Your message to the BLOGMASTER was sent

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to soak up the resources for both under developed and developed countries. At the time of posting this blog the global medical community has been unable to inform about a vaccine. The blogmaster read the perspective of a leading Australian virologist recently where she opined that the world will have to live with the virus, in fact it will become as accepted as the Flu.

The disruption caused by COVID-19 will impact service based economies like Barbados and others in the reason where it hurts, in the breadbasket. One could rehash old arguments about the folly of putting all our eggs in one basket. If we are to work hard to move from the unsustainable position we find ourselves, we have to do more to shift our over reliance on tourism. Government’s current investment pipeline has signaled there are no immediate or medium term plans to modify the economic engines firing the economy.

If there ever was an opportunity to message our leaders there is an urgent need to reorder how we do business, it is now.

COVID-19
Since this news alert Italy is virtually on lock down. Thanks John A for always feeding the blogmaster with important information.

The local authorities based on public announcements and news coverage have been rolling out awareness campaigns, bumping up screening at ports of entry, building health infrastructure and leading discussions at the regional level to ensure a regional COVID-19 approach. Given the pandemic nature of COVID-19, it seems a matter of time before Barbados reports its first case. The biggest challenge for Barbados and service based economies is the fatalistic impact disruptions to global supply chains will bring.

  1. Now we see first had how mentally weak and useless Caribbean politicias are, they lie to the bpeople to be elected and then they depend and dependend without any Plan A or Plan B..

When somethings happens they never know what to do, stop believing these parasitic, deceitful ministers and politicians..this one does not even know what to do except to expose his people to a virus to get cash flow….just like his fellow fools in Barbados who may have to hire MORE CONSULTANTS GOING FORWARD….

What the idiot does not realize is that those same countries will ban flights to protect their own people, and ban his ass too just for good measure..

.sick of stupid, useless Caribbean politicians they are not even fit for purpose, never were but are still well paid by taxpayers..

“Antigua and Barbuda may be faced with the possibility of more imported cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID19), following an admission by Prime Minister Gaston Browne that it would be โ€œconsequential economicallyโ€, to restrict travel from the United States and the United Kingdom.

The twin island recorded the first confirmed case of the dreaded virus on Friday, and during a radio interview on Saturday, Browne stated: โ€œIf you close those two windows then, clearly, it would have a significant amount of dislocation.

โ€œIf we stop flights from outside the UK and the US, I would believe that practically all the hotels would have to close. It would mean sending home all the hotel workers; governmentโ€™s revenue would reduce significantly; we would not be able to manage our payroll and other obligations.โ€

โ€œMaybe better to conduct the meetings online.โ€
donโ€™t know why anyone would think it;s a good idea to meet face to face, why not just kiss and hug while ya being so reckless.
A dear friend wanted to meet with me and am, really, so what happened to online meet and greet, seeing as the person is a frontline professional, always exposed to the immune suppressed, compromised and fragile.
whatsapp, facebook and other technology are working just fine, why would you want to be spitting in each otherโ€™s faces.

A rather non-conformist observation there, Waru!

A โ€˜realโ€™ person capable of high intellectual thought stored in your well-wired hard drive not infected by that virulent bug called brainwashing religion.

Maybe this pandemic is sending a clear evolutionary message to mankind.

The โ€˜survival of the fittestโ€™ concept could also find โ€˜credenceโ€™ among those IT gods who have promoted their โ€˜craftโ€™ to the status of a science.

Prepare yourself for the rise of Artificial Intelligence and be assimilated by the โ€˜hum-puterโ€™ (part man part machine) virus.

Maybe Godโ€™s handmaiden, Mother Nature, is โ€˜machiningโ€™ and reconfiguring humans to exist on a planet with its changing climate not observed since the last Great Year in astronomical or any other measurement.

Let science be the new religion of the coming Digital Age by putting Yahweh back where he belongs; in the Stone Age like Zeus and Baal.

That should put a bit of fire under the simmering BU pot for โ€˜muscularโ€™ debate with Dr. GP the dubious doctor of divinity performing as the chief cook and saucepan watcher.

