vaccinationBU wonders why as consumers we respond to the rising cost of living by identifying rising food and fuel costs and the like but we are willing to ignore professional fees which have been galloping out of control in recent years. At the top of the list are legal and medical fees which seem to be fixed by arrangement.

Doctors and lawyers are worshipped by Barbadians. We make appointments to seek their sacred services and behold when we arrive we have the mandatory wait before we can get an audience.

For many years we have known that some of our doctors dispense drugs from their desk’s drawers. Many of the drugs are known to be samples distributed by the pharmaceutical agents to promote their respective drugs sales. Barbadians not to offend the goodly doctors meekly open purses/wallets to pay for drugs which should never, never be sold.

In some other countries, by other people this behaviour maybe deemed unethical, criminal even? In the prevailing depressed economic climate BU sources have advised of another practice which we find disturbing.

All parents of children have to ensure that their children are vaccinated. It is a requirement to gain admission to our schools.  There are other vaccinations which parents may give their children to build their immune system. We are aware that BU family member ROK has challenged how our society meekly receives vaccinations.

We understand that the going rate to have a vaccination administered by a doctor ranges between $100-$120. Additionally, the consulting fee can range between $80 -$120.

We question why our doctors need to fix such high fees for this reason:

We understand doctors in Barbados currently purchase bulk supplies of vaccines at a rate which is less than $40.00 per vaccine. Let us not forget their consulting fee. How should BU describe this state of affair? Should we call it profiteering? Maybe we should call it criminal!

It is amazing to BU that the officials in the relevant government departments e.g. The Barbados Drug Service management would be aware of how our doctors price their services for administering vaccines to our children yet they elect to participate in the price gouging conspiracy. What will it take to expose the free for all practices by many doctors which is contributing to our cost of living.

We could easily have blogged about a few of our well known pharmacies that price gouge – cartel behaviour we call it.

Our advice to Barbadians is to suppress their foolish pride and go to the Polyclinics, they deliver vaccination for free!

  1. @me

you still ain’t tell me who to complain to for the exhorbitant fees that doctors charge.

  2. Yes me i have a nasty temper, HOWEVER, I do not like to get on like a madman in front of my son (yes I admit he has seen me in action) but I dont like the idea that he would think that you should get on bad in front of people, and be disrespectful towards them. So I have learnt to try to calm down when in public and at work! Yes persons are under pressure at times within any job; however, we must remember that we are dealing with human beings. I concur, persons need to lobby the Government.

I have tried to get in contact with Dr. Ferdinand, I was told she returned my call but I was not at home. First thing tomorrow I will call her again, I will aso write a letter to Mr. Innis and CC it to Dr. Ferdinand as well! and no I dont thinkthat all Polyclinics are bad, as I told you I have never had a problem with that particular polyclinic I dont know probably stress!

Still I dont think that persons could be so mean that aint fair man!

ha ha ha dah one bad bout Jenkins that is the truth lol! I love it!

  3. ROK
Who will you complain to? If the doctor charges you the price in the BAMP tariff who will you complain to?

I thought that the law of supply and demand would kick in here. LOL

Wouldnt patients prefer to go to doctors who charge LESS than the fees in the tariff? They ought to, wont you think? But the facts are if you charge less than the tariff, patients tend to think there is something wrong with you.

ROK TO WHOM SHALL THE POPULACE COMPLAIN ABOUT THE FEES CHARGED BY ARTISANS?

  4. Annonymous
If you complain for a doctor the Ministry will come down on him like a ton of bricks, and even refuse to renew his contract. A doctor is the easiest person to fire in the Public Health system. They all work on contracts. If a guy is not liked, they just dont renew his contract. Easy so!

Now a civil servant like the receptionist- especially if she is appointed and in one of the unions is a different story. Most they can do is transfer the person.

  5. GP

I am not agreeing that people will think that something wrong with a doctor charging less. I do not know what the tariff is but the doctors who charging less than the others are over-burdened with patients.

Let me ask some questions: What is the purpose of having a tariff? Was it to stop over charging? To legitimise what doctors are charging? To arrive at a fair charge?

Man we will deal with the artisans in another thread. Let’s deal with the doctors now.

