“….Hardwood Housing Factory Inc. is A GOVERNMENT-OWNED company with EGFL holding more than 90% of the shares.” Minister of State, Clyde Mascoll, in a letter dated October 10, 2007 to Opposition Leader, David Thompson, on Prime Minister Owen Arthur’s instructions.

Hardwood Housing Factory Inc. is an example of the BLP’s arrogance and contempt for YOU. It’s a serious matter. You ought to be concerned. Millions of your tax dollars are being spent willy-nilly without accountability. It’s only when the BLP is put under pressure, that you get disclosure.

If David Thompson hadn’t raised the flag by calling for an independent forensic audit at Hardwood Housing Factory, you would’ve never known it’s a GOVERNMENT-OWNED company. All along, citizens were led to believe by Clyde Mascoll that the owner is a “poor little black boy” whom Government was facilitating.

In just one year of operation, Hardwood Housing Factory has gobbled up almost US$2 million of public financing through the Enterprise Growth Fund Ltd (EGFL) – the basis of Government’s ownership. The so-called “owner’s” investment was $100,000 representing “the value of the equipment contributed and his sweat equity”. Source: Indicative Term Sheet dated Nov 9, 2006.

Clyde Mascoll has more explaining to do. He needs to give FULLER CLARIFICATION of the nature of his association with the company. Saying “I hold no office or shareholding in the Hardwood Housing Factory Inc.” doesn’t satisfy legitimate questions which remain unanswered. He needs to explain, for example, why an employee would have reason to tell the CEO “nothing will make me compromise the trust that God, MR. MASCOLL and the Board has placed in me”.

When Mascoll announced the establishment of the low income housing project on September 5, 2006, it is also interesting he chose to use “WE” in talking about the factory instead of “THEY”. There are four instances where this was observed in the Nation story of September 6, 2006. Here are three: “WE are going to meet within the next two months or so with the carpenters and masons, and this is a project for small people…. ” “WE are now in the process of developing, along with the BIDC, a formal arrangement where the necessary financing would be accessed.” “The masons will put down the foundations and WE will then install on the predetermined foundation….” Don’t you find this baffling?

In the Sunday Sun of January 21, 2007, Albert Brandford, who comes across in his writings as a loyal Mascoll lieutenant, wrote the following about Mascoll’s role in Hardwood Housing Factory. “…. HE has been able to CONCEPTUALISE AND EXECUTE a vote-catching Hardwood Housing project, in three months, and which, according to media reports, is on course to deliver houses – acknowledged as one of the island’s most pressing social needs – to many Barbadians, including his own constituents in St Michael North-West.”

Mascoll’s repeated use of “WE” when he announced the project, as well as Brandford’s firm assertion that “HE” (Mascoll) was the one who CONCEPTUALIZED and EXECUTED the project, raises serious questions about Mascoll’s involvement. A Government minister’s job is not to CONCEPTUALIZE and EXECUTE a private business project. His role is to serve the public interest. It is a serious conflict of interest. Interestingly, Mascoll has never challenged Brandford’s description of his active role. Doesn’t it seem inappropriate for a minister of the Crown? Barbadians are interested in hearing THE TRUTH, THE WHOLE TRUTH AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH.

THE CREDIBILITY FACTOR

“I look forward to a no-confidence motion tomorrow, Mr. Thompson. I have more credibility than you in Barbados and I will continue to have more credibility than you do….” Clyde Mascoll, Nation, October 15, 2007, speaking about the Hardwood issue, at Perry Gap.

Mascoll is clearly living in a dream world when he speaks about his credibility. Look now at how he puts his foot in his mouth and takes his credibility further below zero. On September 6, 2006, the Nation reported:

Mascoll credited Barbadian Anthony Murrell with the concept, after the latter had supervised the building of 500 houses in Grenada in six months after the devastation caused by Hurricane Ivan.” David Thompson investigated and found the figure of 500 was inaccurate.

Here’s Mascoll’s explanation now. “….the issue of whether he (Murrell) built 500 houses in Grenada or not was “neither here or there” (Mascoll’s words). Source: Nation, October 15, 2007. No, Mascoll! The figure is relevant. It’s what you used to establish the builder’s credentials and to justify the project. Credibility is based on consistency. You cannot be serious about your credibility when you made a definitive statement a year ago and now say it is “neither here or there”. IT MATTERS! If you cannot give and keep your word on a simple issue, it raises questions as to whether Barbadians can seriously take anything you say at all.

TERMS OF ECFL INVESTMENT

For putting money into Hardwood Housing Factory, ECFL established certain requirements which the company must meet. Where certain specified breaches occur, ECFL says it “shall be entitled to demand repayment in full of all outstanding monies due regarding the class ‘A’ shares (covering its investment) and to take such action as may
be deemed necessary to protect its interest”.