  3. Isnt there data which states that the virus cannot live in hot temperature
Couldnโ€™t such be the reason for low or no outbreaks in regions that have warm / hot climates

    Another false statement.

  4. The situation with Haiti maybe correlated to the fact cases reported in the Caribbean are classified as imported cases’.

  5. That is the result of no Plan A or Plan B…since along with every shite else, tourism was created for the dummies too and they never saw any reason in the last 80 years to do anything different…steupppss..lumps of fat and solid waste…collecting taxpayer’s money and tiefing as much as they can, look how it has caught up with all of them..

  6. “Maybe this pandemic is sending a clear evolutionary message to mankind.”

exactly, mankind was created to GROW and EVOLVE..not stagnate and become perpetually stupid.

  7. AGAIN…the virus does not care about your heat and can probably handle it much better than you while mutating…keep believing that while bearing in mind that the island more than likely has no ventilators and even if they have a few you can be assured that they were never maintained, do your own research as is the rule.

David dont be so quick to deemed the comment as false
The jury is still out and there are seasonal commonalities which give cause or reason according to ongoing research on the virus
Which begs the question ( going back to Hait) if washing hands could slow the virus attack on people
Haiti known as a place where relevant social services and health necessities are very low or hard to get
Then why hasnt there been an outbreak
Also Haiti has hosted tourist coming to the country during the period the virus was at it peak infection period

COVID-19 virus can be transmitted in areas with hot and humid climates

From the evidence so far, the COVID-19 virus can be transmitted in ALL AREAS, including areas with hot and humid weather. Regardless of climate, adopt protective measures if you live in, or travel to an area reporting COVID-19. The best way to protect yourself against COVID-19 is by frequently cleaning your hands. By doing this you eliminate viruses that may be on your hands and avoid infection that could occur by then touching your eyes, mouth, and nose.

  10. RE: “People are not foolish social media has done an excellent job in preparing people for what to expect while govt and officialdom scratch their head and asked โ€ what nextโ€….”

RE: “Yet no numbers has been given to anyone having the Corona Virus. It makes for scientific research as to why.”

For the duration of this ‘discussion’ on the corona virus, you seem to implying there are cases here and in an attempt to ‘fuel’ your alarmist, rhetorical political diatribe, you have been fabricating worse case scenarios and attempting to suggest ‘government’ has been reckless in its precautionary measures and is with-holding information.

Yet, there aren’t any reported cases of the virus in Barbados either. So, why don’t you ask for a “scientific research” to be done here as well?

Information on symptoms, precautionary measures to be introduced and updates on the virus, has been disseminated in the print and electronic media. There have been discussions with doctors, interviews, tips etc, EVERYDAY on CBC TV8 and StarCom Network stations through their own initiative or via GIS.

Therefore, it’s clear you either DON’T READ or you PURPOSELY IGNORE all the relevant information pertaining to the virus, just to fulfill your DISHONEST political agenda.

Maybe a better question would be if Haiti is even able to test for the virus (yet)?

Being transmitted to and surviving are two different concepts.

You should take a look at GP’s comment on temperature, see if you can find it.

  14. Again there is research that states that seasonal commonalities can impact the growth rate of the virus mostly in hot climates
Not stating that that contraction is not possible in hot climate if someone has contracted the virus from another source in another country where the virus is epidemic
Which begs the question in relation to my last paragraph why hasnt Barbados close its borders

  15. โ€ฆ and GP has identified himself as a Medical Doctor who taught medicine.

I would more tend to believe what he has to say about viruses and temperature.

He may be wrong but suppose he is right?

I know from experience that flu is around in the colder months of the year and have always reckoned it is brought (transmitted) here by visitors from colder parts.

That’s conventional wisdom, which of course may be wrong.

Even Trump knows it instinctively and he has no medical training of which I am aware.

So of course viruses can be transmitted to warmer climes!!

So lets for the moment assume the pandemic will abate in the Northern Hemisphere as the temperature rises there.

We get to see within a few months.

Unfortunately the Southern Hemisphere is the opposite so we should see the opposite unfold down south.

BUUUT, we get most of our visitors from the Northern Hemisphere.

We also know Cruise Ship Tourism has been dealt a serious blow.

