The business of tourism has been affected by the global recession precipitated by skyrocketing energy cost and the inevitable meltdown in world economies. Air travel has now become a very expensive undertaking. A Google will return any number of hits on the losses projected for the airline industry in 2009.

All the major tourist markets on which Barbados depend have shown decline. One market which has historically been given any significant highlight is intra-regional. Over the years the leading Caribbean islands have shown impotence when managing the regional network of airlines. The irony for Barbados and many of the islands has been the decision to build state of the art airports which have business models that require high taxes to ensure a good return on investment.

Against the above we are pleased to hear about the initiative being coordinated by Adrian Loveridge called re-Discover. Almost single-handed he has been responsible for coordination the re-Discover  Expo for the last eight years or so. As we understand it the event brings together several of the best small hotels from twenty Caribbean islands and other supporting businesses. Barbadians and others will have the opportunity this weekend to view with their own eyes the best kept small properties and ancillary bargains in the Caribbean. Loveridge appears to be doing his part to compete in a very crowded market.

Many will remember Adrian Loveridge for that time when he had to suffer through a VOB talk show by sitting in a different studio from former Minister Noel Lynch. The radio station admitted after that it was the only way Lynch would agree to the interview. Truly a dark day in the history of the Fourth Estate in Barbados.

Others remember him as a committed Barbadian who is passionate about tourism, an industry he has served for over forty years.

  1. Until regional government adjust the taxes and LIAT reduces the airfare or until some fast ferry system is established, re-discover the caribbean would just remain a thought “just beyond the imagination.” The people of the region are strangers because of this barrier.

  2. The old way of managing the tourism product is over. The market has become very crowded and Barbados cannot rest on its laurels. People like Loveridge who continue to demonstrate their love for the industry must be encouraged. Too often we allow our politics or personalities to stand in the way of efficiently calling on our resources. We understand that Minister Sealy will kick of the expo this weekend at Sherbourne. On behalf of the BU household we wish re-Discover 2009 every success.

    David,

Thank you for the mention and good wishes.
I do not think there has ever been a more important time to encourage travellers to holiday in the region.
Looking around at our neighbours and the escalating unemployment, we have to do something.

While, the Caribbean is our third largest major market, it receives the lowest per visitor arrival BTA promotional spend.

In fact previous re-DISCOVER shows have produced a ROI (Return on investment) of 24:1, which is higher than the vast majority of marketing initiatives implemented by the BTA.

We have tried a few different things this year including partnering with CBC MORNIN’ Barbados, our competition which attracted over 2,000 website page views yesterday alone, FaceBook (thanks Phil)
    and Utube.

Hopefully see you all at the show.

  5. Scraping the bottom of the barrel are we?

So much for hitting the ground running and having innovative ideas that they want to implement.

    Talk, talk and more talk!!!

But while they talk, tourist numbers and spending is declining.

Why is the DLP seeking to divorce product development from marketing? This silly government has succceeding only in creating a big mess in record time.

They even fired Inn Keeper – Loveridge!

  6. What I have to watch Morning Barbados every day…are you kidding me???

  7. Dark Knight and Cadogan have shown what jokers they really are…

The ENTIRE region must pull together – Antigua had a double-murder; J’ca had its hostage crisis and and here in B’dos we had Canadian Schwarzfeld injured to death…

Before we ALL get banned as a destination we need to unite and recreate our previous dominance!

Idiots like DK & CDC can be left at Culpepper Island to spew their diatribes for the crapaud to listen to…

  8. On a related note Barbados has plunged into the social network of Facebook. Check it out!

  11. Amazing how many entries in such a short space?

  12. Other islands in the Caribbean get special offers from Barbados through the BTA to come to Barbados, like the recent one for cricket. Why can’t bajans be given special offers from some Caribbean countries too? like St. Lucia for jazz? I don’t mean just to win one of five trips in the re-discover exhibition but special airfares for anyone going to jazz or any other special event.

  13. Why can’t bajans be given special offers from some Caribbean countries too? like St. Lucia for jazz?

I guess they feel they don’t need us as much as we feel we need them.

  14. How is the below article going to affect Barbados? Seeing as the USA is only two hours away from Bermuda and the flight will be alot cheaper than flying to Barbados.

