President Obama in a dog fight to get reelected

And if getting turned away from the polls weren’t enough of an indignity, some of those 180 people ended up getting their cars towed from the parking lot across the street, according to a Miami Herald reporter.

Huffingtonpost

The world will again tune in to the outcome of the US Presidential Election 2012 on Tuesday. Obama intoxicated not only Americans with his message of hope in 2008 but the world.  A few short years later that message has dissipated and the latest polls show that Obama is in a statistical dead heat with Republican candidate Mitt Romney.

President Barack Obama promised the world so much. His historic elevation to the Oval Office captivated the world for those who dared to dream. His message to introduce change to Washington has failed and some suggest he did not even try. He appointed the same Wall Street faces he criticised when he was on the campaign trail in 2007. A look at his foreign policy – led by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton – paints a world still gripped in the turmoil Bush left it.

In the Caribbean many support Obama for re-election because historically Blacks have had a love affair with Democratic Party. This time around the support is stronger because the pigmentation of Obama makes him someone a predominantly Black region can identify. The questions some us who dare to ask is – Why should Americans vote for Obama? What has he done in four years to suggest as leader of the great USA he can change Washington and the world?

The performance of the US economy impacts how the global economy of which we are a part performs. In the case of Barbados there is growing pressure to defend the parity of the Barbados dollar which is hitched to the USD 2:1. BU’s interest in the US Presidential Election this week is about who at this juncture brings a policy approach that is likely to improve the global economy. So far Obama’s approach has been more of the same. Romney as a businessman appears to have achieved some success. Maybe he deserves a chance.

  1. Romney a remainder of the George Bush era too hawkish money being blown up in iraqi but for the trigger finger Romney this time Iran and big business being allowed to break the rules in the name of profitabily pushing the world in another economic madness, ROMNEY HELL NO!

  2. @ac

Do you understand that the US war industry must thrive to keep thousands of Americans employed and its economy working?

You are naive if you think other wise. The Iraq post construction period is an example. Now we have Libya? Who will be next?

  3. This election is reminiscent of Barbados. Four years later where are we? Can the incumbent(s) be held to blame? Is the alternative any better? Should we change for changing sake?

the only difference is in the charisma and popularity of the incumbent leader.Time will tell on both sides.

Correct, Obama has the option to print money which is the comfort the greenback being used as the world’s reserve currency gives him and that is all.

  5. well there were thousands of ameicans being laid off losing jobs under the era of George BUSH during the war. No David war would not bring back jobs to the millions of american whose jobs have gone to china because of cheap labour and environmental issues the military industrial complex is controlled by a few whose interest is self the jobs are far and few in between that would put a dent in the high unemployment that affects the working stiff those people who had a helping hand in building america from the ground up moreover and to add the lives lost in the never ending war which would not compensate for the few jobs gained just another story of the rich getting richer and the poor dying for a lost cause in nation building, HELL NO ROMNEY/ call me naive but i am not dumb What jobs.

  6. and by the way david all the construction in those countries the products/materials. are being made in china which gives even a better boost economically than america, What JOBS. those days are over america no longer controls the manufacturing of the world.

It never ceases to amaze me how quickly the real feelings come to the surface when, after the courting period is over and the honeymoon is done, the real emotions come to the surface.

    Obama!

As incompetent as Reagan, Bush by two, Carter Nixon et al were, they were all referred to by their pundits and detractors as President so and so but i would ask each of you to watch and see how this black President is being called Obama!

I smiled when Mitt Romney commented how “Obama” was on a campaign mission while the American Ambassador was killed in the Middle East.

I recall how President Bush, war criminal in waiting, was seated at a spelling bee when a Secret Service agent came to him and told him that the World Trade towers had been hit by aircraft. He did not move from the spelling bee, but sat there with his normal glazy eyed look while the symbol of American prosperity imploded, ostensibly due to aircraft hitting the towers, but in reality, due to the explosives in the demolition devices in the doomed towers.