Such action would apply, for example, “if any creditor shall take action against the Company to enforce payment of monies due to such creditor.” The evidence suggests Hardwood Housing Factory came close to breaching this requirement. Up to August 28, the company had issued bounced cheques totalling $33,000 for various services.
One cheque, for the sum of $4,262.60, was written to the Comptroller of Customs. Management has acknowledged there were cash flow problems. Could some of Hardwood’s business practices have been contributing to the problem?

HARDWOOD’S BUSINESS PRACTICES

Clyde Mascoll recently told us that Hardwood Housing Factory is a GOVERNMENT-OWNED company. As junior minister of finance, he shares responsibility with his “boss man” – Owen Arthur, the minister of finance – to ensure the sound and proper management of public finances. Back in July, a month before the bank declined to honour the cheques, concerns were expressed about certain business practices. These concerns are documented. It would be interesting to hear what Mascoll has to say about them. Will he say these too are “neither here nor there”?

The charges were as follows:

There were sites where work was taking place but the sales department had neither a record of these sites nor receipts for any monies deposited in the company’s bank account for the said work. There were persons who were being paid by the company for doing work which the company had not record of.

If such allegations were made against any other government-owned entity, it would be enough to justify an official audit of the company. Taxpayers would demand no less. As a government-owned company, Hardwood should not be treated differently. A strong case exists for an independent forensic audit of Hardwood Housing Factory.

A situation also exists where equipment used by the company – truck, stone mixer, bobcat, excavator, generators – are owned by the minority shareholder rather than the company itself. The minority shareholder acquired the equipment through lease arrangements with Simpson Finance and Consolidated Finance and, in turn, leases them to the company. Mascoll said this arrangement results in “savings of approximately $44,000 per month to the company”. He did not give details of how this is achieved.

It is alleged that Hardwood covers the cost of maintaining the equipment. Normally under arrangements of this kind, those costs are borne by the owner of the equipment. Just over a month ago, both finance companies wrote the owner, bringing to his attention that payments were in arrears. One company even mentioned the possibility of repossession if the issue wasn’t promptly resolved.

After one year in business, what does Hardwood Housing Factory have to show? SEVEN HOUSES built in the New Orleans for the Urban Development Commission (UDC). Initially, there were cost overruns of $248,000 on this project but the figure was later revised downwards to $129,000 by the UDC. Draw your conclusion! Mascoll has complained that “THE LACK OF AVAILABILITY OF LAND” to build houses, has hindered Hardwood’s ability to deliver on its promises. It is refreshing that a member of the Owen Arthur administration has finally admitted the folly of the BLP’s land policy of aiding and abetting the sale of Barbadian land to the highest bidder who increasingly is foreign.

In the case of one St Peter land owner who was approached, readiness to make land available for low income housing was tied to Town Planning approval of other lands for “high end development”. Hardwood Housing’s experience shows how much the BLP’s ill-advised land policy is having the effect of forcing middle and low income Barbadians out of the real estate market.

A MODEL EMPLOYER?

As a government-owned company, Hardwood Housing Factory has an obligation to be a model employer. If a government-owned company disrespects workers, doesn’t it send a wrong message to private enterprise? In just one year of operation, here’s are blemishes on Hardwood’s image as an employer.

Charges of sexual misconduct against a manager.

Charges that employees are shouted at and abused.

Employing workers whose immigration status was not in order.

Being accused by the Barbados Workers Union of violating
International Labour Organization Convention 94 regarding fair
practices.

Keeping a dog inside the factory in violation of the Factories Act
and pressuring workers to clean up the mess.

SOLID CASE FOR PROBE

Going by available evidence, a solid case does exist for a probe, including independent forensic audit, of Hardwood Housing Factory. This isn’t only David Thompson’s fight. It’s YOUR fight. Demand accountability from the BLP! Tell Owen Arthur it’s time to demonstrate real leadership instead of running away from calls for accountability.

  1. If I had any doubt before that this whole issue stinks. It’s clear now. Entertainment allowance ONLY at Aqua which is part owned by Hoyos who is on BOTH boards (EGFL & Hardwood, as if that wasn’t conflict enough already??)

    Sigh.

Regarding Carol Phillips she has made her position clear and seems to have evidence and a paper trail to support it.

Neither Mascoll, Murrel, Government, nor EGLF has shown or spoken about any such documentation, either in defense of allegations raised or in support of claims they have made. (oh shoot, sorry, there is ONE picture of Murrell on a family web site).

My God, how can any right thinking principled Member or Parliament and/or representative of the people condone, support or at the very least not stand in opposition to this whole fiasco played out with OUR taxpayers’ money??

    This stinks worse than Mangrove.

