The following was submitted by a concerned Barbadian who prefers to remain anonymous โ€“ Barbados Underground

It really is about time that every effort is made to bring some sanity back into the operations of the Nation Newspaper and deflect it from the path it has embarked upon. In its present state the newspaper is no more than a scandal sheet whose main agenda seems to be doing no more than creating sensation, much of which is anti government, and in the process breaking all the rules of propriety.

Some time recently one of the lawyers for Mr Leroy Parris of CLICO upon whom they have been waging a personal vendetta, went on national television to complain about two articles which the newspaper published . The first suggested that his client had gone ” MISSING ” in an effort to avoid being served process by a Marshall of the Supreme Court; the second “SERVED” referred to the first article and suggested that his client had gone overseas and also imputed that this was in his attempt to avoid being brought before the court on a CRIMINAL charge. Mr Parris’ lawyer made it very clear that he was informed that the CHIEF MARSHALL had no record of any failure by any Marshall to serve Mr Parris. In addition, the marshal for the area had confirmed that he had neither tried nor failed to execute service on Mr Parris. He also informed that his client had refuted any claim that he had left the island; in fact he had not left the island for months .

The newspaper went another step further on the road to establishing its status as a rag through its front page story in the Monday 19 March edition. The bold headline jumped out at you ” NOT WRONG ” and the byline continued “PSV head : Drivers not to blame in two accidents”. It went on to inform: “Executive member of APTO’s interim committee, Morris Lee said the association had conducted its own investigations. The circumstances relating to the accidents indicate they were not acts of carelessness. One was the fault of a slick from a nearby oilfield, and the other occurred when a car tried to overtake the ZR and struck it. As such , our investigations have revealed there is no liability in those matters which can be attributed to those drivers ,” Lee said. My immediate reaction to this story was the exclamation of incredulity…”

WHAT!ย  this is a serious contempt ”; investigations in this country, as far as I am aware are conducted BY THE POLICE; innocence or guilt is proclaimed BY THE COURT. But the matters have already been decided BY THE NATION NEWSPAPER. How can justice in these circumstances be achieved? This is a small jurisdiction where everyone is already affected by prejudice of some form and the Newspaper is amplifying it a thousand fold. Certainly it is about time that the public impose the greatest possible censure on the Nation for its continuous irresponsible conduct.

Is there no public agency to which this matter may be ventilated so that some sanity can be restored to the operations of that medium of information? Will somebody please help us ?

Pat Hoyos is the brother of BLP financier Tony Hoyos who is the companion of BLP senator Santia Bradshaw who is the daughter of former BLP parliamentarian Delisle Bradshaw.
Pat Hoyos obviously has a BLP agenda!

    Dear SirMadam
You want them to be called copy- cats.. how….just so ? Can you criticize or castigate a party ..undeservingly ..just to satisfy….a minority of nincompoops like you ?
THIS IS NOT CBC or THE ADVOCATE..they not under the influence…
I guess CLICO means nothing to you.

  3. @nation critic,
“As I said earlier, Harold Hoyte called a spade a spade because he was not intimidated like others, he was denigrated as a โ€œnegrocratโ€.
    Harold Hoyte attacked both sides”………………………….

And you really say this with a straight face? Harold Hoyte is a big time Dem. The editors at the Nation had to tow the line while he was there. He criticised the BLP so much that he got under Owen’s skin that he unadvisedly called him a “negrocrat” as you said above. That was wrong of the PM. Harold Hoyte used the Nation to help Thompson get the leadership of the DLP away from Clyde Mascoll and then to win the election. What are you smoking?

As his reward, he now sits on the esteemed CBB board. Stop whining and got a life! The DLP is like a person who has squandered his inheritance and now has to resort to begging on the street corners. You have mismanaged the economy and everybody is sucking salts as a result. Instead of taking responsibility for your incompetence, you are now blaming everybody and the Nation is your whipping boy.

Worthy to add….they have as much chance as a snowball in hell come ELECTIONS..due to all these shit-ups.

It is precisely the kind of partisan reasoning from the above that are dividing this country solely along political lines. Persons who can only see to the next election and are willing to accept anything or everything once it suits their narrow partisan interests.
The fact that a Nation boycott of DLP affiliated columnists is welcomed clearly shows people who celebrate party first and country second.

