armed.

WND previously has reported that the chieftains in Iran also are preparing to execute their own internal critics and opponents at the right time.

This was similar to action taken by the founder of the Islamic regime in 1988, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

In the book, “A Time to Betray,” it is documented when Khomeini announced the campaign, he said, “If the person at any stage or at any time maintains his (or her) support for the opposing groups, the sentence is execution. Annihilate the enemies of Islam immediately.”

The fatwa led to the execution of thousands of innocent men and women of all ages in a very short period.

“Collapse Expand Events are falling into place for the fulfillment of the prophecy in Ezekiel 38 and 39. The “hook in the jaw” that incites the war could very well be an attack by Israel on the nuclear facilities in Iran. The Islamic nations and their ally, Russia would use this as cause to come together in retaliation to destroy Israel once and for all! But, you don’t mess with God’s people and get away with it! These Islamic forces will be decimated on the “mountains north of Israel” by a massive earthquake. “Ridiculous!” you say, except that the Israeli Geological Institute has been warning the folks in northern Israel since 2004 of increasing seismic activity and a potentially massive quake involving the fault that runs from the north end of the Dead Sea up to Lebanon. Let’s see who is right, Ayatollah Khamenei or God Almighty, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob! As far as America is concerned, you can forget her, She has thrown God and Israel under the bus. She appears nowhere in end time prophecy”.

  7. A real litany of woes:

Dr. Walter Rodney, Freddie Kissoon and the PPP: a tale of “different folk different strokes”.
    Written by realTalk
    Saturday, 28 January 2012 11:03
In Guyana it often seems as if the more things seem to change the more they remain the same. In a time gone by when Guyana was once governed by the PNC, the PPP then in opposition, vigorously protested that which it believed were the excesses of the PNC government. Many of the harsh protests were felt in the sugar industry, where strikes were used as a crippling political weapon, while arson in the cane fields was reserved for the more dastardly acts of sabotage. Sadly the myopic vision of the PPP could not see that it would live to inherit an industry it systematically wounded.
Today Guyana is faced with one of the most corrupt governments in the Anglophone Caribbean, but yet there is a deafening silence from those who once protested the naked abuse of power under the PNC.
In Guyanese politics, there exists a hypocrisy that reveals the blatantly dishonest sides of many politicians, as they pretend to function in the best interest of the Guyanese people. The most recent example of this is seen in the way the PPP led university council members dealt with popular anti-government columnist and political scientist, Mr. Freddie Kissoon.
Upon returning to Guyana from Tanzania in 1974, Dr. Walter Rodney applied to the University of Guyana (UG) to be employed as a lecturer. He was never employed. Many believed that because of his revolutionary political stance against the political leadership of the day, Dr. Rodney was blatantly refused employment. This son of the soil and academic extraordinaire was being refused gainful employment in his own country because the government of the day was not enamored by his vibrant revolutionary political thinking.
The opposition party in 1974 was the PPP. It engaged in very loud protests both at home in Guyana and in the international hallways of power, to register their disapproval of this obscene abuse. PPP leaders in 1974 thought that the PNC government was dictatorial in its handling of Dr. Rodney’s right to work in Guyana, and made sure that its displeasure was felt and understood by all.
Guyana is now governed by the PPP. In 2012, this same PPP that was in fierce opposition of the firing of Dr. Rodney under the PNC rule in the 70s, today can have its members collectively vote to terminate the employment of one of its harshest critics. Sadly there is no decent member of the PPP who would openly renounce this kind of vindictive action taken in this “democratic” Guyana.
Supporters of the PPP must justify their silence on this most vicious action taken against their Guyanese brother who once fought side by side with their leaders against the “tyranny” of the PNC era. In a society where most of its brightest minds migrate to more democratic, economic and politically stable jurisdictions, UG cannot afford to lose a healthy and fertile mind in Freddie Kissoon.
If the PPP leadership truly wants to demonstrate that it is serious about growth and development, ethics and good governance, then it should reinstate Mr. Kissoon immediately! The PPP must learn to identify and reside on moral high ground. It cannot allow itself to continue pursuing a confrontational political agenda which sees it as the big bad political bully.
Guyana truly needs a mature political society where politicians can agree to disagree and coexist without the fear of victimization. Citizens must be allowed to freely express their opinions and not worry about political retribution. The PPP likes to refer constantly to Guyana as a democracy. However, in a democracy dissenting voices are not penalized and victimized. They are encouraged and respected.
Today it is Freddie Kissoon. Tomorrow it could be you or a member of your family! Guyanese must stand up and demand an end to political victimization.

  9. For those who have EARS to hear, and EYES to see, not those whose feet are firmly PLANTED* IN* MID-AIR, a bit more on Iran and its Nuclear intent!

