Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart
Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart – “government has renege on its election promise to preserve the jobs of public servant”

The Mahogany Coconut Group will not be drawn into senseless nit picking in relation to the possible death of the Barbados its citizens have come to know and love. We are convinced that the first order of business is a return to the polls. If we accept that there has been a betrayal because the government has renege on its election promise to preserve the jobs of public servants, the truth is that it has failed to keep the central plank of its recent elections platform. Mr. Chris Sinkler has failed as Minister of Finance and should relieve himself or be relieved of that portfolio by the Prime Minister.

The country will not recover from this crisis overnight. It is now obvious to all and sundry that the problems are structural in nature. Those who proffer that the economy can be rescued by: eliminating summer camps; discontinuing football tournaments; shutting down constituency councils; making poor black people pay for university education; reintroducing bus fares on poor black children and sending home civil servants are grossly mistaken. We assure them that these are only superficial remedies.

The real problem the country faces is an improper management of its major resource –its people –and that is at the centre of its problems. The education system drains the national budget but it has been on automatic pilot since 1962 when free education was introduced, or so it is claimed. Ever since we have been producing citizens whose prospects of employment were getting dimmer and dimmer by the decade. In the midst of a failing economy and large sums being spent on the University of the West Indies, the limited resources had to dry up. Sir Hilary Beckles had a dream to have a graduate in every household. He never bothered to ask himself, if unemployed graduates on whom, the tax payers spent millions, were going to be an asset to the country. Nobody dared to ask him graduates in what or for what. Owen Arthur dreamed of a Barbados with two or three cars in each garage. In other words it was all about show not substance.

The Barbados Labour Party and the Democratic Labour Party failed to prepare. The country had two periods (Barrow 1961-1976 and Arthur 1999- 2013) to get it right. Although there was some development, both of them fell short of crafting a real national development plan. Barbados must be prepared to fail unless new leaders spring up to dismantle the sorry collective of: journalists, so-called political analysts, and intellectual political charlatans masquerading as economists. There are some very dangerous trends raising their ugly heads. Too many personal grouses are infecting national development. For example, pollsters hastily arranging new polls that could be seen as a direct attempt to influence the outcome of national elections (Bell and Wickham). Powerful businessmen being allowed to do as they like (Parris CLICO). Vast lands owned by one man (Williams)The same way we expect politicians to be transparent and accountable; we must also pay attention to those who can influence public opinion.

We now witness the strangulation of the trade union movement. Knighthoods being prematurely given to union leaders (Trotman). It used to be that such obnoxious remnants of the colonial era were usually given at the end of careers. Now they are a dime a dozen ,and once the perception that the trade union leaders ,are in bed with the employers and the political managerial class is there, the workers will lose confidence. The current crisis has revealed the most inept and disgraceful trade union leadership in the history of post independence Barbados. We are therefore calling on the NUPW to remove both Clarke (General Secretary) and Maloney (President) from high office.

It was Sir Hilary Beckles who boasted of the Barbados Economic Model, so he ought to explain how this model, that was apparently only known to him crushed. We recall the blackbirds around the paddock feasting on the oats that were in the faeces of the horses. A man once opined that the birds were eating well because the horses’ excrement was rich in nutritional value! Barbados like all the economies in the Caribbean, with the exception of Cuba, decided that it can forever feast on the tourist dollar and was contented to ignore there were healthier ways to earn a meal.

When the late Prime Minister, David Thompson, reshuffled the cabinet, Harold Hoyte, media mogul and an established power player in Barbados, scoffed at the giving of the Ministry of Agriculture, to Dr. David Estwick. In Hoyte’s limited opinion, the agriculture ministry was not “prestigious”. If these are the type of people on whom Barbadians expect their country’s future to be secured; it is time to call the undertaker. Hoyte’s publicly expressed negative view of agriculture clearly demonstrates how he and the power players see their country.

It may well be asked why we have chosen to highlight or “call names”. We do so because we recognize that perhaps there are some new owners of the plantation, and the only difference between them and the ones before them is the color of their skins. It is time to connect the dots! This new group has no real nationalistic devotion to their country. They too, by their behind the scene maneuverings, have all contributed to the crisis of the island. We have both black (Austin) and white (Johnson) describing underpaid black Barbadian workers as lazy. They will not say that some of the most productive workers, who built the country, went from cradle to grave, dirt poor.

The truth is that a sophisticated brand of ultra yardfowlism has invaded and taken over the body politic and corporate Barbados. These deviants do not get tee shirts as, Wickham suggested, and iPods. Oh no; the real yard fowls are driving luxury cars and living in well guarded communities in million dollar mansions. For Barbados to go forward they too must be brought to account.

This crisis goes way beyond Sinkler’s incompetence and Stewart’s obstinacy. We thank Owen Arthur for publicly acknowledging that gimmickry is afoot. We have long held the view that Mia Mottley herself is nothing more than a gimmick. She never discovered black Barbadian women working in agricultural fields for inferior wages; until she found herself in opposition. Pure Gimmickry!