  2. I am lost for words!

  3. And the scam goes deeper than we first thought, The amazing revelation in todays Nation where this lady could be given an allowance of $ 2,000.00 to be spent at AQUA now let me also suggest that she is not the only one from HARDWOOD HOUSING with an allowance such as this one for use at AQUA, lets us look at the reality of this matter HOYOS as Charirman of HARDWOOD HOUSING, DIRECTOR of EGFL, PARTNER AND DIRECTOR AQUA, and a board member of the Central Bank of Barbados, Now can it be that HOYOS could be part of an arrangement that would permit gov’t funds from EGFL via HARDWOOD HOUSING to be directed to HOYOS private enterprise in gov’t funded allowances at nearly half of this ladies salary.

This is a sickening case of dishonesty in public office carried out with the blessing of the idiot ASSCOLL and HOYOS who is the Chairman of HARDWOOD HOUSING.

  4. It was one of the sharpest meetings that I have attended, it was sharp because all the speakers chose an aspect and dealt with it in great detail, there is a feeling that there should be a motion of no confidence in the very poor performance of the Speaker of the house in last Tuesdays sitting where the Leader of the Opposition stated that he was unfairly treated by the speaker of the house, as he stated tonight when he presented a list of names to be called during his presentation this list was refused but ASSCOLL and Liz Thompson were free to name a list of names without ever presenting them to the speaker of the house, as Mr Thompson stated tonight in his opinion the house has now dissolved and they are now ready for the date of the election.

    Yet another lie!

‘she (Mia Motley) charged that a non-national woman who was employed at Hardwood had tried to get her salary moved from $4,000 to $11,000 a month’.

‘He (Mascoll) saifd the woman, who had a senior position at Hardwood, was fired after she attempted to pay herself and move her salary from $4,000 to $11,000’.

    Daily Nation ‘Fired up’

‘Clearing the air regarding the former director of operations, Carol Phillips, Hoyos said she was fired after refusing to reverse the decision to increase the salaries of two employees after being instructed to do so’.

Daily Nation – Hardwood Housing ‘means business’

And the question still remains, WHO approved the $2,000 monthly ‘entertainment allowance’ that could only be used at Aqua Restaurant?

    Did the Chairman approve this?

    Did the CEO approve?

Did the Board of Directors approve this?

Did the Enterprise Growth Fund Limited approve this?

‘He (Hoyos) told the Press the board of directors and general manager meant business and there was a wealth of experience among them’.
‘We are serious people with a serious business plan, approaching this thing with all the seriousness that is required of a company with this type of plan’

Does a $24,000 per annum ‘entertaintment allowance’ that can only be used in one restaurant, awarded to an employee whose company mission objective is to build houses for poor people, sound like ‘serious business’ to you?

  6. sound like ’serious business’ to you?

    Yes…….serious THIEFING…….!

Where is the voice of FRANKOLOGY & ROYALRUMBLE …….?

They both said David Thompson was DELAYING the No – Confidence Motion !

  7. Just as expected……now that the chickens are beginning to come home to ROOST !

    Our most ” NEUTRAL ” IMPOSTOR on these BLOGS…..a.k.a FRANKOLOGY…..has disappeared !

Not a comment in the ” comments ” sidebar on the right hand of this screen !

He was saying all along leave the HARDWOOD issue and go for the ABC / FLYOVERS…..just like ASSCOLL told Parliament …..or was it ASSCOLL parading as FRANKOLOGY on these sites …..?

I guess FRANKOLOGY drowned in the AQUA (WATER ! ) RESTAURANT !

  8. The Hardwood corruption scandal is the tip of an iceberg. I looked at the picture of Khan and Hoyos today and I realise the extent to which the BLP has lost its PR edge. You can’t run a “poor black man” defence and then have Hoyos and Khan up front.

    You think Bajans are idiots?

I am breathless from the Dems meeting last night. That crowd was massive, attentive and in agreement. Barbados is ready for change. Lets get to it.

  9. Jerome, it appears all sympathisers with this issue have disappeared. There’s no need to speculate why. Absolutely no defense can be mounted against the charges as laid, and there’s still more revelatinos coming out of the woodwork.

To try to defend this issue, is to fly in the face of accountability, fairness, transparency and good practices, far less good governance and to do so also implicitly implies a support for the corruption and wastage we’ve seen associated with government projects and taxpayers’ money.

And of course then there’s the clear bias of the Speaker in dealing with the house.

I’ve voted both B and D. Up until November I was an undecided. My ‘X’ is now ready to sound its voice. I advise all others to sharpen theirs.

  10. This BLP is a bunch of liars and thieves. Chris Sinckler’s production of the $7,000.00 cheque from the St. Peter Development Fund that was used to get Kelvin Price – Owen Arthur’s brother in law – out of prison dealed it for a number of Bajans at the Dems’ meeting last night.

