Peter Wickham at the 'vanguard' of the Gay lobby in Barbados
Peter Wickham at the ‘vanguard’ of the Gay lobby in Barbados

BU has written and posted extensively about the issue of homosexuality. BU’s position is well documented. We do not subscribe to the lifestyle but will defend the right of the homosexual to co-exist in our society as defined by our society. It has proved and will continue to prove not a simple matter to resolve.

In the case of Barbados the homosexual debate has become interesting on a number of fronts. It is an issue which Peter Wickham has taken to wearing on his sleeve. He uses his weekly newspaper column and the talk show on Voice of Barbados radio to bombard citizens with his view. But guess what, this is his prerogative to take. Perhaps his advocacy would take on credibility if he were to declare his hand.

It is interesting to note that leading up to the last general election Ministers Adriel Brathwaite (Attorney General) and Stephen Lashley (Family and Youth) reaffirmed government’s position to support what BU describes as the traditional lifestyle of man and woman, and marriage, man and woman.  It is obvious the two ministers felt bold to make public their positions because they believe it resonates favourably with the majority of Barbadians poll or no poll. Where do we go from here if government is not inclined to endorse homosexuality as a normal way of life?

Another other issue comes from the moral relativist position where individuals leverage their right to engage in bisexual relationships. A stroll any evening through the UWI Campus, Samuel Jackman Prescod or Barbados Community College, one is confronted by many young people publicly practicing bisexual behaviour behaviour. Such a position pressures society to demarcate how we want to organize our society. Or should we go with the flow?

The final issue is the full court press by homosexuals to be allowed to participate fully in the Boy Scout movement. Sure we should not discriminate against individuals who may want to play active roles in the movement. Conversely, it is the right of the parent who feels uncomfortable sending their male offspring to a Scout gathering where homosexuals are involved to say, go to hell!

It is evident that the Christian movement in Barbadian has cowered in the face of an aggressive advocacy by the gay agenda lead by Wickham et al. If we have beliefs which are different why the hell don’t we represent those views and not go with the flow? If we believe there is no logical basis to rebut the homosexual lobby let us pack it in and move on.

Finally BU poses the question to the BU theologians – Was Jesus Christ a homosexual?

What do you think our range of options should include? Our reading of you post suggest a societal recognition of ‘varied’ lifestyles but only in circumstances where such behaviors are away from view, like a wink and nod We are subject to your correction.

  2. Why is Peter Wickham’s photo accompanying this post ?
Are you trying to outply something here ? What are the motives behind this action ? Who exactly is Peter Wickham ? Is Peter the son of John or Mary ? Is Peter, Peather ?

  3. lol. Boy de bible got a clause or piece of evidence in support of anything under de sun. How comes King James did not tell he writers to take out de parts of de bible that preach against homosexuality?

  4. David…

We don’t seem to be on the same page. You say the ‘Christian movement is cowed by the gay agenda led by Peter Wickham’. Yet a day barely passes without some kind of allegedly Christian trumpeting in the press. The Anglican Bishops have also wittered. The Pentecostals have had a full page. And you single out one man, Wickham? Gee, if one man can get such a reaction, he must be quite something. There have been a couple of priests who’ve spoken out, yes. But to say the so-called Christians are ‘cowed’ by the gay ranting of Peter W is just plain silly. Indeed, they really can’t be. They don’t listen anyway, any more than anyone listens to anyone else with a different view from them in this society.Hearing is not listening…as in the expression ‘I hear you’.

Why tis ting written so slanted David….true dat Ross…Wickham has been postered…..as to the Christianity end their position should be clear..just read Leviticus

  6. Oh sorry David…

What is it to practise bi-sexual behaviour in public?

  7. @Pacha

Our position is that the homosexual has a right to exist in the society like all others BUT at the same time there is a natural tension reflected in an existing moral code which we need to discuss/reconcile.

  8. @Oilman

Still waiting on BU theologians to debunk this man on the video.

  9. As far as I know homosexuals in Barbados have the same legal rights as normal Bajans except they are not allowed to marry or be recognized in common law unions.

Maybe the leaders in the Homosexual/lesbian/bisexual/transgendered/gay community should define what rights they want and Government could put it in a referendum and let the people of Barbados vote on it.

