There is a cricket saying, if a batsman does not watch the ball carefully onto the bat, bad things are likely to happen. The local news will be consumed with the resignation of former prime minister Owen Arthur from the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) after being a member for 43 years for the next week or two. Arthur’s resignation – which took many Barbadians  by surprise – has triggered a flood of speculation about how it will influence the porakey political landscape of Barbados. Sadly we have found yet another politically motivated event to distract from the important job of rebuilding Barbados. Has anybody noticed Barbados dropped from 38 to 59 in the Human Development Index?

The imposition of the Municipal Solid Waster Tax (MSWT) on Barbadians by the government has proved to be the most controversial government initiative since the 8% salary cut on civil servants salaries in the 90s. Coincidentally, that austerity measure was also imposed by a Democratic Labour Party (DLP) government battling to manage in harsh economic conditions. What the MSWT has done is to provoke a greater level of interest by the public in how government is managing the affairs of the country. It has resulted in a strident call by ordinary Barbadians for government to be transparent in how decisions are being made. The MSWT is good for Barbados because it aggravated Barbadians to march, again. Because of the muni tax Barbadians were able to force the government to claw back on a policy measure which was signed-off. The tax forced a former prime minister of fourteen years, and a member of a political party for forty three to resign. The wreck caused by the muni tax is a work in progress.

Owen Arthur’s resignation will hog up the news space with stoking from the DLP spin doctors because it removes the spotlight from a government labouring to find ways to spur the economy. BU will not be distracted from the issue which has been the catalyst for unprecedented rising public discontent in the government. Unless there is dramatic improvement in the economy between now and the next general election the discussion will be whether Mara Thompson and Dennis Kellman will retain their seats, two DLP safe seats.  The BLP, currently in disarray, has time on their side to fix the wrongs.

There is a strong feeling the MSWT is unjust and unless the government is able to convince Barbadians otherwise this will be an issue on the next general election platform. What makes this issue upsetting for many is the refusal or inability of the minister of the environment Denis Lowe to effectively interact with the public to answer many valid questions and concerns.  No where in the world will a government propose to build a USD300 million Waste to Energy Plant using new technology (plasma gasification) and expect to implement as a business as usual project.  The discussion which is currently taking Barbados by storm should have been encouraged by the government BEFORE the decision to sign a MOU with Cahill Energy. Any sensible government would have engaged a more transparent approach to introducing the technology of plasma gasification to Barbados.  Even more disgusting is the flat refusal by Lowe to engage the most visible NGO on the environment in Barbados , The Future Trust.

It is interesting that two large initiatives the government has launched are being championed by two ministers who are not very forthcoming with sharing information with the public.  The government has placed a lot of store on a renewable energy program and a waste to energy initiative, BU agrees with the approach, but Ministers Denis Lowe and Darcy Boyce are two of the lease likely to win the hearts and minds of Barbadians on any issue which require a champion. If the government of Barbados is interested in being transparent it is advised to take the job of effectively communicating with Barbadians more seriously.  Frankly, Barbadians have become very frustrated at the corn beef approach adopted by BOTH political parties to secure popularity. This is the age of social media which has fuelled a different expectation how Barbadians want to be informed.

We hear from Jepter Ince  – his shortcomings notwithstanding – more than Darcy Boyce and Denis Lowe, why?

Great mind game from Owen Authur…! Tony Blair used the same tact and wS elected for third time… He then thought he was immortal; Iraq war followed shortly. Owen knows the people of Barbados prefer him to Mia… If the people calls for him he’ll come out of his so-called retirement and unleash himself onto Barbados…!

  3. @brief

The strength of a prime minister can be measured in the capacity to make decisions even if it means overruling a minister without fear or favour. Take Trinidad’s Prime Minister who overruled her Sports minister this week to allow the cricket team to retain the name Trinidad to prefix Red Steel. Would never have happened in Barbados. We have ministers doing shiite and unafraid of reprisal from the PM.

  4. @David
Nonsense, it does not mater if MAM’s motive is political, her march is aligned with how ordinary people feel.
    +++++++++
Your theory is that Mia won some sort of political victory from that march, this was a Pyrrhic victory because the price of that victory was the alienation of Owen. It allowed him to walk away and instead of being inside the tent pissing out he will be outside pissing in and will sow enough doubt about her leadership that those BLP backers who are mainly Owen supporters may sit on their hands next time or vote for the other Party.

