In this case the opening up of the country with an improved quarantine requirement although still aggressive makes this a timely submission. The virulent Delta variant is lose in the UK. The UK is one of Barbados’ main source market for tourist arrivals. Barbados was recently listed on UK’s Green List. – David, blogmaster

Barbados Set For £270 Million Cash Boost From British Tourists Following Inclusion On UK Green List

Brits are set to splash out a whopping £270 million on trips to Barbados this year, new analysis has revealed.

While many holidaymakers missed out on a summer break abroad last year, new data suggests more than 170,000 Brits will jet off to Barbados once travel restrictions are eased.

The prediction by travel health experts Practio follows the news that the UK government has added Barbados to its green travel list meaning Brits won’t have to quarantine upon their return from holiday.

The forecast will be welcome news for businesses across the island with UK tourists set to start entering the country from Wednesday, June 30.

Analysing 10 years of historic Office for National Statistics data, looking at every single trip made out of the country by UK citizens, researchers at Practio have been able to forecast the holiday destinations set to benefit the most from reduced travel restrictions.

With traditionally popular European tourist destinations including Spain and France requiring Brits to quarantine for 10 days upon their return, Barbados is in line for a bumper summer with spend from British tourists set to top the forecasted £271,122,898.

On average, sun-starved Brits are expected to spend £1,524 per visit

Commenting on the research, Dr Jonas Nilsen, managing director and co-founder of Practio said:

“We wanted to pull this exhaustive research together to understand UK travel trends over the past ten years, but also to give us an idea of what this means for travel in the future. Travel was mostly out of the question in 2020 and many of us are hoping for its return later in 2021. By predicting future trends, we can better equip travellers and businesses that thrive off tourism by helping them to prepare for what’s to come and how they can make the most of Brits’ travel habits.

“It’s also been great to see some of the emerging trends and how travel is changing, we’re seeing the go-to destinations start to change with more money being spent in countries further afield, which should be a good sign for the future of the travel industry beyond the pandemic.”

That is 6500/week for each and every week beginning July1 thru end of 2021. That is likely a stiff number in the Sep-Nov period.

  4. Donna, hence the reason my lips sealed.

  5. @Enuff

A fully vaccinated Brit has the potential to deliver Delta to us.

Dumb Enuff…can only think of tourism dependency, is it because of the money launering opportunities so what about the next pandemic or next disaster where TIEFING HOTELIERS tief employees severance and salaries…ignorance knows no bounds…tourism pimp..

  8. Wait this was a gift to past govt by Mia
Barbados can’t tax there way out of debt
Now my gift to Mia Barbados can’t borrow it’s way out of debt

    Xxxxxx
Govt has embarked on a borrowing spree at the tune of 1.3 billions plus 20o million being added to the ongoing debt
It seems as if Mia words only applies to a few but not to herself
Borrowing has become a new norm by this govt founded on a reason to fight COVId
However scientists has predicted that COVID would be here for a long time
Which begs to asked is govt going to keep on borrowing

  9. Only time will tell. According to a BBC news article –

“Operators contacted by the BBC were concentrating mainly on satisfying demand for the Balearic Islands, Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza, and Malta.”

And Steve Heapy, chief executive of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, said “bookings to Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Malta and Madeira have gone through the roof, which shows just how much UK holidaymakers want to get away.”

  12. History has proven that a country may move from the green list to the amber list at short notice, e.g. Portugal. See https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-57382162

  13. The classification list is obviously based on the ability of the country to effectively manage community spread read virus penetration. That said all service dependent countries are in the same boat. The virus will be with us for a time to come, we need to ensure the screening process is effective. We have to eat.

  14. @Tony Trotman,
I was about to make the same point. You forgot to add that we are once again seeing a huge spike in covid-19 cases within the UK. These cash rich tourists will will take the virus with them to Barbados.

    Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

    @ David

Have u not read that for fully vaccinated, virus load it to low for transmission to occur?

Its also the reason for not getting severely sick or dying

  19. @David,
This will all end in tears and very quickly. Why march an army to the top of the hill, if you will have to march it back down without any gain.

Thousands of Brits rushed to Portugal recently for some sun. The majority were forced to cut short their holiday short due to the downgrading of Portugal from green to amber status on the covid-19 traffic light system.

