@Enuff
“Up to now you can’t say why the man is not deserving. In a small country how do you escape proximity to “power/decision-making”?”

Once I see you heading down this road, I know things bad.
No, No, No.
The onus is upon those conferring the honour to highlight the contributions, which are being recognized. Period.
Is Barbados, the country conferring the knighthood, doing so for work in Bermuda, Belize, Caymans, Turks and a little in Barbados too. Or for the leverage used in the BLP leadership battles.
Seems like another Marston Gibson were a Bajan leaves home and spends much of their career working elsewhere, only to return home and be knighted.
To me, if the PM had an ounce of moral decency, she would avoid selecting her father at all costs, especially in the first few opportunities she gets to bestow such an honour. What’s the rush? Is the man ill? – Northern Observer

To be honest the blogmaster does not pay too much attention to the New Year Honours list. The selection appears to be less than transparent and more importantly we are not enthused by a system that awards titles that is anchored to an irrelevant colonial past.

The New Year Honours List for 2019 released by the Government Information Service is as follows [blogmaster’s emphasis]:-

The Queen has been graciously pleased to approve the following awards in the 2019 New Year Honours:

KNIGHT BACHELOR (KtBach)

  • Assad John HALOUTE for services to the hospitality industry and philanthropy

KNIGHT COMMANDER OF THE ORDER OF SAINT MICHAEL AND SAINT GEORGE (KCMG)

  • Elliott Deighton MOTTLEY for services to the legal profession, diplomatic service and the community

ORDER OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE

COMMANDER OF THE ORDER OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE (CBE)

  • Dr. Frances Louise CHANDLER, OBE for services to agriculture and sustainable development

OFFICER OF THE ORDER OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE (OBE)

  • Ms. Cynthia Joan WILLIAMS for services to nursing and the community

MEMBER OF THE ORDER OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE (MBE)

  • Reverend Hughson Carlos INNISS for services to youth empowerment and the fight against HIV/AIDS
  • John Wayne Anderson WATTS for services to environmental health

The decision to award Elliott Mottley a knighthood has attracted robust and muscular public comment across the length and breath of Barbados, notwithstanding the din generated by the holiday season. There is no need to be prolix with this matter. A repost of the blogmaster’s too brief comment to Northern Observer is enough.

Agree with this comment, the optics are bad and the brazenness of doing it in the first year of term is a foreboding act.

The opinion of the blogmaster is not meant to ignore Elliott’s Mottley’s contribution in his field of work. However, if the Prime Minister is serious about being a change agent she must avoid decisions that will distract and deepen citizen apathy. The herculean task to turn the country around is bigger than the aggrandisement of any family member. Even if that family member is her father. In fact some will suggest with good reason that the controversial waiver of the tax and penalties (NOT TAX DUE) in the amount of $1,051,872.28 to Elliott Mottley which came out of an audit of Mottley’s accounts is reward enough.

A word to the Prime Minister should be sufficient.

  1. …against the elderly and dead AND THEIR LIVING BENEFICIARIES…ON FACEBOOK..

Estate THEFTS…I don’t believe qualifies anyone for anything…except a very long prison term.

  2. David
There was a waiver of INTEREST. Is Elliott Mottley the only Barbadian to ever receive such a waiver?

  3. Ah only which UK would return that guillotine to their now closed towers…they love to copy UK am sure they will want one too…which should be used only on them.

  4. Fortunately, 45govt, I don’t know who you are so I must assume that you are as “white” as the driven British snow that you so yearn to be identified with.

  5. From day one Mia has demonstrate an attitude of “entilement” a word which resonates in my mind to actions such as favours and kindred ties and privileges
A word which OSA made mention in describing Mia
Now “a”Word which aptly describes her for all to see

  6. I don’t know about Owen though, he is another one, he still has not said why Mia is not suitable, we can only presume she must have STOLEN HIS WIFE..which does not qualify…lol

  7. lol BT you forgot Mussolini, Mugabe,Ceausescu For most people this knighthood is not going to change anything, for some like myself will think its a bad reflection on the administration ,others will think like ego its about time, yet others will be totally in a dilemma not knowing if they are supposed to go down on one knee when he enters the room… or two.

These awards are dolled out to remove any possibility of dissenting voices from expressing their displeasure of government policies. They are also used as a tool to ensure that the corrupt can continue to forge ever closer ties whilst ensuring that any mal-practice is kept ring-fenced. This all spells bad news for the Barbados public.