Despite the sometimes lopsided results of the General Election the actual vote varies by a small percentage and that may be enough to derail her chances.

It never ceases to amaze me how people have great faith in Pol Parties and Pols. Dem wusser than USED CAR Salesmen! Dem only good for PULLING WOOL over peeps Eyes.LAUGHABLE!

Moneybrain……I am now of the opinion that bajans just love the 2 party, DLP/BLP government, it gives them much more to complain about without actually getting up and doing something about being lied to, sold out, having they and their children’s money stolen by politicians and their business partners/bribers, just more of the same, it’s best to stay in North America, Europe, where ever you are and have a good laugh, if nothing else it’s great comic relief..

Piece…you see for yourself, i mean it does not seem like any of them care, there is no one to actually do anything, as long as they get to wuk up, thief a little something, in ACs case look as stupid and empty headed as possible….none of the politicians and their yardfowls care, they are forgetting however, that their asses will grow old, gray, decrepit and useless and the young people will remember all the wicked shit they did. Their followers are always the weakest link.

Lifechanger……don’t know if you have noticed but it’s only a certain type of individual, lawyer etc who actually aspire to become politicians, most of them are easily manipulated by the minorities, easily impressed with useless titles, materialistic, no naked spirituality, everything is earthbound in their narrow world, they are weak individuals and only show strength when it’s time to manipulate the electorate around election time. The biggest thing in their lives is a man-made title.

The stronger more intelligent folk would not be interested in lowering their dignity to such levels to become corrupt, self-serving politicians, by extension, the electorate would not be interested in listening to more intelligent people.

Sarge, for you to write the above you really don’t know what really is going down, do you now, NCO.

Very few are really backing OSA in his nonsense. OSA is affected in a serious way by his diabetes.
OSA is now a political eunuch.

What is being played out on the ground, i.e. among the electorate, is that OSA can’t win any general election with or without the BLP and his small band of impotent disaffected grumpy fogeys of yesteryear whose overly enlarged political prostate for an ego will prevent them from pissing with any force or effect, whether inside or outside the tent.

  9. @Miller
You missed the gist of what I wrote, I don’t expect Owen to contest any coming election. I wrote “sow enough doubt about her leadership that those BLP backers who are mainly Owen supporters may sit on their hands next time or vote for the other Party.” That means the disaffected voters who vote personality rather than Party and are supportive of Owen may just stay home next time the bell is rung.

    I stand by Pyrrhic victory.

    Good day,
For me, a person unlearns Bajan arrogance when he knows he is always among worthy human beings; being alone fosters presumption. The yonger Bajan people are the more arrogant because they always associate with their own peers, those who are all really nothing but who would like to be very important.
Looking through some of the Bloggs, and has been out here many times ovet the years, even my daughter states ( who lives in America, but is visiting,) she is amazed at the youngsters here. They haven’t a reasonable chance at a good job, let alone a mortgage. The many beggers, the lack of law enforcement, and health care for the older folk is discrace full. And the general gangster arrogance, as she puts it, adds to the general let down of the experience here.
    Enjoy your day.

You certainly don’t know human nature. Do you really feel a majority of people (including the OSA sour grapes lot) will be inclined to vote for the DLP either by commission or omission to or from the voting booth after this current administration literally and figuratively runs the local economy into the ground with pending mass unemployment, further tax increases and with a devaluation on the horizon?

I am putting it to you, Sarge, that the DLP would be very, very lucky to retain more than 2 seats when the bell rings and which could be sooner than you think.

Do you really feel that the BLP lost the last elections (or should I say the DLP won) just out of sheer coincidence?
Can you now appreciate why it was ‘arranged’ from Above why OSA lost? Can you imagine what would have become of MAM had the BLP won and OSA returned as PM?
Think man, think! Forces were at work higher than you can imagine. Ask Bush Tea if you doubt the annunaki! LOL!!!!

Lifechanger….the young learned that behavior from their elders, the older generation in Barbados, it’s learned behavior…..children tend to live what they learn. There is also a tunnel vision that starts with the leaders and trickles down to the whole society.