    Friday, February 03, 2012
Matt 24 watch, 151: Is a nuke-threshold (or outright nuclear) war looming over the ME Horizon?

“The latest assassination of an Iranian nuclear scientist by a car bomb, a few weeks back, strongly suggests — with the Stuxnet cyber attacks that seem to have damaged a lot of nuke material concentration centrifuges — that major covert action has been ongoing to try to delay Iran’s breakout to a nuke bomb and missile package.”

“Likewise, Iran is facing increasing sanctions.”

“However, for years now, sanctions and talks (predictably) have in the end consistently proved inadequate.”

“As the Irish Times (acc. through WND) reports on the ongoing annual Herzliya security conference in Israel:”

“THE HEAD of the Israeli army’s military intelligence branch, Maj Gen Aviv Kochavi, says Iran already has enough enriched uranium to make four atom bombs.”

“In a rare public appearance, he told the annual Herzliya security conference Israel has conclusive evidence that Teheran is trying to develop nuclear weapons.”

“Iran is vigorously pursuing military nuclear capabilities and today the intelligence community agrees with Israel on that. Iran has over four tonnes of enriched materials and nearly 100kg of 20 per cent enriched uranium – that’s enough for four bombs,” he said.

“The technical capability exists, the general said, and the final decision to manufacture a nuclear bomb will be taken by one man.”

“When Khamenei gives the order to produce the first nuclear weapon – it will be done, we believe, within one year.”

“For years, Iran has been announcing the expected advent of the Islamic end times deliverer figure, the Mahdi, who in the Shiite version of Islam, is the re-emergence from seclusion of the so-called 12th Imam of Islam.”

“According to Hadiths — recorded traditions of Mohammed that form in effect the second Islamic holy book — the Mahdi is expected to come from the direction of Khorasan (= Eastern Iran and east beyond), with the all-conquering black flag army. In that context, the proposed NATO withdrawal from Afghanistan will be seen by IslamIST radicals as a defeat for enemies of Mahdi, Iran sees itself as the vanguard for said Mahdi, and the Arab Spring/IslamIST Winter is seen as preparing the wider region for the first stage of Mahdi’s triumph. He is to subjugate the ME, massacre Jews, and with the re-emerged Isa [Islamic version of Jesus], the world to the East and the West is to be dominated.”

“Clearly, Khameni either takes this very seriously, or sees an opportunity for Iranian hegemony based on this sentiment. Or, both.”

“Against that backdrop, we can understand the following from The Washington Post, under the headline, “Is Israel preparing to attack Iran?”:
[US Defense Secretary, Leon] Panetta believes there is a strong likelihood that Israel will strike Iran in April, May or June — before Iran enters what Israelis described as a “zone of immunity” to commence building a nuclear bomb. Very soon, the Israelis fear, the Iranians will have stored enough enriched uranium in deep underground facilities to make a weapon — and only the United States could then stop them militarily . . .”

The report goes on to note:

“Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak may have signaled the prospect of an Israeli attack soon when he asked last month to postpone a planned U.S.-Israel military exercise that would culminate in a live-fire phase in May. Barak apologized that Israel couldn’t devote the resources to the annual exercise this spring.”

“President Obama and Panetta are said to have cautioned the Israelis that the United States opposes an attack, believing that it would derail an increasingly successful international economic sanctions program and other non-military efforts to stop Iran from crossing the threshold. But the White House hasn’t yet decided precisely how the United States would respond if the Israelis do attack.”

“The Obama administration is conducting intense discussions about what an Israeli attack would mean for the United States: whether Iran would target U.S. ships in the region or try to close the Strait of Hormuz; and what effect the conflict and a likely spike in oil prices would have on the fragile global economy.”

“The administration appears to favor staying out of the conflict unless Iran hits U.S. assets, which would trigger a strong U.S. response . . . .
U.S. officials see two possible ways to dissuade the Israelis from such an attack: Tehran could finally open serious negotiations for a formula to verifiably guarantee that its nuclear program will remain a civilian one; or the United States could step up its covert actions to degrade the program so much that Israelis would decide that military action wasn’t necessary.”

“By the time the Iranians hit US assets directly and openly, of course, they will have long since had the nuke-tipped, 6,000+ mile range missiles to back up such actions, and/or the nuke suicide bomber squads fired by visions of seventy two perpetually renewed virgins to smuggle in so-called backpack or suitcase nukes through the highly porous Mexican or Canadian borders of the US.”

