Who are the “Father” and “Mother” of that unique aggregation of people organized as a body politic on 166 square miles of Caribbean land and possessed of a distinctive cultural and social way of life, that we know of as the nation of Barbados?
Well, the term “Father of the Nation” is a well known honorific title that– in many nations — is given to a man who is considered to be the driving force behind the establishment of “his” nation, and who — in many instances –has made a monumental sacrifice (even a “blood sacrifice” of his very life) for his people.
But the term “Mother of the Nation” is not nearly as well known nor as widely applied and conferred!
Yet, if one looks closely enough one will surely discover that behind the establishment of every nation there is, in addition to a male “driving force”, a similar female “driving force”. And that for every man who made a sacred sacrifice of his life for the people, that there was a similarly heroic and self-sacrificing woman.
And so it was and is with the nation of Barbados !
We therefore make bold to say that anyone with a discerning eye can perceive in the history of Barbados both a “Father of the nation” and a “Mother of the nation” !
And just as a Father and Mother together create the fertilized egg from which a biological child emerges, the titles of “Father” and “Mother” of the nation must be applied to those two male and female historical personalities who played critical roles in giving birth to the very possibility, the very seed or root of the precious nation that we Barbadians possess today.
You see, over the first two centuries of the history of Barbados it was difficult to even conceive of the “possibility” of a Barbadian nation, simply because Barbados was a “slave society” in which a sizeable majority of its sons and daughters were denied the status of human beings and were held by their enslavers to be mere soul-less chattels or things.
Thus, if a majority of a people are not even considered to be human beings by the governmental and official structures of a society, how can one talk sensibly or meaningfully about being a nation?
No, in order for a nation to be established in Barbados, slavery first had to be abolished. And therefore, those historical personalities who played the critical roles in striking the death blow to the evil system of slavery would have to be considered the seminal figures who planted the very seeds of Barbadian nationhood.
Our search for the “Father” and “Mother” of the nation must therefore take us back to the great early 19th century slave rebellion that irretrievably set in train the processes that led ineluctably to the abolition of slavery in 1834— the 1816 Bussa Rebellion!
It is therefore relatively easy for us to identify the “Father” of our nation. Clearly, that title must go to the Right Excellent General Bussa, the Commander of the revolutionary forces of 1816, and an historical figure who has been conferred with the title of National Hero of Barbados.
But upon whom should the title of “Mother” of the nation be conferred?
Well, in the 1818 historical document entitled “Report from a Select Committee of the House of Assembly appointed to inquire into the origin, causes and progress of the late Insurrection” — the Bussa Rebellion— we read the following testimony of “Robert”, an enslaved man attached to Simmons Plantation:-
“………..some time the last year, he heard the negroes were all to be freed on New-year’s Day. That Nanny Grig (a negro woman at Simmons, who said she could read) was the first person who told the Negroes at Simmons so: and she said she had read it in the Newspapers, and that her Master was very uneasy at it: that she was always talking about it to the negroes, and told them that they were all damned fools to work, for that she would not, as freedom they were sure to get. That , about a fortnight after New-year’s Day, she said the Negroes were to be freed on Easter-Monday, and the only way to get it was to fight for it; and the way they were to do, was to set fire, as that was the way they did in Saint Domingo.”
Here then we see emerging from the historical record the figure of a mature literate enslaved Creole black woman who worked in the household of Simmons Plantation in the parish of St. Philip, and who was clearly the revolutionary ideologue of the rebel forces — a revolutionary ideologue who was committed to a military solution to terminating the evil system of slavery, and who was relentless in spreading that message to her fellow enslaved brothers and sisters.
The fact that she was called “Nanny” is not necessarily suggestive of an occupation as a nursemaid or a children’s caregiver, but could speak to her ethnic identity. You see, in the case of the Jamaican “Nanny” — Nanny of the Maroons — the Encyclopedia of African-American Culture and History informs us that the name “Nanny” was derived from the Akan word “Nanani”, meaning “ancestress” or “mother”, and therefore is suggestive of an Akan ethnic ancestry .
Thus, our Nanny Grig may well have been a Barbados-born “creole” woman of Akan (present day Ghana) ethnicity.
What we do know for a fact is that General Bussa’s revolutionary troops did faithfully adhere to Nanny Grig’s admonition to commence a battle aimed at securing freedom for themselves on Easter- Monday of 1816 and to use arson as a primary methodology of insurrection!
Undoubtedly, as a literate, well informed and intelligent woman, Nanny Grig would have known that the chances of success were slim, and that the possibility of defeat and death was very real. After all, the revolutionary troops were not only facing a number of well armed local parish militias, but also the might of the British Imperial Army stationed at St Ann’s fort at the Garrison in St Michael.
It is extremely likely therefore that Nanny Grig had her eyes set on a more distant and futuristic goal: that she was striking a blow against Slavery and making the ultimate sacrifice in order that future generations of black or African Barbadians would no longer have to live in a condition of enslavement.
And surely she did make the ultimate sacrifice, for not only was the Rebellion put down— largely through the efforts of the professional black soldiers of the British West India Regiment – but the racist white parish militias then proceeded to inflict a regime of terror on the black population, burning and otherwise destroying the houses and property of blacks and executing hundreds of black women, children and men!
Without a doubt, Nanny Grig either perished in the fighting or was subsequently executed – perhaps hanged, beheaded and hung up on a post – in light of her role as a major leader of the Rebellion.
But who can doubt that her courage, activism and sacrifice played a major role in bringing down the evil system of slavery and hastening the day of the emergence of a genuine Barbadian nation.
The reality is that the Bussa Rebellion sent such a forceful message of uncompromising hostility to Slavery that in 1819, a full three years after the Rebellion, the Governor of Barbados, Lord Combermere, was still writing to the English Colonial Office warning them that “the public mind (in white Barbados) is ever tremblingly alive to the dangers of insurrection.”
It is not surprising therefore that when – in 1833 – the British Secretary of State for the colonies introduced  the Emancipation Act in the British Parliament, he expressed the view that “they were compelled to act; for they felt that take what course they might, it could not be attended with greater evil than any attempt to uphold the existing state of things.”
Thus, it was really the courageous military activism of the Bussas and Nanny Grigs that was ultimately responsible for the abolition of slavery.
And this is why, in the final analysis, no-one other than our heroic Nanny Grig must be conferred with the title of “Mother of the Nation.”

