The video below captures a little boy – reportedly 4 years old – assisting his father on public service vehicle. There is the expected divide in opinion from various segments of the community, it is a polarized world after all where matters that should be deemed wrong or inappropriate are confused by a people who give priority to grey above black and white.

See the video.

The two main arguments offered to what portrayed in the video, 1. there is benefit to exposing the young boy to the world of business, 2. the environment is not suited, some advocates liken it to child labour.

Here is the opinion of businessman and social commentator Andrew Bynoe which appears in today’s Nation newspaper:

Look at core element of father’s alleged action

THE CORE ELEMENT of the four-year old child allegedly conducting on his father’s passenger van must not be shrouded in the surrounding aspects of his father’s reactionary behaviour to those who wanted to shame him. Here is an entrepreneur who wants to teach his son about the business. This is the core.

My father had cows, goats, sheep and, of course, pigs. At four years old, I was cleaning down pens, milking all except the pigs, feeding them and doing what a lil boy could do. It was around that age that I was despatching in a one-door shop.

According to those devout advocates who cannot distinguish what is child labour, my parents should have been taken to court, prosecuted and locked up. I should have been locked up too, for as babies my son and daughter were taken to AOne Supermarket in their reed baskets from where they watched on. At four years old, they were pushing customer trolleys back to the trolley station.

How holier than thou we have become.

– ANDREW BYNOE

A lowly blogmaster’s opinion about the matter is captured in the old adage, ‘manners maketh man‘.

I can tell whenever you get your hand on good stuff.
Bad stuff – scratching (abusic) or rantings
Good stuff – music and interesting comments

I am hoping that you get some really good stuff for Christmas.. please don’t ruin our next few days with your abusic (what you call music).

When I saw the holier than thou position taken by some and the involvement of the CCB, I could hardly resist.

The 2012 event with the child came to mind … similar ages perhaps..

Since the 2012 event also involved a woman in a starring role and the only woman taking a superior position was you know who I decided to have some fun.

My guess is she was a young adult in 1978, influenced like so many others by the crop over mentality and believing this was their culture.

    BTW

What remedy are you going to give her??

I don’t understand why some folks are so shocked at this event, for sure no one did anything about the 2012 event.

  4. A very merry Xmas to you as well Sarge, and blessings in the new year… 🙂
you will need them – cause umm aint looking good at all…

    BTW
What lime and salt what!!?? stop showing your age… and get with the modern ‘ghostbusters’…
Personally Bushie depends on the ‘Rod and Staff’ – even in the valley of shadows of death at the Garrison…

  6. It’s amazing the things our current political masters deem important and worthy of their attention.

Someone please tell Santia, that in the country; the water is still brown and unusable after every downpour, bush has reduced the two lane roads to one lane, and the road that links highway 4 to highway 4b missing.

  7. Can someone who has access to a PSV permit, explain for the hignorant and unimaginative, the grounds on which the permit was suspended in this particular case?

“explain for the hignorant and unimaginative, the grounds on which the permit was suspended in this particular case?”

the music police had an issue with the music selection and the dumb wack ass politicians got on the political bandwagon and put some political pressure to regulate the working man

  9. Why do I feel it necessary to repeat. It was not the music that caught my attention. It was the language being used and these were not our favorite cuss words. I suspect the young lad heard or will hear out favorite cuss words as the journey continues.

Truly, I am surprise at the stance taken by some; none, not one of those supporting the father and son would expose their young children to a continuous melody of obscene language.

Repeating, I do not know how or why the father permit got suspended. The father should have been told… Don’t take your son to work; find suitable child care or stay at home. Surely, he is making enough that he can pay for child care. If not, he could stay at home and offer child care to others (without cussing)

It is surprising that no mention is made of a mother or of grand parents.

  10. Grasshopper

Two of my nephews were cussing from kindergarten in the 1980’s.

    They learnt from another boy!!

Both went on to St. Winifreds and then QC.

One ended up with a vocabulary that big able men used to stop and listen in awe when somebody got him vex.

He put that aside as he went on in life and became a most respectable family man!!

    Just don’t get him vex!!

The language is not the problem, it’s what is put inside the boy by his father!!