  6. It seems that we have struck a nerve by touching the sacred medical profession.

Wonder what would happen if we wrote about how the pharmacies price their products i.e. by calling around to their competition

Wonder what would happen if we recall that time when hundreds of policemen produced sick certificates when they went on sick out a few years back

Wonder what would happen if we critique the many doctors who create medical reports. If the insurance companies and the lawyers would be courageous enough to bring this issue to the public then we would see if this is about BU and a grouse.

Maybe our media houses could pick this issues up? Nah, don’t think so!

  7. I think that there are concerns that the Fair Trading has with fixing fees even within the medical fraternity, however I don’t think there is a body that controls the exact figures that my be charged. The feeling is that you have a choice to pay or go elsewhere. And that fees charged are based on numerous factors that must be taken into consideration. Private medical practices MUST be managed as businesses in this day and age whatever you might think.

  8. You struck a nerve by being so inflammatory…thank god you dont work for the legitimate news agencies otherwise they would be in court most of the time.

Doctors and the medical system here can be criticised and should be but this is not the way to do it… without investigation and understanding of the SYSTEM.

  9. Me

nobody has a quarrel with medical practices being managed as a business. Quite frankly most doctors have the bare minimum of equipment and charge the same price as medical clinics.

If you ask me, medical clincs should be providing a specialised service, which would allow them to charge a price comparable to the service they offer.

I do not think that Fair Trading covers professions that are regulated by their own bodies. I will check.

  10. @me

I don’t think you understand. It is not a question that this is the right place. It is that where there is no room for negotiation otherwise, the blog is a good way to get the public aware and also to apply pressure to those in the position to do something about it.

Always more than one way to skin a cat.

  11. @GP

Where can we access this tariff you mentioned. We have never heard of it. Maybe me can post it.

  12. Thanks GP, I know nothing wont happen, because I even overheard the lady stating that she was there fo 25 years! So I know that nothing wont happen.

Beween me and you GP I don’t want her to be transferred i just want her to treat everyone with the same respect I felt so bad that my son did not get to see anyone!

I cannot allow my son to think that the lady’s whole attitude towards us was right, I have to take a stance so he would know that it was wrong! I guess you realise that I have not mentioned the specific Polyclinic, that is because I think they still play a vital part within the community and would not try to curse everyone and I cannot in all fairness categorise all of them as being unprofessional!

I just demand proper working ethics!

  13. Hopi wrote “Black folks do not NEED to be vaccinated. Our bodies have a natural immunity. ”

J writes “Germs cannot distinguish between black people and white people”

Hopi wrote “Why is it that certain religious sects i.e. Jehovah Witnesses do not vaccinate and they have no DIS-eases?”

J writes “Jehovah’s Witnesses DO vaccinate their children”

J writes “A disease cannot circulate and spread unless there are a good number of un-immunized people in the population. So in fact the immunized ones act as protection for the others.”

J writes “Why does Hopi insist in insulting our people by portraying them as sheep?”

J writes “Do you feel like a sheep Hopi?

  14. yes but just because you have a blog where you can post anonymously does not mean that you should posts inflammatory articles that disparage an entire group of people especailly when you know that some people refuse to think for themselves.

The article has not presented the otherside or shown any knowledge of the other side…

  15. @Anonymous: “…So I know that nothing wont happen.

So then, from your above, you know something will happen.

That’s the spirit! Positive thinking goes a long way!!!

  16. You are correct that this blog was meant to disparage those doctors who engage in inappropriate behaviour. The fact that you have stretched it to include the whole profession is your stretch.

Please remember that we will always err on the side of the PEOPLE.

  17. @ David
I am assuming that there is an updated tarriff since the one I recieved in 1981 when I was in BAMP.

  18. Anonymous

I didnt say that nothing wont happen. That was not the idea I wanted to convey. I think you should complain, but I was just telling you how it works. If Donville will succeed he must do something to change how folk treat patients. He must develop a system for complaints that is fair, for both the complainer and the complainee, such that niether will be victimised.

  19. Hopi: You are about 55 years behind the times in regards to your assertion that Jehovah’s Witnesses do not believe in vaccination. In 1952 the official position of the leaders of Jehovah’s Witnesses reversed their teachings and beliefs on vaccination and even speculated on how many of their faithful had died as a result J.C. Woodworths original opposition to vaccinations. You could have discovered that yourself if you had used your computer for purposes other than disseminating total hogwash.