How could money raised and ear-marked to help develop St. Peter be stolen in this way to support the criminal activities of family members?

that cheque needs to be sent to the Police and the DPP!

  11. I think the PM has two things to do now
    1) Call elections …. NOW
    2) Pack his bags.

  12. Maybe if Owing were to stay off the rum and the corruption he would be in a much better position than he is at present.

How can he blame the Nation for he loosing his grip over them, they are merely bowing to the public pressure to be free, honest and fair in their reporting of matters and if this action happens to expose he and his corrupt gov’t ministers and back benchers so be it, but the people will not rest until elections are call and we are allowed to vote to evict these bastards from around us.

It is also extremely revealing to me to read in the Nation that Hoyos could state that, He said Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance Clyde Mascoll, who is at the centre of a no-confidence motion expected to resume tomorrow in the House of Assembly, had nothing to do with the company now.

“Minister Mascoll plays no role in the factory whatsoever. He may have before, I have no idea I can’t answer to what he did in the formation of the company since I’ve taken over as chairman he’s attended no board meetings,” Hoyos said.

Now in saying this it is an admission that he played a role in the company before but is no longer doing so, so it is confirmed that he was involved for some while in the day to day affairs of HARDWOOD HOUSING.

I also notice that none of the reporters confronted him or made him address the obvious dishonest action of paying a entertainment allowance to staff members to be used at only AQUA this is a company that he is director of receiving a fixed income from a company that he is Chairman of using taxpayers monies of that has been funded by a loaner company that he is director of, in other words he has set about channelling taxpayers hard worked for monies to his private restaurant businness for his benefit and the benefit of Colin Brewer the same one with an inside track to duty free shops at GAIA.

  13. Our most ” NEUTRAL ” IMPOSTOR on these BLOGS…..a.k.a FRANKOLOGY…..has disappeared !
    …………………………………………………………………….
Goodmorning Jerome and my friends on the blogs. WIV you are on a role.

I also have a life, a wife and children. Anyway, I was following my best vice, motorsports. I was at Bushy Park having a fun time.

Yes, I was adamant in the No-confidence having a swift passage through Parliament. I was and still of the believe that no stones to be place in the way to curtail, delay or place procrastinated elements in the way. I was also angry in the adjournment of the debate to deal with other issues that could have been delayed until the motion is finish.

What I am against is the tactics of refusing to continue the debate in Parliament, using the speaker as an excuse. No speaker in Barbados’ history has been neutral in submission, you will always find some element of partisanship within their deliberations, remember the speaker is still a member of Parliament and is still committed to the party first and foremost.

I prefer to comment on things tangible and not based on innuendos or hearsays.

Please do not confuse the issue of me being Mascoll or Ascoll. I am Frankology at large.

I am NOT associated with the BEES or DEES. I am a free commenter to speak my mind, this is still a democratic country.

  14. He was saying all along leave the HARDWOOD issue and go for the ABC / FLYOVERS…..just like ASSCOLL told Parliament …..or was it ASSCOLL parading as FRANKOLOGY on these sites …..?
    ……………………………………………………………………..
Before any extended discussion with the Hardwood issue, I have insisted that the Veco issue, the ABC expansion and the Law Court development issue should be more on the front burner due the massive outlay in capital. Every day millions of dollars are wasted on possibly disappearing by elements with a penchant of removing state funds. This is why I am adamant in getting investigations going based on economic priorities.

  15. Why doesn’t Frankology, who is so knowledgeable on everything, provide the information to start the investigation of his other priority issues?

This is a typical political strategy: keep moving the goal post. If you say , I say B. Hardwood is hurting so they want tohe spotlight off of it. But I congratulate the Dems because they had the information, they had the strategy and some covers have been blown.

Priority issues don’t relate to the amount spent. Its the principle that counts.

    *******

An excuse? The motion was lodged, Thompson laid the charge and the person against whom the charge was laid replied. What debate?

To hear “polished hoe” Liz Thompson? And get- down-to-low-town Owen Arthur?

You can’t hide your stripes Frankology!

  17. Frankology is one that is so typical of the membership of the blp, jumping from here there and everywhere when the pressure is applied.

The clown Tony Hoyos is on the call in show making a complete as of himself, he can talk to the cows come home based on the evidence todate I have to side with the lady who was employed by HARDWOOD HOUSING as not a lot of anything coming out of ASSCOLLS or HOYOS’s mouth has been honest or truthful, when Hoyos was just asked who signed the cheques in the past at HARDWOOD HOUSING his reply, senior members of staff no names provided here, when asked why he refused to address the issuse of the lady and her claim that the entertainment allowance was to be used at Aqua exclusively his reply that many things were discussed but this was not one.

