The FBI is investigating the death of George Floyd, black man who was pinned on the neck by a police officer and later died in custody. Minnesota’s Attorney General Keith Ellison joins The Beat with Ari Melber’s breaking coverage on the latest from the FBI and the protests. While the officers involved have yet to be charged, Ellison argues a “quick arrest” might “make people feel better about justice” it is “important” for investigators to “take the time to make sure that these charges, if they are brought forward, stick.

  1. Why would the secretary of defense deny he was in the know about the photo op with Trump posing with the Bible (upsided down though it was).

  2. Good to have made the 1000th comment.

    Michael Pence as well.

  3. Whitehill;

The first part of your comment above has no merit. It merely vomits a series of clueless lies against Obama.
The second part about the attitudes of the typical Bajan in metropolitan countries is different in that imho it captures the essence and exact expressions of such bajan attitudes.

Listening to former President Obama as the blogmaster types is like comparing gold to mud if Trump is the person of reference
    ++++++++++++++++
The last six months has shown what a dumpster fire the Trump Administration has been and here are the two most recent that have had a profound effect on the country:

    1) The Trump Administration disbanded the Pandemic Office left by Obama that was supposed to be the guardian angel of the population, ensuring that new diseases are flagged and steps taken to minimize the country’s exposure. Result – word of mouth from Chinese authorities on the extent and spread of the virus which has now left 100,000 plus dead in the US

    2) After the death of Michael Brown there were many complaints of the treatment meted out to minorities at the hand of Police departments and the Obama Administration established a task force on policing. This task force was led by a former police Chief in Philadelphia and it produced a report titled 21st Century policing which the incoming Trump administration promptly ignored. Part of the efforts to combat police abuse was “consent Decrees” that permitted the Justice Dept. to monitor police Depts that were noted for abuses but the Republicans were not interested and Jeff Sessions quickly abandoned that policy- result George Floyd.

In those two examples the Obama Administration left road maps for Trump to follow but we know the rest………

@Whitehill, you always put together an interesting screed – sometimes quite colourfully so, of course – but help me out here if u can re
“He has been under a rock somewhere and would now like to come and ingratiate his way back into black lives.” How did you arrive at that conclusion?

The former POTUS followed protocol (for a while) and allowed current POTUS to do his ting… but this is NOT the first time he has condemned this admin policies… as I recall he spoke up after Philando Castile’s killing and ‘consoled’ the family…he has spoken about the terrible pandemic govt process and otherwise…. Additionally the former first lady has also been reservedly vocal during her book tour and other occasions….. So is it that HE has now reappeared or that you have now decided that he has reappeared!

Also, what exactly on any scale from incremental to grand would you have wanted the then POTUS to initiate or implement for Black empowerment ….After all, that admin’s almost regime ending fight for the ACA (saved by Justice Roberts) which ostensibly brought millions of disenfranchised Blacks into proper health programs is not grand enough I suppose, nor the actual govt program to give Black youth (men particularly) a resource of deep support with that ‘Brother’s Keeper’ initiative is not incremental enough, I suspect.

Did you want him to legislate non-racial profiling or to legalize Black affirmative action in academia, on Wall Street and other glass ceiling heights where Blacks are not represented well, or to sign an executive order with solutions to close the wealth-income gap and compensate in ‘reparation style’ all the varied descendants of those Tulsa pioneers who gave their lives in that 1921 race-riot simply for being very successful …Or maybe to sic the Justice Dept on Zimmerman to ensure some conviction.

Surely, there were things he could have done much better and many he did superbly .. but what are YOUR points on the significant improvements that he REALISTICALLY could have done.

    Just asking bro.

@David BU the more significant part of it is because Mark esper is basically the Minister Over the Armed Forces so he would have thrown serious “interference” to Trump’s maniacal plan to use the military over the governors’ heads. Knowing Trumps’ arrogance and penchant for firing people (a habit probably developed doing too many episodes of The Apprentice) Mark Esper MIGHT be on the receiving end of a “You’re Fired” from Trump

  11. @De Dribbler, if you can’t get by that smooth talking golden mouth spiel, you may not be able to appreciate where I’m coming from. Let me offer you this in response to your query. @David, one has to take the man at his word re “Why would the secretary of defense deny he was in the know about the photo op with Trump posing with the Bible (upsided down though it was).”…. His actions on Commander Crozier, the SEAL Gallagher affair when there were irresponsible breaks by POTUS in the military chain of command suggests that he threads carefully and respects the rule of military control and command. Also, the crazed nature of that photo-op debacle (and the media reporting around why Esper was there) suggests that he was caught off-guard and totally misunderstood how he was being played.

He facilitates Trump undoubtedly but he has to live beyond this admin…a fellow like Barr is done after this stint so he I expect to do his immoral best to achieve whatever are his final nefarious life objectives.

Anyhow, the only reason Esper will not be fired is due to the short time line to November and getting someone through the Senate approval… but that said if there are other Senate approved political appointees that this man thinks he can get assigned in that post then it’s good-bye!