  20. We should not be scared of doctors. After all WE PAID FOR THEIR TRAINING. They OWE us good care at REASONABLE costs.

I’ve never paid $120 for an office visit.

If my children are sick and I do not have the money I always tell the doctor that I will pay on payday. The doctors always agree and I always keep my word.

The polyclinics are wonderful especially for well baby care and elder care. Certainly the well baby care at the polyclinics is of first world standard. Unless your child has a really serious chronic illness then the polyclinics are the best option.

About 13 years ago my employer was sending me overseas for training and sent me a a brand name doctor. He did the usual, blood pressure, blood sugar etc.; then sent me to a private lab for a chest x-ray; to the Winston Scott polyclinic for a TB test and sent my employer a bill for $650.

Yes indeed $650 thirteen years ago to tell an employer that an early 40’s employee is in excellent health.

Still in excellent health. And I’ve never walked through his door again.

But I walk 3 miles a day just for fun.

    Doctors wuh???????????

  21. Chris I am part of the Civil Service (I don’t know if you are being sarcastic) but i know how it goes I can tell what will happen ……. a lot of apologies and blah blah blah. however if this stance that I have taken causes the lady to treat everyone with the same respect I think my task would have been accomplished!

I know my statement might sound stupid but that is how the Civil Service works I hope you realise that at least i was bold enough to do something as in posting on this blog and I have left my name and number Dr. Ferdinand as well as the Nurse I spoke to at the Polyclinic I am not a damn coward or a liar!

  22. David

What do you want to know about how the pharmacies price their products?

You realize that pharmacies don’t make their money on drugs, but on the front store items. If it were not for the drug service relationship with pharmacies, most small pharmacies would have to close.
Do you know that there was a tariff set up sometime in the 80’s.by which pharmacies can decide what markup they can charge, and that there were/ are restrictions to the markup that pharmacies can charge. The higher the cost of the RX, the lower the percentage markup. Is there VAT on drugs?

What do you want to know about the many doctors who create medical reports?

Making money for writing medical reports is a bother did you know that? Except if you are a specialist, in which case the insurance companies let you get away with murder. They will often pay what ever the doctor charges the patient- usually up front.

I used to love to read those reports, because they didn’t use to say much. Some of the fellas had a penchant for writing lofty prose using the medical jargon, but saying nothing that could possibly benefit the patient. I used to tell patients who came to me with copies of such reports…..There is nothing that a lawyer can do to help you with this report. It doesn’t say anything really.

On the other hand, the insurance companies used to challenge short pertinent reports that dealt with the issues at hand written by struggling GP’s!

What do you want to know about the hundreds of policemen who produced sick certificates when they went on sick out a few years back in 1999? David are you saying that the police were not sick? How do you know that they were not sick with severe depression at the way they were treated, and the state of the stations at which they worked etc? LOL

All hell gwine let lose now! Murder

  23. @Me

You assuming that we are irresponsible, well I challenge you to show me which post in this thread was inflammatory?

  24. @me

Look sharp, yours may be the only one that is inflammatory.

great and balanced opinion with evidence of thorough investigation… but you like BFP cant help but demonize people as a group…its your only tactic for getting readership. That and bigging up the DLP

and your want your blog to be considered legit… For me it is entertainment on the one hand but a dangerous tool on the other!

  26. @me

Your last comment reads familiar. We read it a year and a half ago when we blogged about the open door immigration policy of the previous government.

  27. @me

Your last comment reads familiar. We read it a year and a half ago when we blogged about the open door immigration policy of the previous government.

Your problem with BU is that we have laid off attacking the DLP isn’t it?

BTW we write what we write and you or anybody is free to comment challenge whether we agree or not.

  28. me wrote “Are you aware of how much it costs to educate an MD?
Are you awar that not all MD won Barbados scholarhsips or obtained their degrees through government funding. ”

I put it to you that the MAJORITY of doctors younger than 50 have had their medical education paid for the the taxpayers of this country. Still some doctors would like us to believe that they paid hundreds of thousands of dollars out of thier own pockets. They did not. For most doctors in modern Barbados their education from nursery school to post graduate medical education was paid for by the tax burdened citizens of this country.

