Barbados 2017 Murders Revisited – Who Was Charged?

For 2017, I counted a total of at least 31 murders for the year. In my previous posts, the focus has always been on that of the victim and included details such as their name, age, location where it happened, how and their gender. This post will shift the focus to those who have been charged with the murder of the victims.

Methodology

The methodology employed is fairly simple:

  1. Choose the time period (2017).
  2. Run a Google search for the victim’s name.
  3. Collect and compile details (name, address, age, date charged) on those charged based on media reports found in Google search results.

A point worth noting is that for victims searched and with zero results of person/persons being charged, it could mean one of at least two things: either no one has been charged (as yet) or a person(s) were charged, but for whatever reason, news of it was not found at the time of my Google query.

Another point worth noting is that the results do not speak to motive, or relationship between murderer and victim, nor the details around the murderers socio-economic circumstances, et cetera.

Results

Of the 31 murders recorded, I found reports of murder charges, via Google, for 14 victims. For the remainder 17, I could find no reports of any charges.

Multiple persons (2 in one murder to as much as 6 in another) were charged in 5 of the 14 murders.

A total of 28 persons were charged for the 14 murders. Those charged were as young as 17 years old while the eldest was 47 years old. The average age of those charged was 27 years old.

  • I wonder if searching the nations newspapers including Barbados today would reduce the number without information.

If (in truth) there were no arrests then the number of unsolved murder is above 50%. Not a good statistics.

Continue with your good work as you fill in gaps in our knowledge of what is going on in our society.

    @TheOGazerts

I’m doubtful, as the count came from what Google discovered as a result of indexing sites like The Nation, Barbados Today, et al.

However, you never know. I’ll follow up on your idea and try running searches directly via The Nation & Barbados Today, for the victims not found by Google.

Mr. HAL Austin often states that the standard of journalism in Barbados is appalling

And, you, though you are estranged from Hal, of late, ALWAYS HAVE ECHOED THIS SENTIMENT.

Therefore you have me concerned about the purpose of this blog.

    Let Piece the Legend explain.

    WTF!

Your statement is axiomatic is it not?

If an internet search is based on reporting, and a continuum in such reporting, AND YOU CONCUR THAT SAID CONTINUUM IS SORELY IMPAIRED, how can you come on September the 24th and make a blog which queries the absence of these details Honourable Blogmaster?

This is indeed another WTF MOMENT!

How de RH a query pun de internet in recent murders can arrive at motive?

Is you, rather is the Honourable Blogmaster an obeah man?

How he going know that bit of information about motive or how will newspapers know anything about motive?

Then we see that the article is seeking socio economic information on murders in 2019!

Where you, sorry he going get this socioeconomic information?

Where is that data going to come from?

The stated address of a convicted murderer?

You understand the issue here about this blog article?

There is no way that the data that is being suggested can reasonably be collected and collated EVEN FROM THE DIRECT INTERROGATION OF THE NATION AND ADVOCATE or other newspapers

  • @ Pachamama the Profound,

I am glad you are back in the fray.

Your question has been posed in the context of remarks I have levelled at the BU BORG of late.

I, while not part of a Band Wagon, do say things that concur with an opinion that is being floated by said bandwagon.

“One swallow does not a summer make..”

The Real David has a serious problem to manage and I will explain.

The current socioeconomic conditions in Barbados prescribe a limited amount of options for our country.

More critical than the financial predicament the country is suffering is the continuing endemic issue of sheepism that has embraced our citizenry in all spheres of our society

    Who is The Voice Pachamama?

And where will the people and sheeple hear it?

At this moment The Voice is Barbados Underground THEREFORE THE BORG HAS BEEN ENTRUSTED WITH A RESPONSIBILITY THAT SUPERCEDES ITS FICKLE HABITS and political allegiances

Notwithstanding this quixotic viewpoint, we the few who comment here, realise the responsibility the BU BORG is tasked with.

David IS NOT A Mariposa, or WARU, or Simple Simon or The Legend, to advance partisan politics.

History will be unforgiving of him AND HIS LESS SKILLED HOUSEHOLD, if he fails in this responsibility.

If this platform fails OR IS SUBVERTED BY THE MUGABE REGIME, if he invites Mugabe to the Household, and undermines the 4th estate, he would have been party to the destruction of THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE

De ole man does not “talk” to the rest of the BORG because they are young and inexperienced, but I hold David to a superlative national standard where he is accountable to our Nation

Correct. The post was written by me and posted to my blog. David, on occasion and when he sees fit, shares same on BU for discussion.

As for the paragraph in question being quoted on BU by Piece The Legend, I am not exactly sure what the issue is. Maybe someone can explain?