  10. when BU speaks of a homosexual ‘lifestyle’ it demonstrates an ignorant pandering to homophobes and religious types. One’s sexual preference has nothing to do with ‘lifestyle’ any more than, for instance, being black does. The problem in the Caribbean is too much tolerance for religion and other forms of ignorance that are ingrained in the mindset.

As a Bahamian, I am truly proud to be from the only black country on the planet that was smart enough (in 1991) to do away with backward, ignorant “buggery” laws left in place by the colonialists. Maybe one day the rest of you will catch up.

  11. @Ross

Yes we have responses from the religious people but it is fragmented and so far, in our opinion, has not matched the calculated and coherent delivery by Wickham from the pulpit of VoB or the Nation. If Barbados is truly a Christian society there should not be this kind of fragmentation in the message and vacuum caused by their(Christians) passive position.

  12. @Onions

BU offers our opinion take it or leave it. What one sided what!?!

  13. @ David
We are not so interested in homosexuality, per se, but in a bigger principle that goes beyond that. What about polygamy? When are you going to come for us? There is a tale that starts by saying something like……. they came for …………. and we said nothing. Then they (Hitler’s Germany) came for ……….. and we said nothing. Then they came for us ……. there was nobody left to object.

  14. @ bahamared

You are pontificating arrant nonsense. In the enlightened countries of the North and a flung the issue of homosexuality has these nations divided.

    That is d problem……..my way or the H-way !

  16. @Pacha

The piece is meant to bring this matter in the open. There is tension which always cloaks this issue and we need to have a conversation about it. It will not go away. PW as the ‘champion’ of this issue is trying but he lacks the communication skill to provoke dispassionate discussion. MAM tried a thing when she was AG BUT is blew up in her face. BU is assisting PW in his quest to enlighten on this issue believe it or not.

  18. @David
Well in my submission I was tying to make the point that you really can’t debunk what the man said because the bible has a little something for every body. So if the guy in the video had presented all the evidence in the bible that speaks against homosexuality without mentioning the King James issue and the evidence in support of Jesus being gay, he would also seem to be on good ground with his argument.

  19. @Oilman

The point at the crux is that if the Bible is ambivalent about homosexuality it smashes the Christian argument.

    Bahamar

The Bahamian government bow to the lobby of the USA and abandoned their buggery laws. They cannot rock the American tourism boats so something had to be done to allow the Americans to ‘bull’ whilst vacationing without fear of prosecution.

In Barbados we all recognize this homosexual thing deviant behavior and are determined to keep it unlawfully for a very long time.

  21. David

But David, you are assuming that the authentic Christian position is written in Leviticus as Old Onions (understandably) believes.

    Bahamared

Yes you are RIGHT. Bahamas abolished buggery as a criminal offence some years ago. And just as well…it is not an activity confined to homosexual behaviour. But what of Mozambique, Rwanda and South Africa?

    David (again)

The “north” is divided on gay marriage NOT the abolition of buggery as a criminal offence.
Glad you mentioned the Nazis – who sought to destroy whole peoples including gays. The world said ‘NO’.

  22. @David
You seem to be missing my point. The way biblical arguments go, the anti- homosexual christian lobby would cite the relevant anti-gay passages of scripture and argue that no matter what the guy in the video says, homosexuality is a sin against God.

  23. @Oilman

Not missing your point. If the Bible states that Jesus was a homosexual or sympathetic to the behaviour this is where it ends the argument.

  24. Discrimination should be outlawed….ppl loving one another should be allowed to love, …I’m not gay, …but I am black…and been discriminated many a time for my colour……someone’s sexuality should be no one else’s business but the parties concerned….as for gay marriage ….why not…?

  25. @David
lol show me where the bible says Jesus supported homosexuality?

  26. minus de question mark for obvious reasons

  27. As for the weak argument…God doesn’t condone gay ppl….It’s nothing to do with God…..God doesn’t tell any body who they should love….!!!…

  28. jCurious but
robert ross sounds just like PETER WICKHAM to me ,
When I was reading his comment , I thought I was hearing Peter speak, the same metre, sentence structure , word choice et al. Am I correct ?
Is Robert Ross -Peter Wickham ??

