Dear Editor

I was shocked to read your article in the Nation of 18 June, which reported that Minister of Culture, John King, is opposed to ‘dumping Nelson’.

Mr King is, of course, right that everybody can form their own personal opinions about any issue, including that of racism. However, the problem is that as Minister of Culture, he represents the people of Barbados. How would it reflect on our country if in international meetings he is defending the maintenance of statues glorifying racists and mass murderers even as countries all over the world are removing these offensive objects from the public space?

Mr King says that he has been reading the cabinet papers from previous discussions of this matter but demonstrates a shocking lack of understanding of the issue. I will pass without comment his preposterous statement that removing symbols that glorify racism, such as Nelson’s statue, amounts to visiting the horrors of chattel slavery on others. He appears to think that taking a stand against racism amounts to excluding non-Africans from the history of Barbados. According to this logic, every Bajan of non-African descent supports anti-African racism and the glorification of its architects. This is a terrible insult to those Bajans of non-African descent who strongly oppose racism and also demand the removal of statues and monuments that glorify it. Is John King not aware that the earliest rebellions in Barbados saw enslaved Africans and indentured Irish people fighting together against the oppressive powers of that time? Does he not see across the whole globe that millions of people of all nationalities and colours are taking a united stand against racism, and those who seek to glorify it?

The thing is that the foundation of racism, upon which modern Barbados was established, cannot be incorporated into any new Barbados in which we simply see each other as human beings because racism is opposed exactly to this concept and insists on categorising people into superior and inferior groups. That is why today, people are demanding that racism has no place in the modern world. You cannot defend racism and its symbols and at the same time claim to be against it. Would anyone take Germany seriously if it claimed to be against Nazism while maintaining statues and other monuments glorifying Hitler and the other leaders of the Nazi regime?

I wonder if Mr King’s comments about the parliament building, the wharf and elsewhere are serious comments. If they are, he really does have no understanding of this issue. Wasn’t Barbados itself around during slavery and playing a part in it? What are we to do with it? Throw it in the sea? The demand is very clear. Statues and monuments are some of the ways in which society honours individuals from the past. Those that glorify racists and people involved in the commission of crimes against humanity should be taken down from the public space because they are a statement that the society honours racism and crimes against humanity in the here and now.

There are, of course, many other issues in Barbados that need to be addressed in order to build a new and inclusive society that works for all Barbadians. However, we will make no headway with these if we are unable to confront and overcome the monster of racism that still disfigures our island. The taking down of Nelson is a small step in this effort.

On this issue, Minister King is quite simply wrong.

King not on board with dumping Nelson

MINISTER OF CULTURE John King is not in support of the wholesale removal of Lord Nelson’s statue in The City.

He told the media yesterday his opinions on Nelson and race on the whole were personal and he would stick by them, even if they cost him.

“There are a number of papers I am now studying, from about 2009, on discussions various Cabinets would have had on this issue, but on a personal note – and I know what I am about to say is going to upset a lot of people – I would agree that if you’re talking about Heroes Square, there are validations to the varied opinions. But I will not – and it could cost me everything – be a part or party of trying to do to others what we say has been done to us,” he said.

Calls for the removal of the statue were made again during last Saturday’s protest march through Bridgetown in support of the Black Lives Matter movement in the United Sates and across the world.

King said he did not believe in “stripping down everything and throwing it away”, saying there was a history before slavery and it was now time for a new mindset.

“If you are saying that during enslavement and the colonisation process, that our history, culture and way of life were wiped out and we came into places like the Americas as minorities, why would you now turn around and advocate to do the same thing to somebody else? The discussion we should be having is, if we want to remove this statue, where do we put it?

“How do we recognise the collective history of Barbados is not relegated solely to Barbadians of Afro descent? How do we also incorporate the history of the indigenous people who were here [first]? How do you incorporate

all of the groups that make up Barbados? Let us look at these things for what they are and use them to inspire ourselves to change our prejudices and look at each other as human beings,” he urged.

King said the Parliament Buildings

and the Wharf were around during slavery and played a part in it, asking if those too should be thrown away. He said the Nelson statue should be utilised to the advantage of Barbados while not disadvantaging anyone.

As for the Black Lives Matter movement, King, who as a calypsonian and Pic-O-De-Crop monarch performed social commentaries such as

Fool’s Paradise, How Many More? and I Want A Plantation, said he was accustomed to speaking out against social injustice on his own and would only join any group if and when he felt it necessary.

