Pat Hoyos

Many have been asking what is it Pat Hoyos said on last Sundayโ€™s Brasstacks which caused Minister Denis Kellman to exact an immediate apology. Here is what BU can confirm.

Last Sunday during the airing of the Brass tacks programme, listeners heard Pat Hoyos [moderator] make an apology to Minister Denis Kellman and many wondered what it was that Mr Hoyos had said that caused him to make the apology. It has now been found out. During a break, and unknown to Hoyos and the others appearing on the programme, one of whom was Mr Clyde Mascoll [Barbados Labour Party chief spokesman on economic matters], that the line was still open to Mr Kellman, Hoyos remarked in relation to the Minister Kellman “I give he five minutes and he talking bare shite “. Kellman insisted on an immediate apology before continuing his contribution. The apology immediately came from Hoyos.

Certainly VOB cannot allow this man Hoyos to continue to disrespect persons who do not share his views .

What is his agenda ?

  1. Was he talking shite or not? lmao

  2. All Ican say is “as a man thinketh so he is.”

  3. i believe that in the circumstances gleaned by BU that Mr hoyos apologised to Mr Kellman to let the matter rest because it seemed to be an aside not intended for Mr Kellman’s ears; but it is true that people who ought to know better have been humoring Mr kellman for a long time perhaps out of fear; empathy or respect for his position as a long standing parliamentarian with this kellmanomics nonsense he has been espousing both in the print media and the air. i cannot understand how Mr Kellman’s ranting and raving views can be taken seriously. No wonder Mr thompson kept him on the backbench.

  4. @balance

Live and let live that is the Bajan’s mantra.

The point is the remark was heard and gives insight into Hoyos’ thinking.

If this were a Shakespeare class and his utterence were taken as a soliloquy it would provide terrific insight.

    Now we have it.

    Not at all surprised !
Sanka Price, Kaymar Jordan, Pat Hoyos and the rest of the BLP crew at the Nation speak diparagingly about the DLP everyday. Some employees at the Nation can ATTEST to this.
Then they come out to the public and try to appear to be fair and balanced.Bunch of frauds.

What was most amazing about the Programme on Sunday was the love fest between Hoyos, Ryan Straughn and Clyde Mascoll.
The most common line by Hoyos was “What you are saying then Clyde is…………..” and he then proceeds to repeat and agree with the dribble Mascoll puts out.
The least VOB could do is to get a real moderator who would challenge those in the studio.

    LOL LOL….Pat Hoyos…I luv that ONE..He talkin bare SHITE…LOL LOl..Onons in stitches !
Also while we on it …they got nuff more that call in daily and do the same. What some of them defending like Ms.Doyle from Husbands sounds oh too pathetic.Only yesterday when asked by David Ellis what the DLP has to show for its 4 year stint, she hesitated…then proceeded with free bus fares, summer camps and those awful Coverley houses which no lower incomer can afford ($347,000) or think as value for money.Pat you know what..Ya Right !

  8. Here is a recommendation for VOB.

If the DLP does not accept the invitation to the show to battle with Mascoll and co and minimum the moderator should be the one to strike a balance.

Invite a lecturer or economist from in or outside the market to give a different commentary.

It is obvious Ryan Straughn is a little too ‘familiar’ and Hoyos colours are apparent.

The VOB needs to consider its reputation, the program on Sunday was a farce.

  9. Are we really surprise at the comment? Ablind man in a dark room looking for a black cat can see what is Mr. Hoyos agenda.Read the NATION and listen VOB!
The apology was PATRONIZING! Why apologize since thats how you feel just because you didn’t mean it for Mr Kellman ears? Pathetic! It makes a mockery of the word APOLOGY Mr. Hoyos.

VOB should have expected this- Pat Hoyos has been the most consistent critic of the current government. In the last 4 articles he has focused his vitriol on the late PM Thompson, the current PM Stuart, Dennis Kellman and Min. Of Finance Chris Sinckler.
Everyone with a brain who reads his column can tell which party he supports and on the same day that he is cussing the government in the Sunday Sun, the smart asses at VOB bring Hoyos to “moderate” a political / economic discussion.
What the hell was VOB thinking ?
That Hoyos would have a 11am – 1pm Sunday conversion. Please ! VOB, ya start wrong, ya will end wrong!
Get a new moderator! HOYOS must Go!

  11. @ NationBLPnewspaper

Did you ask for the removal of Wickham, Marshall, Husbands, McClean and company? What party they supported/support? Stupse

  12. He deserved an apology and he got it, having said that David Thompson recognized the man for what he is and gave him short thrift. Both parties are filled with useful idiots but I am not disclosing anything we didnโ€™t already know, however that is the nature of politics.

  13. @enuff

As usual you are trying to blur the issue.

