Peter Wickham at the 'vanguard' of the Gay lobby in Barbados
Peter Wickham at the ‘vanguard’ of the Gay lobby in Barbados

BU has written and posted extensively about the issue of homosexuality. BUโ€™s position is well documented. We do not subscribe to the lifestyle but will defend the right of the homosexual to co-exist in our society as defined by our society. It has proved and will continue to prove not a simple matter to resolve.

In the case of Barbados the homosexual debate has become interesting on a number of fronts. It is an issue which Peter Wickham has taken to wearing on his sleeve. He uses his weekly newspaper column and the talk show on Voice of Barbados radio to bombard citizens with his view. But guess what, this is his prerogative to take. Perhaps his advocacy would take on credibility if he were to declare his hand.

It is interesting to note that leading up to the last general election Ministers Adriel Brathwaite (Attorney General) and Stephen Lashley (Family and Youth) reaffirmed governmentโ€™s position to support what BU describes as the traditional lifestyle of man and woman, and marriage, man and woman.ย  It is obvious the two ministers felt bold to make public their positions because they believe it resonates favourably with the majority of Barbadians poll or no poll. Where do we go from here if government is not inclined to endorse homosexuality as a normal way of life?

Another other issue comes from the moral relativist position where individuals leverage their right to engage in bisexual relationships. A stroll any evening through the UWI Campus, Samuel Jackman Prescod or Barbados Community College, one is confronted by many young people publicly practicing bisexual behaviour behaviour. Such a position pressures society to demarcate how we want to organize our society. Or should we go with the flow?

The final issue is the full court press by homosexuals to be allowed to participate fully in the Boy Scout movement. Sure we should not discriminate against individuals who may want to play active roles in the movement. Conversely, it is the right of the parent who feels uncomfortable sending their male offspring to a Scout gathering where homosexuals are involved to say, go to hell!

It is evident that the Christian movement in Barbadian has cowered in the face of an aggressive advocacy by the gay agenda lead by Wickham et al. If we have beliefs which are different why the hell donโ€™t we represent those views and not go with the flow? If we believe there is no logical basis to rebut the homosexual lobby let us pack it in and move on.

Finally BU poses the question to the BU theologians โ€“ Was Jesus Christ a homosexual?

What I am saying is that the countries that have “stood firm” are simply displaying their backwardness. That all enlightened countries, despite their ethnicity (Japan, New Zealand, Canada, South Korea, Scandinavia) have removed such discrimination is also not a coincidence.

You are not only in bad company, but frankly in embarrassing company. A list of the countries that criminalise homosexuality is also (without exception) a list of aid begging, backward underdeveloped morons. Of our region, only the Bahamas and Bermuda actively moved against criminalisation. Barbados, which is next in terms of income and development, should be next. For now, you are in laughably embarrassing company (Nigeria, Jamaica etc.). Time to move ahead and leave the stupidity behind.

Let me stay in my ignorance. When I was a child, my family raised animals: pigs, sheep, cows, dogs and cats, and I have never seen homosexual behaviour among them. The animals seem to know something that we don’t.

  6. Caswell……………the animals brains don’t weigh 3 pounds like ours, their thought processes are much different, not as complicated, and their brain capacity is not as expansive………….therein lies our problems, that’s we are said to be the mammals with the highest intelligence level, though sometimes i wonder if that is in our best interest.

  7. @Caswell Franklyn
I suspect that among the things they (the animals) are blissfully unaware of is this fictitious god character that has so blighted the human mind over the ages. As it is an entirely human creation, maybe that is why we are the only animals who give a damn about what others find attractive sexually. I doubt your dogs, cats, sheep or pigs ever spared a thought as to who you were having sex with.