We should be trying to discover what is the reason the numbers of cases in the Caribbean is so low.

โ€ฆ and for purely selfish reasons!!

It may be that it is the region to which people from the North will retreat in their colder months and people from the south in theirs.

    .. for extended stays.

How may people in the Caribbean and parts of Africa died in the Spanish Flu outbreak of 1918?

    Was it perhaps different?

I do not recall hearing my grandfather ever referring to it.

I will check my 1918 burials at Westbury Cemetery to see if there was a spike.

  16. The press has everyone focused on where it is.

Far more important is where it is not!!

As a microbiologist I suggest you read the below article and stop dissemination incorrect news.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The fever experienced by many victims is another immune response, with the body raising its internal temperature to a level at which the virus can no longer operate.

  22. john is making sense for a change. Just because a virus can be transmitted does not mean it cannot be weakened by certain conditions. I stated before that Agent Orange could indeed be right about it disappearing like the flu in the summer. I also agreed that there is unnecessary panic, and I am even more convinced of this after looking up the flu figures for the last few years. It is the newness of the virus that is causing the panic, I think. I also believe that is understandable, fear of the unknown. But the fact is that some people are going to die from the virus as many do from many viruses and all we can do is practise sensible preventative measures. I have been keeping a close eye on the figures coming out of the warmer climates or those with warm weather at this time of the year and it seems to been spreading much slower. Also there is the possibility that the symptoms are milder. All creatures and plants have their preferred climate. They may survive outside of that climate but they may not thrive. Why not viruses?

Of course, it could also be that the warm weather lessens the severity of the symptoms. Cold weather and changes in barometric pressure have an impact on some of the respiratory conditions that may cause complications. Even if we catch the virus we may be spared the high death rate.

Just a medical illiterate who could be totally wrong and so we should treat this new virus seriously until we know more.

  26. As one doctor said to a close friend, for the countries not yet reporting infections warm or cold, treat everyone as a suspected case, because of the incubation period and other factors…i think that is a commonsense diagnosis, no medical degree needed.

As others are saying …will Caribbean governments learn anything from this CATALYST FOR CHANGE to create FREE ENTERPRISE for the majority population so that progress, growth and wealth creation will no longer be the exception but the rule….ENDING THE DEPENDENCY SYNDROME that governments promote for self reasons… or will they, after this is over slide right back into the colonial dependency created for them and then PRETEND as though those countries like UK etc are forcing them to do something against their wills, eg…sending Bajans as slaves to UK to work for 8 pounds an hour and be subjected to racist brutality AND GENERATIONAL POVERTY AND BLIGHT… but we will soon see…

..i will be sure to remind them…due to their short memories.

They have this fine opportunity, let’s see if their backwardness, greed and corruption causes them to squander it.

RE POTUS tells us that once it gets hot, the virus will disappear. โ€ฆ
    .
THAT IS NOT AN UNREASONABLE SUPPOSITION AS INCREASED TEMPERATURE SHOULD DENATURE THE VIRAL PROTEINS, AND MAKE THE VIRUS INEFFECTIVE

    THAT IS FAIRLY BASIC SCIENCE

  29. The Spanish flu hit both Africa and the Caribbean in 1918.

Some parts of the Caribbean were lightly affected โ€ฆ why.

In Africa however, the “war” ports were the means of entry.

It needed to be taken there and then authorities had to ignore the quarantining ships.

“Between mid-August and late September 1918, the virulent second wave entered sub-Saharan Africa through three of its war-swollen seaports, Freetown, Cape Town and Mombasa. In each case, war-related factors played a significant role. To Freetown, the virus came from England aboard a Royal Navy warship on which it had begun to rage during the voyage south. By the time this vessel docked in Freetown on 14 August 1918, 124 of its crew had been laid low. Nonetheless, it was not placed under strict quarantine, probably because the civilian authorities there were reluctant to disrupt naval operations. Colliers were therefore permitted on board to load coal, while medical staff from other warships came over to help out in its sickbay. The result was that, within days, the portโ€™s colliers and dock labourers were going down with โ€œSpanishโ€ flu like ninepins, as were sailors aboard the other warships. From them it quickly spread to Freetownโ€™s general population, 70 percent of whom were stricken within a fortnight. Describing a situation that was to become common throughout Africa in the coming weeks, the governor reported, โ€œThe disease spread with devastating rapidity, disorganizing everything. Everybody was attacked almost at once.โ€[3]”

  31. Let’s see all those billions and billions of dollars spent in university tuition by taxpayers over the decades produce some geniuses to move these countries from tourism dependency only.

