Mara Thompson – DLP Candidate for St. John

At about 10.30 PM last night Mara Thompson was introduced to the Democratic Labour Party platform by long time family friend Hartley Henry. To the strains of Sister Sledge, We are Family, Mara was escorted to the podium by police amidst a throng of party supporters. Flanked by her three daughters and mother who flew in from St. Lucia for the special occasion Mara Thompson delivered a scripted maiden speech which was well received by the crowd.

Observing the enthusiastic crowd described by Prime Minister Stuart to number in the ‘dizzying thousands’, it became obvious to BU that there is a very special bond which exist between the Thompson family and the people of St. John. Even if Hudson Griffith had an outside chance of winning on January 20, that hope was erased by the embarrassing revelation he had to surrender his passport by order of the court of Barbados in 2006. It appears he was charged with assault. There was also the insinuation that he was involved in credit card fraud. Minister of Housing Michael Lashley promised to revealed more soon. Why would the Barbados Labour Party nominate someone of such ill repute becomes the question.

It should be obvious to all who were present at Gall Hill Mara Thompson is the real deal.

  1. Health Min Donville Inniss is outlining all the services the St. John polyclinic facility will include, but I can’t type that fast. Ambulance bay and thing. David Thompson visited the site in May 2008 and then Cabinet started looking in to restarting the project, engineering studies and thing.

ST JOHN POLYCLINC WILL RESTART BY MARCH 15, 2011!

  2. “Every seat you give Kerrie Symmonds he cut up”. Murddah!

  3. Irene picks up on disrespect to Mara and David Thompson. Full page ad. Owen’s so-called tribute in Parliament. Owen’s spiteful tone in saying no special treatment for Mara justbecause she husband dead. Touch one, touch all!

  4. Mara takes the podium. She says of the attack newspaper ad DON’T PANIC!

  5. Talking about the breadfruit photo
“They say I don’t know anything about politics. But you can’t take a pciture with your Chairman and candidate. Where are the people with whom you are supposed to be mixing and mingling?”
    Murdah!

  6. OK, enough of the politics, some policy stuff like working with Hammy La to get seniors and young people in St. John more active, declaring war on chronic non-communicable diseases.

  7. Wonder who is Mara’s speech writer.

  8. I must say Mara is looking much more comfortable. She seems to be enjoying herself too. Yes my Queen!

  9. Oh God, she drop a Joseph Niles song. How very Bajan!

Dis train is a holy train, dis traaaaaaaaain, dis traaaaaain

  10. Fantastic and genuine speech by Mara. She’s really a gem to be admire. She’s a winner by far.

  11. PM STuart
“Owen Arthur may curse you (Mara). But he will not curse you as bad as he curses Mia Mottley. And fortunately for you (Mara) he cannot say the things he says about Mia Mottley about you.”

  12. King, Kingmaker, Dynasty now Queen. We have lost our effing minds!!!!

  13. I wonder too who is her speech writer . Maybe Mara should have left out the the phrase in the speech that said “Don’t Depend on the party” in reference to getting to the poles. The Bees can use that as a political solgan against the Dems. Those are biting words.

  14. Murdah, Freundel says since Owen take over the Opposition Leader position again he is like a rat caught in a mouse trap walking around with the trap stick on him. It wasn’t intended for him, but it miss and catch him.

Cuddear. He says nobody in Barbados doesn’t like Owen because he used to torment them when he was PM.

  15. @ David

For someone who constantly speaks about good governance and all that jazz, I find it troubling that you support this travesty of our political system. I said it before and I will say it again, this is even worse than Owen’s comment in Deacons about the Dems and power.

Realistically the ZRs should charge them anything cause they have no right on them!!! TB is free, use that!!!

The MOF said busfare increases to $2. He never said anything about SC cause he knows they have free transportation already.

  17. The biggest slip of the tongue during this campaign.
Quote from the PM. at 11:15 during his speech “A leader who has no concern is already dead” Bad statement knowing our late PM.

  18. PM Stuart: The magistrates courts should have an allocated sum set aside for single mothers so that even if the father has not paid in money to the court the mother can still get something to support the child. The father will have to pay back that debt to the court.

  19. Tell me Why, yeah a bit of a faux pas.

But I guess not intentional so hopefully no harm done.

  20. Night gentle folks. Been a pleasure. Those who miss the love broadcast can read the notes I made. I’m no professional so I don’t get everything, but I try to get a balance or seriousness and humour. Hopefully I will get better over time. I think the DLP should start paying me. Haha

    God Bless. (And vote Mara!)

  21. And thanks David!!!!

  22. I hope that David Estwick be given the opportunity to wrap up the meeting, knowing the dynamism of his podium acts. Let the PM come before Mara and then the action finale with the “Action Speaker”. Grade the meeting 9 out of 10.

  23. A reminder of what Dr. GP had to say about the St. John Polyclinic and improvement to healthcare delivery in Barbados.

    Read an earlier blog.

  25. For a party that said they were going to run a clean by-election campaign, they sure took alot of cheap personal shots at George Payne, Kerry Symmonds, and Owen Arthur.