@Lucas, I am not going to get too deep here with you other than to point out your apparent lack of understanding of ‘chain of command’ and too basic management.

Let me try this. There MUST always be an acceptable process for discipline and NO general, admiral or Commander-in-Chief can usurp the process without bringing it into disrepute. The process MUST play out to allow everyone to accept that justice has been done… at the end of that process the general, admiral or POTUS can use their discretionary power to remove the sanction via pardon, commuting the verdict etc.

To step into SEAL Gallager military tribunal matter and assert that the man must be made innocent or have his insignia returned is ABSURDLY wrong and ONLY done in bad, authoritarian systems…NOT properly regulated operations which operate under an established code and rule of law….. The general or admirals are answerable to the POTUS …and in simple terms often have a direct reporting chain-of-command to him…..NOT SO anyone below that level.

That you would conflate that OBVIOUS inappropriate interference with a junior rank’s discipline and the President’s direct right to fire a direct-reporting top military officers says all that is necessary about your proper understanding of management or military best practices or once again this tendency to take STANDARD rules and twist them to fit a ridiculous narrative

    I gone…when scholars step in… I step out… I get illiterate immediately in understanding this high-level analysis 🙂

Were you ever in the military? Truman Fired Douglas MacArthur for going against his wishes in Korea and publicly voicing dissent. I happened to have been in the cadets with high rank. Esper serves at the will of Trump. He was a former army officer. He is not employed by the army and the post he holds is a political one. Truman like Trump is the commander-in-chief.The below article maybe of some interest.

    THIS DAY IN HISTORY
    APRIL 11
    1951
    April 11
President Truman relieves General MacArthur of duties in Korea
In perhaps the most famous civilian-military confrontation in the history of the United States, President Harry S. Truman relieves General Douglas MacArthur of command of the U.S. forces in Korea. The firing of MacArthur set off a brief uproar among the American public, but Truman remained committed to keeping the conflict in Korea a “limited war.”

Problems with the flamboyant and egotistical General MacArthur had been brewing for months. In the early days of the war in Korea (which began in June 1950), the general had devised some brilliant strategies and military maneuvers that helped save South Korea from falling to the invading forces of communist North Korea. As U.S. and United Nations forces turned the tide of battle in Korea, MacArthur argued for a policy of pushing into North Korea to completely defeat the communist forces. Truman went along with this plan, but worried that the communist government of the People’s Republic of China might take the invasion as a hostile act and intervene in the conflict. In October 1950, MacArthur met with Truman and assured him that the chances of a Chinese intervention were slim.

READ MORE: MacArthur vs. Truman: The Showdown That Changed America

Then, in November and December 1950, hundreds of thousands of Chinese troops crossed into North Korea and flung themselves against the American lines, driving the U.S. troops back into South Korea. MacArthur then asked for permission to bomb communist China and use Nationalist Chinese forces from Taiwan against the People’s Republic of China. Truman flatly refused these requests and a very public argument began to develop between the two men.
This looks like the last straw,” a seething President Harry Truman scrawled in his diary on April 6, 1951. Once again the commander of U.S. forces in the Korean War, General Douglas MacArthur, had gone public with his differences with the commander in chief over the conduct of the war—this time in a letter to House Republican Leader Joseph Martin.

Truman thought it nothing less than “rank insubordination,”

In April 1951, President Truman fired MacArthur and replaced him with Gen. Matthew Ridgeway. On April 11, Truman addressed the nation and explained his actions. He began by defending his overall policy in Korea, declaring, “It is right for us to be in Korea.” He excoriated the “communists in the Kremlin [who] are engaged in a monstrous conspiracy to stamp out freedom all over the world.” Nevertheless, he explained, it “would be wrong—tragically wrong—for us to take the initiative in extending the war… Our aim is to avoid the spread of the conflict.” The president continued, “I believe that we must try to limit the war to Korea for these vital reasons: To make sure that the precious lives of our fighting men are not wasted; to see that the security of our country and the free world is not needlessly jeopardized; and to prevent a third world war.” General MacArthur had been fired “so that there would be no doubt or confusion as to the real purpose and aim of our policy.”

Food for thought the last time US military was called to restore order in a State was California in 1992 in the wake of riots as a result of the jury acquitting the policemen who beat Rodney King.

Guess who was Atty General of the US then? So, when Trump said he would send troops to States to quell protests guess who was whispering in his ear? Guess who ordered the Police and National Guard to clear the area around Lafayette Park so Trump could get his photo op?

[James Mattis] The former[Defense] Secretary, who resigned from Trump’s Cabinet, also indirectly criticized current Defense Secretary Mark Esper’s use of the word “battlespace” in reference to American cities.
“We must reject any thinking of our cities as a ‘battlespace’ that our uniformed military is called upon to ‘dominate,’” Mattis said. “At home, we should use our military only when requested to do so, on very rare occasions, by state governors. Militarizing our response, as we witnessed in Washington, D.C., sets up a conflict—a false conflict—between the military and civilian society.”
“It erodes the moral ground that ensures a trusted bond between men and women in uniform and the society they are sworn to protect, and of which they themselves are a part. Keeping public order rests with civilian state and local leaders who best understand their communities and are answerable to them.”