“I’ve always been advocating against racism, as an entertainer performing overseas and from growing up in England, so I know it well. What is going on in the Unites States has been going on for eons but it is now easier to see due to social media.

“[However] there are other issues right here I don’t hear people talking about, issues some people don’t want to protest, such as classism, which is also a knee on people’s necks. We need to talk about the violence in our own communities . . . and I don’t hear anyone talking about the history of the people we call ‘red legs’ in St John. I hope our future generations find themselves in a different place,” he said.

The intent is very clear Miller…he is such an a*shole he can’t see that less than 2,500 indians on the island cannot sway any vote when the majority Black population that they are intent once again to disenfranchise in Barbados and who number a whopping 260,000,000 plus in population size and when they say the corrupt government MUST , 2,500 racist indians voting can never help any of them to stay, and NEITHER can less than 8,000 racist minorities….he is such a sell out he can’t even do the math…

@John…. You are so kind aren’t you…oh woe are we that the wondrous former massa “…the testator would use his will to give freedom to his slave or slaves and bequeath them land”. No wonder you are so proud of YOUR brethren ….. One appreciates that you are continually laughing at us the descendants of those former slaves as you “warm [our] cockles”… so enjoy your twisted recounting of historical facts.

It’s been an eye-opener to see the depth of hate and disdain which makes you the man you are today!

Also, a shocker to realize that there too many Bajan folks like you who brag of their excellent evidence based scientific training that are capable of so publicly corrupting facts – facetiously or otherwise- to suit their biases!

    What a waste!

It is even clearer that the gang of crooks in the parliament will be exposed for that evil shit they dreamed up to sabotage the Black majority reparations from UK…they are not getting away with any of this for sure…too damn stinking minded and evil that is what is wrong with them…the guillotine might even be too good for them only because it’s swift and final…these deserve to suffer both mentally and physically…and for many decades.

whoops…too many zeros, so sorry there is not the land mass available for that size population to chase all their wicked nuisance parasite tails off the island of Barbados…

the majority Black population that they are intent once again to disenfranchise in Barbados and who number a whopping 260,000 plus in population size

We have always known from children that the black faces in the parliament in the last 60 years never wanted to see the black majority with anything, never wanted to see them self sufficient nor independent nor wealthy as they have demonstrated over the last 50 plus years post independence scam, so it’s quite clear they are now implementing a form of SABOTAGE regarding reparations for their own people and clearly still do not want to see the people with anyting they can call their own, still trying to keep them subservient and OPPRESSED and in generational poverty…and that will be outlined for everyone to see and understand..

just look at whom this idiot Comissiong is promoting for reparations, indians who are NOT ENTITLED TO ANY REPARATIONS regarding enslavement of their ancestors….because their ancestors were never enslaved..

does everyone see the intent to sabotage the black majority and their cause now..

“Let them see what it feels like to be victims of British white racism the same way the black West Indians of the Windrush generation had to endure.”

just as Miller pointed out regarding Windrush…not one of these frauds in the parliament ever said one word against that racist and brutal treatment of the Windrush generation by the May government and that is very recent, but they still can’t find their voice, Mia however made it her personal business to volunteer 50 more black people to endure that kind of UK bruatlity and for 8 pounds and hour right up until she was exposed..

..so we definitely know where they all stand on racism, they are still using it as a weaponized tool of destruction against the black people on the island and will NEVER SPEAK OUT AGAINST IT let alone end it in Barbados, they are wannabe slavemasters who must be chased out of the parliament..

    Facts are facts.

I suspect there was a catch to the bequest of freedom and land.

I suspect freedom was given only to those slaves who became Christians and could atleast read.

I suspect freedom (or slavery) was a matter of choice for the slave.

  9. What came at emancipation in Barbados and other colonies was education and religious instruction, paid for by an established Church, funded by grants of land, money and goodwill from the former owners.

In America at the end of the Civil War former slaves were given neither.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forty_acres_and_a_mule

They created their own opportunities for both religious instruction and education.

  11. Lawd fadda!🤣🤣🤣

  12. lawd fadder this…

DBLP governments have never been good for Barbados’ Black population and NEVER WILL BE…

ah don’t even know who this political party is, but they are not lying…DBLP have always been infested with sell outs, wannabe slavemasters and thieves..