  1. Comrade Commissioner,

Barbados needs people like Bussa and Grig, made of steel, no weak “educated” wimps who can only survive in A/C cooled rooms and who need a fat SUV to feel proud. Barbados need the ancient wisdom of Goddess Bim, Oya, Ori and of the gods of the sea and the sky, no weak DLP-pastors who insult the Lord.

If Bussa came back he would establish a people´s court to wipe out all the weakness of the many committees from 2008 to 2018 with endless discussions, but no action.

Bussa is for Barbados what Beowulf is for England, Sigurd for the Germanic tribes and El Cid for Spain. Let us hope that one day there will be a new dawn, a new age of heroes.

  2. Yeah..too many paper educated weaklings abound on the island, all brainwashed, dumbed down and useless apologists, whose only desires and goals are to obtain paper wealth…a bunch of empty vessels with no substance and easily manipulated by any outside forces and the local descendants of militia demons and indentured servants..

A waste of oxygen, 52 wasted years.

  3. Great article!
Nany Grig, Mother of our Nation.
Would love to see ot in film.

  4. One major problem, the timing.

Bussa, and Nanny Grig were almost 200 years too late for a claim of fatherhood or motherhood to hold any water.

And then there is the problem of how would a figment of somebody’s imagination impregnate Nanny Grigg!!

  5. The fact that she was called “Nanny” is not necessarily suggestive of an occupation as a nursemaid or a children’s caregiver, but could speak to her ethnic identity. Never heard this one before but if you look at the number of slaves named Nanny in Barbados and Jamaica in 1817 you will see that Nanny was a very common name.

In Jamaica, there were 2,085 the oldest one being “Big Nanny” who was at the time of the return, 94.

You will also se there were “Old Nanny” and “Nanny Senior”

In Barbados, there were 1,476 in 1817 the oldest being “Nanny” who was 100 years old.

In Barbados, there were “Great Nanny”, 90 years old,”Great Nanny Moore”, 80 years old and “Old Nanny Judy”, 70 years old.

