Barbados has always had a trend for celebrating a “maximum leader.”

We loved Errol Barrow and his accolades. We revered Grantley Adams and then his son Tom. Now we adore Mia Amor. Over and away we have other examples such as Dominica, Grenada and St. Vincent. But, is this trend healthy for a small island democracy?

A look at how events play out under such leaders show that support is consolidated, popularity is increased and machinations are employed to retain power. Decision making goes unopposed or unfettered. Allegations of infelicities disappear into the night. Opposition voices are stifled, or stifle themselves for lack of a persona equal in stature to he/she who leads from on high.

In Barbados, we have seen this leadership reap benefits in some instances. But we have also seen it bring a sense of arrogance, entitlement and a “I can do what I want” mentality. Tinkering with the constitution is now a norm. Double standards are now more open and blatant. Ignoring the “silent majority” is now also a trend, especially when tourist dollars or the macro economic picture is at play.

Similarly and negatively, the Freundel administration also practiced this, albeit, with foolish and arrogant abandon, disregarding the public it served. They ignored advice, plodded along with errant decisions and took the approach that “I am in charge.” 2018 speaks for itself.

But what really does this “maximum leader” bring?
After Tom died Bree took over and the rest is history.
After Barrow died Sandiford took over and the rest is history
After Thompson died Freundel took over and the rest is still an ongoing history

The maximum leader philosophy, rooted in a personality rather than collective progress can be dangerous. Without organs for continuity it gives a temporary illusion of success followed by a period of decline. Without sufficient controls and dissenting voices it gives rise to the Animal Farm mindset. Without an efficient fourth estate, it leads to a false perception of democracy and inclusion, which is really driven by public relations, marketing, psychological manipulation and popularity mining.

Think about it…
Is it truly a functional democracy when a leader can call an election whenever he or she feels like no matter the circumstances?
Is it truly a functional democracy when information is not free, integrity is not legislated and our elected leaders cannot be held to account other than at the ballot box?
Is it truly a democracy when those who control government, also fully control every aspect that regulates oversight and control of that government?
Is it truly a democracy when two-thirds of an electorate stay home leading to a 30-0?

A good democracy demands that government, civil society, labour and capital work together for the good of the people. Recent events have shown that at least three of these organs work together for the good of politics. The partisan divide, the whispers on the street and the frustration and despondency of many are the inevitable result.

We have always asked in this space, will the real leaders please stand up?
If ever there was a time for them, it is now.

How was power abused if it the law supports it? What citizens must do if it widely felt a snap election offends, is to inject fixed term limits in the national debate of the new Constitution.

Our constitution needs to be cleaned up. We need things like explicit freedom of choice amongst other things. Too many things in our constitution and laws depend on gentleman agreements.

It should be unconstitutional for a government to repeatedly renew states of emergency with curfews for two years without being forced to compensate individuals and businesses for losses due to said state of emergency.

Our policymakers behind the COVID state of emergency and curfews are only looking at inflated COVID case and death statistics and ignoring the other more personal losses and ill effects the restrictions are having.

  3. That is the EBC’s job. All communication from them stated the unit was ready. In fact Director Angela Taylor stated since 2019 the electoral office was readying for the bell. Also, why did the opposition parties, including your dear loving party, not voice concerns at meetings held with the EBC?

The snap election exposed the need for reform of existing laws. Neither political party have done anything over the years to address shortcomings. We will wait to see if the incumbent reverses this trend.

To be expected Mottley will live rent free in your head for another 5 years, maybe three or 5 years 3 months like Freundel.

  4. @CA

You are aware it is standard to include a force majeure clause in agreements. Does operating in a pandemic support arbitrary decisioning by governments?