    “United Progressive Party
    Sponsored ·
    YET ANOTHER BOSS MOVE

The Barbados Labour Party having the good fortune to have amassed 30 seats with one defection thus far was expected to use its mandate from the people with care. This has not been the case when it comes to amending the Supreme Law of the land, the Constitution. And the United Progressive Party sounded the alarm from early.

The first significant act of this BLP administration was to amend the Constitution to ensure that a couple of their friends could sit in Parliament. There were those who argued that the time limits preventing their assumption of office was unimportant because of the great skills which they would bring to the transformation of Barbados. We are almost half-way into the term and yet we can see nothing remotely approaching competence far less brilliance coming from these individuals.

THE GOVERNMENT CAN CHANGE THE LAW AT WILL

With the Government controlling 97% of the votes in the lower house the Constitution is not safe. Bear in mind that the Parliament can pass any piece of legislation with a Two-thirds majority. Do the current members of Parliament understand the importance of our Constitution? You could not tell by listening to their contributions in the House. And with media personnel and political analysts who have discarded any efforts at objectivity the Barbados democracy has found itself in a rather precarious position.

CIVIL SERVANTS MONEY TO PROVIDE CONTRACTS

Tinkering with the Constitution is a favourite pastime of this Government. The latest is the BOSS. Even though kite flying was limited because of COVID-19 this Administration flew quite a few kites to gauge public reaction. Their PR man is clearly working over-time. They have attempted to patch up the forced savings scheme with a number of pretty graphics and presentations which went out on social media. The Government has always been clear in its intention. It is going to force public officials to sacrifice use of their own money in order to create contract opportunities for those in the private sector who usually make a living from large Government contracts.

    STILL FORCED SAVINGS

Since that looked too shockingly bad they back pedaled and said it would not be a forced savings scheme because Civil Servants could opt in or opt out. Well the fact that the legislation states that the bonds would be issued in the names of public officials at the outset without their consent meant that that act alone would be unconstitutional. Then a ragged piece of plaster was applied to the provision by stating that if the Civil Servants did nothing they would get their remuneration in cash. So why are you putting the bonds in their names in the first place then? Something smells fishy.

    UNIONS AND MEDIA COMPROMISED

The UPP notes that for the first time in decades perhaps stretching back to pre-independence the workers of Barbados find themselves in a position where they have no union to canvass strenuously on their behalf. To issue bonds in the name of public officials without their consent would violate the Constitution had it not been cured by its passage of a Two-thirds majority. The Government has no credibility where bonds are concerned. Any protection in the legislation can be removed by a two-thirds majority in Parliament, which the Government has. Why would anyone opt in?

    CIVIL SERVANTS UNDER THE GUN?

Is this the thanks the front line workers get? So what about the Civil Servants who do not opt to participate in the BOSS? Will they be first to be put on the bread line when more lay-offs come? Will those who opt in not be doing so under duress or undue influence – a concept recognized in law? The writing on the wall is ominous. No objective unions, few objective media and no objective political analysts. As an opposition the UPP will continue to make its voice heard on behalf of the people.”

There you have it all, black folks!

Straight from the Bajan mulatto horse’s mouth!

You nig***gers have already received your reparations in the form of religious instruction from the book rewritten under the auspices of the white devil called King James.

Never mind the slave owners received their massive monetary share of the slavery compensation payout pie indicating that blacks are still considered to be intellectually and morally incapable of handling money.

What are Bajan blacks waiting for? The promise of 4 acres and a mulatto to comfort black fools like Sir Hilary?

  14. Miller…we all know who the enemies of Black people are on the island, we always knew hatred for anyone black started in DBLP governments post slavery when they were allowed to crawl into the parliament, trickled down to their useless no good yardfowls, has always been in the racist minority community and among the black faces who hate being called black, the wannabe whites…the pretend coloreds etc…it is a social disease as noted by those now studying its clearly destructive properties..

  15. Interesting predictions from 1969

  16. Neat clip from 1969

  17. This is well known, the contempt and racism continues for Caribbean people in UK, including Bajans, do you hear the frauds in parliament speaking out against or calling for reparations/compensation for Caribbean/Bajan Windrush victims of it, of course not, because they know if they condemn it in UK, they will have to also CONDEMN AND DISMANTLE IT in Barbados and that they do not want….it does not fit into their selling out and tiefing from their people…

I think it was Miller asking about Republic status for the island…we remembered when Fruendel ran up to UK all hot and sweaty boasting in their media that Barbados was going republic, he did not mention any of that to the people in Barbados though…in no time at all we NEVER HEARD THAT TALK AGAIN…not a whisper….and the same can be attributed to the Arthur government, he also had bigly grandiose plans for Republic….until he didn’t

ah never thought i would say this but i do believe that they found out that they do not own the island, never will and a damn good thing too…..