Deal with the fact Hoyos made an uncalled for remark in the presence of Mascoll and Straughn.

    This was disrespectful.

  14. Its time these people with political agenda respect the fact that each person is entitled to their opinion;its a demoracy we have here in BIM the last time I checked and they need to GROW UP and let us go forward as a mature Society.I am fedup of reading a BIASED newspaper with articles that are not considering or presenting all sides;and just as fedup with listening to BIASED talk shows of the same. Where is the old time “Debate”?
Present both sides for and against and let the public decide.
IS that too much to ask from the political parties??
Stop the mudslinging ;deceitfulness ;planting people in critical places with political agenda and STICK TO THE MOOT.We young people fedup!!

” … Get a new moderator! HOYOS must Go!

Bring back Tony Marshall! All those for an unbiased moderator, say Tony the phony Marshall for VOB with Matthew Farley the producer.

  16. It is very humorous listening to the level of discussion on Brasstacts on any given week. These rantings and ravings coming from seemingly intelligent people, leave a lot to be desired. I listen to these people on the internet and I wonder if Barbados is still one of the best places to be educated.

  17. @ David
And you have exacerbated the disrespect by revealing to all and sundry what was said to Minister Kellman.

  18. NationBLPnewspaper Avatar
    NationBLPnewspaper

Pat Hoyos has been exposed and his partisan nakedness revealed for all Barbados to see.

What is most revealing is that he was cussing the DLP representative in the presence of the BLP representative. It is obvious to everyone that the BLP had more than one representative on that Sunday programme.
Pat Hoyos is the biggest fraud in Barbados.

  19. I wonder if Kellman ever records himself and listen back to the nonsense he talks. That programme on Sunday was a waste of time, Hoyos is a poor moderator who pretends to be informed but really is not, what is his obsession with going to Tony Best every time he moderates the programme. He continually interrupts the callers and guest with nonsensical statements. Really he should have admitted that both he and Kellman talk s….VOB spare us, dismiss Hoyos.

    And this has significance because???

  21. isn’t there to be a phase2 on the continuing debate on Sunday?

  22. @ NationBLPnewspaper
He has been “exposed” like Farley who expressed an interest in contesting the St.John by election on a DLP ticket, Maxine McClean who is now a Senator as is Harry Husbands; and the recently fired Chairman of the NIS.
Where the calls for firings at CBC that is public-owned?

I have always interpreted the use of the word ‘Kellmanomics’ by others as a way of subtly saying ‘he talking shite’.

  23. @eniff

The issue here is bigger than Hoyos disrespecting Kellman and you know it.

Another hypocrisy by Hoyos is when he refused to discuss the Mac Fingall ragga ragga article he wrote when the Skeete’s Bay Whitehave matter was topical with a caller who wanted to challenge. He refused. He had no problem discussing his Clico article on Sunday.

The issue is that he has a right to be inconsistent if he wants but expect to be criticized when he does.

  24. VOB needs to conduct a poll or actually I think the NATION seeks weekly to sell more papers by posting the results of polls ;so get them to poll listeners to any program conducted by Mr.Hoyos. The results would be telling. I really think its time that WILLIAMS Company who sponsors Sunday Brasstacks should hold their feet to the fire to make sure they are getting their moneys worth!

  25. @ ENUFF
You really need to growup too! Even children would bring a more reasonable point as an argument than that posted @8:16pm.When will you guys realize that this is not the 19th Century and the voting public are much more educated and advance than this constant immature tripe you keep serving up? And the language “cursing” thats for lack of the word that expresses what you want to say! Free education has produced a more knowledgeable electorate who can read and write for themselves!!
Thats for “Enuff, Mr. Hoyos, MR. Mascoll, The NATION ,DLP and BLP and PEP!!!!!!!!!

BUT Kellman when we go get some fishes coming out D agreement you were paid 3 yrs on… to negotiate and Bobby had to rush in to save face ?
You now on Manufacturing …I guess we can expect the same right ?

  27. Does all of this mean that we shall now start respecting each other more on BU?

  28. Apology or not Denis Kellman does talk bare shite. Before he had a cabinet position he was objective but now all he uses to complain about is good now.

    Rational and Real

I would also suggest that those with concerns re the style of Pat Hoyos also make those concerns known to the Market Vendor at vfernandes@starcomnetwork.net as he is best able to address the matter of his continued service with Brass Tacks and The Nation and The Business Authority

  30. Oh Come on! Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill!

The Moderator and Discussants were in an off-Air break.
They thought the mike was off, Just like in the current Obama case.
It was on, but not live for the public to hear.
Pat Hoyos made an off-the-cuff statement about Kellman’s discourse that is no different to what many people, DLP and BLP, are wont to make in private during or after any Kellman intervention.
No one outside the VOB studios heard the statement.
Pat Hoyos apologized when they went back on the Air. (Did the Station also apologize? as a portion of the blame for the incident is rightfully theirs)

Now tell me how this is so different from the things that are said about David Thompson, Owen Arthur, Mia Mottley, Freundel Stuart, Hammi-La, etc. etc. in relative privacy in rumshops and under trees all the time. Does the balance of the evidence of people’s views of Mr. Kellman’s comments suggest that the purported comment of the moderator contained some element of truthful analysis?