Based on media reports, for 2017, I counted 31. Of those 31, I found individuals charged with murder in 14 deaths (based on my searches done over the last 24 to 48 hours).

If tomorrow others are found and subsequently charged in the deaths of the remaining 17, then I’m assuming it will make the news and I will amend my post accordingly. This should imply that the results, to date, are just that: to date.

Beyond the oft quoted paragraph, what, if any, are the thoughts and opinions on the basic profile of those charged, e.g., a large portion of them being from St. Michael, or the ages of those charged?

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    @Piece The Legend

Under no mechanism whatsoever can I arrive at specific socio-economic data, or make any general claims, et cetera. I was never trying to do so, and I made this very clear when I included the following section in the main post on my blog:

“Another point worth noting is that the results do not speak to motive, or relationship between murderer and victim, nor the details around the murderers socio-economic circumstances, et cetera.”

Address and age were two demographic variables readily available in the news reports from The Nation, Barbados Today, Loop News (my sources), so I collected and compiled them. If someone or some persons on BU are trying to make wider statements based on two demographic variables alone, then he/she (or they) will not get very far.

A physical address is merely a starting point, as is the age, for further questions. However, my blog cannot answer further questions such as why did the killer kill, their motive, relationship with victim (as I am not part of the interview process the RBPF conducts), and my blog cannot uncover if there are any links between independent and dependent variables (because there is a paucity in the number/type of variables that I collected). Recall this paragraph again:

“Another point worth noting is that the results do not speak to motive, or relationship between murderer and victim, nor the details around the murderers socio-economic circumstances, et cetera.”

Finally, this post, as are previous posts on murders and fuel prices are descriptive in nature. It speaks to the who and what, not the why. The title of the post is: Barbados 2017 Murders Revisited – Who Was Charged? NOT WHY. In no part of my post did I conclude or infer anything.

    You’re welcome

The fact of this interaction with Barbados Underground is that, of the people and sheeple who visit and read the blog THERE ARE A FEW WHO blog and of those few, fewer who are capable of making meaningful contribution that intrigue de ole man.

Politics aside, once the socioeconomic discourse is put aside, and we bash the Duopoly, it leaves little mental landscape where the few people who can discuss other topics meaningfully, can converse.

What you should be looking for Amit is an open source tool which has enough base maps to permit you to interrogate AND DISPLAY YOUR DATA MEANINGFULLY.

And simplistically enough for the people and sheeple here.

    http://www.gvsig.com/en

Here is a desktop application which you might experiment with on your desktop that would allow you to test drive that data (on the available basemaps)

The upside is the application is free but the downside is base maps that are granular enough to show streets in Barbados (without you needing too many conversions)

If you could show a cluster that correlated the origins of the perpetrators OR THE PLACE WHERE THESE KILLINGS ARE HAPPENING over the course of 10 years of data, such density mappings done using timelapse videos would go a much longer way in improving the understanding of BU people and sheeple that a standalone article.

Needless to say Amit, you can expect that the RH teives that abound in the cyberspace corridors of Barbados Underground, to run straight to the Law Faculty and the Social Sciences department to tek credit for your project CAUSE THIS IS WHAT BAJANS DO!

The greater project is going to be “How you Can Design an Initiative that will decrease Murders in these Hotspots” which de ole man know how to do too but dat be ‘A Bridge Too Far’ for Bajans

  • The author is doing a good job in aggregating the murder statistics as published in the media, but as they are they do not add anything criminologically to our knowledge. As I have suggested before, a bit more leg work, more details, will make the figures invaluable: marital status, occupational status, education level, relationship to the victims, household, etc.
Unless we know all this, nonsense about seven secondary schools accounting for the majority of crimes and so-called parenting will get more publicity than they deserve. If you are doing it, do it well. All criticisms are not negative.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++

    @Hal Austin

I agree that all criticism is not negative, further agree that from the perspective of a trained or professional criminologist (or sociologist for that matter), the data represents mere descriptive statistics.

Respectfully disagree, in this particular case, with ‘if you are doing it, do it well.’ I disagree because it comes dangerously close to saying ‘if you are doing it, do it well, or not at all…’

Yes, in an ideal world – which others have mentioned and I have acknowledged – I would have greater depth besides age, location, et cetera. But that is in an ideal world, probably one where there is more than one person doing it, and with funding, access to those charged and family victims for interviewing, et cetera. Point taken.

However, prior to me collecting, sorting and posting the data, there has been a paucity in terms of public availability for even the most basic info that I have now collected for almost 3 years. In fact, when looking over my blog stats, the majority of daily traffic is bound for the murder stats (this is even prior to David highlighting them on BU). Based on that, and some other feedback, what exists today appears to fills a gap (albeit a basic gap) in the minds of some people.