    Xxxxx
The power was abused by not taking into full consideration all citizens rights to vote
All.illegality of the highest order which set out to erase one of the fundamental rights of the people in the Constitution
In other countries such a violation would be cause for removal of the leader
Also not putting in place proper channels or mechanisms to deal with that problem before she called the election
If it walks like a duck quacks like a duck
    It must be a duck

The citizens are too busy trying to survive and make ends meets under the self-imposed, unnecessary hardships we put on ourselves with COVID lockdowns to worry about a petty thing such as abuses of power.

If governments had not tried to micromanage every aspect with their hubris thinking they can succeed against mother nature and well accepted viral science. Our doctors would have done proper analysis and learnt how to treat covid cheaply over a year ago without all the limitations.

In years to come I fully expect studies to show the COVID measures were a Pyrrhic victory.

Any major impositions imposed under those circumstances must be short-lived and be extremely effective during that short period otherwise the measures can be deemed to have failed and caused more harm than good when looked at on a big picture scale.

We now need a force majeure clause to exit this pandemic agreement we have with our government and public health officials as their measures are not working. Government created their own when they wanted to have their gatherings and functions.

We were able to artificially suppress COVID cases and deaths via measures unsustainable in the long term. But did we also suppress deaths and instances of other ailments such as suicides and stress related ailments on a whole or did they increase.

  9. It seems the decision making process in our style of government as Observer in his piece opinies, circles back to the deference we pay to a maximum leader. Our system of governance makes it difficult for a system of checks and balances to intervene. Made worse by a citizenry that is disengaged for many reasons discussed ad nauseam in this space.

My view is government needs to bring transparency with full data, analysis and explanations behind their decision-making process and leave PR for the campaign platform.

An honest government has nothing to fear from transparency. Any government that fears transparency runs the risk of becoming a dishonest government.

Our system of governance makes it difficult for a system of checks and balances to intervene. Made worse by a citizenry that is disengaged for many reasons discussed ad nauseam in this space.

That is why a simple system of check and balances must be enshrined in our constitution to protect the disengaged citizenry from government overreach because they will become reengaged in the future and it will be difficult to fix then. We might have a benevolent leader now but what measures are there to limit future leaders who might not be so benevolent.

  12. @CA

Agree to a point but caution no man made system will work as intended unless persons operating within the system come to the jobs with integrity. This is the point at which the checks and balances must be as relevant as is practicable in a man made system.

It has to start with the constitution with the addition of Freedom of medical choice to the list of freedoms and restructuring the parliamentary structure to limit powers and build in more transparency.

Too many people are starting to play god with other people lives and livelihoods.

  14. @CA

It is very difficult to govern a collective and at the same time recognize individual perspectives.

  15. “So I am not sure what people mean when they talk about Victorian values.”

Victorian values is not discussing sex and being ignorant about these matters and was a way to control and oppress people
Women were considered weaker and more innocent

  16. Sexuality was oppressed, people had 10 children because only 3 of them would live to be adults

  17. Victorian refers to the era not the person

A very well written piece, if it does not change certain mindsets, means it will NEVER HAPPEN.

“As for the Public Order Act, your position is that held by most. However, underpinning that decision was ultimately a desire to ensure that the white Barbadians knew that we will all be executed if they ever got to feeling too uncomfortable.
In other words without saying it , the Act was nothing more than a vicious assault on Black freedom of speech and political activity .
There will be a time to pay for that and other atrocities that were committed .”

what amazes me is that BOTH EVIL corrupt governments still have the Public Order Act in place and don’t plan to remove it ever, still PLAN TO SUPPRESS BLACK RIGHTS…….what amazes me even more is the all out BATTLE i had on BU exposing these nasty, lazy parasitic minorities, although everyone knows about them…but some still tried to cover it up…and REFUSED to address the crimes they commit against the Afrikan descended, that’s why i took that battle further afield until i made sure it was read EVERYWHERE…

“The PM has gone silent and her AG must now be the laughing stock of all his contemporaries.” 🤣🤣

    too late RoB…the banana republic.