The era of the short-term visitor is unsustainable in the short, medium and perhaps long term in the Caribbean. Covid-19 has raised the profile of the fragility of our environment and how best we can protect it. This will have a major impact within our region and should suggest to us that there will never be a return to normal in our tourist industry.

I am not certain if you boys and girls in the Caribbean are up to track with the reality of this situation. The UK are about to offer three vaccine shots per person and at the same offer a flu shot to that same individual.

    https://youtu.be/mzcfJQO5pCQ

  20. WHO has issued a request for vaccinated people to wear their mask because of the Delta variant

  21. @TLSN

How do you recommend the government proceed? We have a one leg economy, if we do not find ways to earn forex to pay our import bill we have to borrow. We will have to default on loans, again. Many of you are on the blog railing about the government needing to do this and that, where is the money to come from? The SD by government has screwed its credit with local financial market. Covid 19 has screwed up a lot. We are in a bind.

  22. Bangladesh in turmoil. Sydney Australia in retreat; and Israel request their citizens to mask up whilst indoors due to an exponential rise in covid-19, never mind that over 60% of their adult population has been vaccinated.

I repeat does the GOB comprehend what’s happening in the real world of Covid-19.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-australia-57621552

  23. @TLSN

Again, what do you recommend? Close our borders for the foreseeable future?

  24. @ David,
My views are not welcome here by a cove of cabalists.

I would disagree with you that covid-19 has srewed up Barbados. Covid-19 has exposed the fact that our economy was built on sand.

  25. “How do you recommend the government proceed? We have a one leg economy, if we do not find ways to earn forex to pay our import bill we have to borrow.”

If the Government of Barbados bets $200,000,000 on Germany to beat England in 90 minutes on Tuesday at odds of 32/17 they will scoop $576,470,588.235*

(provided Germany wins in normal play)

  26. @TLSN

You comment is a cop out. All SIDs have been negatively impacted by COVID 19. Please debate the issues honestly.

  27. @ David,
We should concentrate on long term visitors; whilst short term visitors should be quarantined in jail-like structures for a minimum of two weeks.

  28. @TLSN

Given you bucket of wisdom who do you project would agree to a 2 week quarantine in jail like structures?

    #askingforafriend

  29. Tourism as govt expect it would never be the same
There are plenty inclusive and burdensome problems attached to travelling because of COVID
Many govts have implemented laws and portocols which seems like a prison sentence instead of going on a fun vacation
Vacation and holidays are supposed to be fun and entertainment
Hard to envision tourist repeating more of the same restrictions in any vacation pkg in the foreseeable future plus high cost
Govt will be forced to seek other outlets to garnish revenue for their countries

  30. David
Isn’t there a plan to also relax the protocols for persons returning from countries on the amber list? In any event, what list Bdos on? TT economy is not built on tourism; but its economy still catspraddled and borrowing. Many also ignore or are unaware of how the jolt to tourism is mashing up major city economies….keep thinking it’s an island thing.

  31. @ David,
Remove the scales from your eyes; we are not going to witness a bounce back in the tourist industry and this applies to every single country in the world.

We are living in a period of famine.

  32. @TLSN

You have moved the discussion after your outrageous recommendation was challenged. It is easy to post ish on a blog however uneasy upon the head who wears the crown.

    Xxxxxcc

Not all economies are built around tourism
    Get real
Large countries have other industry to buffer the fall out from tourism
Barbados has been too heavily dependent on tourism
Now the chickens have come home to roost
The question to be would govt learn a lesson or keep repeating more of the same
There is a wide world industry in the Health Food Market which govts have overlooked and if we’re given hard thought would have been a helping force in keeping our economy alive
Where there is no vision the people perish

  34. @enuff

TT economy was already tanking pre-covid because of declining oil and natural gas prices.

  35. Is Barbados a large country blessed with natural resources? The first thing we learned at school was that Barbados has limited natural resources and the greatest asset is the people. There is a reason why all SIDs in the Caribbean depend heavily on tourism. What we need to do is find ways to reduce reliance but successive government have gone the easy route, including the DLP and Richard Sealy. Ten years ago what was your cry? You are a hypocrite. It is why you have ZERO credibility on the blog. Your froth is motivated by political opportunism and we all know it.

  36. WURA-War-on-U Avatar

The same people/assets they routinely rob and discriminate against..

troubling but not suprising that most are citizens of the TINY isle of la la land, they are welcome to stay right there….while everyone watches in amazement and move on.