  13. It is always difficult for a former PM of the stature of Arthur to walk behind anyone who has not trotted the path. IF Mia is to assume the leadership Arthur had to learn to toe the party line or hush. His resignation gives Mia a better chance to unleash her brand of leadership on the party. The country seems to be with her. We shall see.

  14. What is the difference between voting against a bill and calling for its repeal after passage ?

  15. David
I think you should keep a balance approach as the administrator of this blog.
You should give the DLP and BLP as hard a time as possible to get them to come around to bringing the people into their confidence.
You should be supporting the formation of a third party.
You are coming over like you are a Mia fan and hatred for Stuart.
You must question just like Lowe how much money is Mia receiving from the Paradise project as the lawyer and not opposition leader.
If you were Prime Minister you would have dismissed Mia three thousand in public as over twenty thousand went to Soca on the hIll,ten thousand to CPL cricket and today thousands at Bushy park.
Owen said in today’s Nation that Stuart was decent because he would have told Mia some words that Leroy Trotman called muscular.
    You know Owen wasn’t easy.

  16. “David should be supporting the formation of a third party?”

    Why?

  18. @Clone

Another DLP supporter you are hence the rebuke? Read carefully, if the BU household believes the DLP is doing shiite we will post it. If you believe by our analysis of the situation playing out we are BLP hailers that is your right to do so but shows you are simplistic in your conclusion. Here it is again, Arthur needs to expose the goods on Mia or shut the hell up. How often has BU posted this comment? Yet you accuse BU of being a BLP sympathizer? BU holds no brief for Mia or Arthur or any politico for that matter, we care about a flawed governance system that allows these snake oil politicos to sell their BS to an unsuspecting population.

By the way, a third party has to emerge anchored to a philosophical mooring.

  19. Because I was following this blog from the time it started and his positions were supportive of the DLP.The DLP did not do the things they said they would do and now he is sympathetic towards the BLP with the same players eg Noel Lynch, Glyne Clarke,Mia Mottley.
By the way how do we classify a Barbadian as brilliant. What is the criteria used?
I am always hearing that Mia is Brilliant.
Brilliant because of Edutech or the construction of the new prison?
Eductech is a colossal failure with many schools computer labs are metal junkyards. That is over 475 million dollars and still counting.

  20. @Clone

It has not stop you from supporting the DLP no?

BU supported the DLP this is true pre 2007 and a couple years after. Then the same BS, NO CHANGE. If a CREDIBLE third party appears on the seen we will have a look at them BUT until that happens we will call it as we see it, out with the DLP and let the chips fall wherever. The DLP has 3 years to shape up or they will likely be in the political wilderness for a LONG time.

  21. If a person is fair
PM Stuart to most Barbados comes over as decent and so he won the election as that. Hate or not that is a fact

  22. @Clone

What is it you don’t understand that this is not about being decent person. This is about managing the affairs of a country by articulating a vision and importantly persuading the people to walk with you. DO you understand that Stuart in our first pass the pole system won the general election by less than 4,000 votes and a 2 seat margin? Try to understand what is required here. This is the problem with many Bajans, a cuhdere mentality always win.

“Owen said in today’s Nation that Stuart was decent because he would have told Mia some words that Leroy Trotman called muscular. You know Owen wasn’t easy.”

Are you referring to similar words he, Stuart, used in his contribution to the first DLP administration budget to ‘undress’ OSA and make him look like a pissy incompetent immoral little boy.
What about the missing (or should it be ‘stolen’) file prepared by some American agency the same OSA was accused of being instrumental in performing a David Copperfield act on ?

You mean the same trick he played on OSA with the note passed in Parliament to trade Mia like a political prostitute involved in human trafficking ?

You mean the extremely belittling language used to describe the drunkard crook and liar as repeated during the last campaign on DLP platforms culminating with the Brittons Hill eulogy to morally bury OSA for good?

  24. Someone must tell bajans that they are suffering because on this blog it said that Barbadians are suffering. Peter Wickham said that Owen Arthur move CONDEMNED the Barbadian people to four more years of DLP rule. The Majority people have no problem with that. From JUNE 1 until JULY 27 fetes with tickets costing from 75-400 dollars were being sold out. People are surviving this rough patch but for sure are not suffering. Some people just have they priorities wrong.

    Stop talking shiite do!!!
    Sargeant is right.