“Too many people are starting to play god with other people lives and livelihoods.”

oh they are going to end up killing a lot of people, just hope the Nuremburg process that people have started gets some arrest warrants for these local small, power hungry idiots..

the day people understand that they have to STOP looking at useless mankind to lead them, man was NEVER MEANT TO LEAD US…we already have our designated leaders and if ya don’t know who they are, you are lost……

“Oh! you can’t ask them. You don’t dare to get all up in the business of your adult sons and daughters.”

i don’t DARE question my adult children and grandchildren’s actions, decisions etc….or mind their business…….although they love to question mine and mind my business..

unless some voted you into the taxpayer funded parliament and ya sucking on taxpayer’s salary, then you owe THE PEOPLE an explanation for EVERYTHING you do and say especially when ya lying, ducking, weaving and DECEIVING…

  20. No Hants, one may question how the decision was made seemingly without consultation. I too was surprised and the people should never be surprised that they have a new hero!

However, Rihanna probably was not aware of the process. I see no need to tear the woman apart and sour her on Barbados.

With respect to the criteria – what sacrifices did Gary Sobers make?

None. He lived his life his way and maximised his talent to his own benefit.

However, in doing so he inspired a nation, lifted our spirits and caused many not only to dream of world class excellence but to have the confidence that it could be achieved. He took things up a notch. And he gave the colonisers’ a serious black eye. He probably saved the sanity of many West Indians living in England.

Sporting heros must be judged in different ways. So should creatives . Personal sacrifice is not necessary. They should be judged on the impact they had on our collective psyches.

And Gary Sobers was so judged.

Creatives should be judged in that same way.

But Rihanna’s influence has now soared beyond the song and dance.. Music is something in which black people have long forced their way out of the shadows and taken their rightful place world in the world. The world’s favourite artistes have admitted that their roots lie in black music. No black people, no Beatles and no Stones. Elvis’ black influence was obvious.

Hitler’s humiliation was recorded and denying our sporting prowess eventually made the world look as stupid as he did. They have, more or less, reluctantly conceded decades ago.

There are numerous very successful black entrepreneurs worldwide.

Most of them are hidden like the figures who were instrumental in sending the first white men to the moon. The myth of inherent white superiority in the area of business acumen continues. Not to mention MALE superiority!

A little girl from Westbury Rd is taking the world by storm and inspiring little black girls, not only Barbadians to BELIEVE!

I will not be a part of any nit picking and unfair misogynistic scrutiny that attempts to derail what we have long acknowledged is our MAJOR NEED AND OBJECTIVE!

    A WEALTH CREATING MINDSET!

Old farts minds may be stuck gaping at exposed breasts and peeping at the outline of vaginas and tut tutting while they lust.

And envious old women may scream “common class” while wishing they had been lucky enough to have a body worth flaunting, that could make more men lust.

STOP LOOKING AT RIHANNA AND TAKE A LOOK AT YOURSELVES!

I understand where Mia is going with this one. It was poorly executed. But the woman is looking past old farts and disgraced so-called Christian denominations and their hypocritical blind eyes.

She is looking towards the young people who see the hypocrisy and they tut tut at THAT!

  21. Our Supreme Leader will continue to prevail and save Barbados from the treacherous opposition.

Thank you, Supreme Leader, that a DLP grandee is now wearing an orange jumpsuit. This would also look good on other DLP grandees. Time for a vacation in Florida. Let’s see how many return.

    @CA

The PM committed an illegal act by calling a snap election?

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Maybe not but she ended up with the 30 – 0 farce and the inability to form a new GOB except through potentially insurrection!!

She also exposed her former Government as unconstitutional!!

I think she is the big loser

… actually everybody loses as she ends up having to go back to the people who really don’t need this crap again.

It is going to be interesting to see if she repeats the unconstitutional no opposition government.

If she goes back to the people and admits her previous Government was unconstitutional the people would be quite in their rights to toss her having clear evidence of the error of her ways and her willingness to act unconstitutionally and comit insurrection.

Either way she is a loser.