  9. “…..the ORIGIN of the titles IS buckingham palace…”

You are simply engaging in semantics…… a trivial point that revolves around mere words rather than significant issues.

If you are referring to these RECENTLY bestowed titles…. YES…… I AGREE they came with approval from Buckingham Palace…… as well as the ones bestowed upon individuals even after independence.

However, to state these titles, knighthoods, whatever, in general…… ORIGINATED from Buckingham Palace….. IN MY OPINION……is incorrect, especially when one takes into consideration people were given knighthoods from as far back as the Crusades.

But……as I previously mentioned, the ORIGINS of knighthoods are UNIMPORTANT at THIS TIME and is a TOPIC for ANOTHER discussion.

SQUABBLING about titles and Buckingham Palace just to prove one is “right or wrong” is IRRELEVANT…….

………….and more so, since the SUBSTANTIVE issue here for discussion is the awarding of Elliot Mottley with a knighthood.

AND THIS IS WHERE WE SHOULD FOCUS OUR ATTENTION.

@Artax, well noted. I agree with the thrust of your post particularly the last point.

However, even as most commentators question the scruples/optics of the award there are few who speak to the main issue : does the man ‘deserve’ the honour?

Is he any more or less a deserving public servant than others for his extraordinary and outstanding contribution in service to Barbados or to humanity at large.

That should be the primary question frankly…the optics thing makes for great chatter tho!

Incidentally, US presidents have absolute pardon power as most here know…but oh boy it would be cat piss n pepper if a Bajan PM had that authority with MAM now at the con!

Looka, when all is said and done Sir Elliot did not see a need to decline this offer as he surely does not agree with all a wanna dat his daughter ‘gave anything to him’ …. as far as he is concerned he worked his entire life to reach this crowning moment and he possibly thinks it overdue !

We can chatter but NO where he goes will ANYONE place an asterisk next to his ‘SIR’ or whisper and say ‘wait tha is de oldbtine maguffy mayor lawyer son who fight with Barrow and Tom and den left bout heh to be a chief justice, get run out de people place and now he daughter is PM she give he a knighthood…wait dat is he in trute’..😂

Ain’t going happen…. so have a great new year all…

And BTW…I was shocked this morn when I read a headline about 50% of Americans having a direct relative who was incarcerated…oh lordie I realized that applies to we Bajans too… Oh how life has changed due to the scourge of drugs.

    I gone.

Only seven months in office and this woman has become obsessed with the trappings of office. She ain’t no change agent.

  12. Very well analyzed ..Talking Loud…something like rushing to put Cheltenham in the senate..and this one here and that one there…and don’t forget Haynes at the NIS pension fund, while under her breath in her last press conference she oozed out…”oh I will deal with CLICO next year…”

am sure most people missed that understand the breath revelation..

  13. If Mottley’s knighthood is obscene, what about the previous ones–former Cabinet colleagues, relatives or former/current Cabinet colleagues, cousins, former teachers, former/current priests, friends, personal lawyer, school/university friend? If we’re going to hone in on optics, let’s not close one eye or half open one.

  14. @enuff

If you read the brief blog on the matter it opens by suggesting the award of knighthoods is steeped in colonial and political BS, it is not based on merit.

  15. Waru did she mean tomorrow

  16. WTF are you on about?

  17. I think OSA should get his “Sir” before the PM’s father……….. let’s stir up the pot…lol.

  18. Count the silver.

  19. This reminds me about Donald Trump. No matter how much you cuss Trump and mention how silly he is…..he is still President of the USA.

  20. Ks
    Hahahaaaaaa!

  21. That’s exactly our point Enuff…I certainly will not be playing any favourites when it comes to exposure, everyone is fair game as long as you show disdain and disrespect to the people who not only pay their salaries, but whose tax dollars educated their asses in the last 60 years ..and who they turned on and SOLD OUT immediately they became qualified to practice law or medicine or whatever…..and to this day, they refuse to admit they are committing crimes against the people and country…….they refuse to stop.

  22. Just caught up on this post.

    @Artax,
you appear to be a honest young man with brains. I might poke at you now and then but I wish you the very best.

Don’t be so fair that you harm yourself or ‘tek’ food from your family mouth….

  23. This reminds me about Donald Trump. No matter how much you cuss Trump and mention how silly he is…..he is still President of the USA.

No matter what Arthur said or how he feels about Mia Mottley……. CANNOT change the fact that SHE IS THE PRIME MINISTER OF BARBADOS.

    Uh Lie??????

