The FBI is investigating the death of George Floyd, black man who was pinned on the neck by a police officer and later died in custody. Minnesota’s Attorney General Keith Ellison joins The Beat with Ari Melber’s breaking coverage on the latest from the FBI and the protests. While the officers involved have yet to be charged, Ellison argues a “quick arrest” might “make people feel better about justice” it is “important” for investigators to “take the time to make sure that these charges, if they are brought forward, stick.

It is worth noting that some love to distract from the issues at hand to seek to score political points at home. That governments of small nations could be criticised for restraint in commenting on a situation still in its embryonic stages is baffling. Noting also that few persons would be privy to private condemnation makes remarks to the effect that the GoB ought to be disparaged in this regard, all the more confounding and in fact revealing of the agenda of some.

  2. @ Khaleel Kothdiwala June 3, 2020 12:38 PM

Of course, “strongly worded statements” make the world of difference, when they are backed up by no foreseeable action and continued fraternisation with Chinese imperialists, who espouse values antithetical to Western liberal democracy. It is a telling indictment on the present moment: all hashtags and statements for the duration of the news cycle until the next hot-button issue arises. Will this be another seven-day wonder or Arab Spring?

“I am not denying that in the Modern Era, blacks have disproportionately and despicably suffered racism in all its various typologies. That is evident for all to see. However, comments such as yours do not help, but in fact, hinder race relations, as it does the same thing you accuse others of: pedestalise one race over another.”
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

To whom are you referring when you use the label “blacks” to refer to those humans who ‘have disproportionately and despicably suffered racism in all its various typologies?

Based on your BU photo would you consider yourself ‘black’ and, potentially, subject to ‘despicable racism’?

Would you consider those people of Sri Lanka with their lingering Sun-kissed skins to be “black” also or is that stepping to close to the line of Truth as far as you are concerned?

“Let’s try this again and see if it posts….Police kill more Whites than Blacks, Hispanics, or any other ethnicity in the US….So far for as of 30 March 2020, Police have shot and killed 31 Blacks, 13 Hispanics and 42 whites.”AND … “In Chicago over the weekend, 84 people were shot, not by Police!!”

These are the comments one associates with an ‘idiot’ or an ‘ignoramus’, best described as a person who cannot/refuses to analyse data to reach practical and rational interpretations or simply someone who wants to be a troll offering insanity dressed as opinions!

1.The number of killings 31+13+42= 86 or 36%, 15% and 48% of killings. Across the breadth of the US – as has been noted here repeatedly- the Afro-American population is ONLY 12%… by very basic analysis that is a open season on Blacks… such is the OUTSIZED difference!

2.If 84 people were shot then that’s a bad thing… that none were shot by police during the commission of a crime is even greater. Humans commit crimes including homicides… police officers are empowered to prevent or hold us accountable for those acts. That’s a good thing.

At no time.. not once, not 84, not Black, White or Hispanic, not ANYTIME are police officers empowered to murder unarmed, That’s a BAD thing…they are there to PROTECT n SERVE.

If some educated wag can make a case that citizen-on-citizen crime/killings is comparable to police-on-citizen brutality/killings then the obvious correlation is that we should expect of cops the same lack of disciplined care that we expect of our fellow citizens… thus they should have NO IMMUNITY against prosecution for shootings or death by strangulation while on duty.

That’s either a reasoned next step from the absolute insanity offered as logical thought or itself is absurd logic!

  5. Most people know where Quaker John, the Soviet refugee and others of that ilk are coming from. Why not ignore them as we do all nutcases? Why try to debate with them?

“By that warped logic, Jews are equally incapable of racism, as the group suffering perhaps the worst oppression on the basis of race stretching back at least to 38CE in Alexandria. I don’t think many would support that view either. So why can Jews be racist but not blacks?”
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Are you suggesting that Jews are a ‘race of people’ which, as it is claimed, were enslaved in Egypt for over 400 years in the Sun?

Doesn’t that also turn Christians and Muslims into races ‘too’?

  8. @Miller

I am acutely aware that as a mixed race individual, I have a unique social experience. So while many might say that one derives one’s racial status from one’s mother, and that as my mother can be classed as being of primarily African descent, that makes me black, that may be true but does not accurately depict my reality and therefore whether or not I encounter “despicable racism”.

Additionally, you know as well as I (or at least you can find it on your copy-and-paste adventures to feign knowledge) that race is not biologically determined but a social construct. And consequently, it takes on different meanings across different cultures. We in the West have some consensus on the notion of a “black person”, which is distinct from a “white” or a “brown” (in this respect Indian and not simply the colour), or much more pejoratively a “yellow”. And you know that so I will not engage you on that.