Not speaking about the leaders they are not even a little bit intelligent let alone geniuses.

Guyana can be as hot as hades, so can Trinidad..both hotter than Barbados.

    This on Reddit.

“Confirmed case of coronavirus in Trinidad and Tobago Trinidad national here and today I received news that a woman on the island of Tobago has contracted the coronavirus, carnival has just ended and I can only imagine the number of people she has infected given that Tobago is a prime tourist destination.”

Don’t think Trinidad has other people’s confidence in their heat weakening anything especially that virus….it’s called self preservation…and of course they had their jump up already so ..here we go.

    https://trinidadexpress.com/news/day-border-lock-down-imposed/article_62f2bfaa-67a1-11ea-bc1d-dbd2d578ec70.html

“Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley has announced Trinidad and Tobago will be locking down its borders for the next 14 days.

He said only nationals of this country will be allowed to enter.

The Prime Minister said there will be exceptions for some foreigners to enter such as CARPHA employees and health personnel.”

“WITH the number of confirmed cases of the dreaded Coronavirus in Guyana pegged at four, there is fear in some quarters that several sectors will suffer a blow from the growing pandemic, specifically the tourism sector.”

  32. “THAT IS NOT AN UNREASONABLE SUPPOSITION.”

you are actually listening to GP who should be in Germany negotiating the huffing of any virus vaccine, which means real trouble.. and Prince Donald…good for you.

  33. I remember as a child when we got sick the old people would say to sweat the fever out
And in so doing many times the body react in a positive manner to make way for feeling better
I also remember drinking plenty hot fluids along with an aspirin and covered in a blanket
The sweating effect which was caused by the raising of the body temperature because of being wrapped in a blanket help to reduce the cold spells
I am not a scientists but as i say i gained knowledge from observation .

  34. What we have to worry about is that the virus DOES NOT force us to reorder how we manage our affairs at a national and household level. If we reorder how we manage our affairs then we would have nothing to worry about. If we continue to be lacking in vision, planning, willpower, effective leadership, active citizenship and energy we will soon regret it.

“There is a tide in the affairs of men, Which taken at the flood, leads on to fortune. Omitted, all the voyage of their life is bound in shallows and in miseries. On such a full sea are we now afloat. And we must take the current when it serves, or lose our ventures.”

    William Shakespeare

This is an OPPORTUNE time to pause and reflect. This pain need not be in vain!

  35. “To Freetown, the virus came from England aboard a Royal Navy warship on which it had begun to rage during the voyage south.”

These murderous plagues and diseases almost ALWAYS come from UK..wonder why.

  36. We are saying the same thing. If we reorder now it will be because of Covid-19- up to now we are happy to pin our economic fortune on a consumption behaviour fueled by tourism.

  37. Why wouldn’t I listen to GP when he is being reasonable instead of deliberately provocative? As a matter of fact I was actually thinking along those lines BEFORE he or Agent Orange said it. That is one of the reasons I have not panicked as some of you seem to be doing. If you had read my posts you would have seen that.

Ebola actually alarmed me far more than this virus. It seemed an awful way to die. Still didn’t panic though.

  40. No one is panicking, just looking at the bigger opportunities…not to be wasted.

  41. No one is taking chances, this can very well go on for years if not stopped in it’s tracks.

Our Chief Medical Officer in Ottawa in a press statement last night informed us that the ten known cases in the City means that from 100 and up to 1000 in the City could be infected and don’t know it. Says everyone should stay home and only go out for necessities, like walking the dog, medicines, etc. Wash, wash, wash with soap and water. If there is no access to soap and water use sanitizer. Use disposalbe gloves when pumping gas and if you have to use public facilities, to use a paper towel to open the door and then discard.