    JUST ASKING

  29. 100 reasons to be suspect of the different conflicting and contradicting verses in the bible:

    1. Shakespeare was reportedly one of the people who translated the bible, don’t know where he learned the hebrew language, but Shakespeare was reportedly a flaming homosexual and a known criminal, so go figure.

I do not take the bible seriously, people are free to pursue their preferences as long as it’s not criminal, and should not be judged, people always forget the part in the said same bible that says, judge not lest ye be judged……………………

Last convers. with Robert Ross…was informed whole heartedly of a loving wife and recent marriage….JUST ASKIN…I would hope you wrong sonny

  31. Despite de video and what in legal terms can be called circumstantial evidence, I still want David and anyone else here to show me which verse in de bible says that Jesus condoned, promoted or in anyway supported homosexuality or such acts.

  32. Oilman..since when did you have to be told who you have as your partner….Jesus didn’t tell you you could drive a car or use the Internet …maybe you should stop doing those things …until you are specifically told you can…

  33. After all cars can kill ppl and the Internet is full of sin…..lol…

  34. I rest my case.

  35. Bahamared…………..tell them that the colonialists were doing the most buggering of everyone, including slaves, out of any other group on earth. They need to be constantly reminded, short attention spans.

  36. The other issue which has been skirted in the discussion is the fact two ministers from the government stated less than 1 year ago that they support traditional marriage and family unit.

TEACH ME FRIENDS. WHERE DOES THE BIBLE TEACH THIS?
DO GIVE US THE CHAPTER AND VERSE

  38. Are people still listening to ministers, who often find themselves in the most compromising positions……….just like the colonists, introduce the bible but do the most buggering, cheating, lying, raping, killing, enslaving, plundering, pillaging……………………..

  39. @Doc GP

To give context to the question we are exploring what the gentleman is trying to prove in the video presentation.

  40. Just asking

Stop being a prat. I am not PW.

  41. Old Onions

    You remembered…and got it right.

  42. What is evident is that both political parties are scared shitless to engage on this issue.

  43. @David
I don’t think the DLP is scared to deal with this issue at all. The DLP-far right christian alliance means that the DLP has already declared itself as being opposed to same sex marriage.

The BLP on the other hand has its own issues to confront in relation to this matter. (smiles)

  44. As well they should, all their skeletons will come marching out of their closets.

  45. @Oilman

Point taken but the DLP has declared a position knowing it will NOT be challenged.

  46. @The Dummy @ Dumo

Whatever our reason for abolishing the ignorant “buggery” laws, it clearly places us in good company. When people from righteous societies stop migrating to heathen places like the USA, Europe and indeed the Bahamas, then we will take their righteousness more seriously.

For your info, we have plenty homophobes here (the legacy of the same religious nonsense brainwashed into you and others) but thankfully, we have enough enlightened folk to have tipped the scale on the important issue of discrimination.

By the way, I guess “bull” is Caribbean slang for the act of lovemaking between male homosexuals? Thankfully, the term is unknown in the Bahamas.I would suggest you drop it, as it makes you sound stupid.

  47. Are we saying that because the US and the UK and a few others have gone in a direction Barbados is not in good company? What about all the other countries which have stood firm?

  48. Jesus live in another time and era ……..the fact of the matter is that homosexuals are people and deserving of all their rights. why must jesus always have to be brought into an issue as complex and difficult as this ………Lest we forget……. Love your neighbor as your self………..Do unto others as we demand others to do unto us…………Why are people so afraid of Homoseuals……….is it a real “fear” or is it a Fear that is so psychologically embedded in ones mind that it clouds the vision of many who would rather React to the homosexual lifestyle than ACT on their call for ALL RIGHTS .overcoming such fear can be easy by looking at the Human and not the Lifestyle.

  49. BTW BLP this issue poses a very serious problem for the BLP and drags the leadership into an uncomfortable position. BLP wunna got wunna work cut out ……..

Homosexuality is not a lifestyle: it is a death-style. It might lead to some type of perverted pleasure but it cannot lead to procreation. Animals do not practice this type of behaviour. It should not be encouraged no matter how big and influential the lobby becomes.

Islandgal with her bisexual self might not like these views but they must be stated.