George Payne was accused of wearing braces on his dentures and eating roast breadfruit. Clever reference was made of Kerry Symmonds’ domestic violence situation, and Owen was vilified a person who ruled by fear and terror. If you ask me, I believe that the DLP is really fearful of Owen since he became leader of the opposition again. They are afraid that the BLP might put up a decent fight at the St. John polls and gain some kind of momentum from it for the next general election.

  26. Barbados Politics sweet.Entertainment can’t done.

Thanks to live streaming, I can be one of the “mass meeting” attendees.

  27. Loyal subject seems to be of those commenters who appear on the blog to fill a void. Loyal subject’s contributions speaks to fanactical idol worship.

Mara Thompson is not the real deal.
She should be home and somebody for the long term should be running. Most of the crowd attending those meetings are DEMS from all over Barbados. That is how DEMS operate but they going to get shocked in ST .John

    Watch and see

Hi SA, was away briefly, so I could not get back to you earlier. But who are you calling alcoholic, you immatured wet-behind-the-ear nincompoop?

Don’t you know that one of the major triggers for deadly PANCREATIC CANCER is excessive imbibing of alchohol, including lots of vodka … ask drinking partner Kenny Best, who reportedly had an alchoholic drinking fit Christmas weekend, and the hospital ambulance went for him THREE TIMES!

  29. Mr. Stuart P.M.
Are you asking me to help pay child support. Did I hear you say that or am i dreaming. I think you ought to review that decision. A few months ago startingin Jan they wasa Vat increase and other increases in the cost of livin g. Now you are asking me to contribute to paying hard back men child support. I thought that was a civil matter and must be dealt with by the courts. Why Me ! Mr. Prime Miniter? Why ME.?

So the polyclinic will now start by March 15. Well, well well, signs and wonders.
Since the new and improved polyclinic will feature an ambulance bay, will the clinic be open to treat the people of St. John and surrounding parishes, if they take sick during the night, or would they still have to break for the A&E at the QEH.

Anyone knows if $15m -$22m could improve the A&E at the QEH?

  31. Islandgal,
I agree with you about the development plan. It is unfortunate that we are now hearing how soon the polyclinic will restart because politicians seeking people’s vote.

When they selling off the villa nova tell them to sell off the property that Mara and Fay Wharton Parris(wife of Leroy Parris, Clico’s chairman) buy down in Martins Bay shortly after the elections at a cost of $900,000.00 cash, so that the policyholders can get back their investment.

We must not allow politicians to continue to fool we all the time, no matter how innocent they seem to be.

I concur that D Thompson was a very heavy heavy rum biber, he use to be out in the ivy regular, and a womanizer too, so gi me a break wid dis man dat wunna trying to deify.
if wunna doubt me ask anybody in the ivy.

I am not saying that St. John should not have a polyclinic but how does a Government that does not have the money to upgrade existing clinics, find money to restart, complete and outfit an unfinished one?

  34. So the St John’s Polyclinic restarting on March 15! which year? I thought it was removed from the estimates for this year on the IMF instructions. Where is the money coming from to pay for the redesigned plans and the construction of it? Mr Inniss please tell us.

  35. And now for some real issues/news:

“According to Governor of the Central Bank of Barbados, Dr DeLisle Worrell, unemployment has reached about 11 per cent. He said the number of people seeking jobs for as long as a year or more was now “quite high”, and he blamed the recession.
At the end of June 2010, the rate of joblessness stood at just about 10.7 per cent.”

  36. Well there no mention of it in the Budget or the estimates so I guess a supplement is going to put forth between now and March 15 to get it start on time. Though has anyone heard of a tender for the job? So maybe they mean tendering process start on March 15. Or maybe they mean that redesigning of the plan starting march 15.

  37. I wonder if the amended plans were already submitted to Town and Country Planning and have been approved. Who are the contractors ? What is the cost for this new old project?

    I feel sorry fuh you.

  39. I vow to thee my country, all earthly things …. It is a shame that the DLP will not discuss the real issues that concern Barbadians and the St. John electorate. Why is it that the unemployment rate continues to rise almost as fast as soaring food and commodity prices, and the Prime Minister finds it impossible to speak on these things? Why is the BLP allowing the DLP to get away with another sham knowing that ‘Mara’s crowning’ makes the politics of change seem trivial? Compared to the fortunes of the beloved David, what does Mara seriously offer the people of St. John or Barbados? I am not against her or the ‘old Lodge boy’ but I think Barbadians want to know exactly what is it that either candidate has to contribute to the uplifting of St. John and Barbados?
Is Mia the only politician that can speak on issues without degrading women or stooping so low as to suggest that people born in the Windward islands cannot contribute to Barbados’ economy and social life?
This election is looking like the final victory for a mischievous, ineffective government, and it is possibly the last gasp for the 60+ political leaders whose wear and tear have become more noticeable that the hopes for better tomorrows.
St. John people shall vote, but Barbadians will make the judgement call in time for the next general election.

But David the oldest child is not a child.
She is as we say in Barbados a hard backed woman.”

me thinks u cannot understand the QUEEN’S English David was speaking of the children in the context as being the offspring of the Thomspons NOT as being UNDER 18s clown. where did you go 2 school? or did u pay attention during English? I think not