If you look at the percentage of children in the slave population in 1817 you will see that a Nanny was a must.

  6. I suspect Nanny Grigg was first known simply as Grigg.

I’ll bet she earned the name Nanny because she was good with children.

In 1817 there were 417 slaves in Barbados with Grigg in their name showing Grigg was a normal name at the time.

  7. Police archives of the hearings at Holetown Police Station would reveal a female named Nanny(it was pronounced Nah-née) was a regular inhabitant of the cells there circa 1940’s to 50’s.She resided at a nearby village and was celebrated for her repeated beating of policemen sent to have her up before the magistrate Sidney Nurse. That was in the days to the ‘Doris’.Nanny,an unusual female, stood up for her perceived rights by flooring many a policeman. She had 2 lovely daughters and a son.The children were very well behaved. The son whom the boys in the village called Tommy Dick worked in the public service.

  8. Grig is an interesting word.

The oldest slave in 1817 with that name was born in 1752.

So, how was the word “Grig” used at that time?

    SOED!!!

Shorter Oxford English Dictionary says in 1629 it indicated a dwarf.

It also says it was used to describe an extravagantly lively person.

I am going to suggest Nanny Grigg was an exuberant individual, full of life and to whom children were naturally attracted.

She was small and absolutely fun to be around.

  9. https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/grig

    Etymology[edit]
The word is often used in the phrase “merry as a grig”. The word is of uncertain origin, though various theories have been suggested, such as a corruption of “merry as a cricket” or “merry as a Greek”, as in Shakespeare’s Troilus and Cressida: “Then she’s a merry Greek indeed.” Johnson suggested that the word originally meant “anything below the natural size” (compare Swedish krik and Scots crick).

There is Nothing wrong in People desiring Freedom…However Commie Sing Song is Making Up a Story to Suit his Narrative. Typical of the Left who are famous for Rewriting and Creating History…If you don’t have one make it up.

Simon Bolivar freed Venezuela from the Spanish and Chavez and Maduro want to Claim that they are like him, a Liberator. Commie Sing Song is Creating a Narrative that people can believe like how they believe in Simon Bolivar that it was through his efforts that he Freed the Venezuelan people.

Communist Leaders like to tell people that they are Liberators, they are there to Serve the people, they Love the people and they would do everything to help the people. They are willing to take up Arms for the people to Liberate them from their hard lives and when they get the Power somehow Liberty and Freedom begins to Feel like Tyranny and Oppression. People that Disagree Disappear. The Love for the people Turns to Distrust of the people. Their Service to the people begins to Feels like Massa Squared! Their better life for the people Feel like Misery and Destitution. Their Freedom begins to Fell like which of my Family are going to Spy and talk about me. Whatever they promise it’s somehow the Exact Opposite materialises.

Our Commie Sing Song is an AVID COMMUNIST. His Role Models in this Region are Cuba and Venezuela with his Greatest Fondness is Venezuela. And having seen what his Comrades have done in Venezuela by taking Simon Bolivar as a Liberator that got rid of Spain and formed Venezuela as a Nation and having witnessed the Co-opting of the Liberator theme by the Chavez/Maduro Regime to Cast themselves in the Light of Liberators with their SOCIALIST Revolution so in order to emulate his Mentors Venezuela he wants to Form a Narrative building it from the Ground up by Co-opting persons of the past to Create a Narrative of Revolution. All in the name of Creating a better Society under Commie Rule.

We have seen this played before but now he is Trying to SHAPE his Narrative on Incidences of the past to Shape the Future. I Believe we should remember our Past, the Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

Bussa was a Slave in the Past and he did not want to be a Slave or Remain a Slave and he Rebelled with Friends and Associates knowing full well that Failure could mean Death, Yet he Rebelled. Living as a Slave is not good that’s where the Ugly comes in; he and his associates were Killed that is where the Bad comes in. The Movement to Stop Slavery was formed in the Same Societies that Encouraged Slavery previously that is where the Good comes in.