He is rambling now addressing the issue of vehicle rentals this is a sad case of bad management and corruption.

Wrong on all counts. I bought a house and found one small visible roof leak. This led to an investigation of the entire roof where i was able to find bigger leaks that this not manifest themselves in the traditional way on the the inside ceiling.

The proof of potential malfeasance in a small project such as hardwood, solidifies the need to investigate the larger projects. Before this it would have been a hard sell. An archaeologist digs where he has certainty of finding his artifacts. A hunch does not cut it.

  19. Why doesn’t Frankology, who is so knowledgeable on everything, provide the information to start the investigation of his other priority issues?
    …………………………………………………………………….
Did you read all my submissions on the highway project?. I questioned the Danos issue, I was appalled of the triple jumpers pertaining to increase costs. I dealt with money being spent on the Bermuda triangle unnecessarily. I lay the foundation for arguments. Can I call a No-confidence motion against Glyne Clarke?

  20. I bought a house and found one small visible roof leak. This led to an investigation of the entire roof where i was able to find bigger leaks that this not manifest themselves in the traditional way on the the inside ceiling
    …………………………………………………………………….
I purchase a house for 1/2 million and realise the house was on a cliff, half the house disappeared over the cliff. I lost the full 1/2 million and now have to look for 1 million to start over. It is the precedence that matters.

Remember you said, “An archaeologist digs where he has certainty of finding his artifacts”. I say “Thompson digs where he has certainty of finding Mascoll” Ah lie!

  21. When one looks at the poll on this site and you realise that when the visitors are asked if I want a Plantation fame Noeless Blarney Muscle Mary Lynch has done agood job running the ministry of tourism or not the result of the poll is 16 said yes he did a good job and 107 said no he has done a bad job.

The question is will the same question be asked of the others including Owing?

  22. Frankology: How does your house purchase scenario validates your insistence of investigating ABC and Veco instead of continuing to investigate Hardwood? and so doing in spite of the bounty of malfeasance yield from the investigation?

…..Your house purchase scenario doesn’t only prove the stupidity of the purchaser but the finance company for lending the money without due diligence. In fact you scenario does not mirror reality as it is with house purchasing. Any finance company outlaying that kind of capital would have sought some security in their risk, by requiring adequate insurance on the property, and it fails on this point to be a serious analogy of reality.

On the face of it Hardwood didn’t seem like a glaring case of thieving and corruption that it may now be. Uh mean we didn’t even know that it was a government owned company, and now that the declaration has been made we understand why a company funded by venture capital, from a fund setup with tax papers dollars and overwhich the people via their representatives have no oversight, is now viewed as such.

….. by certainty as oppose to a hunch, I am suggesting that the archaeologist would have investigated historical records pertaining to the artifacts that he is hoping to uncover.

……I don’t think you are fooling anyone with your declaration of non-partisanship. If you truly are it might be time to renew that declaration, as um wearing very thin. 😀

  23. What’s with the new cryptic handle, Adrian?

  24. ha ha ha ha ha The Labourparty blog has banned my use of the Adrian Hinds, …..even if i put my name in the body of my contribution to their blog, it disappears into thin air. As you know when you contribute to multiple WordPress blog, it saves the last name used and auto populate the next “leave a comment” name field with it. nothing sinister.

  25. Frankology: How does your house purchase scenario validates your insistence of investigating ABC and Veco instead of continuing to investigate Hardwood? and so doing in spite of the bounty of malfeasance yield from the investigation?
    ……………………………………………………………….
The amount of financial yield from malpractice with the said Veco and ABC is that enormous that investigations should have commenced with the ABC issue since 2005 when the overall cost move from $120 million to $140.00 million before anyone dive a single stroke; and this was long before any improprieties with the Hardwood cognitive content. That is why I am speaking of placing priority on this matter before any more unnecessary drainage on the economy. Must I be partisan in my views for action to take place?

  26. ……I don’t think you are fooling anyone with your declaration of non-partisanship. If you truly are it might be time to renew that declaration, as um wearing very thin.

When I sing your tune, everything seems so right, but if I start to question statements that are not conclusive, the guns are drawn. You have to deal with me for whom I am, and not what you want me to be.

It must be much more difficult to prove the case against veco and the ABC project than it has been for Hardwood, and the overly pragmatic Barbadian populace demands no less. There are some, in the face of all the proof so far of Malfeasance at Hardwood have now shifted the requirement to that of a smoking gun.

  28. ASCOLL and his fate was decided sometime ago when he was bought out by owing at the expense of mottley and company, it must be extremely amusing to mottley to be sitting and watching he and the PM taking a pounding at the hands of the Opposition Leader Mr David Thompson.