I wonder who David got the information from about the statement and whose interests this exposure serves. I don’t think this is a matter for the righteous indignation that some are showing. I suspect that several of the people who are protesting has said similar things about Mr. Kellman in private (relative of course).

This is one matter that should have been allowed to stay where it was since none of the VOB listeners heard the comment. But then I suppose its good for the blog. But imho, it’s still a storm in a teacup perched on a mountain that was once a molehill.

  31. old onion bags wrote “We all know Pat is a gentleman and did not know that the mic was onโ€ฆ.Pat you forgivenโ€ฆyou handled it well.”

Don’t include me in your “we all “. My opinion of Hoyos has not changed since we were at Kolij.

  32. What’s all the fuss.A poor rakie parliamentarian is told the truth sotto voce and the speaker has ruled.Say sorry and move on man! Hoyos apologized. We all heard that Kelly was out of his depth. Dennis Johnson and Pat Hoyos are both consistent in their moderating.

  33. @checkitout
Are we to understand that you believe its acceptable to sweep the “molehill รผnder the carpet in stead of levelling it and sweeping the stuff out the door?

Here is a man who has never been a success at anything. A man who likes the sound of his own voice, who makes absolutely no sense at all in anything that he says talking foolishness as usual.

Only Barbados Labour Party supporters would consider anything pat has to as interesting.

I hope that Kellie and other Parliamentarian understand that Bajans say the same about them all the time.

    All, all the time.

That is when we are not saying politicians are talking bare c#%^

    The infamous “C” word.

  39. Pringles; I believe this matter is a trivial one possibly designed to get at Pat Hoyos. I suspect that in radio studios when the mike is off people say all sorts of things that they and the stations would be very embarrassed by, or even be sued for, if what is said in such unguarded moments became public. This matter does not rise to the level of Obama making the kind of gaffe that is now being reported although there are some parallels in the two cases. It is really stretching it to try to tar and feather Pat Hoyos for saying what he did in what was essentially a temporary private discussion that did not make it to be broadcasted to the nation.

If some want to get at Pat Hoyos for his championing of seeming BLP causes and spin his contributions as mediocre and trivial, by all means do so. If some want to decry his alleged poor rakey understanding of finance matters, do so. BU is a good battleground for such matters. But don’t try to get at him for saying something that I suspect many in Barbados would agree with and would themselves have little hesitation in making similar statements in private, or indeed, in public.

So yes. I think that the matter need not have been brought into the public domain. There were only miniscule motes of the remains of a molehill there that could not be seen with the naked eye if they were swept under the carpet. Instead the matter was spun from the beginning into a conflict between a BLP sympathizing patrician and a poor DLP parliamentarian irrespective of whether or not the Moderator’s comment had some validity.

Kellman is a good parliamentarian who has contributed significantly to his party and his country over many years but he does go overboard sometimes in the detailing in his calls to the call-in programmes. I did’nt hear his contribution to last sunday’s programme but, having heard a number of his intercessions previously, It is quite possible that the Moderator was apt in his alleged description of the level of that contribution.

Pat Hoyos was not sorry for his blatant unfairness and unprofessionalism , he was sorrythat he got caught.
@Richard King- you are only right about one thing – Pat Hoyos is Consistent, consistently POOR as a moderator.
    Hoyos must go!

  41. I blame VOB the same way they carried David Ellis relaying an email where a former MP got a hissy fit and won a cool sixty-grand, the Engineers or Producers should know better – when a Guest or Caller is on hold then they are on hold. Hoyos did not know he was on same link as Kellman… Kellman is a man who wants to secede St Lucy and build an airport there, you ever hear him on the platform when he uses sound effects while giving a talk? No wonder Pat said he talkin’ bare…

  42. i does really have to laugh.

let me say, Pat did not say anything that most people would not have been thinking. i ask myself why did Mr. Kellyman come on the programme?

now keep in mind Mr. Kellyman came on the programme at 12.24 PM because there was no one there from the DLP he was allowed 5 mins to make and introduction. Mr. Kellyman draw reference to things that was said in the 11.00 am to 12.00 pm hour and you guys when so far as to find out what was said and post it? is that so pressing?