That march was Stuart and Stinkler’s march….just waiting for someone of note to call it….Mia shiite!!
…also, diabetes or not, from a practical, commonsense angle, Owen makes the most sense BY FAR when talking about strategies to fix the economy….
….of course he is who mash um up – by signing those shiite trade agreements and locking us into CARICOM…but note that dispite this, he had the BALLS to apply an environmental tax instead of a shiite tax……
Stinkler has no sense, …and Froon has neither sense or balls….
…..and Mia is worse that Twindledee and Twindledum….
ANYONE now who supports EITHER the Bees or Dees deserve to have their brass bowls pissed into….except AC, whose bowl already overfloweth..

Owen’s BEST move was to RESIGN….who knows, …he and Caswell may start BUP….. 🙂

  26. @Clone

Use your brain, because 10 or 20 thousand are out feting you have extrapolated that thousands others are not? Have you read the Central Reports and listen to the people at the financial institutions about rising delinquency? What about some people having misplaced priorities?

  27. David
In the first past the post electoral system, the person with the highest number of votes enters the parliament be it one vote or 4000 votes. That is our system right now so we live with it and don’t complain after the fact.

  28. David
How can you then extrapolate that three thousand marchers the country is behind Mia.
Three thousand of the Barbadian population is about 0.01%

You forget that according to your previous rants and ravings before the shit hit the solid waste fan OSA sold all the country’s assets to foreigners. Remember you were the chief architect of the PARO Economics Advertisement. So what else is there to sell to fix the economy; solid waste shite to Foreigner Bush Tea?

Your new found hero has the same chances of fixing the economy as the PDC. It’s like a castrated diabetic man trying to impregnate a menopausal woman who has undergone tubal litigation. Right, misogynist?

  30. David,

It is clear that you are shifting the goal posts in defining what is a party to what is a credible party.

The term “credible” in describing a party does absolutely nothing to add or substract from the fact that a party – in Caribbean politics – is an association of people which, operating under a specific name, has as its primary purpose of existence the winning of government office.

The term “credible” is absolutely useless and meaningless as that – in its application by a user – it can only be used to describe what the user thinks or would think about certain (should be) aspects of a given party.

The use or non use of the term does not stop the party from existing.

  32. You are missing the point but you are entitled.

    @PDC

  33. Why doesn’t Suckoo shut the hell up talking about people expressing their right to protest in march is using a tactic of revolution. 36. David,

We will again attempt to broaden your understanding of some of the planks underpinning much of what is currently the CUP’s prospective political electoral strategy.

Such an attempt comes about in view of a few undeclared but false assumptions you did make in your above address to us.

Thus, to reiterate, there is the PDC and there are the relevant other parties making up the Coalition of Unified Parties (CUP) of Barbados.

It is very possible that we (the PDC plus the other relevant parties ) will get a maximum selected number of CUP candidates to run in a number of constituencies in the general election in this country.

The parties making up the CUP will at the appropriate times and places determine what the maximum selected number of CUP candidates will be and in which constituencies they will be assigned.

The PDC and the wider CUP are developing within the bounds of what is reasonably expected of our kinds of political groups in this post-independence Barbados.

Furthermore, we are not going to be running candidates for the sake of running candidates but to properly assist in the necessary and fundamental realignment of the local party culture, among other things more strategically and developmentally important to the existence and functioning of this country Barbados.

    PDC

Can’t you see you are being laughed at?
Of all the people in the world you are saying Owen is the only one to fix some economy that according to you he destroyed during his 14 years of mismanagement and selling off the family silver and engaging in financial prostitution to allow the local brass bowls to gorge themselves on imported conspicuous consumption.

Are you the same BT (Brer Twit) that was so soundly opposed to the sale of Almond to foreigners and now the government is doing just that not a word from your mouth, Mr. Fork Tongued Bushie?

Would you agree with Owen and see him as some economic Moses or saviour if he recommends the sale of the air and seaports?

You might see OSA as some economic messiah but the electorate said “NO, NO”.
What else do you have to offer other than OSA to save the economy? BBE or BUP; or is it PUP?
But being a practical man with a modicum amount of commonsense once your yellow and blue blinkers are off you might just simply go for the IMF at this stage of the game being poorly played by the local brass bowls.
Remember there is no shame in seeking help when it is needed. After all, a BBE man like you Mr. Know-it-All should know (or is it “nose”) that. Seek and Ye shall find!