The moraless beast that mia the biter mottley is can still stand and support this crook and vagabond puerly because they want him to win a seat for them, I have news for all of them in that party he and them should be resigning themselves to finding work where ever they can find it because after this next election their services will no longer be required.

When a PM can support the level of stealing, blatant corruption, fruad, bribery and dishonesty as he has and to have made no attempt to address these glaring misfits he to stands charged will a gross neglect of duty, sadly he cannot attempt to censor because he would first have to censor himself !!

    How does this get done?

The extent of the arrogance towards the population and callous nature of his management of the affairs of this island leaves us with no choice but to dispose of he and every member of his cabinet in no uncertain terms, VOTE THEM OUT OF OFFICE FIRST AND THEN LET US PROCEED TO CHARGE THOSE THAT NEED TO BE CHARGED WITH CORRUPTION, FRAUD, BRIBERY, MISUSE OF PUBLIC FUNDS, AND THEN MOVE THEM AFTER BEING FOUND GUILTY TO THE BRAND NEW PRISON AT DODDS.

May I also suggest that the search be extended to include the likes of not only Ministers but the likes of the inner circle such as HALLAM NICHOLLS, GLYNE BANNISTER, RODNEY WILKINSON, RICHARD COX, SHOREY ET AL.

  29. Adrian, There can be NO DOUBT that ASSCOLL acted beyond the call of duty, this statement is usually associated with positive comments but in this case it is as negative as it can get because, despit what they on that side are prepared to say and do to get a seat they know fully well that he is guilty as charged, but birds of a feather flock together, need I say more?

  30. Owing having worked himself into a corner that he is unable to extract himself from is now finding his options for calling an election dissappearing fast and with ech passing day his voting base is being attacked and is declining mainly due to his own actions to attempt to be the DICTATOR and the return of the second HITLER, thank god the people of Barbados have been exposed to his manner and his style and his dishonesty in office just look at who he aligns with to get an idea of what he is about!!!

  31. THE PEOPLE DESERVES A CHANCE TO WORK WITH THE DLP
BY REUDON EVERSLEYCHANGE IS EASILY the most dominant feature of modern life. We hear stories daily of how people around the world are coping with change at home, in the workplace, community and country.

Right-sizing, re-engineering and repositioning are among common buzzwords in business parlance. They describe strategies companies are adopting in response to economic, technological and other changes.

Driven mainly by globalisation and other economic and social pressures, change is also forcing individuals to rethink traditional ideas and approaches to work, education and other key aspects of life.

Barbadians once believed a job with Government or certain companies made them set for life. Change has shifted this perspective to the point where there’s gradual acceptance that people are now more likely to hold several jobs in a lifetime.

Change has always been a central feature of the human experience. The only real difference today is the speed and scope. Sometimes you haven’t fully adjusted to one form of change before another comes knocking. Change is everywhere and it’s affecting everyone and everything.

After 13 years of Barbados Labour Party (BLP) rule, the winds of political change are blowing. A significant percentage of the population wants a change of Government.

The BLP has repeatedly reminded Barbadians of the need to change. Yet, a strange scenario now exists, where the BLP is asking to be exempted from change. According to its reasoning, change is fine so long as it doesn’t result in its removal from office.

Changing the Government, Prime Minister Owen Arthur argued last July, amounted to “gambl(ing) with the future . . .”. Ironically, the same argument could’ve been used against the largely inexperienced BLP team back in 1994. Yet they were given a chance. The Democratic Labour Party deserves no less.

“He who rejects change is the architect of decay,” observed former British Prime Minister, the late Sir Harold Wilson. Instead of decay, a change of government offers hope for a beautiful spring of exciting opportunities and possibilities.

A change of government is good psychologically for a country. It proves democracy is alive and well. In Barbados’ case, change surely can answer the growing national cry for a fresh start with new leadership, ideas and approaches.

Change, not more of the same from a tired BLP, is the only meaningful solution for ending the present despair. Embrace the opportunity!

  32. Mascoll under DLP fire

Prime Minister Owen Arthur and Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, Clyde Mascoll, appear to be at odds over economic policy.