  24. WARU
So you’re suggesting we vote then? I just wish to remind the blog that we vote for MPs.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
You are as big a disappointment as Mia has been… (wink)

So…your moral standard is just to NOT exceed past shiite done?
    Stop embarrassing yourself nuh…..

It is no wonder that you are unable to guide the PM intelligently….
    as Bushie had hoped.

  26. Barbados is a strange island anyway…the govt is begging for money to get haitian men back home ….yet there would be no problem getting donations if they were guyanese

  27. “If you read the brief blog on the matter it opens by suggesting the award of knighthoods is steeped in colonial and political BS, it is not based on merit.”

So why are we behaving as if it is “not colonial and political BS”?

  28. Mariposa memory began on May 24, 2018

    Enuff’s memories ended on May 24, 2018.

The DLP got kicked out because of arrogance and incompetence. You cannot continuously refer to past behavior as a justification for Mia’s current behavior.

The BLP needs to up its game. Have a higher standard than the last set of wild boys.

  29. @enuff

Because some of us bought a ticket to board BLP flight CHANGE2018.

  30. Find me 100 common men who REALLY CARES if the PM father or Gearbox become knighted.

  31. He was passed over for a knighthood by previous administrations (BLP/DLP).
When his daughter became PM the opportunity to be Knighted became doable.
This is probably the only way he would ever receive the title he longed for.
Maybe the crying on TV should be factored in as one of the reasons he received the knighthood.

  32. The rejection of the DLP has been interpreted as a complete embrace of the BLP. It is not.

A word of advice to Mia… Get rid of the yes men/women. Hire a few that will give you an honest opinion.

One outspoken, unafraid and honest person would make the world of difference.

  33. To be fair……the people MUST decide when they NO LONGER WANT an ACCUSED DESPOT on their payroll..AND representing them in the international community….the optics are bad for the country….hope that is of some guidance to you.

Ya also vote for candidates…but ah see that escapes you…lol

  34. Robert Lucas @ 6:56 a.m.

    WOW ! ! ! WHAT A BOMBSHELL YOU DROPPED THERE !

YOU SAY ELLIOT MOTTLEY WAS GIVEN 24 HOURS TO LEAVE BERMUDA OR SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES OF BEING ARRESTED FOR PERVERTING THE COURSE OF JUSTICE.

WOW AGAIN – MY MAN – THIS STINKS TO HIGH HEAVENS.

There are also other charges of a sensitive nature which I will not repeat here – because I do not know if they are true – but 45 govt keep telling us that he is the least deserving of such an award.

Then I had another shocker from Artax with his post at 7:36 a.m. – I could not dis agree with one jot of which he wrote.

Further Artax highlighted and brought back to memory certain other distasteful acts which Mia Mottley did – like awarding Delisle Bradshaw an award called – ‘The Champion of Honour’. Steupes.

    Lord save us all !

Now people will realise what I have been getting at when I started highlighting certain concerns.

My concern was NOT that the BLP would get into office – but that with all that was out there about the person leading the party – that there should be more scrutiny of what we were getting into.

Owen warned us.He told us in a press conference with Peter Thorne of CBC on the steps of Parliament of a number of wrong doings of Ms Mottley. – for example with the half million dollars which disappeared from the party’s account etc

He told us again at an interview in his office at Cave Hill – that she was not suitable for office because of certain proclivities and other things.

He told us again – after the debacle of the horrible treatment of the sitting MP for Christ Church West – Maria Agard – and he said he wanted to clear his conscience – about attempts Cynthia Forde and Santia Bradshaw made to throw him out of the party for voicing dissent in certain decisions Mia made.

Finally he made a last attempt to open the people’s eyes – by his press conference about 2 weeks before the elections – outlining how whenever he left the country dastardly acts were done against his firm instructions – like the waver of taxes to Mottley’s father.

YET THE PEOPLE CRIED – GIVE US BARABAS !

Then we knew of all the violent reports of biting off sensitive parts (beating and biting) – for which according to the last Government – the lady refused to take part in discussions on the Sexual Harrassment Act in Parliament when it was being debated – and other discussions on Domestic Violence.

We heard about questionable Building Contracts awarded to a Waste Haule Remover (who originally came from her constituency) – and whose business she invested in – and is a partner.Contracts such as the Crab Hill Police Station – where the said waste haul remover initially gave up th contract because he recognized he was not competent in the field – yet he was given back the contract.

We were told in and out of Parliament about the taping of a sitting Prime Minister’s phone and other senior politicians e.g. the then Leader of the Opposition.