“Trump is the commander-in-chief. […] If you do not like his policies resign “…. That is now true for Def Sec Esper. He is obligated to resign if he is a man of principle.

He reportedly ordered the 200 active-duty soldiers to barrack closer to the capital “to deal with unrest if needed” early Monday. WHY is this so? Has the president secretly invoked the Insurrection Act and is ready to plunge the nation and world into chaos… is he about to?

Esper then rescinded that order on Wednesday morning after his much publicized press conference when he said “I do not support invoking the Insurrection Act,” and that he firmly believes that “]the] option to use active-duty forces in a law enforcement role should only be used as a matter of last resort and only in the most urgent and dire situations. We are not in one of those situations right now,”

How then can he now overturn his dismissal of the original order so completely unless he has had a bran transplant or is merely a puppet of the president and not safeguarding the interest of the US people… The President need not terminate his service … he needs to RESIGN forthwith!

This is BS of the most extreme…Chicken Little style without the lovely fairy-tale ending!

  35. In Europe, We Also Can’t Breathe

The protests that have flared up across the world in response to the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis are heartening: They are gestures of solidarity and powerful expressions of outrage at the brutality of systemic racism in the United States.

But, as someone working to raise awareness of police brutality in Europe, watching the hashtag “Black Lives Matter” trend outside the U.S. has also been bittersweet. It made me wonder: Why are people in Berlin, London and Auckland joining in the chorus of “Black Lives Matter” chants, but staying silent in the face of police brutality and racism in their own countries?

In Belgium, the death of Floyd has sparked more public displays of indignation than any instance of police brutality in our own country. Social media is full of expressions of solidarity, and every major political party has spoken out against the incident.

Many of the same policymakers who for years pushed for the militarization of our police forces and the criminalization of victims are now jumping at the chance to condemn a particularly egregious example of police violence — because it happened somewhere else.

Europe is no stranger to police brutality. So why do we fail to show the same anger and willingness to protest when we are confronted with incidents of police violence at home?

  38. I think the problem with racism nowadays is more about how people relate to blacks and how much they know black people.

During the Rodney King riots white people were talking about how these black people were destroying their own communities.

When Obama became PotUS democrats thought he was cool, Republicans were afraid of his power and portrayed Michelle as a black radical like Angela Davis. Trump and Johnson hated Obama and formed rightwing racist populist networks to corrupt politics.
America is still racially segregated and whites still do not know blacks personally and socially as friends those that work together do no mix together outside work.
There is more black culture on TV such as on Netflix and more black music crosses over into white communities nowadays where white children have been fans and are also making same music with blacks.
In the current protests the next generation of whites and blacks mix more which is reflected in the music and celebrity culture of USA and worldwide. Trump views the blacks protesting now with the same shock and fear that whites looked at Rodney King protests in 1992.
John Knox epitomises the twisted reasonings of white people where he takes his information from white sources twisted by white minds although his mother looks black and is black or was black. For example a fact that there is 14% black people in America gets twisted by the 66% racist people of the 75% white majority.
Freedom Crier epitomises the white tropes spammed on the net and has less ammunition available from these protests.

Why would the secretary of defense deny he was in the know about the photo op with Trump posing with the Bible (upsided down though it was).

    Hope you watched Candace Owens!!

Makes no sense burying your head in the sand and behaving like an ostrich.

The facts and figures are there.

  46. Sargeant June 3, 2020 4:04 PM How come the Conservative Gov’t in Britain was preparing to kick out Caribbean Immigrants (Windrush) but is preparing to open the door for Hong Kong residents.

Because the Conservative government has plans fuh dem. Nuff nuff money will come from Hong Kong with them, along with the business that they work with. Even during the election, the Tories referred to new tax regimes for London.

They plan to walk away with the Hong Kong business, leaving the Chinese with little.

This is another reason they are leaving the EU, because they will tell the EU to sod off on tax issues, which they can do, unlike lil places like Barbados.

If you have read the reports, the Chinese govt is already alarmed about this and are demanding that the UK back off, what a joke. A totalitarian regime telling someone else that it is nothing to do with them, as expected.

The Chinese and the UK are both after that money and business.

The UK will get it, none of those investors will leave their money in China, because no matter how you grind it, even if they offer sweets and make promises, they always have control of your money.

The property developers in London (including those UK MP’s who have money in property) must have jumped to the moon on hearing that announcement. Any property near the centre of London has probably doubled in value overnight.

Unfortunately for the average UK person, it will be like Toronto and Vancouver, with Chinese and Russian money sending prices into the stratosphere.

In contrast, the Windrush generation only built the transport system, built the NHS, contributed to the UK over fifty years, but they have no major capital or business to offer the wealthy Tories and developers.

The Tories are about money, no more, no less.