That’s according to Opposition Leader David Thompson, who told the DAILY NATION that Government’s economic policy had been thrown into “total disarray” by Mascoll’s statements at a lecture which he delivered at Frank Collymore Hall last Wednesday. He said Mascoll’s suggestion that one could not “pull down prices” by asking people to do so, “flies squarely” in the face of Arthur, who at Government’s recent economic consultation sought to do just that. Thompson added: “His other comment that you have to set the economic environment for pulling down prices, confirms our assertions that there is no prices policy in Barbados, even with a social partnership in place, and that the fulminations of Senator Lynette Eastmond on consumer issues are worth nothing.” The St John MP said Mascoll’s “contradiction” of Arthur’s view that the removal of the cess should bring down prices was yet another example of confusion within the ministry. 33. Arthur is desperate
    Posted – Fri Nov 23 2007
Its time for Owen Arthur, Mia Mottley and the leading lights of the Barbados Labour Party come clean on the issue of their obvious impatience with the timing of the Hardwood Housing Inc. scandal debate. We know for sure that it is clear that this issue is interfering with their election calling timetable and that Hardwood and the issue of cost of living could not have come at worse times for this BLP group, Originally, all systems were go for the calling of a mid- December general election. We have disc overed that these plans are to be shelved even though they were discussed at their last meeting of Senators and MPs.
The BLP concern is that they do not want to carry this election too far into the New Year, but they cannot go to the polls with two such major issues unresolved and still hanging over their heads. The public should by now be able to see that they need to throw every possible solution at resolving these two particular issues before the end of this month.

The childish threa t by Leader of the House, Mia Mottley to bring a counter no-confidence motion through the back door was always laughable if it was not so serious coming from a government that wants to temporarily suspend the Barbadian constitution.

Although suc h foolishness was never on the cards because bringing a motion on Hardwood would have made it impossible for the Leader of the Opposition to do the same a few days later. It is David Thompsons motion that goes to the heart of the matter. As the Leader of the Opposition said, If they want to hurry this process and dissolve Parliament before debating Hardwood, thats a matter for them. But I warn that they will have to answer a series of questions from the public platforms.

While Ms. Mottley was i nforming the honourable House and accusing David Thompson of not being ready with his motion, he had long given a copy of the Motion of No-Confidence and the resolution calling for Integrity Legislation, Asset Declaration, Freedom of Information and amend ments to the Defamation Act to the Clerk of Parliament. This is a shame and we hope that parliamentary action will be taken against the Deputy Prime Minister.

The stage is now set for debate on these crucial issues. The No-Confidence Motion was de liberately tied to the accompanying resolution on integrity because we dont just want to discipline Ministers who step out of bounds we also want to set forth to the Parliament and to the people of this country how the Democratic Labour Party, as a gover nment in waiting, will go about repairing the damage that has been done to image of politics and the issue of governance in Barbados.

David Thompson has insisted, and rightly so, that this will not be done in their time.

In his letter to th e Speaker and in a conversation with the Leader of the House, he had already given notice that he was going to be out of the island on private family business towards the end of this week, so it really made no sense for the Leader of the House to have adj ourned proceedings until today. The motion that was given to the Speaker will not be debated today. Its as simple as that. No one is intimidated by Mottleys threats and her silly strategy is now in tatters.

The colourful adjectives and superlativ es used by Owen Arthur, are a reflection of his anxiety and desperation to clean the things to do tray, so as to pave the way for the calling of elections.

Mascoll et al are bungling the Cost of Living issue. This BLP had absolutely no intention of tackling cost of living before the elections, but now that it has been brought into play, they are agitated because they know that this will force them to choose between the interest of the people of Barbados and the interests of their financial maste rs. That is why we insist that that 20 per cent price reduction initiative is a farce that will not last, if ever it comes into operation.

  34. Heard through the grapevine that pensions are to be increased by 3% next month . The calling of elections will be following closely behind that

  36. I recently heard on the radio that the DLP have taken the decision not to return to the House of Assembly for the rest of this year in protest about the show of disrespect by mottley and in particular the role of the speaker in this debate.

They have since taken the decision to prosecute ASSCOLL in the public forum minus the benefit of Parliamentary privilege and where they speak with freedom as opposed to the restrictions that were imposed as was the case with the Speaker requesting a list of the names to be called by the Leader of the Opposition and refusing to allow him to called any of the names provided but still on the other hand he allows ASSCOLL and liz thompson to rampage and call whoever’s name they wanted to.

I agree that the halls of Parliament have been corrupted and distorted by this current adminstration and the only option is to prosecute using the only means left at their disposal, that is to talk directly to the people of the Nation,March or to Protest in any other form that they can legally do so.

The best course that the missing from debates owing arthur can take is to take progressive steps and call the election right away.

We are tired and frustrated by our present lack of honesty, trust, and caring by this gang of crooks and criminals.

I suggest if the party decides to hold the meeting tomorrow to further prosecute the crook ASSCOLL that we all turn out in our numbers and show our support for the actions of our Loyal Opposition.

May I also beg you Mr Thompson please let us not ease your willingness to charge all of those that have been involved in dishonesty, bribery, fraud, corruption and those that have raped the treasury, during the life of this current administration, they need to be dealt with and to be dealt with firmly and swiftly.

  37. DEMS’ D-DAY
    Published on: 12/11/07.

WILL THE DEMOCRATIC LABOUR PARTY (DLP) Members of Parliament (MPs) be attending Parliament this morning?