  8. what blasphemy is this who you all call Jesus which is yahawashi was never a homo jus because he didn’t have any wife he came to fulfil the will of his father not lag an flirt around so king James cant be a man of elohim if he’s a homo he wanted recognition like his peers the holy spirit works in mysterious way which we can not comprehend if not for the inspiration of the holy spirit just look at Sodom and Gomorrah how you think that happened so shall the days of Sodom so shall it be this day nothing new under this sun

  9. Well Well

Virtually nothing is known about Shakespeare and he is not mentioned among the translators. HOWEVER Francis Bacon was a translator and some say he was a kind of editor-in-chief; some say that Bacon WAS Shakespeare; Bacon was gay

The odd thing is that in those times no-one cared very much so long as there was no open scandal. All the nonsense is post enlightenment.

For those interested in the Pentecostal position – conceived as the ‘Christian View’ of things – the piece by Roger Marshall in today’s Sun is a wonderful example of the genre.

There the fella argues that Paul’s anti-gay snippets “are the very teachings of Jesus himself”. The argument runs like this:

    1. Jesus inaugurated the New Testament epoch.
    2. Paul was New testament and had a vision of Jesus on the Antioch road.
    3. Paul was ant-gay.
    4. Therefore Jesus was anti-gay.

Good stuff. The man deserves a Doctorate in Biblical Studies.

    Three things apart from that.

    1. He ignores the inclusive nature of Jesus’ ministry – the idea of the Great Feast to which all are welcome and which Paul accepted – as well as the John texts in relation to the “disciple (John) whom he loved”. and the general refusal to condemn those guilty of immoral conduct (the woman taken in adultery and the woman who washed his feet with her hair, a woman not to be condemned because “she loved much”). Incidentally the reference in the youtube link to Leonardo where Leonardo paints the last Supper with a woman (evidence that Jesus was married) might in fact have been a blind by him, a kind of joke, – since Leonardo, like Michelangelo, was gay too.

    2. It has been suggested that Paul himself was gay. It was his ‘thorn in the flesh’. The evidence is based on the thorn texts, Paul’s self-evident misogyny and his low opinion of marriage.

    3. The assumption is that the Holy Spirit stopped speaking in, say, 50ce. If it did – well, Paul condoned slavery too and perceived women as inferior to men. For the most part we have rejected both ideas but have not thereby become unchristian. It follows that Paul cannot be considered an infallible guide 2000 years on.

I have no idea whether Jesus was gay and neither does anyone else. Actually, I don’t care. His ‘gayness’ or otherwise is irrelevant to the fragrance of his teaching which is really all that should matter for those who profess the Christian faith – which is the shift from ‘Law’ to ‘Love’, from the ‘letter’ to Spirit. Isn’t it time we caught on? Or, to put it another way, ‘If I am gay, does that mean I am not loving my neighbour as myself’?’

  10. Robert Ross…………..your reference to Shakespeare is inaccurate, there was some recent research done on Shakespeare even indicating the village he lived, which is still in existence today, he was a hoarder, a taxdodger and a few other unmentionables, do some research, it was documented and on the daily news webpage only last month,

  11. The problem with the brainwash that black people continue to embed in their own psyche is their inability to see any other reasoning, not even when presented with facts by the descendants of the designers of all the lies and myths surrounding the bible and it’s contents about who should do what, when, where, how and with whom.

  12. Homosexuality has been around since mankind was on earth. For those of you who believe in a God, didn’t God make these people as well? Since God didn’t and can’t change these people why can’t we just accept these persons as human beings? Both governments have knowingly accepted homosexual candidates and have homosexuals serve as Ministers, Senators and Diplomats so why is there so much talk. We have homosexual Priests in the churches so why is there so much talk? Stupse

  13. jeff Cumberbatch Avatar

Discrimination against black people on the basis of their skin colour is not wrong purely because one cannot help the colour he or she is born with, but also because the colour of one’s skin is wholly irrelevant in all matters. Remind me again of the circumstance outside of procreation in which one’s sexual orientation is relevant.