I will leave you to Enuff but suffice it to say that being mixed race makes me privy to the racialism of many racial groups. I note and observe the racialism of Indians with regard to whites and blacks. I note the racialism of wastrels such as yourself with regard to Indians, whites, Chinese etc. One thing that is clear to me over a short period of observation is that no human trait is the sole preserve of one group, and exalting one group is exalting one group. It doesn’t matter if you say that one group is definitively more intelligent than another, as pseudo-scientists sought to prove for decades, if not centuries, or that one cannot display a negative characteristic. On a matter of principle, the two things are equal.

The Truth Is That ANTIFA And Black Lives Matter Rioters Are Burning Down Black-Owned Businesses And Murdering African Americans Like David Dorn

So if everyone right now from coast to coast is literally screaming that “BLACK LIVES MATTER!!!!” how come no one but white people are standing up for David Dorn? He was black, how come his life doesn’t matter in the least bit to ANTIFA and Black Lives Matter? Because to the cowardly criminals of ANTIFA and BLack Lives Matter, David Dorn does not matter, black or not, because they do not value human life.

To the cowardly criminals of ANTIFA and Black Lives Matter, David Dorn does not matter, black or not, because they do not value human life.

I am a white guy, and I come from what the Liberals would call a privileged position, and today I want to use that position of privilege to say the name of a black man whom I never met, David Dorn, and tell the world that his life mattered because all lives matter. These riots by ANTIFA and Black Lives Matter are destroying the livelihood of black business owners, and taking the lives of black American citizens. David Dorn is not the only black man killed in these riots, there have been many more. Why is no one standing up to protest that? You are all hypocrites, that’s why.

“From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.” James 4:1-3 (KJB)
There are two very different reactions happening right now to the death of George Floyd, one is a rightful movement protesting police brutality, and I agree with those people to a very high degree. Police need to follow the sames laws that everyone else has to follow, they are not above it. I agree with the people who are peacefully protesting the death of George Floyd. But there is a second grouping that has inserted themselves into the mix – ANTIFA and BLack Lives Matter – and they are destroying black-owned businesses and killing black people.

David Dorn was a retired police officer from St. Louis, and he spent over 40 years putting his life on the line everyday for the people of his community. David Dorn was a black man. David Dorn was gunned down and left to die alone in a pool of his own blood, who killed him? Black Lives Matter looters, that’s who. Say his name, David Dorn. Now say the name of the group who murdered him, Black Lives Matter.

    • David Dorn Was Murdered By Black Lives Matter Looters
    His life mattered too.

    • How Many More Blacks Will Die At The Rioter’s Blood-Stained Hands?

You know as well as I (or again can find it on your copy-and-paste excursions) that Jews are both an ethnic group or a socially-constructed race as well as a religion. Where Christians and Muslims were active in proselytizing, Jews never have been. Of course today you have Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews, with the Sephardic ones being more closely aligned ethnically to their ancestors. But anyone with the slightest knowledge of history knows that the factors which allowed Judaism to remain more or less confined to an ethnicity or race, were the exact factors which have meant that Muslims and Christians have been far less racially sterile.

Besides, Muslims nor Christians can claim the consistent, structural, institutional racism suffered by the Jewery across history. Of course, they have always proven to be an interesting case study, due to their accumulation of economic capital despite this.

Yes,@John that is sadly very true. I take you back to my earlier remark about “a person who cannot/refuses to analyse data to reach practical and rational interpretations”.

You KNOW perfectly well that the comprehensive sociological picture of Black life in the US MUST be properly considered with those raw numbers…remember there are many types of blogging styles….”Lies, damned lies, and statistics” sometimes seem to be yours wrapped into one 🙂 🙂 !

  15. I was the first person on BU who questioned why the CARICOM nations under the stewardship of Mia have yet to express their anger at the lynching of our fellow African brother George Floyd. It took a number of days before a small number of sovereign countries started to speak out. The African Union has finally spoken.

I know that there are some juvenile voices on BU who look at the Caribbean as a collection of small islands and are of the belief that a child should be seen and not heard. Least we forget, the Caribbean region over the years have produced numerous revolutionary civil rights leaders. From Marcus Garvey, Stokely Carmichael, Clement Osbourne Payne and all the others whose messages resonated internationally.

Look at the period of post independence during the sixties and the seventies when we had a collection of voices from Fidel Castro, Michael Manley, Maurice Bishop, Eugene Charles, et al. whose voices reached far beyond the islands of their birth.