“In theory, however, it is still technically possible for the British Parliament to REPEAL the Barbados Independence Act which granted Her Majesty-in-Council the power to make Barbados’ Independence Order,” the report adds.”

and i never thought i would ever say this either but, with their wannabe slavemaster, brutal mentality toward their own people…this is either the unintended consequence of holding on to the power granted to cousin Elizabeth OR…they know the half humans they created better than we do, that is probably the only reason why it never happened and the population not sold into wholesale slavery by the wannabe black face slavemasters in the parliament…life is indeed funny.

“For the past three months, Jacqueline McKenzie says her front room has been covered with Windrush compensation files. Since lockdown, she has stopped going to the offices of the law firm she co-founded in 2010 and has been working from home. But her study is too small to accommodate the huge amount of paperwork that goes with the 200 separate claims she is filing on behalf of people affected by the Home Office citizenship scandal, during which thousands of people were wrongly classified as illegal immigrants because they could not prove they were British citizens.

“I think they are treating people with contempt,” she says. She is frustrated at the slow progress towards paying compensation to people who lost their jobs or their homes, were denied healthcare or the right to travel, or who were, in extreme cases, detained and deported. Part of the problem, she says, lies with the structure of the scheme, which requires claimants to gather large amounts of documentary proof of the losses they have incurred as a result of being miscategorised as unlawful residents (a problem that often arose because those affected were unable to gather the large amounts of documentary proof required to show that they had been living legally in the UK since the 1960s).”

  18. “I suspect freedom (or slavery) was a matter of choice for the slave.”

A next scholarly statement. Anxiously waiting on the Statistics for those who chose slavery over freedom.

So am talking to a very articulate friend this morning and he believes what is happening in Barbados is called “captive legislature” …we can throw mutliple ideas out there because we are free to regarding that comment but we are well aware who was captured in that shitshow, who are the captives and who did the capturing with the help from the traitors in the parliament…i think he put it quite nicely, nicer than i woud for sure…..

in saying that…don’t want to see any republic status under these current rats nor the ones before them, their partners in crimes. ..it will never end well for the majority.

  20. WURA-War-on-U Avatar

Miller…at least we got a few things right, we knew there was a capture that went on, we knew minorities are making decisions in the parliament that they have no right making for and detrimental to the majority population to benefit themselves, we knew the TRAITORS of DBLP allowed it to happen in the last 50 years
because their BRIBES ARE THEN SECURE…

so it totally makes sense now,

a bunch of thieves captured the legislature,

a bunch of traitors/thieves calling themselves leaders continue to enable and maintain that capture all at the people’s expense……

hence it will always feel like the majority population are captured slaves, their wealth creation and generation were captured and so too their money in the treasury, pension fund along with any loans and grants they generate from the international partners..

and unless that cycle is broken, hopefully with all the criminals involved in handcuffs, it will only continue into another generation.

  25. I know some people on BU do not appreciate the law, but this case is now sub judice. It is up to the chairman to enforce this. If I was Mr Parris’ lawyer I will bring comments on BU as evidence that he could not get a fair jury trial in Barbados.
In any case, if charged and brought before the courts this should be an interesting trial.

WE WISH TO REWRITE HISTORY AND ERASE ANYTHING WHICH DOES NOT FIT IN WITH OUR MODERN DAY BETTER THAN THOUGH FEELINGS.

THE PEOPLE OF THAT TIME WERE TERRIFIED OF THE FRENCH AND FRENCH RULE, BOTH WHITES AND BLACKS FELT THE SAME WAY.

‘The people of that era were terrified that the French would win and Barbados become a French colony. It was the Battle of Trafalgar that was the turning point and resulted in us being and English Colony without ever changing. The people showed their appreciation by building the statue. We now have no fears nor worries about becoming French and perhaps could not care less about Nelson, Trafalgar nor the French from our comfortable situation. However we should respect the wishes of our ancestors and hope that our children’s children would respect our choices.