  14. @ David

Every time you raise this issue we have no other choice but to decide that we can’t be further divided by our enemies. We would rather join with our gay brothers and sisters to resist the ‘divide and rule’ tactics of our enemies. We remember well the trade union movement in the USA refusing to accept black workers in the fight against capitalist – they common enemy. Racism was more important to white people than all workers’ rights. We still have the residue from that schism today. And both white workers and black workers paid a heavy price. We smell a rat in this global – misdirection.

2 Cor 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
1 Peter 2:22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:

  16. @Pacha

BU remain adamant we need to reconcile this issue and move on. We have this penchant for forcing these matters in the background hoping that they disappear.

  17. Well Well

The domestic trivia relating to Shakespeare has been known for decades. That is quite different from whether he would have been known in Court circles as an educated expert and Greek scholar to be trusted with translation work. If he had been, we would have known. Bacon is a different case. But let it rest.

  18. Robert Ross…………..that is it, we never met these people, they are long dead and totally irrelevant to our current challenges and situations.

  19. @well well

You said it perfectly when you alluded to the depth of brainwashing of blacks in our region and elsewhere. Jamaicans have managed to make a mess and a wreck of their country in 50 short years, and yet find more time to express a cultural fixation with hating gays than to sort out their myriad issues. Even expressions of tolerance for gays is shouted down violently. While those who invented and propagated Christian mythology have moved on, their erstwhile slaves are transfixed. Sad indeed.

  20. David

What, precisely, are the issues we force to the background?………….

    1. Our plus or minus reactions to gayness?

    2. What the Bible says about gayness and whether, and to what extent, it counts?

    3. Whether you can be both Christian and gay?

    4. Whether Jesus was gay?

    5. Whether we should abolish s.9 of the Sexual Offences Act?

    6. Whether we should introduce gay marriage?

All of these raise different issues and, frankly, on the first, there’s little point in discussion other than to allow people to sound off. Take beloved Caswell – a highly intelligent, loyal, experienced, knowledgeable person who will carry his distaste with him to the grave. Nothing can persuade him.

And then are we speaking, or gabbling, in a kind of cauldron as sociologists, psychologists, biblical scholars, boy scouts, legislators, political hopefuls, or plain old sunday afternoon armchair commentators?

I think maybe you need to give us clear direction.

  21. @ David

Why do we? It has never been ‘reconciled’ before at any time in history. I think we should together, regardless of minor/major differences, face the bigger problems that we have. Global warming and the tipping points that are already going in the wrong direction. The collapse of capitalism and all the bigger problems we as a human race either created (hunger, etc) or exacerbated. We can’t hope to solve this before addressing the grander problems. David, do you know that there are several scientific centers looking for other ‘habitable’ planets to move to – of course the wealthy will be first in line? Should this not tell us that we have bigger problems as a species? Would you care who was gay or not if you were on the Titanic? One of our intellectual props, has recently said that we have 1000 years left, at best, before earth is uninhabitable. Others suggest far less. Would misplaced energies not be put to better use in this direction, or should we depend on the fictitious sky god to save us?

  22. Bahamared…………..Jamaicans tend to be in a class by themselves, they are so brainwashed that skin bleaching is now seen as normal.

  23. Whether we like it or not homosexuality will be with us until thine Kingdom come. Homosexuals are people with rights. As a little island why can’t we decide the path we want to take and go!