Why has the Caribbean political voice become neutered? Is Mia waiting for an approval from the Maloney boy before she speaks out or is she perhaps waiting for the new kid on the block to give her the thumbs up?

  16. The fact that George Floyd died the way he did is appalling.

The world and his wife agree.

The fact that Antifa would piggy back is also appalling.

Things will quieten down as Antifa is on the verge of if not already been designated a terrorist organization.

You will find that members of the organization will be thinking twice.

Plus, their interference is only strengthening Trump’s position with voters for November.

… and many of those voters I reckon will be black.

To continue the rioting and destabilization would be dumb if their objective is to “get Trump”!!

    But, you never know.

Where does that place the Ethiopian Jews? Are they part of the Jewish ethnic grouping or a “socially-constructed race” like those ‘Jews’ who populated Europe for ‘millennia’ and who can be found even today in the lands of the former HQ of Nazism?

If we were to take your argument to the absurdum would it be logical to say that both Muslims and Christians are indeed “JEWS” since they are all the children of Abraham?

How about going even higher in your logic of make-believe and say that all of ‘one’ mankind (including Indians and Chinese) is from the ethnic Jewish tree of Adam & Eve?

  28. There are demonstrations in Australia, New Zealand, France, the UK – but not in Barbados. If Boris Johnson could condemn the savagery in Minneapolis, Minnesota, why can’t CARICOM speak out?

  29. Let’s see if an analogy will work.

We have in a bar somewhere a scrawny little fellow, no more than 130 lbs enjoying some alcoholic refreshment with a friend. This group of very loud, very muscular gentlemen walk into the bar, drunk already and go right up the bar stools and sit down and start making a bunch of noise. Very loud, very drunk. Is our scrawny little fella going to shout at the group of big men “wunna drunkards, shut up in hey”??? Does that sound like a sensible or rational reaction? If the group tries to assault a lady passing by, I would say that he ought to do something. If they try to assault his woman, he most certainly ought to do something. However, if they are keeping noise among themselves, it makes greater sense for him to leave the group to the publican or other patrons who are better-endowed than he is.

Away from the analogy now, that reality is perhaps an uncomfortable or sorry one, but it is as real as ever. The GoB has to seriously weigh strategic objectives and imperatives before wading into a very volatile situation. They may decide that it is appropriate to do so in the fullness of the time, because they know better than I or the ordinary person do what those strategic imperatives are and how issuing condemnation interacts with those imperatives. If they ultimately say nothing, clearly the strategic imperative meant that that battle simply was not ours to fight. So while we as private citizens can do so or Government ministers and Senators in their private capacities can do so, Government is not the Cabinet’s private concern. It is a public trust that must be handled delicately. So we will see what happens going forward, but that has little relevance to the present discussion. One notes with interest the manner of person seeking to make this a topic for discussion.

  36. @TLNS

The decision to allow 3m Hong Kong Chinese to live in Britain and apply for UK citizenship is not new. The same happened at the time of the handover. You may not remember, but droves of UK estate agents rushed over to Hong Kong to sell property exclusively to the Hong Kongers. At the time it led to hostile stories in the newspapers.
If you live in London, the Old St Mary’s Hospital on the Harrow Road, was a Chinese ghetto, and that massive (and impressive) development along Battersea Bridge was also one of the sites.
The ones admitted will bring lots of money, as all refugees do; the poor ones will remain in HK.

  37. This myth of the Ugandan Asian must be dismissed. They were not destitute immigrants when they arrived in the UK. When they resided in Uganda they were the merchant class and ran the civil service whilst the British played cricket, drank Pims and entertained themselves during the day.

The reason why Idi Amin got rid of them was because they mistreated their African brothers and sisters. I have listened to the likes of a well know Ugandan Asian – Yasmin Alibhai-Brown – and she has gone on record confirming that her fellow Asians badly mistreated the locals. Parallels with Barbados. That they have reached the echelons of British society should not surprise anyone.

It will be the same with those people from Hong Kong should they decide to settle in the UK.

  38. Listening to former President Obama as the blogmaster types is like comparing gold to mud if Trump is the person of reference.

  39. @ Hal,
These people are very smart. They probably have already invested in a house/apartment in the UK. They would have anticipated that the screw was going to be eventually turned by the Chinese government.

I remember that there was an outcry at the time that we would witness a surge of migrants from HK. We all know Hal that the British establishment too love dem people. The Hong Kong dollar was a currency that used to carry serious weight.

