vaccinationBU wonders why as consumers we respond to the rising cost of living by identifying rising food and fuel costs and the like but we are willing to ignore professional fees which have been galloping out of control in recent years. At the top of the list are legal and medical fees which seem to be fixed by arrangement.

Doctors and lawyers are worshipped by Barbadians. We make appointments to seek their sacred services and behold when we arrive we have the mandatory wait before we can get an audience.

For many years we have known that some of our doctors dispense drugs from their desk’s drawers. Many of the drugs are known to be samples distributed by the pharmaceutical agents to promote their respective drugs sales. Barbadians not to offend the goodly doctors meekly open purses/wallets to pay for drugs which should never, never be sold.

In some other countries, by other people this behaviour maybe deemed unethical, criminal even? In the prevailing depressed economic climate BU sources have advised of another practice which we find disturbing.

All parents of children have to ensure that their children are vaccinated. It is a requirement to gain admission to our schools.  There are other vaccinations which parents may give their children to build their immune system. We are aware that BU family member ROK has challenged how our society meekly receives vaccinations.

We understand that the going rate to have a vaccination administered by a doctor ranges between $100-$120. Additionally, the consulting fee can range between $80 -$120.

We question why our doctors need to fix such high fees for this reason:

We understand doctors in Barbados currently purchase bulk supplies of vaccines at a rate which is less than $40.00 per vaccine. Let us not forget their consulting fee. How should BU describe this state of affair? Should we call it profiteering? Maybe we should call it criminal!

It is amazing to BU that the officials in the relevant government departments e.g. The Barbados Drug Service management would be aware of how our doctors price their services for administering vaccines to our children yet they elect to participate in the price gouging conspiracy. What will it take to expose the free for all practices by many doctors which is contributing to our cost of living.

We could easily have blogged about a few of our well known pharmacies that price gouge – cartel behaviour we call it.

Our advice to Barbadians is to suppress their foolish pride and go to the Polyclinics, they deliver vaccination for free!

  1. It seems that you guys have strayed very far off the topic.

HOW can our doctors do more to help the people of Barbados.

Or rather do we really need the help of doctors? Does this administration want doctors to help? Have they asked doctors to help? We know that they have not taken seriously the advice given on this forum by GP.

  2. I do love links, so here is another one for Hopi and ROK: http://www.healthzone.ca/health/article/570041

  3. Gnong i was one who was guilty of this as well; PP just chillou and dea with the issues at hand! Yes Doctors should strive to make which ever community they practice in healthier!

  4. @JC….I still want to know which block.

  5. Original southside! Not a big block but we cool and irie! No gangsters just irie people!

  6. @ JC/Ganong

“How can doctors help their society?”
JC suggest that “Doctors should strive to make which ever community they practice in healthier!”

Help me to understand where I am lost JC.

Doctors make a living when people get (or are made to feel that they are) ill…. If everyone were perfectly healthy, doctors would actually have a challenge in making ends meet – certainly in paying for the benz…

…why then would a doctor promote health?

If we had a system where doctors made MORE money when their patients were healthy (and less when they fell ill) then I could see your point…

Bush tea would think that nothing honestly pleases a doctor more than a little epidemic here and there…

…there must be something wrong with a system like that… despite GP’s protestations that doctors are well meaning folks who want to see their patients healthy (ie not paying patients)

  7. I just got in from earning my daily Loonie and I see that some one under the blog name of “Seawell” which is the latest incarnation of Diggit intimated that I am Pied Piper. All these posts and the only thing that he can contribute is to hypothesize the theory that I post under multiple names. What does he contribute? Nada, zero, zilch?. “Seawell” I think that you are miscast here, since your sleuthing skills are so advanced why don’t you volunteer those skills to the RBPF. I mean if you can tell which bloggers from Canada are using multiple identities think of what you can do for the Maloney case and any other unsolved crimes.

There, I’ve put you on the path to island wide fame, people will name their children after you, perhaps you will become a national hero with all the attendant fame and fortune that would bring.

As for me I’ll buy a suit and send it to you…….. a clown suit

  8. Bush Tea

JC is correct in suggesting that “Doctors should strive to make which ever community they practice in healthier!”

You are lost by assuming that doctors only make a living when people get (or are made to feel that they are) ill. Doctors also have a responsibility in teaching people to be well and to stay well. It is certainly the role of doctors to promote health- and this does not mean only doctors in Public Health.

Whereas as you point out If everyone were perfectly healthy, doctors would actually have a challenge in making ends meet.

When they are little epidemic here and there…doctors do make more money, but they have to work harder and do longer hours and thus spend more time away from their wives and children. Hence the high divorce rate of most successfull doctors.

Whatever are the realities of what happens in societies where some doctors do make lots of money- I have never done- “Doctors should strive to make which ever community they practice in healthier!”

And it ought to be possible for the intelligent and supposedly educated folk who opine on this forum to be able to suggest how this can be done, instead of spewing loads of bovine excrement.