What is the mighty, fearless Nation afraid of? If they offer alternative perspectives, surely educated Barbadians (B or D) can make up their own minds.
Why refuse to engage anyone associated with the DLP?Surely, they must know that no one political side in Barbados has monopoly on ideas ?
If the Nation cares about Barbados, they would entertain a different point of view from time to time.
To put forward Albert Brandford and Pat Hoyos and call them “independent” journalists is really outside the boundaries of truthfulness.
The Nation is about as fair and balanced as former Senator Linton is on the call in programmes.

“It is precisely the kind of partisan reasoning from the above that are dividing this country solely along political lines.”

So which Party Leader, for partisan political purposes, coined the biblical phrase “DIVIDING UP THE FATTED CALF”?

PS: Both the Nation newspaper and Ex-Senator Linton are as fair and balanced as the “ac” type blogger who calls in everyday on VOB Brasstacks to propagandize the DLP agenda of lies and deceit.

  8. Man Miller…you sandpaper a certain man in the Deloitte posting…and like he loss he books or spectacles and all that’s and now can’t find he pen….. He also says Onions deserving and nearly get kill in the D cross-fire…Miller chk D article nah …and hold ya man.

  9. @National it is called brainwashing and it works very well even on those who might be fair and balanced .a daily dose of perception balanced with a heavy dose of propaganda enough of which would make anyone dellusional

  10. The more I read this blog, the clearer it becomes that those spouting governance, transparency and accountability only do so because it sounds good.

The Nation newspaper is a private company and has a right to push the agenda of whichever party they choose. In countries whose governance framework we wish to emulate, newspapers endorse Presidential candidates and political parties too, and politicians having columns in newspapers is the norm.
I see nothing wrong with Clyde Mascoll having a column given that he makes it clear he is a spokesman of the BLP, the problem is the plethora of Maxine McCleans, Harry Husbands, Rev,Prophet, Apostle Lucille Baird and Matthew Farleys pretending to be apolitical–declare wunna hand it is healthy for good governance. Wait anyone remember the column by the current Senator Sandiford-Garner?

  11. NationBLPnewspaper Avatar

The so called independent is worthy of examination because someone says there are independent but their actions, articles and pronouncements can be clearly seen to be onsided:
eg: Albert Brandford, Pat, Hoyos, Sanka Price, Peter Boos,- all regular contributors to the Nation but as coincidence would have it these “independents” always seem unable(some would sayunwilling) to be in any way critical of the current BLP opposition leader.
Surely, if you are an independent you can never reserve all of your criticism for one group and all of your praise for another.
Maybe it is just coincidence or maybe Brandford, Hoyos, Sanka Price and Peter Boos are rank BLP supporters masquerading as independent commentators by name only.

“The Nation newspaper is a private company and has a right to push the agenda of whichever party they choose:”
Certainly, if that is the case, the editors can come out openly and say that.
The DECEIT of the Nation newspaper is in pretending to be fair and balanced, portraying your actions as “informing the public”, using political operatives as “independent” columnists, coordinating your stories with the BLP campaign managers, etc.
The NATIOn should be bold enough like the papers in the US that you mentioned and publicly endorse their political party.
Instead they continue to try to mislead people by suggesting that they are only reporting the news when the evidence is clear that they are reporting a lot of BLP “opinions”.
These cowards like Sanka Price should come out from the comfort of the editor’s desks and take their place on the political platform and declare their hand and let the chips and advertisers fall where they may.

  14. @NationBLPnewspaper
What Rosemary, Pearson et al saying or the man at the Advocate? What Husbands, Marshall or Maxine McClean said? Do so doan like so!! sob sob sob…….I think the ‘balanced’ slogan is that of the DLP machinery in the Pine by the way. Hypocrite. Good jeezus you have CBC and the Advocate and want the Nation too?

    Hi, NationBLPnewspaper,
Does the second quote sound or look familiar to you?
When the newspaper that uses the second quotation as its Editorial Banner see it fit to initiate wider reporting and commentary on the CLICO issue we would be much more willing to take on board any criticism or advice implied in your first statement quoted above.
Or donโ€™t you see the CLICO matter as worthy of public debate even if it affects thousands of our fellow Caricom citizens?