  40. @TLSN

One point that is not often mentioned is that most of them were people who held on to their British passports and refused to identify as Ugandans.
As to Yasmin, she once mentioned me in an article she wrote without talking to me when she knew my telephone number; she made things worse when the two of us were speaking at the same conference in Islington on blacks in journalism and she spoke movingly about the Daily Mail while I was sitting next to her. She had not a clue what she was talking about (by the way I had earlier visited her home in West London with a friend). She now writes occasionally for the Daily Mail.

  41. @Hal,

have you ever visited BC, Canada especially Vancouver and the Richmond area. you would swear you are in Hong Kong India, which is not necessarily a bad thing

  42. @HA
Hong Kong’s status changed in 1997, are you saying that Britain’s offer to take Hong Kong’s residents was open-ended?

I notice that no one commented on the Gov’ts approach to HK citizens vis a vis those who came via Windrush, the old “boat people” may not have had the resources that HK residents have but they certainly contributed to the building of Britain.

  43. @ Greene

I have not, but I know about Vancouver. I used to work with Hong Kongers and mainland Chinese (Mandarin versus Cantonese). It was fun – like Africans and Caribbeans. Have you noticed how UK Chinese has shifted from Cantonese to Mandarin? Interesting.

  44. @ Sargeant

In the build up to the handover Hong Kongers with the necessary wealth were free to enter the UK. Many preferred Vancouver and Australia.
Like in everything else,, the middle classes and people with connections can always escape and become refugees. We have them here in the UK from all over the Middle East. They come to Britain and within months they have big cars, businesses and as many children as to fill a class. In the meantime, the poor, such as the Yemenis and those in Syria, are left to face the music

The die has been cast and the “insurrection” defensive ploy prepared… so there are but two basic questions to be answered: 1) will this admin go against the judgement of Senators, a former Joint Chief Chairman, several other military generals/admirals and hundreds of former govt executives to deploy active duty troops to suppress these protests; and 2) if yes, WHEN will it be done.

NB… the president in an unprecedented manner has ALREADY assigned the current ACTIVE Chairman of the US military apparatus to “coordinate military operations in the cities”. Can any lawyer in the US Justice Dept or any non-crazed pundit anywhere….. explain in simple, unequivocal language HOW an active military commander is COORDINATING MILITARY OPERATIONS (what are those???) in the continental boundaries of the USA!!!

As an avid fan of a great, intel/secret sniper style thriller I am enthralled, but this is NOT a Baldachi ‘Camel Club’; a Child’s ‘Jack Reacher’ or a Jason Bourne new book script.. …this is scary real happening in the supposed democratic capital of the world right before our incredulous eyes and we all appear CLUELESS!

  47. @David, you may want to believe that Former President Obama was gold compared to Trump’s mud. However, I listened to him briefly before I switched channels, What i was hearing from him was a lot but yet nothing of substance. He has been under a rock somewhere and would now like to come and ingratiate his way back into black lives. That knucklehead had ten years to make a difference, instead, he pandered and sucked up to all others and never gave two shits about the plight of blacks in his country. Had he gone out on a limb for blacks as he did for Wickers and Bullers, maybe… They are those asking why Barbadians aren’t marching in support of their brothers and sisters in the USA, I have asked of them personally, the answer I’m mostly getting is that ” rioting and looting” is not a bajan thing. The schmucks will always have an excuse for not getting up off their ass. I’m not surprised at this attitude, Bajans and other little island people went to the USA and repeatedly allowed the white man to set him against his black American family. I’ve often listened to Bajans boasting of their so called good British styled education as the reason for the white man hiring and promoting them ahead of black Americans, the fools didn’t realized the white man was afraid of a brother Malcolm in every black american versus an uncle Tom and aunt Jemima in every west indian. I saw this shit for decades. Apart from Eastern pkw wucking up…Not me boh, I in marching no way but to me house. I in from bout hay, cat luck aint dog luck and much more stupid shit while enjoying the benefits of others’s struggles.

Be careful there @David re: “Listening to former President Obama as the blogmaster types is like comparing gold to mud”.

This POTUS encases many of his possessions in gold paint and looks like he himself has been touched by Midas… he might think you think he is the golden one!

  49. Now that General Mattis had come out against the dictator-in-chief Donald Trump we are calling on the USA military, the srecret service, capital police and all the 17 clandestine agencies or units within to arrest the criminal Donald John Trump and subject him to a military tribunal tonight.

Should he be found guilty then the lawful sentence should be carried out at daybreak.

Those charges may include breaches of the constitution, crimes against humanity, war crimes against the American people, crimes of aggression and genocide.