  9. Hopi & ROK are right in the assessment of western doctors.A bunch of money grabbers who really do not give a damn if their patients live or die.I avoid doctors at all cost.
ROK is right. The biggest contributor to all of our health problems is the intake of food and the poisonous meat.
The local doctors are hostile against herbalist & people who are pushing the alternative health programme. These doctors know that once the people educate themselves about the benefits of herbs, and use herbs wisely, eliminate meat from their diet, cleanse their system daily, drink a lot water preferably distilled water and get adequate exercise & rest. The visits to the doctors will be no more.I am a vegetarian, use herbs wisely and get enough exercise & rest and have not being sick for the last 20 years. Not even a cold bothers me and I am near 50 years.
Fellow bloggers if you all need more information on the importance of herbs their usage to combat many diseases. Please seek out the herb book by Dr Llaila Afrika or visit the rasta shop in Carrington Village ask for Brother Heru.He will provide all the answer for any question concerning your health, diseases and anything along those lines.
Local doctors should be avoided at any cause especially those at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

  10. Whatever are the realities of what happens in societies where some doctors do make lots of money- I have never done- “Doctors should strive to make which ever community they practice in healthier!”
    ……………………………………………………….
Oh Bush Tea, only if the other Docs have morals like you. That’s why we had fewer doctors years ago, yet, the country was not as sick as it is today. We need you back doc.

  11. @ GP
Surely you have worked out by now that Bush Tea was not born yesterday GP.
    …you think I are a idiot?!?

I agree that it sound real good to talk about doctors ‘striving to promote good health’ but who are we trying to fool GP?

Doctors dispense medicine to sick people for a living. Therefore they need sick people to make a living. Therefore they are not inclined to actively prevent persons from becoming ill – for example by promoting good preventative habits, diet, and practices. (except for token gestures from a few well meaning/ spiritually inclined goody two shoes)

  12. Negroman

I am glad that you are starting to go into the realm of nutrition. Let me say here too, that when the flu is going around “brekking-up” people, I am in another world that does not know anything about the flu.

I am also happy that you mentioned Bro. Heru. He would tell you that I had this conversation with him about a year ago. What can we do to get people more in control of their health?

I will go further and state that the hate for herbalists and alternative medicine which exists among the doctors is definitely a knee-jerk reaction to a perceived threat.

As a matter of fact, whenever such negative criticism is generated, those who are so critical should always come under the microscope. You are leaving a whole population ignorant and vulnerable so that what? You could become busy when there are outbreaks? Maybe it is so you can maintain an elite group?

GP is correct. Because the population is healthy does not mean that doctors will starve, but that their knowledge will be put to different use. There are many lawyers who don’t go to court. Many trained journalists that make their skills available for other purposes.

Doctors can attach themselves to persons practicing alternative medicine. They can make themselves available for research. Become more consultants than being GPs. Many doctors simply qualify in order to be able to make a quick dollar and really are not keen about medicine.

They can also get into the production and quality control of over-the-counter medication and supplements. We have an entire Caribbean Market that will listen to us. This is an opportunity for doctors to lead the way out of this Western system, because once we break the medical and health myths, many more of the myths will fall.

Furthermore, if we create these savings, it will give us the capacity to be better equipped to deliver a superior health service to all Barbadians.

  13. Bush Tea
    Im an idealist.
I always thought I could get ahead with out ripping off people. I have never overcharged my patients, and often I didnt get even what I charged. But I always had more than I needed.

Divorce and then a few bad investments destroyed me. I know that we can do better. Doctors make a living by several means beside seeing the sick.

Being good to patients has long lasting results. There is a lady that I dont think that I did so much for- except to see her dowstairs in my little office early one morning and sent her to hospital some 25 years ago. She is still bringing ground provisions etc to my parents home. She has paid me how many times over.

  14. @GP
As I said, I was not born yesterday.
It is clear to me from your various blog posts that you are a special person – and probably a special doctor.

I am not talking about you -or the few others like you GP. You sound like the kind of doctor that would still make a house visit – and wait til’ pay day for your money too (LOL)…

..But if you think that most doctors are like you… then I real sorry for you GP.

  15. alot of BS

    Sickness happens

Doctors do not know everything ( they actually know comparatively little when we really think about it)

What they do know they via public lectures, this week and that health week etec they pass on.

Do we as a society listen.

Is diabetes high ONLY because ‘doctors’ dont tell you to cut down on sugar, exercise more etc…

Is HIV continuing to gallop because ‘doctors’ dont tell you to wear a condom , be faithful to your wife etc?

I think it is incredible that you guys put so much weight on ‘doctors’ then wonder why they charge so much?

    We can all do more…!

  16. GP you didnt have to say that …. just by your commets we can tell you are fair and honorable ……..

By the way it is nice to know you are divorced I was never married theefore

    divorced+nevermarried= perfect couple!