Although I admire Bussa for his fight or Freedom he did not make a difference to Slavery in Barbados. Slavery was Abolished by an Act of Parliament in England. It is Ironic that Mr. Commie Sing Song is Singing his Song to Invoke Freedom while his Philosophy Breeds Tyranny. People in Venezuela are fleeing the Country by Millions, Trinidad our neighbour has had such an influx of Venezuelan Refugees that there is Big Debate in Parliament to do with Immigration and how to handle the Refugees.

Mr. Commie Sing Song has not Grown Up. The Narrative of a Hero in our Past that can be called a Revolutionary, that can be linked to Freedom that can be linked to Heritage of our Culture to liken it to a Present Day Revolution is his New Lighting of the Embers to Create this Revolution where they can Spin the Narrative of being Liberators.

No thank you Mr. Commie Sing Song, when are you getting this Job to go to Venezuela? We can’t WAIT NA MORE go Live your Favourite Revolution just done bring it here in Bim because we done want No Misery, Destitution, Tyranny, Oppression and Loss of Freedom. Stop Trying to Pull the Wool Over the Eyes of Bajan’s we can tell your Intent, it is as Clear as Night is From Day.

When I was young I believed in some of the Thoughts of Communism because I had Heart, but when I grew older I recognised their UN-Workableness as Winston Churchill said …

  11. @ Gabriel,

Your Nah-nee story is almost true. She was known to violently resist arrest and the policemen did not want to be seen beating up a woman in public. lol

There was one exception I know of.
She grabbed a police van driver by his shirt and would not let go until a sargeant grabbed her and tossed her into a cell and slammed the door.

This took place while magistrates court was in session at Holetown.

  12. Nanny I think was an earned name.

It was current in Barbados, Jamaica and other English Colonies where the Quaker influence existed.

A Nanny was firm and a bit of “busybody” reporting children to parents if they transgressed.

A Nanny kept people in order.

We now say it takes a village to raise a child but key in that raising was the Nanny, who has sadly disappeared from Barbadian life.

A Nanny took an interest in the behaviour of all children … adults too!!

Trinidad, a British Colony from 1797 with little or no Quaker influence has one example of Nanny in a name.

    https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?qh=TUrJZ%2BppGIsE2cImbcW3Fg%3D%3D&db=BritishSlaves&gss=sfs28_ms_db&new=1&rank=1&msT=1&gsfn=nanny&gsfn_x=1&gskw=trinidad%201817&gskw_x=1&MSAV=1&uidh=ud5

    Mauritius likewise.

This also rebuts any African linkage in the name.

Surely if it was linked to Africa one would find the name everywhere that African slaves were found.

Bussa lacks that attribute as well, widespread usage in the database.

It is a very uncommon Barbadian slave name, unlike Nanny which is very common.

You can search Bussa/Busso/Bussoe in the 800K names on the site I have used above and that’s what you can see for yourself.

We have been fed another bill of goods by our historians and politicians.

I hope we would apply the same intense negativism when speaking of the decadent royal family. No wonder then that Nelson still there and we cant stand the thought of our GG not giving “throne” speech o behalf of her majesty and the attendant european pageantry that makes us the laughing stock of all progressive thinkers.
When wunnuh dun research the name Nanny wunnuh should turn and research: Elizabeth, Philip, John and George.
Brother Commissiong should have learnt by now that: Where ignorance is bliss it is folly to be wise.
There is no people on this earth who want to wipe out all their Afrocentric history like we Bajans. This place is still “little England”in all its glory. Pathetic jokers.

But only until your good Lord pays Her Majesty Queen Lizzy an inevitable timely visit one day coming very soon to collect the debt due from every human.

I would suggest that we should be mature enough to face up to the coming reality and make provision for the necessary changes which must come about to face our own future of demanding maturity which is already upon us.

The current government has the absolute majority required to make comprehensive meaningful changes to the Bajan system of governance without requiring the support of some elected Opposition.

There is absolutely no need to have a referendum to remake Barbados into the image of a modern sophisticated population whose leaders and ‘elite’ members do not have to swear allegiance to a monarch or deity which for a long ago time has either become totally irrelevant or has disappeared from the realm of technological realities.

You, Sir Lancelot the Johnny, have crossed an anthropological bridge too far.

The slaves who were kidnapped to the land of the Dodo bird did not come from West Africa but from the other Eastern side of that vast continent.

Cultural East Africa is as far different from West Africa as an Englishman is from the natives of the tundra steppes of Russia.