The King James Version (KJV), commonly known as the Authorized Version (AV) or King James Bible (KJB), is an English translation of the Christian Bible for the Church of England begun in 1604 and completed in 1611.[2] First printed by the King’s Printer Robert Barker,[3][4] this was the third translation into English to be approved by the English Church authorities. The first was the Great Bible commissioned in the reign of King Henry VIII, and the second was the Bishops’ Bible of 1568.[5] In January 1604, King James I of England convened the Hampton Court Conference where a new English version was conceived in response to the perceived problems of the earlier translations as detected by the Puritans,[6] a faction within the Church of England.[7]

James gave the translators instructions intended to guarantee that the new version would conform to the ecclesiology and reflect the episcopal structure of the Church of England and its belief in an ordained clergy.[8] The translation was done by 47 scholars, all of whom were members of the Church of England.[9] In common with most other translations of the period, the New Testament was translated from Greek, the Old Testament was translated from Hebrew text, while the Apocrypha were translated from the Greek and Latin. In the Book of Common Prayer (1662), the text of the Authorized Version replaced the text of the Great Bible โ€“ for Epistle and Gospel readings โ€“ and as such was authorized by Act of Parliament.[10] By the first half of the 18th century, the Authorized Version was effectively unchallenged as the English translation used in Anglican and Protestant churches. Over the course of the 18th century, the Authorized Version supplanted the Latin Vulgate as the standard version of scripture for English speaking scholars. Today, the most used edition of the King James Bible, and often identified as plainly the King James Version or King James Version, especially in the United States, remains the standard text of 1769, edited by Benjamin Blayney and Francis Sawyer Parris at Oxford.

For your information, buggery is still a crime on the law books of several US states. For your informaton as well, only last year it was found that slavery was still legal, and on the books in a Southern state. the Feds have their laws and the States have theirs. The states ususally have to vote or have a referendum on changing many of these so-called statutes.

You know I stand in awe of your shadow. But what is the ‘existing position’ we are talking about?

See the questions above on what David says we mustn’t keep shelving.

IF we are talking about gay marriage then of course it’s going nowhere, but then no-one is asking for it to go somewhere. The ex Colonial power isn’t. No gay lobby is asking for it – well, is there one? And there’s no-one in government who is the slightest bit interested. So on that score it’s all much ado about……As, years ago, with the ‘Shall we de-criminalize prostitution?’ debate when there was nothing to de-criminalize..

  35. That unlearned ignorant man in the video, spent much time on ‘the disciple’ whom Jesus loved, implying some kind of ‘sinful’ homosexual inference. Utter nonsense!

    The Disciple Whom Jesus Loved
    Scripture: John 13:21-13:28

Suggest Keywords The Disciple Whom Jesus Loved
    John 13:21-28 (Note verse 23 โ€œWhom Jesus Lovedโ€)

Intro: The Bible calls John in four places not by his name, but it calls him the disciple whom Jesus loved. In this instance we find him at the last supper sitting next to Christ leaning upon his pillow as was customary, and with his head leaned over on Jesusโ€™ breast. It would appear that as John was sitting next to Christ, he felt the need at the supper to embrace the Lord about the time that Christ was to disclose the betrayal of Judas.
The old proverb says that you are known by the company that you keep. There is no better company than him! John was not known by his ability, but he was known by who loved him- โ€œthe disciple whom Jesus loved.โ€ Before I tell you what this means, I want to tell you what it does not mean. It does not mean:

    1. Jesus loved John and not the other disciples. Jesus loves everyone. John 13:1 teaches us that he loved all those that were his until the end.

    2. Jesus loved John more than the other disciples. There is no variableness in him. There are no degrees of Godโ€™s love. When God loves, he fully loves.

The thing is that everybody does not love God the same! In fact, some hate him or the very mention of his name. Some donโ€™t really love him. Some only love him on Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Decoration Day. People who are disobedient, unconcerned, and unstudied donโ€™t really love him as they say they do! There were 15,000 on the mountain, but very few when Jesus said youโ€™ll have to deny yourself. God, church, and the Bible has to be able to fit into your schedule, but most will not serve in inconvenience. I learned from some parents who were disciples whom Jesus loved that God must be first, and everything else can be scheduled, as it is convenient.

    * It does mean that John went deeper and further in a cultivated relationship with God. He was never satisfied just to be a disciple. He wanted to lean on Jesusโ€™ breast. Iโ€™m so glad God saved me from religion, rules, regulations, reformation, and renewal of vows, promises and commitments and put me in a relationship with him. I just want to be a disciple whom Jesus loves.