No one recalls that absence while Rome fell. But they can so easily recall how the Black man Obama was, during a national election, campaigning!

History will recall how a black man, in a country where racism is alive and well, came to a White House, (assuredly one to be repainted when he leaves, tomorrow or in four years) and attempted to “change” the stranglehold that big business has on the US economy OBAMACARE et al.

When Obama first got in his administrators were entralled by the euphoria of Time for Change but the reality was/is that it met with the entrenched machinery that US business command. Losing a majority in the Senate did not help, neither did the economic meltdown, subprime mortgages, and ill advised 10 year Bush x 2 invoked wars.

Time has shown that the industrial machinery would prefer to grind itself to a halt that support any economic policies that a President of Colour would institute, especially if the possibility exists that they would work so we the “illuminati dispose that we will NOT support this presidency…selah”

For those of us, in the castle of our skins, President Obama shines and will shine for us across this world, irrespective of whether the President is returned to office or otherwise.

For many of them who voted, and do not fool yourself millions of white people voted for President Obama, 23 million black votes aint enough to get no black man in the While House, it was an experiment, they just could not believe it when he got in, it was supposed to be an “also ran”.

But watch now as the real America stands up to be counted.

You have done well President Barach Obama … long will you live in the memories of those of us that Plymouth Rock fell on”

Your four years has put 400 years of Slavery in the USA on display to the world and tomorrow will be the litmus test of whether it was just a lark or if America is tired of this sleeping legacy.

I like the thrust of your comment …

    @ david

This guy in “Notes from a Native Son” wants Barbados to break from the US and establish another standard for the measuring of our currency. You David wanted to know who would be next after Libya, well that would be Barbados … HA HA HA …!

  10. Jimmy Carter wanted to return the Panama Canal to the Panamanians by the end of the last century. He was never returned to office for a second term (was it called the October Surprise …?). Manuel Noriega wanted to follow through on Carter’s promise and now he is still in Prison, this time in his native Panama. JFK refused to move on Cuba in support of the Italian Mafia, and the Cuban immigrants, both of whom had lost a lot of interest there, and paid for it with his life. The Government of the United States of America are NOT the good guys, peoples … they never have been.

  11. @BABFP

Goven the interconnectivity of trading markets and global economies does it matter where Barbados hitches its money? All will go to hell in a hand basket anyway.

  12. The boom was in the clinton era then along came bush and dessimated the billons of dollars left in surplus in backing make believe wars in suport of nation building and Cheney and his goons meanwhile all the manufacturing jobsare going to chinawith no end in sight next comes along the icing on the cake with bank closures real estate markets on a downward spiral and the inevitable destruction of world marketswhat economic boom underthe bush administration complte disaster and would be continued by Romney

What the hell are you taking about? Is it those conspiracy theories again? Didn’t Kennedy move on Cuba with The Bay of Pigs invasion which took place a few months into his Presidency? Admitted the wheels were already in motion but he could have put the kibosh on it.

  16. Win, lose or draw tomorrow many believe President Obama is an enigma of US politics. Some suggest it will not repeat itself. A divisive US legislature in the last four years is a reality which we must confront. Was the lack of support a race issue or does the Republican side feel his policies are bad?

  17. This is exactly what I have been trying to say but this person has put it over beautifully!

    Comment author avatarZardoz8238

As a non-xtian I rather like that xtians are becoming more aligned with the extreme right, GOP & TeaBaggers.

When a religion becomes political the lines are blurred and the failings of the political party become the failings of the religion.

With the many unsavory revelations of the xtian backed romney and ryan and other GOP candidates it simply makes the xtian religion look more and more like an arm of the extremist Right.

When you have TeaBagger political crazies like Michele Bachmann, Sarah Palin, and other extremist GOPers (Akin, Santorum, Perry, etc), wrapping themselves in the American Flag all the while holding up the xtian bible and yelling “Take Back America”, it simply politicizes religion.