  37. WURA-War-on-U Avatar

With Barbados as their ATM, PROACTIVE Trinidad will be on their game in no time, soon come…they don’t sit back to wait and depend…..keep watching them, don’t blink.

  38. .. and the greatest asset is the people. ..

Unfortunately that is meaningless spiel that Government and Business put out
a bit like IIP Investors In People Brand Logo

people individually and collectively are deemed liabilities and threatsby the powers that be, who’s systems are designed to hold them and control them

  39. It is somewhat amusing to see an ‘argument’ rejected when brought up by Party A, but if you wait long enough you can see bits a pieces of the same argument given by Party B.

In the hands of party A, you are showing shade, discrediting the nation or a disloyal son or daughter. With party B it is thrown into the arena as a fact; there is little or nothing negative about the same facts.

After some elections Party A will become Party B and Party B will become A and some positions are flipped in the same manner. There is a fluidity of positions that is distressing.

I have always found it hard to believe that this two party system as practiced by us is beneficial in any way. The failure of a third party to take center stage is distressing. I now console myself that our best future lies in the hand of a benevolent dictator.

After the republic will we get Mia Kuan Motley. It may be better than the alternatives.

  40. It is applicable in the case of Barbados because we have no natural resources and have to draw on knowledge capital initiatives.

  41. Getting moved to the green is great news for us. However that green is not carved in stone. Look at Australia back in lock down due to the delta variant.

Also the uk has several documented cases of persons with both shots still catching the delta variant. Yes the risk is there that the visitors will bring the delta variant with them. So what is our option?

I said month ago it will come down to a decision where its based on a risk to reward factor. Well we have now reached that point. The island can not continue without tourism any longer. The government therefore have no option but to open our doors. In the last 2 years we have made no real attempt to diversify our economy so if we don’t open our doors to the virus what is plan B?

The answer sadly is there is no plan B.

  42. “The government therefore have no option but to open our doors.”

The tourists generally stay in hotel complexes and will not venture outside, which are effectively bubbles that they do not leave.

  43. WURA-War-on-U Avatar

With the dimmest of supporters egging them on, just imagine how much MORE OF A MESS they would sink the island into were it any bigger….just imagine not telling the people on the island that they WERE GIFTED a more efficient case management system for the judiciary and you fully understand the total asses ya dealing with, so don’t expect any better.

they are stupid enuff to try to use the gift to LIE to get votes for next election……

  44. Tourist stay in bubbles?

So wait all them white people i used to see in hired cars, on the pleasure boats, in duty free stores, bout oisitns, in the restaurants eating and walking bout the gap was white bajans then?

If we going discuss the risk let us at least use some semblance of reality as a basis for discussion.

  45. There is plenty of movement in the agricultural sector. Young people who previously deemed it unattractive are now keenly interested and being trained in agriculture and agribusiness. We must acknowledge this thrust.

We must also acknowledge the movement in the energy sector. Young people are being trained and the banks are on board.

I recently received an invitation to apply for a loan to set up my system.

Things are happening. It is not all doom and gloom.

But unfortunately, it is not enough to render tourism business as usual to be immediately unnecessary.

This will be a long process.

  46. @John A

A visit to any West Coast restaurant this week there is a mix of tourists and locals enjoying the dining experience.

  47. Let me clean up that comment for you, TLSN!

Your MISREPRESENTATIONS on BU of my daily life and the life of many in Barbados are CHALLENGED by a group of people who know better by virtue of their fifty plus years of living in Barbados.

By this I mean those of us who never felt like third class citizens at best, conditioned to accept poor service while lying at the bottom of a garbage heap.

If you have a problem with my true narrative of my life and the life of so many people who feel the same in Barbados, then that is YOUR PROBLEM.

    There!

  48. Barbados was blessed with natural resources from whence industries could have developed
But No our natural resources in the minds of some where not good enough to explore
Rather than exploring govts killed off many of these resources
    In today’s present environment
international countries are exploring their own natural resources mostly founded on environmental issues and from which revenue is derived

  49. Can you list these natural resources?

  50. “So wait all them white people i used to see..”

Use caution to avoid catching Covid by avoiding white people

do not speak to them or approach them and do not suck up to whitey for his and her money

there are no black brown or yellow tourists in Barbados
