The following photographs are of some of the unfinished vendors’ stalls located opposite the temporary market on Probyn Street (the site where the Plaza Cinema was located). These stalls were being built around 2010 to accommodate the vendors from the old Fairchild Street market, but remain unfinished and have become the homes for vagrants. This is a waste of taxes in a time when the government has been talking about reducing government spending. On the eve of a budget which promises more belt tightening measures for Barbadian taxpayers shouldn’t the government be leading by example?

There is a simple explanation for those stalls remaining unfinished for so long, and that is: the people who are intended to occupy the stalls are not Bizzy.

  4. We have a situation where some of the vendors from the old Fairchild Street market were relocated to the Golden Square market. However, the old stalls they left behind are now being occupied by Guyanese and those who were unable to secure any have constructed illegal stalls in that area.

Conditions in that area are unsanitary, with men and women urinating or defecating in the surrounding areas, while trash is indiscriminately strewn anywhere. Worst, food is being sold there.

This is something the market authorities must look at.

There are about four (4) taps outside the Golden Square market for use by those who occupy or visit the market. What is most disturbing is that a farmer is allowed to fill a number of containers with water from these taps on a daily basis, which he uses for his animals.

This man is able to reduce consumption of his personal water thereby saving money on his water bill, while the government will have to pay for excess water usage because of this situation.

The market authorities should look into this matter and reprimand the person in charge of the Golden Square market for allowing this nonsense to continue.

We have had previous discussions on here about the vending situation and the market before. We have even examined segments of the legislation found online to determine what rules govern vending and realise that their are quite outdated but applicable in some situations. What I observed in the situation with vending is that if there is an authority in place, it certainly is not doing a meaningful job in dealing with the issues of vending, both legally and illegally. Vending remains problematic in the city, on highways and by-ways. The way the vendors are operating always seem to tend towards tacky and poor-rakey. If the government was ever serious about improving the activities of vending in the city they would improve the market outlets to reflect changing times, improve the current regulations governing markets and enforce stipulations that return vendors back into these markets.