So too when you have preachers claiming that they speak for god and that god says to vote for romney and the GOP, it solidifies their alignment with the far right.

Is it any surprise that the ranks of Americans (especially young) that have moved away from xtianity have grown (Wiccan, etc) and Americans claiming NO religion at all has increased from 14% in the mid 90’s to just over 20% today?

As a liberal and a Humanist I tend to like it. As the xtian religion becomes more stridently Right Wing it becomes far less inclusive. It’s aliening vast numbers of Americans, both religious and non.

    It works for me.

Pres Obama should surely be respected. However, BO has stooped to the low level of corrupting Romney’s name by referring to Romnesia etc so that gives Romney the pass to retort as he sees fit. It does NOT give anyone else the right to be disrespectful!

It does NOT matter who wins the election because the Total Liabilities are at least $100TRILLION+ and so even if the US Fed Govt was shuttered entirely for 10 yrs the saving would only be $35TR. The USA is BANKRUPT, DEAD NATION walking!

I have a preference for President Obama and under differing circumstances would wish to see him return for a second term.
But President Obama will be the ultimate lame duck President.
With no majority support in both houses how can a second term president ever make any major impact unless he wages war?

I do not want President Obama to go down in history as the “coloured” president who bombed Iran along with Israel and set alight a holy war between the Jews and Christians on one side and the poor Muslim jihadists world on the other.

Would the Chinese that own America listen or pay attention to the threats from a ‘coloured’ lame ineffectual second term President?

  27. Do you know some pundits are predicting a tie in the Electoral College vote? Based on the forecast for the two Houses there is the possibility of a Romney as president and Biden as Vice :-).

  28. Obama 300+ electoral votes, Democratic Senate and Republican House.

  29. Obamaspeak……’don’t trust a man who walks like a penguin…’ Yes indeed…..brilliant analysis….sound economics….a recipe for jobs….a sound foreign policy (but lets not say anything about Benghazi)……debt reducing fiscal policy…….and the show goes on…because he happens to be black…….great stuff Rock

  30. @ Miller

And what were the major changes in the first term?

  31. Perhaps you guys need to visit this website which aggregates all the polls. http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/

Nate Silver predicted the election results in 2008 (off by one state) and 2010 when there was a Republican tidal wave. His statistical methods are highly defensible. He has a 86% chance of Obama winning .

And there are many other statisticians that have come to the same conclusions. These guys are paying much closer attention to the statistical probabilities than the media houses who have an interest in portraying the race as a dead heat.

Princeton University for example has a 98% probability of an Obama win. Not by guess work, but by aggregating hundreds of polls nationally and in the battleground states. When they aggregate say a hundred polls the margin of error is negligible. 100 polls with a 1,000 respondents each is a sample size of 100,000 which is pretty impressive and provides the basis for their probabilities.

If you really pay detailed attention to the polling, while the race may be tight, it is likely to play out differently than most people here seem to think.

But, as with all probabilities, unlikely things can still happen.

  32. BTW, Nate Silver and http://www.fivethirtyeight.com were independent put the NY Times paid him a ton of money to come under their banner after the spectacular accuracy of his predictions in 2008 and 2010.

  33. @DAvid B
“These guys are paying much closer attention to the statistical probabilities than the media houses ”

What about the intangibles that can’t be measured by statistics?

  34. @ Observing

    What intangibles?

If you mean stopping people from voting as is happening in several states, especially Florida; or that the voting machines in Ohio are owned by people connected to Tagg Romney, Mitt Romney’s son, then I see how those things cannot be measured.

In 2000 thousands of blacks were intimidated and prevented from voting especially in Palm Beach County, Florida. If they had voted, Gore would have been president instead of Bush.

In 2003, the Diebold machines were owned by republicans and contributed to Kerry’s loss. So these factors are very significant

Another factor would be the Get Out the Vote effort on both sides. In a close election, that effort makes all the difference. That why the republican controlled state governments in many of the swing states have placed so much emphasis on voter suppression among groups that traditionally vote for democrats.