  13. Your guess would be WRONG as usual, Johnny!
Cropover in the early days was not overly sexual at all. And yet, I was never caught up in it. Those were the days when we used to wine, not wuk up. And costumes were much more than a scrap of a bikini. Quite creative, they were.

And yet, I never partied or jumped for Kadooment.

    Just not my thing.

As for corrupting the morals of society, I have done no such thing.

Spend one hour talking to my son and you would take ALL of those words back!

No drinking, no smoking, no drugs, no womanising, no vulgarity!

    And NO CROPOVER!

Just plenty of plans for a meaningful life and hard work towards that goal!

And the same things I told him are the same things I told every other child with whom I have had contact.

Without being a total hypocrite and pretending never to have made a mistake.

And that is what makes me the best mother in the world, according to my son. Probably what made me a good youth worker too.

Turns out that its the hypocrisy that causes young people to close their ears.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Who are you kidding?

    It was always sexual.

What is the difference between wining and wukking up?

One of the saving graces is that Bajan lasses and lads have become fat and old so it may actually be less attractive than when it started.

We were fed the line that this was our culture, brought here from Africa and idiots that Bajans are fell for it hook line and sinker.

So, do you remember the song “pooch back and let your bumsie roll” from c. 1978 and would you say that described wining or wukking up?

  15. Your weak retort is analogous to that which says ‘white men can’t jump’. Whether Latino, Asian, African and others, sensuous movement of dancing has always been linked to creating an outlet for freedom of expression and piping ‘kinetic’ energy between liked souls. The issue of a declining culture is not directly linked to dancing as an act but more a symptom of overall decadence.

  16. You are WRONG. Crop Over was NOT sexual during the late 1970s. There weren’t any calypso songs in 1978 with the lyrics you are suggesting. If you could remind this forum of events occurring in the 16, 17 and 1800s, why can’t you remember the name of a song? Unless Google can’t assist you.

  17. Stupid Johnny,

Don’t you know the difference between lovemaking and making porn?

Don’t you know the difference between being sensuous and being vulgar?

Do you really not know the difference between a wine and a wuk up?

You can’t tell me that you don’t know the difference between a Sparrow and practically every other bird!!!!!!!

Yes, I remember the Madd song. Never liked it. Out of order in a church.

And I recall objecting when Lil Rick’s Hardwine was played on our rectory lawn. Rubbing an erect penis on a young lady’s backside was never acceptable to me in the name of dance. I don’t think that the priest and those in charge knew what a hardwine was though.

It was around that time that I conducted a session for our junior youth group regarding the music they enjoyed. They brought the tapes and I listened, with earphones on. Then we discussed things like “bitch” and “ho” and all the other negative stuff and how it polluted the minds.

You are barking up the wrong tree.

    Stop making yourself look foolish!

And by the way, sex is not only a part of life but it is THE WAY to life! We must be careful not to make it seem dirty. I always have.

  18. “Then we discussed things like “bitch” and “ho” and all the other negative stuff and how it polluted the minds.”

  22. I remember the song as well…… ‘Madd’s Revival Song.’ If that’s the calypso he’s actually referring to, it was 1993, not 1978. Members of Madd would’ve been youngsters at Combermere in 78.

  23. NorthernObserver Avatar

I recall, it was ’77 or ’78 and I attended Crop Over with a rather eclectic group on University house mates.
Somewhere. I think Baxter’s Rd area, we ‘lost’ one of the female members. I found her watching a group’s gyrations to “We want more”. Somebody had told her it was called “grinding”, so she quite naturally interpreted the words to be “we want more, grind her, we want more”.
She certainly interpreted it as sexual.

I had 78 stuck in my mind because I remembered hearing about the church fair where the DJ played this song and placed that in 1978/79 because of the source.

You are probably right about the 1993 which would make Donna much younger.

    I can’t help the compliments!!

You ain’t answering the question just introducing slow tunes and kaiso.

I don’t think there is a single mention of kaiso to date … by anyone, not even me!!!

    So, let me repeat!!

What is the difference between wining, wuking up and grinding?