If you think the choice of Nanny Grig for the ‘Mother’ of the Bajan nation is a bit too ‘royal black’ why don’t you argue for someone in-between?

What about the ‘existing’ national heroine Sarah Anne Gill? Don’t you think she would fit your Quaker bill?

After all, like the Mandingo Bussa, she was no Lucrezia Borgia on the Bajan Falconhurst plantation!

“Curiously, of all the Irish shipped out as slaves, not one is known to have returned to Ireland to tell their tales. Many, if not most, died on the ships transporting them or from overwork and abusive treatment on the plantations. The Irish that did obtain their freedom frequently emigrated on to the American mainland, while others moved to adjoining islands. On Montserrat, seven of every 10 whites were Irish. Comparable 1678 census figures for the other Leeward Islands were: 26 per cent Irish on Antigua; 22 per cent on Nevis; and 10 per cent on St Christopher. Although 21,700 Irish slaves were purchased by Barbados planters from 1641 to 1649, there never seemed to have been more than about 8 to 10 thousand surviving at any one time. What happened to them? Well, the pages of the telephone directories on the West Indies islands are filled with Irish names, but virtually none of these black Irish know anything about their ancestors or their history. On the other hand, many West Indies natives spoke Gaelic right up until recent years. They know they are strong survivors who descended from black white slaves, but only in the last few years have any of them taken an interest in their heritage”.

At Risk of Being Scrubbed from History are They Less Worthy…

The history of the Irish slaves has long been suppressed, and a modern movement of Irish slavery denial has even gained mainstream acceptance.

Britain was the first major power to abolish slavery in all of its colonies as few where in the British home land of Wales Ireland and Scotland. However as the major player in the development of commerce and trade mainly farming in its territory it did exploit the trade in human slave labour readily provided by the Muslims of the east coast of Africa. If I was the descendant of a slave bought to this island paradise I would today be well pleased I was not living in East Africa with the crime and poverty or should we blame the British for that to well believe that too. Believe it or not Miller, after reading the Constitution created by the british for Barbados…I am thinking right along those lines, I said so the very next day after reading it, they will screw up a republic, they are not yet mature enough to handle the work required to sustain and maintain a republic, the best course of action is to let the evolving future eras erase and phase out the monarchy as it is bound to.

The society is no more broke than it was at the beginning and has been for 52 years , it is no more discriminatory as was the written intent back then, the society still has flavours of being enslaved mentally…let time do the rest while the conscious people dismantle the still existing institutions of racism and disenfranchisement of the people and create a mature society with mature less stupid leaders….a republic will not work with an enduring slave mentality still in place..

Winston Churchill was a Man and a man of his time. He fought in many wars for England. Although you say that he used gas he used the least destructive. Even imperfect men can do Great things how many Artist that we read about were drunks or behaved badly. In watching the show about Einstein the Brightest among us and he was not a perfect man. All dem that shout Racism believe that they are perfect.

Churchill’s views on race were incomparable to Hitler’s murderous interpretation of racial hierarchy, Toye says. “Although Churchill did think that white people were superior, that didn’t mean he necessarily thought it was OK to treat non-white people in an inhumane way.”

    Poison gas
Churchill has been criticised for advocating the use of chemical weapons – primarily against Kurds and Afghans.
“I cannot understand this squeamishness about the use of gas,” he wrote in a memo during his role as minister for war and air in 1919.
“I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilised tribes,” he continued.

These quotes have been used by critics such as Noam Chomsky to attack Churchill.
But the controversy is misplaced, says Warren Dockter, a research fellow at the University of Cambridge and the author of Winston Churchill and the Islamic World. “What he was proposing to use in Mesopotamia was lachrymatory gas, which is essentially tear gas, not mustard gas.”

Churchill’s 1919 memo continued: “The moral effect should be so good that the loss of life should be reduced to a minimum. It is not necessary to use only the most deadly gasses: gasses can be used which cause great inconvenience and would spread a lively terror and yet would leave no serious permanent effect on most of those affected.”