  35. Actually West Palm Beach County in 2000. Police on horseback turned away many from voting. 537 votes decided Florida and the Presidency of the United States. And have not even talked about the counting fraud.

  36. Also, some of the statistical models take into consideration the possibility of inherent systematic statistical bias (not just random error) in the polls and try to place a number on it.

Nate Silver’s model deals with that explicitly: one reason he has Obama with 86% probability of winning vs others that have the number at 95% and above.

As I said before, improbable things do happen all the time. People win lotteries all the time where the odds are millions to one against them. There is a good chance (14/100) that Romney can still win. Those are not bad odds.

  37. Piece Uh De Rock, Yeah Right!!

    Great piece! My sentiments exactly

  38. @ Robert Ross
and the show goes on…because he happens to be black…….great stuff Rock
    ******************

What’s your point? People in the Caribbean have generally supported the Democrat nominee for President whether their names happen to be Jimmy Carter; Walter Mondale; Michael Dukakis; Bill Clinton; Al Gore or John Kerry all of whom happen to be “white”. If “Rock” supports Obama it doesn’t mean he agrees with everything that he has done.

Since you mentioned Benghazi let me dig up a little history, the last President whom the Republicans want to canonize – Reagan- lost 241 marines in Lebanon in 1983 after being explicitly warned by his Defence Secretary not to deploy American troops there as part of any “peacekeeping force” there. Reagan has an Airport named after him and they want to put his image up on Mount Rushmore (and he raised taxes too).

    So who are you supporting?

  39. American politics at its best!

    @davidb
I’m not an adopter of silver but believe it’s still really too close too call “conclusiveely.” Polls aside, obama should win, but as you showed in 2000, anything can happen. I think the media and pollsters will have to revisit this cycle.

Btw, which polls compensated for this systematic bias? I’ve seen and heard the over-undersampling bias arguments but now with respect to what you’re saying.

At the end of the day, turnout turnout turnout. We’ll see who does it best!

    Observing

  40. Not to belabour the point, but the latest polls show a 5.5 points shift towards Obama among independents since last week. This is an average among several national polls.

  41. @ observing

This is the best source to answer your question. Straight from the horse’s mouth.

    http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/11/03/nov-2-for-romney-to-win-state-polls-must-be-statistically-biased/

In summary, it could be polling models, not reaching a balanced sample (like people who don’t have land lines) or over-sampling one party vs. another.

If all or most of these factors lean again Romney, then his true support would be higher than the polls show.

One note, polls should be read a probabilities of a particular result; they are not about making a “conclusive” call. Nobody can do that, especially in a tight race.

  42. Sarge
Why you have to confuse peeps with the facts?

  43. Sarjeant

I couldn’t give a monkeys who Caribbean people have traditionally supported. Moreover that was not Rock’s point. Rock said he adhered to the quaint Elizabethan conception that how a man looks is how he is and proceeds to label Romney as a penguin who should not be trusted..

My point is that to use that kind of simile is entirely typical of the campaign Obama has run – vacuous and shallow; that in terms of the economy he has been a disaster; and that for nostalgia and sentiment sake to laud this opportunistic con-man, whose biggest assets are his colour, his smile and a glib use of language, is actually to debase what we all saw as the significance of his election in 2008.

The reference to Reagan is neither here nor there. I refer to the scandal of the present cover up, tongue twisting and downright lies.

Who am I supporting? I am not a clone. Romney. Why? I don’t like fellas who demonstrate affection for their wives by patting them patronizingly on their backs in the context of what is supposed to be taken as a loving hug. Nor do I like fellas who fake southern State accents when it suits them.