Somehow she has to pretend her way through this one.

Her problem is she is a lawyer and can’t claim not to know what the Constitution has to say about an opposition.

She has already been to court and got the opposition challenge to the snap election tossed on a technicality so besides being a lawyer she has access to pretty sharp lawyers.

She ends up looking bad either way, her legacy will be she breached the constitution, which is insurrection.

She could claim she only saw the light after 3 years and called the snap election to solve the unconstitutionality but no one is going to buy that.

Ignorance is no excuse of the law, especially if you are a lawyer with unfettered access to other lawyers.

“Ignorance is no excuse of the law, especially if you are a lawyer with unfettered access to other lawyers”

    ..

  26. https://www.britannica.com/topic/insurrection-politics

insurrection, an organized and usually violent act of revolt or rebellion against an established government or governing authority of a nation-state or other political entity by a group of its citizens or subjects; also, any act of engaging in such a revolt. An insurrection may facilitate or bring about a revolution, which is a radical change in the form of government or political system of a state, and it may be initiated or provoked by an act of sedition, which is an incitement to revolt or rebellion.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Maybe that’s why there were 29 ministers back in 2018.

She made sure every body’s hands were dirty, which suggests she probably had a revolt on her hands when some MPs started to realise what she had implicated them in and rebelled.

You will probably find some of those MPs in 10 potential seat warmers who now have to opportunity to expose the mess, except, their hands are as dirty as the rest.

    Best to start again!!

  27. Resignations definitely in order here.

  28. Cuhdear,

  29. “Music is something in which black people have long forced their way out of the shadows and taken their rightful place world in the world. The world’s favourite artistes have admitted that their roots lie in black music.”

Do Blacks living in Europe and America have a culture
Strange how their music expression is rhythmic and tribal like an African Drum

  30. It seems as though we’re being selective relative to our use of the Bible, choosing to adhere to the principles therein when it suits our particular purpose or agenda.

On one hand, we admonish Dr. GP for presenting a Biblical perspective on issues, but, on the other hand, we’re ‘crying shame’ because national heroine, Rhianna, is pregnant out of wedlock.

Ironically, some persons on BU supported the novelty of a prostitute, Natlee, contesting the 2018 general elections as an independent candidate for the City…… hoping she would’ve won and became the Parliamentary representative…….

……. while asking people to IGNORE her social media videos, in which the scantily dressed lady can be seen and heard being overly abusive, exhibiting lewd behaviour and informing all and sundry that “Harry like to eat botsy.”

One guy even ‘said’ she would’ve made an invaluable contribution to social policy.

  31. Who are the three who resigned before elections?

Bostic, John King and Ronald Toppin.

Both Bostic and John King are not lawyers and would not know how to pussyfoot around a charge of insurrection.

Ronald Toppin is a year or so younger than I am so he is not young and probably knows and got out when the getting was good.

Almost lost Duguid too, a non lawyer.

  32. My position of “the naked red woman” is no different from a man of the cloth who took his position long before it became known she was even pregnant!!

  33. Sex is deemed to be uncouth and dirty with guilt feelings attached to peoples urges and actions, and is something which lower class primitive people have less control of. Rihanna’s music is for America not Barbados and America does not even know about the Bajan class system. Rihanna would not have been popular in Barbados with the same music.

  34. Countries views towards sex could have been looked at as the type of mainstream porn approved by censors and legally available (before internet on world wide web). Europe and USA was different to UK.

Sadly it seems that he had a very difficult upbringing. No doubt institutional/structural racism had something to do with it. The Unites States [and Europe too] are a places extremely hostile to black people and especially to BLACK MEN. Don’t ever let us pretend otherwise.

My own brother the gentlest of souls had to cut the ass of the nearest British white woman just after a group of “Teddy Boys” had beaten-up the recent immigrant walking innocently along the street. He could not beat them, but he beat the next British woman he encountered on the street. She had to hold the lashes for them.