That’s the question on the lips of Barbadians up to press time last night. DLP MPs were in a special meeting to decide whether or not they would participate
in today’s debate in the House of Assembly.

On Sunday night, Opposition Leader and DLP president David Thompson said he would meet with his colleagues to determine the next course of action.

Before going into a parliamentary group meeting at the Opposition Leader’s Office in Parliament yesterday, he said a decision would be made “tonight” (last night).

Last week, the six-member Opposition team walked out of Parliament protesting the decision to switch the debate from the no-confidence motion against Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Clyde Mascoll over the Hardwood Housing issue, to the Public Service Bill.

Immediately after that walk-out, Thompson and his colleagues called a Press conference and said they were disappointed with the manner in which Speaker of the House Ishmael Roett was conducting matters in the House.

On Sunday night, Senator Freudel Stuart said that if the decision was his, he would not be returning to the House of Assembly tomorrow (Tuesday). “But I am a team man, so I will abide with whatever decision the parliamentary group makes,” he said.

Thompson, too, said he was fed up with the Speaker and was also prepared not to return to Parliament, but would respect the decision of the parliamentary group.

Meanwhile, Leader of Government Business and Deputy Prime Minister Mia Mottley said last night Government was prepared to deal with the no-confidence motion once the DLP members turned up for the debate.

She, however, said that should the Opposition stay away, there were other matters on the agenda which would be debated.

  39. I support that position 100%. David Thompson spoke and Mascoll replied. That’s all I need to hear. The matter has been resolved! Mascoll is essentially a man with no moral compass. he is led by a leader who never had one. And they are supported by psychophants who will do anything just to get a quick dollar like Erskine “Cap” Durant, Henderson “Mr. Slime” Bovell and Sylvan “Dishonest” Greenidge.

    Leviticus,

Why is Thompson running away from his no confidence motion?

Does he have no confidence in himself?

  41. The last posting under my wife’s name, appears to be from the same person that sent the vile cowardly messages to BFP this morning.

They obviously forget to change the indentification.

    Can ANYONE trace the sender?

  42. Adrian I provided you with some information on the matter of tracing the source of these wicked postings.

  43. My friends this merely the beginning of the threats, the smut, the verbal attacks, the physical attacks, the slime, that is the plan of a desperate ruling party on its last legs and facing the reality that sooner rather than later they will be forced to face the courts of this island for fraud, bribery, stealing, corruption and misuse of taxpayers monies.

What we have to realise is that, this gathering of politicians are the most dishonest bunch ever gathered in the House of Assembly and they themselves know what they have been doing in terms of their extent of the stealing that they have been part of.

They have a real reason to try to fight for power like never seen before in this country, for failure will lead to full exposure of their dishonest actions and by extension their destiny with a date at Dodds.

  44. This woman that was fired from Hardwood seem to be a very powerful woman in Barbados. She has brought a whole Government under a microscope.

Was there not a time when this same woman, Mr. Mascoll and Mr. P. Tanniss were big up friends. Maybe they are not such good friends now and that is where the problems come from

  45. You mean P. Tannis who is on the BLP facebook group? The fella who was fired from First Caribbean?

  46. Velzo what you really mean is the FACELESS bunch!!!

I really see no real necessity to return to the House of Assembly to debate this matter, the debate was started and the thing mottley aborted the debate in its wisdom to frustrate the Opposition party, this she achieved and what she did not plan for is that the Opposition’s decision to carry the debate to the masses and take the debate to the streets and every nook and cranny of this island, which in my view has much more impact and meaning and purpose than doing so in a corrupted Parliament of Barbados.

In the public domain ones does not suffer from biased political leanings and you are free to speak the truth without fear of the speaker’s ill informed rulings and his dishonestly against you because you belong to the other side of the fence.

The Hardwood story, judging by the site visit to BU appears to to be the issue of the straw that broke the camels back.

Its not the amount of money, it seems to be the accountability or lack of it.

Many people have attempted to minimise the issues of concern, but it has not worked and there are still questions unanswered.

Perhaps, most importantly, that this has been picked up the more responsible and questioning media overseas.

While, some spin doctors attempt to suppress free speech locally, others pick up on the control techniques and take it to a great level.

Remind me again, what is the listening audience of the BBC Caribbean service?

  48. I believe it is the blatant contempt with which individuals in government treat the ordinary citizen that has been the last straw.

I still find it unbelievable that all of them on the inside could condone this and not one speak out. Unbelievable! In their ignorance do they not see what they are doing to our great country?

  49. What a load of undiluted crap this idiot ASSCOLL is expounding on the radio now, he is an almight idiot.

That’s the guyI heard he was fired from Bank of Butterfield too.

Someone must be held accountable for this whole affair. Will Mr. Arthur be able to bell this cat?