i have read stories written by a Pat Hoyos, tearing wholes in Owen Arthur and the BLP. was he a DLP member then? you people need to wake up and the hot smelly stuff you are pushing. just before the last election this blog had what one could call allow of PRO – DLP stories. today we see allow if what could be called PRO – BLP stories. so who are you guys really supporting? did you have to be supporting anyone to say how you feel? oh wait, in Barbados you have to be. give me a break.

where are the comments about the fact that this was the 3rd show on a Sunday that i heard and persons from the DLP did not turn up or call in on the phone? is this not the high of arrogance by the government? where is the blog entree on that?

i’m not the biggest fan of Mr. Mascoll but he made a very good point which was, he comes to the programme with his “facts” (we could debate that) Pat Hoyos and Ryan Straughn agree, who is there to counter it? if the moderator and the other guess agree, can you blame them?

Mr. Kellyman made no sense in nothing he said to me. what was said was done off the air, if Mr. Kellyman wanted him to apologize, that should of done off air as well but Mr. Kellyman wanted to grand stand and that is why he behave the way he did. Pat did not give him the chance to and give him what he wanted and even then Mr. Kellyman keep going.

you want to talk about disrespectful David? what about the disrespect the DLP government showing me as a Barbadian taxes payer by not coming and debating the topic of the programme?

i wonder if you would call Mr. Babb a BLP support to cause i love the fact that he publicly gave the DLP a week’s notice to come back to the show on Sunday to discuss the topic.

i wonder what will happen on Sunday?

that sounds just like Mr. Kellyman to me.

What will they think of next ?

While on the matter of Hoyos It is with interest I will wait to see if a business that he is involved in comes forward a resume paying their debts to the VAT office, as he stopped settling VAT payments due to the VAT office since June 2009 until now , a disgrace indeed as well as an outstanding case brought against this same Pat Hoyos for defamation by the de facto representative for the constituency of St Andrew Senator Irene Sandiford – Garner.
No wonder he is such an awful bitter animal.

  45. It is amazing how positions are shaping opinion on this matter.

It really does not matter what Pat Hoyos said in the studio off-mike.

What matters is that he made the statement and had to apologize.

That is information which is worthy and the public can make a judgement.

When it happened on Sunday BU readers can check to see a comment was posted by David [BU] asking what was the apology about, now we know.

Let the public know, no under the carpet.

  46. I was listening to the programme and was surprised when Pat apologised since nothing was aired. I agree with Ckeckit-out with the hyped behaviour by certain bloggers including my friend David who is of the opinion that Pat was hypocritical based on the Clico and Skeete Bay issues. It is easier to deal with the Clico issue since it dealt with miscarriage of funds belonging to the average bajan. The Skeete’s Bay issue still have questionable issues regarding if the area was sold, leased or lend to an investor. Probably, that might be the reason why an investor could be negotiating to make fundamental changes on crown land. Maybe, I should get a plan drawn out to build a house on my neighbour’s land. This is the same politician who agrees to take our retirement monies and give to an overseas entity with nuff talk and empty pockets stating that the returns will be the employment of 500 workers who will be paying in NIS monies. Again, that is bare excrement.

  47. @Tell me Why

Again your convenient logic is exposed.

Hoyos refused to discuss his article [Skeete’s Bay and Mac Fingall] with callers that day, his comment was to the effect – he wrote it, it is there for all to read and he has nothing to discuss about it.

Contrasts that position with his willingness to discuss his Sunday article.

The issue here is not the subject matter, it is the principle which says if a caller wants to discuss an article he published under his name he should have no problem doing so.

It is a hypocritical position and one open to question by a discerning public.

In the same way checkit-out et are entitled to their opinion, BU is on the side of letting the public judge for itself.

  48. David wrote: “Let the public know, no under the carpet.”

what about that Pat Hoyos, Dennis Kellyman issue was for the public to know? how important of an issue is it, when you look at the fact that person are finding it harder and harder to make a dollar in this country? should the public not know what is the state of affairs in the country? where was the DLP in that debate? how come that is not an issue for your if you say “Let the public know, no under the carpet.”

David it is clear you have a chip on you shoulder for Pat Hoyos, do your thing bro. can’t blame you right, everybody got them own game plan.

look at where this discussion has gone, What will they think of next ? comes and say on a public forum that man own some kind of VAT? this is the Barbados you’ll want? is that something that one needs to “Let the public know, no under the carpet.”?

  49. @David (not BU)

No chip at all, if it was Ellis or some other moderator the interest would have been the same. Think about it.

The issue here is a moderator making a disparaging comment in the presence of a BLP representative. It shows terrific insight doesn’t it? While Hoyos is entitled to his view and VOB made a booboo, the public is entitled to make a judgement on the matter. When President Bush.Obama made their slip ups they had to deal with it.