Barbadians deserve an election of real issues and not an extension of Crop Over as was witnessed in 2013. Barbadians should not be picking oats from the horses’ excrement in order to eat. They can thank Sir Hilary Beckles, Harold Hoyte, Sir Charles Williams, Leroy Parris, and other powerful assortment of power brokers, corporate deviants, opportunistic academics and intellectuals along with the Barbados Labour Party and Democratic Labour Party for their current unnecessary predicament.

As we close this piece we are reminded of the answer Mr. Clyde Mascoll gave to a reporter, when he changed parties and joined the Barbados Labour Party. When asked what role he would play, his reply was: “Whatever the Prime Minister(Arthur) wants me to do…… “To Arthur’s eternal credit, he did not ask Mascoll to poison the country’s water supply. When the intellectual elite can be so flippant about how they see themselves, readers would understand why names have to be called.

We maintain that this crisis cannot be looked at in isolation. The truth is that Barbados, like most islands in the Caribbean, has to be rescued from those who have hijacked it for their own purposes. They have brought it to near ruin. Time to call a spade a spade. Time for a new dispensation. Time is running out.

  4. I dont understand these people who put these posts up on BU.

We have a democracy where for right now we have two political parties. All they are trying to do is suggesting daily that we get rid of both parties, only because their beloved party, the DLP has completely messed up this country’s economy because of sheer pig headedness, arrogance and stupidity.

How the hell are we going to get rid of the current system, why?….. you would need to same MP’s to change the system. I know it galls these Dems that the party whom they love to every fault could be so bad and so they can NEVER bring themselves to say…………look for all the hatred we have for the BLP, they are a better party when in office and under their stewardship, such hopelessness never exists. The BLP do know how to manage an economy and to engender confidence in its management.

Could God, Dems, swallow your pride, call on your incompetent MP’s to resign and let the people of Barbados go back to the polls and elect a set of competent people who can turn this ship of state around……..because as sure as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west…….this buffoon who put us in this hell hole cannot get us out. He is all talk.

As Enuff said, go take your meds……..a third party will only fail in Barbados……..if a manlike Richie Haynes with all his charm and charisma could not field a full slate to contest an election and win, tell me who around can do so now. How comes people like the Mohogany group and Pachamama dont offer themselves and stop all the long talk!

  5. Prodigal son, you have obviously underestimate the collective will of the people. Because true change can only be realized, if the people demand it but until then it’s business as usual.

  8. @ David

Remind me of what Sinckler said during elections campaign about Hon. Owen and some others had a meeting and were discussing sending home public servants. Was it ever resolved that there wasn’t a meeting and the sending home of public servants would have been the order of the day once the BLP won the elections 2013?

What difference in management would occur under the BLP at this time?

The country needs foreign exchange the only person I hear asking for answers on the true generation of foreign exchange is David Ellis. We have consulates all over the world and cannot hear one word of negotiations, special meetings, secured special loans, investments, new business from our counsellors and ambassadors.

Agriculture can indeed bring in FX through exports, what is the turnover rate again? when will we realize the profits through exports? Pine Hill continues to get awards for their excellent beer and consistency in manufacturing Coca Cola but how are we benefiting from this sector? Our neighbours (Tdad) gave Pine Hill gripe with the milk and we continued to buy TT food daily both raw and cooked meals brought into our island through foreign currency.

Changing the Government will not change the challenges nor the administrative process. The system remains the same, the culture remains the same. CLICO policy holders are continuing to the High Court and the Opposition continues to be quiet on that issue. According to the MoF a paper to finalize payments to Barrack will going to Parliament in two weeks’ time or is that he has a draft proposal on his desk to look at?

I didn’t know that you need to have experience as PM in order to become a PM? That thought was dismissed in 2008 elections when the DLP won although the BLP had more former Acting PM members among them and yet alive.

Didn’t Chris say that the NEAT (NEET) programme started under the BLP?

PROBLEM–set up day for all or as many as possible to to have a peaceful protest in Trafalgar square. let the people sign some specially made books with their protest and sign off on it and present it to the government.
REASON WHY NOT– Barbadians will not gather in the hundreds of thousands just once to make this change for barbados.
strength in numbers .i can not believe the bajan people have even let this get this far.WHO WILL STEP UP TO THE BAT? if we do not do this
it will never change.only one day off work that is all it takes .
let us get 200.000.00 bajans down town and sign a general petition .
they can not have all of beat or killed .

  13. iabingy…what crapaud sh*te you talking ?

Which rock you crawl out from ?

Is there still a TRAFALGAR square in Barbados ? Do Bajans still recognise such a place ?
How are you going to get 200,000 Bajans support the NONSENSE you are spewing ?

+The BLP recently failed to get 500 people to join their crusade to denounce the DEMs policies !

The UWI students failed to get 50 people (including the 40 BLP rabble rousing MPs and members in the said crowd that day ) to join them in denouncing the DEMs tuition policies .