  16. NationBLPnewspaper Avatar
    NationBLPnewspaper

The Nation is even spinning the CLICO issue – check the articles from Pat Hoyos – he is coming across more like Beresford Leon Padmore than a business journalist. The Nation invested in the EFPAS and have clearly taken a particular line in their “reporting”. The standards have fallen badly over there and the only defence they have is “CBC and The Advocate do it too.”
At least the Advocate still has BLP supporter Joey Harper on board but the Nation retains its total boycott of any columnist with ties to the DLP.
Kaymar Jordan and Sanka toeing the Roebuck Street line. If this is the behaviour in opposition, who will be the watchdog if the electoral map shifts. The Nation has lowered Barbados’ journalism standards and our country is not the better for it.

  17. @miller

Well for one the ADvocate is not going to follow the lead of the Nation ! and for what right now the NATION is the news and not for its ‘Good reporting” but because of it’s poor judgement and lack of integrity in presenting the news. Even the CLICO articles that you so wallowed up smacks of yellow journalism and a headline thats screams :” Hidden political agenda

  18. NationBLPnewspaper: I was ignoring your vicious attack on the journalistic prowness of the Nation which is lacking in The Advocate and CBC News. Let’s get serious, we are looking at Proactive Journalism by the Nation and Reactive Journalism by The other two medias. The blogs are leading in the dissemination of news with The Nation and Barbados Today in that order. But what we are fed nightly by CBC wikth PR News on behalf of the Government. Lets be fair. Are you happy regarding stories relating to Clico? Are you hearing our seeing reports from the opposition on our TV station? Don’t you realise Government departments and associates are directing a higher percentage of ads to the Advocate? So stop the Nation bashing and wipe the web from your eyes and most of all be fair with your comments.

I have already told you NOT to believe things you see and read in newspapers. By all means read them but let your god-given commonsense and learning that you claimed EWB gave you to inform you understanding and to guide you in arriving at a position on any matter in the public forum.
If you are so easily influenced by what is written in the Nation it can only reflect on you and would present you as a very gullible person easily manipulated and led astray.
Now please donโ€™t come with the response that the Nation propaganda as perceived by you canโ€™t influence you but can โ€˜corruptโ€™ the minds of others. Are you saying that the โ€œothersโ€ canโ€™t think for themselves? That you are above or better than them?
Didnโ€™t the majority of the voters, in your opinion, exercise sound judgment in January 2008? Why not let them make a similar judgment call as they see fit?

  20. @ ac
And if the Nation were not in the business of yellow journalism when the cheque was displayed at Haggatt Hall they would have asked probing questions. Like..Is this unusual? Who else received cheques?
By so doing, the recent unearthing of cheques written to the chief instigator of $75kChequeGate would not have been so devastating.

  21. @miller!

you can pontificate all you want that does not change the Headline Story ! of YELLOW JOURNALISM practiced and fed to the public by the NATION alias “dirty RAG”More on this LATER first an adverstisement! do let the green grass FOOl YOU!

  22. @ enuff

But there was PROOF of a cheque and the not so nice revelations which are yet to be denied by the chief THIEF and ring neck leader OAS! who is much alive and seeking a second chance to get his hand on the public coffers once again. The very least is that with all the trumped up charges against DT he is not seeking nor can DT ever seek any office again Unlike OAS who has no shame and still alive!

  23. @ The Nation Crotoc,

“The Nation is about as fair and balanced as former Senator Linton is on the call in programmes”.

In the Sunday Sun there is Peter Wickham and Peter Laurie both Dems. In the Friday paper there is Low Down. So you cannot continue to generalise and say that there are no DLP columnists.

VOB was infiltrated with known DLP operatives who pretended to be moderators like Maxine Mcclean (I dont support any party but was the first in line for a ministerial pick and admitted to be an author of the manifesto), Peter Wickham, Harry Husbands, Vere Brathwaite, Matthew Farley, Tony Marshall. This was the Dems modus operandi… get their people in the radio stations to control the agenda and David Ellis pretended that he did not know that these people were Dems. Market Vendor criticised the BLP everyday but when the Dems won… all he was talking about is DT. Since DT dead, he does not comment any anything political only stupid internet jokes. Mr Nation critic, what you have to say to this?