They felt so strongly that when Nelson won the Battle of Trafalgar they were so happy and relieved that they spent their own money to have the Stature commissioned and erected.
You cannot ask for a greater indication and demonstration of their intent and support
Today we are here safe and relaxing and deciding to spit their faces and basically tell them that they were wrong and out of place to do that.

…We have to understand the fear of a French Invasion the people, all of them, had. There was no wireless communication, telephones nor WhatsApp. That’s why there were signal stations all along the coast. That is why Gun Hill exists. A sail on the horizon could very well be the lead ship of an invasion fleet. Imagine living under that constant threat for over 100 years! Trafalgar was a pivotal battle in world history and changed the history of the Atlantic World. It was only after that, that some European countries, which had been sitting on the fence, started to side with England against Napoleon and made it possible for the Royal Navy to implement a blockade which eventually strangled him.

The battle at Trafalgar was against the combined French and Spanish fleets and was devastating. Fast forward the tape to the mid-twentieth century. The Battle of Stalingrad, also one of the most pivotal battles in world history, was not the last battle of WW 2, but after that, it was clear Germany couldn’t win. Note the parallel. The statue was erected to commemorate the VICTORY. And it was that victory which made it possible for Barbados to evolve and develop in the way it has. We have to acknowledge and come to terms with our history, as painful as much of it is. Trying to obliterate aspects of it will not achieve that.

…THE BLACKS WERE ALSO SUPPORTIVE ON THE DECISION TO CELEBRATE NELSON BECAUSE THEY KNEW HOW THE FRENCH TREATED THEIR SUBJECTS.

  34. Before We Destroy Nelson’s Statue

The Prime Minister has wisely decided that any decision to remove Nelson’s statue, would be done after consulting the public. The only meaningful way to consult the public on a matter like this, is with a national referendum.

A reported 10,000 persons have already signed a petition to remove Nelson. Organised demonstrations have taken place to advocate for its removal. Activists have vandalised it. Protestors were given media space to promote their ideas.

Nelson has been portrayed as a slave-owning racist who despised Barbados. We were told that the statue should offend all Barbadians, and anyone not offended is a racist. That does not encourage honest discussion, and ensures that public meetings will likely be a farce.

Did Nelson own slaves? I could not find any evidence that Nelson bought, sold, or owned any slaves. He was mainly at sea from the time he was 12 years old until the day he died.

Was Nelson a racist? Again, I could find no supporting evidence in the historical record. He had black persons on his ships, not as slaves, but as trusted warriors. He was developing an extremely talented and disciplined naval fighting force – one that would rule the seas for the next 140 years.

In my travels, I observed the bronze reliefs at the base of Nelson’s statue in London. One of them depicts his death. Near the dying Nelson is a black man. He is not in chains. Neither is he doing labour work as are some other seamen. He is clothed, and armed with a rifle – and his foot is on the neck of his enemy. A photo of the relief is provided.

Did Nelson despise Barbados? There is evidence that Nelson did disparage Barbados. However, enslaving persons for generations can only have a bad effect on the character of the oppressors. A non-oppressor would likely disparage such a place.

Did Nelson support slavery? The only evidence I could find is Nelson’s private letter to his friend, Simon Taylor, where he stated his opposition to Wilberforce’s antislavery arguments. Taylor lived in Jamaica, and was one of the richest Britons at that time.

Nelson’s stated concern was that Wilberforce’s success “would certainly cause the murder of all our friends and fellow subjects in the colonies”. Nelson’s title qualified him to be a member of the House of Lords. I could find no evidence of his public position there, or anywhere else in the historical record.

It should be noted that Wilberforce was arguing for abolition, during a war, when the Navy was fighting French and Spanish forces, and not readily available to protect colonists. It is plausible that Nelson was concerned about the consequences of an immediate abolition on the safety of colonists. Evidence beyond a private letter, to reassure a frightened friend, should be required before concluding a person’s actual beliefs.

Is Nelson our hero? As noted, Nelson trained the British Navy to dominate the seas. Nelson died in 1805. The British abolished the African slave trade in 1807. The British Navy was able to successfully enforce that abolition act because of Nelson’s brilliant leadership. Therefore, should he not be a hero to all who do not support the African slave trade?