This is something that should ALWAYS be at the front of the minds of BOTH doctors and patients.

  29. GP

What would be the symptoms of severe depression? To what extent did these Policemen suffer these symptoms? Is there a log at the station that would record such behaviour?

Does such severe depression warrant sick leave? How much?

  30. @GP

Are all doctors qualified to write accident/insurance reports?

Do you know of any instances where the insurance companies would require a second opinion/report?

Why would a doctor charge between $450.00-$650.00 for an accident report which summarizes the patient notes already on file. What are we missing GP?

    Enlighten us!

  31. me

is that a list of the inflammatory statements in the blog? That sounds like a list of experiences by hose who had the experience. How inflammatory is that? No doctor ever sold samples? Nobody ever waited 2 to three hours for an appointment?

Is it inflammatory to question what a person may consider to be a high fee for the service being offered?

Vaccines are not sold at a bulk price of $40.00? We would expect that any businessman would take out expenses and put on a reasonable mark-up on items.

So give us the information and statistics to disprove all the above and if you can, then you can speak of inflammatory… and since I suspect you can’t, then it would have to be conclusive that you have not listed anything inflammatory.

  32. Its your blog do as u will but like u said i can have an opinion… jsut dont expect me ti take u seriously.

Sick leave is an issue for me and inmy opinion is extremely difficult to address especially if the issue is psychological. As an employer can I say that my employee is not sick.

Medical reports…definitely an ethical issue that should be addressed by the medical Act.

  33. Rok u say to-mah-to I say to-may-to…

  34. @me

That is all you have to say about over 200 policemen being able to get sick notes? Even if the doctors were duped to giving them given the scale of the sick out should it not have warranted an investigation?

  35. ROK

What would be the symptoms of severe depression? LOOK THEM UP ONLINE
To what extent did these Policemen suffer these symptoms? ASK THE DOCTORS WHO SAW THEM
Is there a log at the station that would record such behaviour? WHY WOULD THEY BE? POLICE ARE NOT DOCTORS
Does such severe depression warrant sick leave? WHAT DO YOU THINK ?How much? THAT WOULD BE AT THE DOCTORS DISCRETION AND JUDGEMENT. LOL

    DAVID

Are all doctors qualified to write accident/insurance reports? YES WHY NOT
Do you know of any instances where the insurance companies would require a second opinion/report? YES
Why would a doctor charge between $450.00-$650.00 for an accident report which summarizes the patient notes already on file. YOU TELL ME. ACTUALLY THE PRICES YOU QUOTE ARE REAL CHEAP FOR WHAT SPECIALIST USED TO CHARGE FOR A REPORT ALONE MAN . LOL

FYI an accident report does more than summarizes the patient notes already on file. Do you suppose that it takes time for such a summary to be done, and to get it typed?
FYI an accident report is a pain in the back side.

    ME
You are correct in your opinion that sick leave is an extremely difficult to address especially if the issue is psychological. As an employer can I say that my employee is not sick YOU CANT YOU ARE NOT QUALIFIED TO DO SO LOL

  36. @ David
Re That is all you have to say about over 200 policemen being able to get sick notes? Even if the doctors were duped to giving them given the scale of the sick out should it not have warranted an investigation?

How exactly would you carry out such an investigation, David?

If a patient says he has X symptoms, you have to be careful how you say he doesnt, dont you think?

Do you really think that the doctors were duped David?

  37. @PiedPaper….Did you actually come back to me with this trash. Didn’t you PROVE ME RIGHT earlier?

@J…..Everytime you are on this blog it seems like your estrogen is in HIGH gear.
Black people who have NOT been watered down DO NOT need vaccines.
Don’t you know that the satanic scientist have developed specific bio-weapons?
I know Jehovah’witnesses who DO NOT vaccinate.
‘A disease cannot…….’ Where did you quote this drivel from? This is another lie propagated by the drug companies.
Let me tell you a little something about vaccines and tell me if you would put this shit in your body.
Vaccines contain aborted foetuses, chicken embryos, monkey tissue, sodium chloride, aluminum, hydrochloric acid, phosphates, formaldehyde and thimerosal just to name a few. Would you put this crap in your body?
Black people have got to be dumbest, bleeping sheeps on this planet. Every drop of drivel that come across that idiot box, or is published in a book by whitey, most of us believe it and if a so-called scientist or educator put it out there it has got to be true. So what we do, we repeat that LIE until everyone else repeats it and then it becomes TRUE, it becomes our reality. That is called mind-programming or mind control and for the most part that is how whitey and all his establishments have the mind of Black people on full lock down. In 1492 didn’t christopher columbus sail the ocean blue and discover the new world where natives had been living for eons? Didn’t whitey once say that the earth was flat? J, my sista learn to decipher and stop being confident and contented in your ignorance because ignorance is what is devouring us Black people. FOR A LACK OF KNOWLEDGE MY PEOPLE PERISH. Vaccines suppres our NATURAL IMMUNE SYSTEM.