“The current US estimate is that Israel is not bluffing, though many Israeli military and policy leaders are skeptical about the likely effectiveness of a strike that will almost certainly become a wedge issue with the Obama Administration. But, that should be balanced by the historical note that in 1967, when Israel saw itself as under credible threat of annihilation (due tot he Nasser-led Ring of steel, and oil strangulation attempt through the Straights of Tiran), despite major doubts on what such a strike could achieve, Israel struck by air — using, by and large, inferior aircraft — against the Egyptian and other Arab air forces, and backed that up with a tank led attack that in the main used patched up and modified WW II era Sherman tanks against the Egyptian tank forces.”

“The resulting astonishing triumph, we know today as the Six Day War.”

The Israeli blog, Israel Matzav, reflects:

“If we reach the point where the military option against Iran is about to become “use it or lose it,” I highly doubt our government will lose it. I don’t think any Israeli government – Right or Left – could risk the consequences of losing that military option and then God forbid Iran obtaining nuclear weapons.”

“I don’t believe the US can stop this with sanctions and I don’t believe negotiations would be anything but a stalling tactic. I believe the US can stop it with A LOT of covert action that significantly degrades Iran’s nuclear program, but then it won’t be so covert, will it?”

“Even if we only manage to put Iran off for a year, that year could have a huge advantage: There may be a new President in Washington who is more willing to confront Iran.”

“The bloggist then asks”, “What could go wrong?”

    Obviously, a lot.

“But if Israel sees its survival at stake at the hands of an extremist Iranian regime that has backed terrorism for thirty-odd years, which has been threatening annihilation of Israel for years, and which has been the main backer for what is now a ring of apparently up to 200,000 rockets (mostly 25 mile range, but several thousands have much longer ranges) in Lebanon, Syria and Gaza, there is but little doubt that Israel is willing to strike.”

“For, even if the programme is only postponed by a year, that could be decisive.”

“And, I have but little doubt that Israel would be willing to use nuke bunker busters to take out hardened Iranian targets. Similarly, if Israel strikes, it is unlikely it will just strike nuclear targets, anything connected to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and the regime will be fair game.”

“That is why we need to take the following statement from Israel’s Defense Minister quite seriously:”

“Israel’s defense minister says there is growing international awareness that military action against Iran’s nuclear program will have to be considered.”

“Ehud Barak told a security conference on Thursday in Herzliya, Israel, that he senses a change in international thinking. He says world leaders are increasingly realizing that if sanctions don’t stop Iran’s nuclear program, “there will be a need to consider action.”

“Israel, like the West, believes Iran is developing nuclear weapons. Israel has been a leading voice in calls to curb the Iranian program. Iran says its nuclear program is peaceful.”

“Israel has repeatedly hinted it is ready to attack Iran, saying that while it prefers a diplomatic solution, “all options are on the table.”

“This was backed up by comments to the same conference by Israel’s Strategic Affairs Minister, Moshe Yaalon, that appear in the main body of the same Newsmax.com article:”

“Iran’s suspected nuclear weapons installations are vulnerable to possible military strikes, Israel’s vice premier warned Thursday, suggesting that underground bunkers don’t offer sufficient protection . . . .”

“U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta recently said even the most sophisticated U.S. bunker-buster bombs [presumably, conventional explosives ones] aren’t powerful enough to penetrate all of Iran’s defenses.
Yaalon, a former military chief of staff, suggested Thursday that forces guarding the nuclear installations could be targeted. Referring to the debate over bunker-buster bombs, he said that “at the end of the day it’s possible to strike all the installations.”

“If conventional munitions, however sophisticated, are likely to be inadequate, that strongly suggests that nuke bunker busters — perhaps, launched as GPS-guided cruise missiles from Israel’s submarines in the context of an air strike that would saturate and distract Iran’s defenses — are on the table.”

“Multiply all of this by Iran’s increasing bellicosity, threats to cut the world’s oil-jugular vein through the Straights of Hormuz, and general ME instability over the past year that is rapidly putting IslamIST regimes in place in keystone Arab states. Blend in Turkey’s shift back to a ME orientation and rising IslamISM.”

“Nuke threshold or outright nuclear war is plainly looming over the ME horizon, perhaps within the next several months to a year now.”

“That suggests major disruptions to the vital oil markets, and yet another oil price spike, probably to unheard of levels, US$ 200 – 300 or even more, if things break down sufficiently spectacularly.”

“Here in our region that would probably severely disrupt our tourism trade, and the trade patterns we depend on for food and general consumption.”

“In addition, we must remember that regional power, Venezuela, is an Iranian ally, so fighting in the ME could have spillover effects in our region, especially if the US is involved one way or another.”

“All of this is deeply painful to consider, but we need to think about it very seriously and prepare for the possible consequences of a world that tumbles into even more dangerous developments in the ever-unstable Middle East. END”