Reproduced from the Bermuda Sun http://www.bermudasun.bm

FAIRMONT SPECIAL SEES 14,000 room nights booked in 99 hours.

The Fairmont Hotels of Bermuda took their proverbial lemons and made lemonade.

While many resorts all over the globe are suffering through the economic downturn, creative marketing from the Fairmont was able to turn that into a plus.

This past weekend Fairmont Bermuda ran a promotion offering a rate of $99 for only 99 hours. This promotion garnered approximately 14,000 room nights.

The Bermuda Department of Tourism said this innovative thinking is what is needed in this gloomy business climate.

Bermuda Department of Tourism Director William Griffith said in a press release:”The Department of Tourism encourages all tourism related businesses in Bermuda to develop innovative promotions and offers to demonstrate value and opportunity for our visitors. We promise to continue doing all we can to market and sell the destination, and to support the efforts of our partners.”

A press release from the DOT added: “When the Department of Tourism learned of Fairmont’s promotion, the Department immediately stepped in to support with sales and marketing efforts. An advertising banner and landing page was immediately developed for bermudatourism.com. A media release was distributed and the promotion was added to the Department’s Twitter account. Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read other users’ updates known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length which are displayed on the user’s profile page and delivered to other users who have subscribed to them (known as followers).”

Director of Global Operations, Bermuda Department of Tourism New York, Ann Shutte said: “We congratulate Fairmont for stepping up and being extremely courageous and creative in this difficult time. They decided on something very risky and produced great short term results. When we added the promotion to our Twitter page, 10 more journalists elected to follow the Department’s updates.”

A Google paid keyword search campaign was also developed. On Thursday alone, it produced 15,711 impressions and 150 clicks to a dedicated landing page created specifically to promote the offer. The Department also created a banner ad on the bermudatourism.com homepage, generating an additional 9,880 visits to the promotion’s site.

  15. Did anyone see that article in todays paper about the vincentian guy that got trailed by the police after clearing customs, taken back to immigration, searched, had his money and 2 articles of clothing confiscated.

I guess we can re-discover the caribbean, just dont try to do it if youre a dreadlocked vincentian, guyanese or jamaican.

Don’t believe eveything you read in a newspaper. My old lady always told me, a story has three sides, your side my side and the truth. Dreadlocked vincentians , guyanese, jamaicans and others come into Barbados almost daily. This report sounds sensational right, so you run with it. Soon some-one will come on the news an report that some “big boy” in government demand money from them to come into the island or some other rediculus story and you would run with that too. You fellows so quick to pull down Barbados. I was once in St Lucia and a friend of mine woke me one morning with a sound of excitement in his voice, the news to me was that he just heard that the Barbados dollar has just been devalued. Obviously, it was a lie but he was soooo excited to hear that news. Since it didn’t happen all of you are now coming here and trying everytrhing possible to pull down the little “big rock”> I got news for ALL of you BAJANS READY to defend what our ancestors left for us.

  17. Adrian how did re-DISCOVER 2009 go?

    David,

We are still working on the final attendance numbers but I think it was the best ever. Certainly the exhibitors were very happy.
We also did a few things differently like Utube and Facebook which attracted a lot of interest.
The prizes page on our website had 4,250 visits on one day (22 April).
Phil Archer of Crucial Productions spent nearly two hours filming the show and we will be posting a 5-7 minute video captulating the event on our website next week.

One point is that we used all locally available talent to promote the show.
Donna Redman (Acute Vision) Phil Archer (Crucial Productions) and Kathy and Andre (Axses Web Communications) who all did an excellent job and it demonstrates that
we have all the ability on our doorstep.

In view of the Swine Flu outbreak, Intra Caribbean travel will become even more critical to our tourism survival this year.
And I hope the regional Governments (including Barbados) will play their part by reducing the burdensome taxes on regional air travel, even if its just for the summer months.

  19. Ah, it seems you have the same problem as us. I tell you, it is in times like these that marketers need to be clever and efficient. You need to spend less money on hitting only the right people. One of the best ways to target travellers is with internet marketing. This does not mean just go dump money into banner ads. You need to get organized and have a strategy to put yourself on the right sites and get in front of the right audience.

Sure, nobody is going to go to Barbados because it is the cheapest place to visit. However, if you can demonstrate and advantage to the right people, you will succeed.