    I. Sit Where Others Do Not Sit: John 13:23, one was leaning on Jesusโ€™ bosom. They were not all thereโ€ฆ only one. John is the only disciple that ever heard the Lordโ€™s heart beat! There are times when we cannot stand, but I am glad for a place to lean! This is his last night, but John is the only one who sat close by. While the others were arguing over who would be first in the kingdom, John was leaning on Jesusโ€™ breast. All they could see was themselves and one another, but all John could see was him. While Peter was making promises that he could not keep to be faithful to Christ until death, John was leaning on Jesusโ€™ breast. While Judas was counting his money, John was leaning on Jesusโ€™ bosom. While some were finding fault, John was leaning on his breast. While the others listened to themselves and one another, John was feeling the Lordโ€™s breath, listening to his heartbeat, feeling the warmth of his love. Sitting close to Jesus is not a matter of pride it is priority. It is not showmanship; it is spiritual necessity. It is like when I preach and some are blessed to death and others are bored to death! It ainโ€™t all the preacher! Some are sitting where others cannot sit! It is like Mary and Martha (Luke 10:42).

I have always wondered how Black people in Barbados can believe in and defend the Christian religion – something which was imposed on them by the English.
To hold the position that Christianity is the “one true religion” is to deny that the Hindus, Jews, Buddhists, Muslims etc., have a valid faith.
If you are a Christian it is because of an accident of birth. If you had been born to parents in India, you would almost certainly be a Hindu and have a completely different set of beliefs. You are the product of a Christian upbringing which has imposed on you just one of the world’s faiths.
To hold an anti-gay view because of verses in the Bible is to avoid thinking about the issues.
To quote Christopher Hitchens “Religion comes from the period of human prehistory where nobody – not even the mighty Democritus who concluded that all matter was made from atoms – had the smallest idea what was going on. It comes from the bawling and fearful infancy of our species, and is a babyish attempt to meet our inescapable demand for knowledge (as well as for comfort, reassurance, and other infantile needs). Today the least educated of my children knows much more about the natural order than any of the founders of religion.”

  40. Detailed historical research, conducted by historians, sociologist, anthropologists, et al, from the tiny south sea Islands, to the great Roman Empire, revealed that ALL ancient civilizations, BAR NONE, came crashing down into ruination, whenever the absolute monogamy, of One Man, One woman family unit was defiled by sexual deviancy, specifically, Homosexualism, it was only a matter of time, before they ALL came to utter ruination!

  44. @ David
    You gallows-bait!
Trust you to raise up this topic to flush out the usual suspects from hibernation… ๐Ÿ™‚

    @ Zoe
A little learning can be a dangerous thing. Homosexuality does not lead to the end of civilizations.
What happens is that the root cause of “the end of great civilizations” is ALSO the cause of various widespread spiritual aborrations including homosexuality, ….but also including other anti-social behaviors such as senseless violence, greed etc.

Those afflicted by homosexuality are generally no more at fault than those who may contract a disease such as Cancer due to the contamination of their living environment. In the same way that cancer rates have skyrocketed due to physical environmental contamination, spiritual diseases have increased due to increasing spiritual contamination and institutionalized wickedness…..killers of society.

In Bushie’s humble opinion, just as cancer victims should not seek to suggest that their unfortunate condition is normal, but that they are deserving of respect as humans, homosexuals need to accept that their condition is ABNORMAL, but that they deserve respect as human beings.

What we DO NOT NEED is to accept the suggestion that cancer is ‘normal, and to be accepted as such.
….nor do we need cancer victims to be making the environmental
rules for the cancer- free society.

Most irksome to Bushie, we do not need a moron on radio and in the anti-Bajan newspapers constantly suggesting that it is OK to be cancerous…