Yet the media – especially the Nation newspaper and David Ellis and ALL his moderators on that talk show – gave Mia Mottley a free pass – even to some extent Barbados Today – until they came alive and started to critique her action.

You remember in that first interview with Ellis – she came out hard after Kaymar Jordan – and quick so afterwards we see Kaymar’s contract not being renewed.

WE ARE IN A DANGEROUS PLACE PEOPLE.

NOTICE THE REACTIONS OF THOSE FEEDING OR EXPECTING TO BE FED FROM THE FATTED CALF UNDER THIS NEW GOVERNMENT ? – TO THEM HER ACTION IS ALL GOOD.

    Lord help us all !

I WILL END WITH THE WORDS IN ARTAX’S FINAL SENTENCE – “ELLIOT MOTTLEY’S ACCEPTANCE OF THIS HONOUR MAY BE AN INDICATION THAT ‘UNSCRUPOLOUS BEHAVIOUR – MAY BE HEREDITARY.

    SELAH !

  35. Mariposa…based on Owens video, it was obvious there was political infighting….

….BUT…I hope you can appreciate why the blogs are necessary to keep ACCUSED DESPOTS IN LINE…most despots end up before The Hague when they become overbearing…

  36. @BushTea
“You are as big a disappointment as Mia has been… (wink)”

He is painful at timed. If he was my son, I would take a belt to him (and I do not believe in flogging). He needs to drop the Mariposa act and stop defending sh!Te.

Would love to see these young men succeed without selling their souls.

Wow. Judging from many of these comments the country is doomed to fall into pitiful insignificance. I hope they are in the minority. Have any of these naysayers ever made any contribution to the nation at all?

  38. Longing for any thing does not make receiving the deed right
Here is a man who is being doubled rewarded for doing nothing
First he receives millions of tax payers money without having to repay one cent all done by his daughter
Now in full view of the people gives him a knight hood
    The question remains for what
Notice in the video OSA words like Unilateral and entitlement are ringing true
The next shoe to drop which Mia is demonstrating right before our eyes is meglomania

  39. Funny how we have a reversal after May 24.

Mariposa moved from defending sh!t to excellent attack mode.

Enuff moved from excellent attack mode to sh!tty defense mode.

Wondering if Mariposa’s contract ends today…. Hoping she got a new contract just before May 24, 2018.

  40. To hear the yardfowls cackle and crow……that is how they misinterpret it….but they keep missing the part where the people did not VOTE IN BLP…they VOTED OUT DLP……because that is ALL THEY HAD TO COMFORTABLY WORK WITH…AT THE TIME…

the electorate only has one more corrupt government to SEVER PERMANENTLY FROM THE PARLIAMENT…tick tock…

  41. BushTea
If that’s your answer, then again you get an F! Context is always important. By the way, do you want me nominate and vote for you in a new format? Sir Bush Tea. 🤣🤣🤣

  42. Artax is a totally innocent young man.

  43. In my opinion, a strong attack can be made against Mia without getting into sexual behavior. That part of the attack makes me wonder if it is true or a lie and makes me question the rest of the attack.

Might be good for a laugh at the back of a truck speech. Not effective here,

  44. Politics as we know it will change!!!

For better or worse is debatable.

What we have here is a desperate bid to get a bite before the cookie crumbles!!

  45. It is the kind of example that Bajans used to hold in ridicule when it was done in other countries, no more, we have ceded any moral high ground that we once held and are rolling in the mud with the other pigs in a naked patronage appointment.

I have said that these honours should be abolished and now we have an egregious example of political pork, perhaps Bajans will finally take note.

BTW BFP covered the Bermuda angle in 2008 let google be your friend

What Buckingham Palace do you though?

HM ,the Queen,”graciously approved”. She is ,constitutionally, our gracious Queen by choice.
What do you want the Queen to do? Act ungraciously? Could Dear!!

  47. Tony Blair hasn’t!

  48. @Sargeant,

Given what you have said, and the other concerns regularly expressed in BU, is it fair to say Barbados is a failed state? And can we assume from the perception of corruption that it will likely end in collective tears?

  49. @ Enuff
It was not an answer … more like a plea.
Bushie don’t want no stinking ‘Sir.’…. to do what with…?

All Bushie needs is some tough nylon.. and a little gas from time to time for the whacker…
…and a source already exists for these needs.

    You CAN make a difference.
you have the capacity and the intellect..
Why do you need to play the role of a yardfowl…?

leave that to others of lesser capacity.