Come to think of it, are you the same guy who calls into Brasstacks and attacks the moderators if they ever dare carry anything about the BLP as the first news item? One day this caller called to complain to David Ellis that the BLP had a meeting in St Peter, Owen’s voice was carried but only a report from the PM in St Michael West. David explained that they knew of the BLP meeting long in advance but only knew of the DLP meeting the same day. The man would not accept that, they should have gotten someone there. Cant please a DEM!

  24. A dead thief is no less a thief than a live one…but what is worse is when you pretend to be virtuous and are found wanting.
OSA did admit he got the cheque, however folks like yourself continue to behave as though the forensic audit is a figment of our imagination and the cheques written to David Thompson and the $3.333m to David Thomspon & Associates then paid to a Parris are therefore fictional too.
But waaaaaaaaaait you want to convince BU that the current DLP MPs were in the dark about the origins of the party’s humongous war chest last elections? Why is it you people always never know?

  25. Enuuff,
Beats me that these Dems can come on this blog and pretend that they did not know where all the money they got to buy votes came from last election. DT got all the money and put it in FAMILIES FIRST account, every cheque to pay for advertising was signed by DT on the above account. So they can bury their heads in the sand.

The hypocrisy is what gets to me, all the while the dead king on a platform showing a election contribution cheque from 2003, the knuckle heads we have in this country never stopped to ask…wait if CCB gave Owen Arthur $75000, how much did the DLP get when the leader and the not a leper were tight buddies. Peter Wickham told the Americans they got 34 MILLION DOLLARS and not one of them has ever disputed the fact.

Anyway ac, I have been promised a copy of the JM report and I will post the findings on this blog for you to see how your dear revered Mr I will not lie, cheat or steal is implicated.

David, you dont have a copy yet? I’m shocked!

  26. SHOCK and AWE! the dead king is dead and will remain dead his time run out OAS seeking the highest office in the land . Now the race is between Stuart and the Thief who stole the campaign loot! Nothing about that story has changed . THE EMPEROR still needs new Clothes!

  27. Poor ac, I know it is too hard for you to face facts about your dead king, Mr I will not lie, cheat or steal!

  28. @Prodigal Son

  29. @ David and the BU Family.
I would be failing in my duty if I did not invite comment on the Nation Editorial of Thursday , March 22 , 2012 . It must be of some significance that while we are here on this medium discussing the irresponsible conduct of that Newspaper this editorial appears . It is clear to me that the editorial was written by a ” learned friend ” and might be intended to act as a kite flying exercise in this kite flying season .
The purpose of the editorial seems to be an attempt to draw our attention to the new practice that the Courts in Britain are prepared to overlook journalistic irresponsibility and unprofessional conduct if it considers that the matter raised through publication is “in the public interest ” . The requirement that there be a sub stratum of truth seems not to be a requirement for mounting a defence . The author does admit that the defence may not be valid outside of Britain ; It certainly would not be valid in Barbados as we have a Defamation Act which is even more modern than Britain’s . But I could not but feel that the newspaper is here testing the waters in an effort to fashion a response to the very thing we have been expressing our disapproval about .. the irresponsible conduct of this Newspaper .
I should like to invite fellow bloggers to have a read of this editorial and give your comments . Peace to all .

  30. @ David and the BU Family .
    We must be forever vigilant……

  31. @An Observer

Are you saying the case to which you reference Flood vs Times of London cannot be used as case precedent?

  32. @ David et al
It would not in the strictest sense bind the courts in Barbados but it may have what the courts refer to as persuasive authority . Therein lies the real danger . The writer AND THE NATION should however be reminded that kite flying in Barbados is now GREATLY RESTRICTED ; they should not expect to reap the kind of success that might ordinarily be expected from this editorial . Peace my brother .

Somebody at the Nation seems to agree with the writer of this story and it does appear that the efforts of the BU family are bearing fruit .