  44. it puzzles me how the same people who root for the democratic party wants lord nelson removed because he owned slaves when history records that the democratic party was the party of slavery in the usa with robert byrd a klu klax khan member holding high office in the democratic party up to his death.another thing is we condemn white people who oppose or don’t vote with obama as racists and castigate the blp for their purported connections with white business. so puzzling.

  45. IMHO
Obama has done more than enough to win this election based on his record of solid achievements in the first 2 years of his presidency before the Republicans took over the house and almost took over the senate.
I think Romney is a snake oil salesman who has managed to confuse many voters with lies, untruths, half-truths and prevarications. There should be no way that Romney should be running neck to neck with Obama in this election.
However I think that race and a white backlash may well cause Obama to lose. Race; because the images of the long lines of early voters could provoke a backlash today; also because Romney’s bump in the polls following the first presidential debate would have suggested to many white voters who gagged on a black man being in the white house that, despite all Romney’s moral warts, he looked presidential, and there was a possibility that they could get a white man in the white house again.
But, for Barbados and Barbadians, a Romney white house may be more beneficial to our Offshore business sector as one thing that we can be sure that Romney would do is to roll back the fight that Obama has been making to reduce the leakages of the moneys of the 1% to the offshore domiciles.
I however hope Obama wins because he eminently deserves to do so. His energetic and intelligent conduct of the job of President over the last 4 years and the campaign by the republicans to deny him a second term from day one, using every trick in the book, should speak volumes to the fair minded amongst us.

  46. national poll shows obama slowly forging ahead of Romney !

Am looking for some substance. ‘He’s been really good but of course with them and them and them……’ just sounds like a lot of copping out. But perhaps there’s no need to answer…..else this will become a local debate on here of the B’s and D’s sort….. going nowhere very much and very boring .In our case each is saying the other fella’s man is duplicitous…..so maybe the best we can do is invoke the Cretan fella who sometimes tells the truth..

Normally Bushie resonates with your well thought out positions, but are you not being a bit emotional here?

Now follow the bushman…….. because Bushie ALSO thinks that Obama deserves to win, However you seem to be suggesting that BO should win because he is a “GOOD” fellow and that the USA deserves such a president.

Bushie thinks that he deserves to win because everyone and every society always gets exactly what they deserve…..and the USA deserves BO.
…a product of Chicago, possibly the most crooked city on earth
…a sweet talking, friendly, lovable fellow, who have accelerated George Bush’s wars on anyone who fails to toe the US line.
…who have perfected the art of “Drone murder” with impunity.

BO is ideally suited to lead the USA into their demise

    LOL
Of course Romney would also do a great job of that. Indeed he is more likely to accelerate the process, but somehow Karma seems to be better served with OB in charge…. 🙂

  49. Obama’s flank is exposed on the issue of the the bebt when he promised he would decrease it coming to office.

    On 6 November 2012 10:24, Barbados Underground

  50. @ David
It is not Obama’s flank that is exposed, it is the USA’s. That very debt is their undoing. Anyone who believed that Obama could reduce the Debt in four years is of the type to be comforted by promises.

    Same here in Barbados.

Here we are spending MORE every year than we are earning, and you are telling Bushie, that because of political expediency, this will have to continue ad infinitum.
We have idiot politicians PROMISING that there will be no layoffs, no cuts to Health, Education,Transport….NUTTON!! …..AND AT THE SAME TIME, they will lower VAT.
Those promises can only be comforting to Onions and his ilk.

Lastly, you have the Governor of the Central Bank going all the way to Japan to argue that devaluation is untenable “because it is not the best solution for us”.
When did “what is best for Barbados” become a major factor in real life?

Bushie can tell you what a major factor in real life is…. “You can only spend more than you earn for a time”… After that time is up, your a$$ will be in the grass.

Will we hear ANY POLITICIAN ANYWHERE outlining a comprehensive plan to MODIFY our lifestyles so that we can live within our means? ….OF COURSE NOT.

…we prefer to be comforted by promises and let our children deal with the grass…..except that WE are now those “children” who must pay the piper…..