Let me end by noting that the bronze statue is of exceptional quality. The workmanship appears to be as near to perfect as can be achieved, and its durability, after almost 200 years, is remarkable. It is far superior to the stone statue of Nelson in London, and should be studied by our artists as an exemplar of workmanship. I am concerned that we do not value quality in Barbados.

We destroyed the underground structure at Fort George, perhaps the first limestone masonry multi-arched structure ever built on this planet. The quality of workmanship of that international treasure was impressive, and beautiful, and durable. But that could not save it from those determined to destroy it.

We destroyed the 6-storey NIS building, which was built on the most expensive foundation system in Barbados. When the Queen visited Barbados in 1975, she knighted Gary Sobers, and opened that building. We demolished the $30M building, because some activists found it offensive, and incompatible with a planned park for one of our heroes, Clement Payne.

We applaud the vandalism of Nelson’s statue. We cheer those who want to destroy it, or dump it in the river. Even the Minister responsible has suggested putting it in the corrosive seawater. We are showing the world that we are an easily controlled people, with no appreciation for quality, who are discouraged from thinking for ourselves.

We need to move the conversation about our governance apparatus to a next level. So far regarding the appointment of director to SOEs and quasi nothing has changed under this government. It seems you are happy to tout that we have nobody outside the political class qualified to sit on Boards. Especially if those political appointees are affiliated with the incumbent political party? This cannot be the case.

Well…Grenville is guaranteed not to be allowed to enter that parliament under any circumstances ever..

lying Black John…. i saw this morning where a petition met the 10K mark to have that cursed statue removed from the site where African slaves were sold and black children were raped…THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN…..in it’s place should be statues of the Black family 2 children and 2 adults representative of the crimes committed against the African descended on that very spot…..nothing else should go there but a symbol of the Black family.

On an even better note, `this just may be the catalyst to change the backward practice of relying on dependency tourism and not restructuring the economy so that BLACK businesses can be a part of the economic landscape on a LARGE scale, generating employment and broadening the tax base, but we will see, as someone said if all the cruiseliners go insolvement they won’t be missed, of course am sure the lazy tourism pimps will not know how to survive if that happens…

“The possibility of a cruise line becoming insolvent due to the cruise industry’s widespread, coronavirus-caused shutdown is no longer theoretical.

Spanish cruise operator Pullmantur Cruises, which is partly owned by Royal Caribbean Cruises, has filed for reorganization under Spanish insolvency laws, Royal Caribbean Cruises said Monday.

Royal Caribbean Cruises owns 49% of the three-ship company, which caters to Spanish speaking vacationers from Spain and Latin America.

“Despite the great progress the company made to achieve a turnaround in 2019 and its huge engagement and best efforts of its dedicated employees, the headwinds caused by the pandemic are too strong for Pullmantur to overcome without a reorganization,” Pullmantur’s board of directors said in a statement.”

  37. (1) Please help with my calculation 10K out of 260K is the equivalent of 11 million people signing a petition in the US. An impressive number.

    (2) “It should be noted that Wilberforce was arguing for abolition, during a war, when the Navy was fighting French and Spanish forces, and not readily available to protect colonists”
*** We should all be thankful the war did not last 100 years. How can you make an argument for the continued enslavement of a people? Are you that dumb?

    (3) “A non-oppressor would likely disparage such a place.”
*** So convoluted is your thinking, that you would present a man who advocated for the continuation of slavery as being against it.

    (4) “Did Nelson support slavery? The only evidence I could find is Nelson’s private letter to his friend, Simon Taylor, where he stated his opposition to Wilberforce’s antislavery arguments.”
***What more do you want to find. His being an advocate for the continuation of slavery is not enough?

    (5) Is Nelson our hero? As noted, Nelson trained the British Navy to dominate the seas. Nelson died in 1805. The British abolished the African slave trade in 1807. The British Navy was able to successfully enforce that abolition act because of Nelson’s brilliant leadership. Therefore, should he not be a hero to all who do not support the African slave trade?
*** You would give him credit for what happened after his death, but not hang him for his written words.

    (6) “Let me end by noting that the bronze statue is of exceptional quality. The workmanship appears to be as near to perfect as can be achieved, and its durability, after almost 200 years, is remarkable. It is far superior to the stone statue of Nelson in London, and should be studied by our artists as an exemplar of workmanship. ”
*** Do you think victims of the holocaust would embrace a statue of Hitler and want it admired by their children?