  38. @GP

We hope your slip is not showing.

How many doctors issued the sick certificates?

How would we know if the doctors were dupes unless there was an effort to investigate. maybe a policeman if interrogated may have shed light.

  39. I have some inside info about alot of whats being discussed here but i dont think this is the place to do it….

all I will say is that if we expect a better Barbados each and everyone of us have to be willing to play out part. NOT JUST the doctors. Each of us have to have realistic expectations and be willing to work to change the system so that it is fair to all. I could say dont hate the palya hate tha game but that is trite. I say we change the game.
I hope that BU goes back to the drawung table and comes back to us with sound well thoughtout and investigated articles that serve to educate us instead of bitter complaints. Bring solutions too instead of just hyperbole…

    have a good night folks!

  40. David I dont know how many doctors issued the sick certificates? Do you?

  41. me // January 11, 2009 at 7:15 pm

You struck a nerve by being so inflammatory…thank god you dont work for the legitimate news agencies otherwise they would be in court most of the time.

    What a hypocrite!!
Do you understand the doctors or the system in Cuba???

  42.

Actually it was over 400 policemen on sick leave. It would suggest to us that several doctors would have issued those certificates GP.

Inter Press Service English News Wire

    08-12-2000

BRIDGETOWN, Aug. 11 (IPS) — Barbadian police have begun

returning to work as sick-out protests by almost half the

nation’s officers inch to an end.

This resumption of duties, however, does not mean all is well

    with the island’s finest.

It is widely believed that most of the 450 police officers who

are returning to work from sick leave are taking up their posts

only because their medical certificates have expired, while

dissatisfaction within the ranks over pay and conditions of work

    lingers.

Just over two weeks ago, the police association held a mass

meeting at which officers vented their complaints. Since then,

    members of this …

I have. And I’ve also had my children vaccinated.

I am a lot older that you are. In the pre-vaccine Barbados in which I grew up I knew of 3 people who were seriously and permanently disabled by polio. No “the white man” did not tell me so. These people were neighbours and schoolmates.

In my village in the 1950’s and 60’s virtually every child became very sick withthe measles. Have you ever had measles Hopi? I have. Have you ever seen a seven year old boy with the mumps? I have. Do you know any men who have to deal with their mumps caused sterility? I do.

You and your children are young enough that you are benefitting from the near universal vaccination in Barbados. You can afford to be smug. It was not always so.

  44. Hopi,

    sodium chloride is just salt

    t

  45. @J…….Now I see why you think the way you do. Too much toxins in ya body. You don’t need to look anywhere, just your thought pattern alone tells me that you are watered down. You knew of 3 people. That’s all, only 3. Again you too have PROVEN my point with the measles issue. Aren’t vaccinations supposed to be a method of prevention? How the hell did they still get measles? Let me show you how you don’t get it. How do you conclude that my children and I benefit from near universal vaccinations in Barbados. I said that I have NOT vaccinated my children. What protects me and others like myself from these DIS-eases? Let me tell you a little something..in India there was a TB vaccine trial of about 260k Indians and what was the result – more cases of TB among the vaccinated than the unvaccinated. Do you know that the people who make and distribute vaccines and who pass bogus laws making them compulsory DO NOT put the shit in their bloodstreams?

@Chemist…..Why would you put sodium chloride in a vaccine and put it in a child’s body. Don’t the ‘doctors’ tell you to stay away from it. Don’t just address sodium chloride look at all the other ‘ingredients.’