So yes, we agree that more can be done. But as with any basic or descriptive research, what I have done, or tried to do (and will continue to do), is the basic analysis – someone has to do it – and time and resources permitting, evolve the analysis as both you and others have rightfully said.

Alternatively, maybe others out there will take what I have provided as a starting point and build (and hopefully give credit to sources, et cetera). I say publicly because I am sure my basic analysis already exists in a filing cabinet somewhere in the darkness.

The data sources I rely on are media reports, what is preventing them from providing regular basic or advanced analysis? Surely they are better funded in terms of time and money?

The problem that I set out to initially solve was to make it easily and publicly accesible versus buried and filed under lock and key. The flashlight is on, but I admit, it is far from being a floodlight at this stage. However, I prefer a little light in comparison to complete darkness. Once again, thank you for the constructive feedback and criticism.

    Cheers.

By itself, the statistics dont “drive” interest and de ole man will explain that

I join those contributors in commending your efforts in providing crime stats.

Have you ever thought of contacting Cheryl Willoughby or any of the research officers at the Criminal Justice Research & Planning Unit?

In October 2016, during a CJRPU career showcase for secondary school students at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Director Cheryl Willoughby said the Unit was gathering information based on empirical data as it relates to crime in Barbados.

So that, for example, anyone who may want to know many persons committed homicides over a five-year period, what are the demographics of persons who are committing certain aspects of crime, what is the recidivism rate of crime in Barbados etc., could source such information from the Unit.

This would not only provide an analytical framework for policymakers to make decisions based on empirical data rather than anecdotal information………. but for individuals to compile statistics for projects such as yours as well.

Information from the CJRPU together with information gathered through your independent research, could be systematically evaluated, thereby enabling you identify the relevant data to form specific conclusions, for example, such as those identified by Piece the Legend.

Recall the comments I made earlier on gender diversity in the board rooms of Caribbean conglomerates. I wrote that post several months ago, and it is an interesting research area. So too are the fuel prices that I track.

This, to me, begs a bigger question: Why bother to begin with? There are only 24 hours in a day and it is an unpaid job. So why bother? My answer is simple. If through this basic collection of murder stats, some good comes out of it for my home Barbados (advanced research, reduced crime and violence, better socio-economic policies, better family environments, et cetera, et cetera), then I am happy, even if means not getting in a footnote or a mention in the bibliography (mind you, I’d still like to be credited where appropriate, LOL).

    Cheers.

  • I love this phrase “The perfect is the enemy of the good”.
I hope you settle on a course of action that you can maintain over an extended period of time.

For me, just having the numbers is enough. I challenge others to produce one othe link that mentions the number of murders in Barbados for the year so far.

In a water scarce country, some water in the pipe every now and then is a blessing. Let others dream of fountains.

I hope you settle on a course of action that you can maintain over an extended period of time.

I join those contributors in commending your efforts in providing crime stats.

Have you ever thought of contacting Cheryl Willoughby or any of the research officers at the Criminal Justice Research & Planning Unit?

Sorry for the late reply. Agree with your full response, and thanks for the info re: the organization and the person to contact.

  • The 70 murder cases stuck in the criminal justice system are in for some special attention.

That was the message sent out by Attorney General Dale Marshall yesterday after seven new judges were sworn in at Government House by Governor General Dame Sandra Mason.
He said having five Supreme Courts sitting simultaneously would go a long way in trying to bring some relief to accused people as well as families of victims, by tackling the 70 murder cases which were stuck in the system, along with another 900-plus cases.
“Those 70 murder cases are not statistics we should in any way be proud of. I expect that over the next year and half to two years, we would be able to break the backlog of both civil and criminal cases in Barbados,” the Attorney General said. (Quote)

Proof that the criminal justice system has failed.

Even the suspicious manner if civer up of the British lady who told her story of her being attacked by an assailant and govt ignored her statement and preference to use another story of stove on 🔥

  • The question still remains how many reported deaths govt or authorities have not given reason or account for causes of death
Months have gone by since no reason was given for the fire that cause the elderly woman and her sons death
The lady found dead at the water edge
The father and his children ( in what area has these deaths been categorized)
All these having questions which need to be answered
Last but not least the controversial death of the British lady which leaves a lingering stench of cover up

I hope you continue your good work.
I said this before: there was at time when one had to google extensively to determine the numb er of murders in Barbados. It was easier to get number for Trinidad and Jamaica.

Others may produce numbers and so it would appear as if there was some duplication of effort. If you were to stop, I am willing to bet that in a month or two the others would also stop.

    Please keep up the effort.