    ..
What is all this talk by Sen.Verla Depeiza and Hal really about ? Are they saying that there should be a HUSH on the JM Report document that is all about in circulationโ€ฆand should NOT be read , or discussed ..until the PM read it and comments about it ? I seek advice on the matter from you legal minds in here for freeโ€ฆlol

  41. I got the impression that there was some continuation of a discussion Sen. Depeiza had earlier in the week on another programme . But have you not seen that there is another twist to the CLICO saga ? Back page of today’s Nation : STOP ORDER ..Dottin told to halt court action against CLICO head. And the Parris lawyers are saying that means a halt against the Parris action as well because it is the same charge . I have warned that this matter will be played out in White Park Road and David has been continually drawing attention to that warning . Look out ! there are some serious lawyers involved in those CLICO matters . We might be in for a long haul .

  42. @An Observer

But you have not addressed the dilemma a ‘long haul’ in Whitepark will have for the political stock of PM Stuart.

  43. Should the JM’s report be made public if it contains evidence that warrants criminal charges?

If it contains evidence of fraud and corruption should it not first be handed to the DPP? Then if he finds nothing to charge anybody it could be published for all to read. (help us out Amused or Anonlegal).

I ask these questions because “mistakes” can be contrived to allow lawyers to create interminable delays.

Just think of how this report was distributed and who read it and didn’t read.
In Barbados No Justice more peace…. an nuff nuff legal fees.

  44. old onion bags Avatar

PM Stuart is playing a dead man’s game.I am sure more tact could have been applied.Laymen will only view this ONE WAY.

  45. @ David
I am now even more convinced than ever that the more the legal element of the case kicks in that the political element will recede , thereby reducing the negative impact it will have on PM Stuart .
As a matter of real interest David ..have you yet heard that Mr Parris is possibly the BIGGEST EFPA CLICO policy holder there is ? Now that is indeed interesting , for in a real sense Mrs Fowler and her ” COHORTS ” are fighting Mr Parris’ battle since he would stand to recover more than any other policyholder in the event that the BIPA efforts bear fruit . It is also known that the Nation Ltd is another major policyholder. Do you appreciate how complex this CLICO situation is developing ? It would be a matter of interest whether Mrs Fowler knows or has informed her association that she is effectively fighting the cause of Parris and the Nation Ltd ABOVE THE CAUSE OF EVERYONE ELSE . Talk about intrigue !!!! Peace my brother .

  46. To me, the long haul means there will be no resolution until well after elections. Since the matters will be well drawn out through the courts there will be no allowable discussion in official channels on the political ramifications of the $3.333 Million.

The CLICO matter will be channeled into areas related to the BIPA etc. discussion and if there is a resolution in that area the vote bean counters will be working to marginalise the EFPA holders votes and those of the other persons who would have suffered.

The strategy of deliberately avoiding any discussion of DT ‘s very clear and very dirty (as was his wont) involvement in the CLICO fallout will have worked.

The political stock of FS would have risen significantly.

The Opposition will have its work cut out to keep CLICO on the front burner. OSA obviously has no stomach for that fight and it is to be hoped that Mia will take on a higher profile in it.

  47. Observing (and disbelieving) Avatar
    Observing (and disbelieving)

    @david
You have asked a rhetorical questions. Some may feel that action and results in other areas over the next few months will “quiet” the CLICO storm, but alas this will not be the case. Without a resolution, a firm promise of a solution, a “financial” solution or the prosecution of a scapegoat for the stress (fast becoming) trauma that the average (not necessarily EFPA) policy holders are going through, the government will be politically held over and maybe even dropped into the coals. AX(??), LIME, now BNB, Barack et. al will only make the coals hotter. T-9 months (max) and counting. Question for bloggers….would the passage of IL and Prevention of Corruption at this undisputably twilight stage be enough to stem the receding tide when the bell tolls???

It is known that to operationalize when such legislation is enacted is a job in itself. It will take months maybe years.

” OSA obviously has no stomach for the fight “…
You seem to have forgotten the posting done on this blog of the implications of the Insurance Act on Mr OSA . That contribution gained wide coverage even on the call -in- programme brasstacks . You may ask David to direct you to the link , but in short, the Act places heavy responsibility on Mr Arthur for some of the problems CLICO experienced during the period 1994 – 2008 when he was minister of finance . You should take a read of that post . It goes way beyond a mere lack of intestinal fortitude on Mr Arthur’s part ; it also raises the question of his failure to act as the minister who had DIRECT RESPONSIBILITY for the functioning of the Supervisor of Insurances . Peace my friend .