(7)”We are showing the world that we are an easily controlled people, with no appreciation for quality, who are discouraged from thinking for ourselves.”
**You are showing the world that we are an ignorant people. Ignorant of our history and lacking self respect. “As a dog returns to his vomit, so a fool repeats his folly”.

    Abandon this vomit.

In the 1817 returns for slaves in Barbados, there were about 6,000 slave owners of which about 10% were either Free Negroes or Free Mulattoes.

There were less than 300 large plantations.

The majority of slave owners owned less than 10 slaves.

Theo…at least you understand why Grenville and his ilk cannot under any circumstances be allowed to enter that parliament, there are some in the other opposition partiies that are too damn close to entering right now and should be nowhere near there either, the complete ignorance and arrogance emanating from that sorry excuse for a brain is embarrassing, ugly and should be a damn crime, people like that are like the walking dead on autopilot….

…from reading your post apparently the only take away the village idiot got was that the bronze statue was a superb piece of engineering, of course am sure he just ignored Trevor Marshal’s precise and detailed history of the animal nelson, all the information that can be found and was posted to just about every social media platform on how destructive and hateful nelson was and decided he will spout utter nonsense with not one iota of care and very clear utter disdain for the slaves who died because of nelson’s callous hatred for African people…

..another subhuman trying to crawl into the parliament and we cannot have that at all…that is why he was roasted on FB today…when he comes out with this shit, i have a family member who always say, Grenville is looking for the attention that he obviously did not get as a child because no one can be that stupid although someone who knows him said, oh yes they can and that he is the poster child for stupid..

There are more than 50 SOEs in Barbados. Two are headed by wives of members of the “political class”. Two! As for other Directors, employees and board members, you should ask yourself why there are connected (or perceived to be) to a party. The maturity that you are asking for goes far beyond appointments and it must start with recognising and accepting the role of SOEs as part of any government’s strategy for achieving its objectives. We should also talk about how people get picks in the private sector too, why and who is disadvantaged.

It is easy to pick a member of the political elite from his/her utterances and what gets under his/her skin.

    PLT is obviously one.

From the time he appeared on here it was easy to tell.

    Simple things ruffle his feathers.

I have had a ball with him.

His father tutored Tom Adams in his first year at HC because he was sickly.

That would put his father together with Sir Grantley, Clement Payne etc in the 30’s.

Clement Payne was a Communist agitator sent from Barbados to Barbados to stir up strife.

    Grantley Adams defended him.

Sir Grantley graduated HC in 1918, the year his father was born so Sir Grantley was probably a figure to be emulated in his father’s household.

His father would have been a child of the 30’s growing up under the “Black Moses” the champion of the masses.

PLT gets his membership of the political elite through inheritance and indoctrination.

When you were running bout playing cricket, interfering with girls and whatever wutlessness you got up to, he was being indoctrinated.

Here you see the finished product.

Every now and again I will toss up Dr. Humby and Grantley Adams and he always bites!!

Well, if the local philistines can do that to a piece royal history why can’t the same cultural terrorists do it to an idol dedicated to a self-confessed racist and documented supporter of black chattel slavery in the model slave pen called Barbadoes?

Can you imagine the ‘future’ history and cultural importance associated with the longest sitting monarch on the British Throne who came all the way to little England to perform a unique feat of knighting a real Bajan Hero on his own ‘home soil’ instead of inviting him to Buckingham Palace to perform such a ‘foreign’ investiture?

If Bajans and their government can demolish such physical evidence of a rare royal visit by the ‘Last Queen’ of Great Britain and Little England during the lifetime of the current generations of Bajans why can’t the statue of an English racist and slavery promoter be removed to the local Museum at the Garrison just like how the Union Jack was lowered and given to the last Governor of the colony in November1966?