Are you saying that grinding is done to slow tunes on the dance floor and wining and wukking up is done to kaiso?

Would you describe the little boy behind the woman as grinding, wuking up or wining ….. or just common?

Now if that is correct, therein lies the answer to your questions about the differences in movementations. 🤔

Just look at the negative feedback they evoke and you would have to assume they are popular.

Simple explanation of how I find them, or rather they find me.

Thomas Sowell I came across years ago and suspect I posted already a while back. He is up in his 90’s now and is immutable in his explanations of life. Those explanations invariably work and I like things that work. He started as a marxist so nice to see his transformation. Chomsky is boring and predictable and makes no sense.

Sometimes I look at Gravitas so I guess the internet keeps throwing the site at me. Takes no effort … extra light lifting, just look at the headline to decide if to watch. Thought the treatment of the aged in Japan was interesting so had a quick look and reckoned it would be of interest to the old codgers on BU as it may soon be our turn.

George Floyd I saw was in the news a month ago on Megan Kelly who sometimes I check out. This recent one arose I guess because I had looked at the beginnings of a Megan Kelly interview and the internet decided to throw it at me.

Always reckoned George Floyd was dying from before he stepped out of his car and the police arrived on scene. Fentanyl claims the lives of about 100K people in the US every year from month old babies to big able adults. Sometime the victim only has to touch it and Floyd was caught guzzling down tablets to hide evidence.

When I get a chance I will watch the documentary and decide if to say “I told you so”!!

His ass was grass from early.

I love the sites on the Bible because they fill a void left by my non extensive reading as a youth. The Bible stories and the Confirmation experience I was exposed to as a child I found appeal to something deep within me.

    Plus, the History is great.

For some reason any mention of the Bible seems to evoke the Dracula complex (fear of the Light) in some, can’t imagine why.

I like music but if doesn’t excite my interests as do other subjects. Sometimes I will post music videos where they apply but I am not in the league with say Hants … or even you.

  37. I don’t stress myself watching any videos posted by the Johnny. They are all tainted. Usually it’s just the toxic fare far right fools are fed by “conservative” media.

Not one thought is original. Nothing deviates from the script.

I am so glad he lived to contemplate what his irrational racism has accomplished in his life.

May every rabid racist share his fate!

  39. Somatic movement for the sake of movement aka dancing is good for the body, mind and soul, as you focus on your inner experience you move and expand your internal awareness and build up grounding energy of earth to the lowest root chankra grounding up to sacral chakra sexual energy centre, and move it further up to the higher spiritual energy centres of the mind, the third eye and crown, as a side-note or passing thought.. when comments do not make the grade for publication on the underground, they must still be captured upstream by the triumvirate of warmongers babylonian spies technologies, for their eyes only, top secret classified, code 007 ocean’s 11

  45. I am always amused, amazed or in pain, but can I experience all three emotions at the same time?

    Yes.

It pains, amazes and amuses me at how politicians in Barbados can throw Out nonsense to our public.

It pains, amazes and amuses me at how some will believe and will defend (with all sincerity) the nonsense that is given to them.

I am amused, but yet I cry.

  47. Q: Why do you stress the negative
A: It cannot be avoided. Too many spend time trying to spin these negatives as positives. Someone has to say “I see what you are doing”.

Q: Regardless of what Mia does you criticize her. In your eyes she can do no right.
A: She can do right. She can do better, but she chooses to hop on every plane that lands in Barbados. With a 30-0 win in two consecutive elections, she has done nothing transformative. New rules/laws are all jokes. We have a Teflon queen who can do nothing right, but her feet are not held to the fire.

Q: I detect a dislike of your fellow Bajans.
A:Wrong again. I am madly in love with my countrymen, but some of their characteristics are repugnant to me. They will try to act as if a wrong is the same as a right. They would remain silent in the face of murder; they are selfish and opinionated … Must I go on?

Q: Opinionated? They are three of you who think that you have the answers. One is a nutter/thumper, a next is a nut/fake thumper and yourself. You have different origins/circumstances, I can only conclude it is the school.

A: a bit long winded aren’t you. I wouldn’t blame those two nuts on the school. I have strong opinions, but I am always right … Why change?