  46. J

I would like to suggest that the crises we had then we do nothave now and those diseases which the white man threw upon us are all but killed out. Why do we believe that these diseases are a natural part of us? They never were until the white man came.

So you mean that after 400 years we not only remain slaves, but you mean that they must continue to profit from their own evil?

I have suggested that we need to do the reasearch and ascertain what we are doing and not blindly go along with a sentiment from the past.

Our drugs and medical bills are too high and we are feeding our population with drugs and ending up with high incidences of Asthma and resporatory diseases, causing heart attacks in children and generally producing, more and more, a fragile population.

People, TIME TO WAKE UP. Western medicine is failing us or is it that we are failing ourselves by being dependent on a corrupt system called the West?

  47. Dear Hopi:

I knew 3 people, from 3 different villages nearby. Barbados has maybe 400 villages. If polio disabled even only 1 person in every other village that would be 200 disabled people. Do you think that we should permit hundreds of our children to become disabled? Instead of talking foolishness why don’t you go to some of the district hospitals so that you can meet some of those Barbadians who were permanently disabled by polio in the 1950’s and have spent the rest of their lives in an institution? Or is it that you are afraid to come face to face with the truth and would rather believe myths?

Hopi wrote “Again you too have PROVEN my point with the measles issue. Aren’t vaccinations supposed to be a method of prevention? How the hell did they still get measles?”

We got the measles because we had NOT been immunized. We had not been immunized becasue our parents were too poor to afford immunization, or in some cases the colonial government did not care if little black children got sick, disabled or died and did not provide free vaccines. In some cases the particualr vaccine had not yet been created.

You really need to talk to your ELDERS. You have a lot to learn.

  48. ROK wrote “I would like to suggest that the crises we had then we do not have now and those diseases which the white man threw upon us are all but killed out”

The bacteria and viruses that cause these childhood diseases are still there. They are just being kept at bay by immunization. And no the “white man” did not throw these diseases upon us. These diseases are unfortunately human diseases which have killed as many white children as black. Sometimes I think that we give the “white man” way too much power. The “white man” is neither a god nor a devil. He is only human just like us. He is no more powerful than we are.

  49. @J…… You were not ‘immuniized’ against measles and you became infected. Did it phu..ing kill you. Aren’t you still alive to spew their dogma. Didn’t the natural immunity that your body was engineered with fight it off? I guarantee you that if I talk with the ELDERS they will tell me that they were quite fine until the white man introduced his poisons via viruses to them.

  50. Hop: I find myself actually feeling sorry for you. You suffer from constipation of the mind for which there has not yet been developed an enema. You appear unable to read comprehensively, either that or you deliberately choose to twist what you read. Most children receive their first set of innoculations at 12 months or younger and even if a certain percentage of those children had been born with autism, it would not yet have been diagnosed. It is only when children reach the benchmark age of 18 months to 2 years that assesment of cognitive and social skills begins to reveal developmental delays. In other words, in a child younger than 18 months it is impossible to determine cognitive impairment unless they are born with obvious mental handicapps such as retardation.
You do black doctors, scientists and researchers a great disservice by dismissing the whole issue of communicable disease and it’s prevention through vaccination by making completely wild and unsubstantiated claims of a “whitey” conspiracey to “poison” black folks.
If you go to the website for The World Health Organization, you will see the statistics for Barbados and how the rise and fall of childhood communicable diseases is as a direct result of immunization which, by the way, is mandatory for admission to school.
Are you aware that Tuberculosis, after almost being irradicated through innoculation, is on the rise again due to the ease of world travel, available to those from third world countries where immunization is almost non-existant?
Are you aware that the origins of most communicable diseases come from the animal kingdom and man’s domestication of animals as a food source? Pigs, horses, cows, monkeys and many other animals harbour viruses which over the centuries, mutated allowing transmission to humans to take place. Africa had all of these viruses long before the white man set foot on the continent of Africa or China.
Your attempt to discredit “J’ by making mock of the fact that she knew 3 individuals who were stuck down by polio is hypocritical as you, yourself, have only related personal experience as your proof that immunization is is a big conspiracey. You have provided no factual evidence and demonstrated only a small world, small mind mentality. I can only hope that the opinions you have expressed are those of a very small minority of Bajans otherwise I do not see how Barbados can possibly move forward as a progressive society.