To have a referendum to MOVE a statue is so RIDICULOUS it is mindnumbing!!!!!!….there was no referendum to move Sir Garfield Sobers statue, there was no referendum to put Errol Barrow statue in Independence Square. We will hear now that we need a referendum to have a new stadium and where it should be built , when to demolish the old NIS building and how to do it, to have Bus fare raised by a certain amount and when to do it, and to have a referendum as to if and when to have the island locked down to counter the impact of COVID-19!!!!!!. Simple logic has to be applied to this issue!!!! It was DECIDED by a govt that Trafalgar Square would be renamed National Heroes Square to honour the supposed heroes of a post Independence Barbadian society. No referendum was carried out to give consent to the renaming!!!….Admiral Nelson simply is not a hero of contemporary Barbados!!!!!…. The problem was that govt was not DECISIVE enough to move the statue at the same time Trafalgar Square was renamed 22 years ago!!!!.
The CONCEPT that there needs to be further CONSULTATION to MOVE a statue of a NON HERO after a DECISION was made to rename the square that the said statue resides in is so ABSURD i can guarantee that the ONLY place in the world that this would be an “issue” would be in BARBADOS!!!!!! MOVING the statue will not offend anybody no more than renaming Trafalgar Square itself!!!!. Destroying this and any statue MIGHT be perceived as a more offensive act and that is why i don’t support its destruction!!!!!
As Minister King said, the only public consultation needed at this point (if ever there HAS to be public consensus on this ISSUE) is to WHERE to put the statue. After that, all govt has to do is to SPECIFY where the desired location is and set a basic timeline as to when it will be done.
In my OPINION the greater ISSUE i see for Barbados is how we can call ourselves a nation, “independent” for 54 years and we have let moving a statue become a LINGERING NATIONAL ISSUE!!!!!!. Barbados has a (significantly) majority Black population. Post Independence there has been no SERIOUS animosity between the races (as compared to other countries). It isn’t like a race war is being planned..it isn’t like we want to ban white people from visiting here!!!!…it is just the relocation of a GODDAMN STATUE that is being considered!!!!. to use Bajan parlance BARBADOS AIN’T READY YET!!!!!!!

  46. @ Disgusting Lies and Propaganda TV June 23, 2020 11:08 PM

I suggest we all focus on the really important local issues:
    – 40 % unemployment rate
    – opening of airport
    – LIAT
    – public finances
    – second Corona waive from Oct. on, possibly 50-60 % unemployed or even famine then

Grand Admiral Nelson is an issue for the plantocrats on the one hand and insular social-nationalists on the other, who spend the whole day circling in their private swimming pool and don’t know what to do with their free time in their villa. It was the same with the appointment of the police deputy. The island burns down ecomomically. And what does the outspoken Senator talk about? He’s raging over details in administrative law. There is really no more obstinate and elitist way.

  47. Here is an interesting take on the removal of statues from an ex-Nigerian Etonian. We may bash Grenville however his views are commonly held by a surprisingly large numbers of well educated blacks.

Black Bajans better WAKE UP and TAKE BACK the country that THEY FUND and ALWAYS HAVE for ccenturies from the MINORITY THIEVES who hijacked the legislature and the judiciary and continue to act like they are slavemasters over the population while ROBBING the people and island….

Black Bajans better MAKE SURE that neither the DLP nor BLP, the toxic blacks OWNED by the same tiefing minorities, the PARASITES in the lives of the majority population ARE NEVER RETURNED TO THE PARLIAMENT in this lifetime nor the next…make them an UGLY FOOTNOTE of the island’s brutal history against the majority population.

build BLACK BUSINESSES…..BUY BLACK ONLY….keep the money circulating among yaselves, enrich this and future generations of YOUR PEOPLE ONLY…starve them out, they are lucky, in some black countries they would be BURNT OUT…

get them out, this is your chance..you don’t owe the black TRAITORS in the parliament any explanation, you do not owe the THIEVING MINORITIES any apology, they have robbed you generationally , disenfranchise you AND YOUR CHILDREN, practice racism and apartheid against you USING YOUR OWN MONEY, with no conscience and have no intention to stop, and the BLACK TRAITORS intend to continue to help them rob you, they plan to continue to oppress your children and grandchildren as long as YOU ALLOW THEM….they see you as their docile slaves and always will.

Nowhere on the petition signed by 10.000 plus black bajans, says ” WE THE UNDERSIGNED DEMANDS THE RELOCATION OF NELSON STATUE ” … OUR PETITION IS DEMANDING, UNEQUIVOCALLY, THE REMOVAL OF NELSON STATUE FROM THE LANDSCAPE OF BARBADOS …
Mia it’s either you deal with our demands as are or we will be filing a NO-CONFIDENCE MOTION, against you and your party for NEGLIGENCE AND A BLATANT DISREGARD OF OATH OF OFFICE … and you and your party will be held accountable for perpetuating the continuation of our hurt, our humiliation and dehumanization …
We further submit that Nelson statue not be removed at the cost of the offspring of the victims of a vicious and wicked European population.”