@ Tee WHITE LIES…. We In Barbados would be Speaking German if it was not for Winston Churchill…Germany had taken over the whole of Europe and Northern Africa and were attacking Brittan…The Germans had Sophisticated Armament of those times, but the English had Churchill and they would not Give up they were willing to die rather than give in…. On to Victory and Barbados as a British Colony is Spared. That is meaningless to Marxist like you.

Likewise with Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson

JOHN, it would be interesting to learn what part (s) of my article you disagree with and why.
    David Comissiong

    ++++++++++++++++++++

I thought I was pretty explicit in the two points I raised.

  40. England used poison gas on the Germans in WWI in retaliation for its use against them.

    https://winstonchurchill.org/publications/finest-hour/finest-hour-160/leading-myths-churchill-advocated-the-first-use-of-lethal-gas/

  41. Winston Churchill was a racist just like Hitler. Churchill was a defender of Britain’s racist empire and Hitler was a great admirer of it. Even Leopold Amery, Churchill’s Secretary of State for India described his views as similar to Hitler’s. Why is it that we have people coming on this blog in 2018 defending and justifying white supremacy?

  42. Churchill was a nationalist, just like Hitler, Mussolini, Mahatma Ghandi, Nkrumah, Burnham, Barrow, Mandela, Castro … Trump etc etc etc!!

JOHN and others, when you defend a murderous white supremacist arch racist like Winston Churchill, you are implicitly telling your black fellow citizens that you view them with disdain and have little or no respect for them.

Commie Sing Song you have more White than Black in you, because of your white Blood are you a White Supremacist? Because of your Black Blood everything seems Racist to you? When you die and meet your Maker (whether you believe in him or not, you will meet him) and if your maker is Black are you going to ask him to remove the white parts of you? And should he be white are you going to ask him to remove the Black Parts of you? And if he is Brown which part are you going to request that he cuts out? And if you say he is a Spirit and has no Colour why does Colour play such a Big Role in your life NOW?

You see, the Intent of your Article in the First Place is to Gin Up Emotions and Use it to Divide People and you should know better as a Lawyer. White people Commit Crimes and Black people Commit Crimes, So it is You with your Racist Accusations that have the problem. Most supporting your Spew on this Blog have One Thing in Common they believe in Totalitarianism like you, which is Atheist of Freedom.

Believe me Commie Sing Song I do not like to Reply to your Bile but I see through you like a Pane of Glass and your Motives are as the Noon Day Sun and I am Compelled to Contend against your False Dogma.

  45. DC

Would you not agree that Churchill was a Nationalist no different to Castro or Trump or any of the others on the list I gave?

It isn’t possible to defend dead people.

The best we can do is learn from their lives which like all of our own lives, are replete with errors!!

So, what was unclear about the two points I made in response to your article?

Weren’t the two names you mentioned just as I said, almost two centuries too late to be considered as father and mother of Barbados?

Second, historians in the late 90’s did not have the benefit of computer access to the database of slaves who were freed as a result of the emancipation proclamation. It became easily available in 2007/8. I know, I went through every name on the microfilm roll in 2002/3 to learn from what ever written records 80,000 Bajans left us.

Nanny has no link to Africa.

I will add a third way in which I disagree with your article.

The Constitution in the preamble makes it clear.

It is God who “we the people of Barbados” recognize as supreme!!

God is the Father of Barbados.

  46. What is the difference between a nationalist and a racist / bigot?

Correction…Totalitarianism like you, which is Antithesis of Freedom.

What nonsense…every black person in the Caribbean has a link to Africa, it can be pinned down to exact villages and tribes, science is now that accurate…even from thousands of years back all your great grands by X are showing up,…even the native american bloodlines can be traced and seen in Caribbean black people…..also the middle eastern bloodlines, central asian bloodline…. all the oldest tribes are showing up in modern day bloodlines of Caribbean people.

The scanadnavian/ireland/scotland/wales/UK/europe both east and west/iberian peninsula etc are also showing up but as minute traces, since they are not among the oldest tribes and the admix would have been more recent…like 10,000 years or less….besides they would have come out of the caucus region in russia and settled across europe…

Even in my bloodlines of family tree, no matter how much caucus blood or high the precentage…the African ancestry is still dominant.

Instead of posting rubbish, take the ancestry test and post factual information devoid of lies and badminded intensions…intelligent people are taking the test.