Bajans already understand the tough operating environment the DEMs have to function under….and are prepared to give them time to make the changes that are necessary.

According to the Market Vendor Chris Sinckler press conference performance was 100 per cent.

    Everybody….loves CHRIS.

  20. Mahogany Court Group,

Easily one of your best submissions ever.

Your group’s point is taken that the DLP and BLP failed – years ago – to prepare the country for an increasingly different and complex world ahead to the one they came and found.

However, we strongly posit that it was in the 1980s where the BLP and DLP failed tremendously to take the country to a higher level ideologically politically financially than was seen then.

They each failed massively to have a well planned altruistic coherent long range blue print for implementation for the various social political material and financial sectors of the country.

What was being seen, et al, then, in the 80s, was that though the country was moving ahead infrastructurally and technologically mainly (yet still slower than it ought to have), it did not have the necessary ideological political and financial bases upon which to sustain those types of developments properly into the 21st Century. Too, it did NOT have the correct levels and amounts of sound infrastructural and technological development to support sustainably the types of social development that these two visionless, intellectually discredited and bankrupt BLP ( some aspects of the CSME) and DLP factions (this society is more than economy foolishness) have been in their respective ways aspiring to achieve.

It is these and a whole plethora of other massive ideological social political material financial failings that the jack o lantern DLP and BLP are primarily responsible for.

That is why we argue that they should have long gone since the 80s, when it is clear that were spent forces.

Well, a generation onwards and they are still among our social political beings creating more and more havoc and mayhem in various societal spheres of the country with their very backward and inept policies.

They must be driven from the parliament of this country, before Barbados becomes like Jamaica, in so many ways – starting from the 70s up to now.

That’s unlikely to be so even though the objectives appear to be the same.

Totally different style and words. Great difference in common sense. Mark Fenty is all over the place while CCC exhibited a singular sense of purpose never deviating from spinning everything in favour of the DLP as his singular topic. CCC was not a troll in the true sense of the word.

CCC would be a genius if he could dumb himself down to pretend to be a Mark Fenty.

What we want now are prosecutions for breaching the electoral laws and prosecutions for corruption before we recycle the same old useless lot. Unfortunately, none of the players with responsibility to ensure that our laws are followed possess the required gonads to do the job.

From the tone of the utterances from the Opposition, can any of you detect a burning desire from them to return to govern this country at this time? It appears that they are saying that we don’t have the solutions either and don’t want this trouble now, let the DEMS stew in their own juices.

    I COMPLETELY CONCUR!

Plantation DEEDS also concurs that this piece by MCG is unquestionably a COMPLETE, POSITIVE & ANALYTICAL BLOVIATION of the FACTS on the ground in Barbados!

All the intellectual dishonest and the political tribal chieftains will obviously be up in arms because they see only the “SPECK” in the opposition’s eye refusing to dislodge the lamp-post in their own eye!

Blinded by party-political posturing; the polyamorous behaviour on the part of certain key politicians – and the raving polymorphous perversity of certain others! A nation grip in WINTER VORTEX of static IMMORALITY & baseless, mindless inertia – visionlessly INEPT and brazen,TERMINAL LIARS!

MCG clearly opined that not even our BELOVED DIPPER THE SKIPPER did not leave BARBADOS with a clear, concise DEVELOPMENTAL PLAN and for most DLP-ites that will be a “DAGGER” in the back – but the “TRUTH” is the SKIPPER was busy fighting off political & economic “subversives” near and ABROAD – which left him precious time to “CARVE” out a “VISION” for this great country!

The question we are face with now: “WHO HAS THE ‘balls’ TO FUND SUCH A “vision” AND BRING IT TO FRUITION?

Thank you MCG for a job well done!

  40. If going back to the polls right now means that many of our DLP members of parliament in the lower and upper houses, and those rejects who are bidding their time in the PM’s Office, will dip out on their grand pensions, having not served two full terms, then we may as well forget about a general election coming any time soon. On the government side , those who had earlier opposed to Freundal Stuart, now have no choice but to ping along with him ,grin and bear it ,and support him fully until, the pension baby is born. No abortion at this juncture, as the Big daddy ,who is an all right jack, with his own pension entitlement, has the bull pissle in hand …. Those on the opposition side need not to bother as at the next election, whenever its called, dem BLP who are in now , dem will be in again, joined by 15/16 others.

  41. Why call a general election and have the results be the same with a resounding victory for the great Democratic Labour Party. As a matter of fact, I believe the DLP would retain the government with an increase majority.
Barbadians are not stupid. The BLP is in a quandary with the infighting taken place between Owen Arthur & Mia Mottley as well as the feud between George Payne & Edmund Hinkson. Barbadians are not that stupid to put back the country into the hands of the tyrants n the discredited, corrupt Barbados Labour Party.
The country is in good hands with Freundel up front be ably assisted by Chris Sinckler, Donville Inniss & the rest of the great team of DLP ministers.