  17. Bush Tea I concur, however the question that was asked by Ganong was

HOW can our doctors do more to help the people of Barbados.

    I just answered the question!

Moreover, I HOPE (you realise that I used caps) that Doctors are sincere when they tell me to eat and exercise regularly and all the others that ‘me’ has mentioned!

  20. @JC… I 2nd this union. Don’t forget to send Hopi an invite. See what happens when good, honorable people become christians, they start gambling and lose everything.

  21. ha ha ha ha we will remain good people! GP has loads of experience in that field and I am a quick learner LOL!

  22. Bush Tea

I understand what you are saying, but I still think that the people should be able to work out solutions to our heath problems- not only disease issues; and the doctors should be at the forefront.

In 1984 the doctors closed ranks and refused to cooperate with the government of the day in setting up a NHS similar to the British system which required doctors to be responsible for thier patient panels 24/7 all year round. The doctors were all offered a nurse and a receptionist at governments expense.

Being a rebel, and having read up the various health systems in Europe I wrote the PM in early 1985 and offered my solution. I repeated to a minister of government whom I confronted. The result is history- the polyclinics as we know them since Sept 1 1985.

Now we need an advancement on the present situation. I submitted my ideas last year. Perhaps they are nonsense. But surely some one can offer something better- or something else.

@ JC Ok we will have to arrange a big do for Ch Ch Parish Church some time this year.

  23. Hopi

That video led me to others. Indeed, watching these videos provide evidence of nearly everything we have been saying in this thread about western medicine.

That video have 16 parts, but then check the video series called “In Lies we Trust” and then, “Psychiatry: An Industry of Death, Introduction”.

It would be good if the whole of Barbados watched these videos. It’s about Psychiatry, but let me say that the motive behind the production of all drugs is the same. If I am not mistaken, doctors prescribe these drugs too.

  24. ROK. Once they got the mind on ‘lock down’ the body is putty in their hands.

  25. Not many people can afford to spend an entire day at the polyclinic waiting to be seen. Many employers aren’t very understanding.I’ve heard some say that they will no longer hire single parents or young girls with children because of the amount time spent away from the job taking children to different appointments.

  26. GP, JC, & all who believe that doctors can do more. I want to explore something here with you. Do doctors or medicine heal the body?

I will contend that the body heals itself and I draw on two observations to support the argument.

First, the biblical account of the woman who stood in the way in order to touch Christ’s garment becuase she strongly felt that if she did so she could be healed. On sensing the touch Christ told her it was not him, but her faith that healed her.

I contrast that with the phenomenom of the placebo, where a person is given a dud and told it is medicine to heal the body and they get better.

My hypothesis is that when people go to a doctor, whether that doctor does something with them or not, that faith that the doctor can cure, is at least 75% of the healing if not the required 100%.

I am sure that many doctors found that out for themselves.

  27. Fool!
Doctors can do more. They can doctor, i.e TEACH! Remember doceo (Latin) to teach?

Stop trying to show that you know everything on the blog.

Jesus’ healing the woman was a placebo? What an ass you are.

  28. Wait……not one word about the Cholera epedemic that has killed 2200 people suh far? This mutual admiration society gine say it is a whitey conspiracey to kill of black folks? Tell that to Mugabe!

  29. Who cares about a cholera epidemic in Zimbabwee when we can discuss the fact that Israel was pummeling the Palesinians?

  30. @Another View

How you come to that conclusion? Who is the real ass? You can read?

I leave it to you who knows everything but can’t read and understand.

  31. Cholera: A perfect example

Wikipedia: “Cholera, sometimes known as Asiatic or epidemic cholera, is an infectious gastroenteritis caused by enterotoxin-producing strains of the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Transmission to humans occurs through eating food or drinking water contaminated with cholera vibrios. The major reservoir for cholera was long assumed to be humans themselves, but considerable evidence exists that aquatic environments can serve as reservoirs of the bacteria.”

How did they find out that aquatic environments can serve as reservoirs of the bacteria? In any case, the most dumb person could deliberately cause an outbreak.

    Is there a Cholera vaccination?

Wikipedia: “Although cholera can be life-threatening, prevention of the disease is straightforward if proper sanitation practices are followed. In the first world, due to advanced water treatment and sanitation systems, cholera is no longer a major health threat.”

Wikipedia: “A vaccine is available in some countries (not the US), but this prophylactic is not currently recommended for routine use by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).”

So much for not reviewing vaccines. We end up being the ignorant ones so vocal against reviewing our health care, but the very people who are selling us these things are reducing and eliminating their use in developed countries.

  32. ROK
You obviously dont recognize sarcasm when you see it.

How did they find out that aquatic environments can serve as reservoirs of the bacteria? BY EPIDEMIOLOGICAL STUDIES.

There is no need for a vaccine fool. Cholera is handled by providing clean bacteria free water.

You love to talk a lot of shite- and often obviously out of your area of expertise. You are hilarious. (from Latin hilariter)

  33. @another view

I am happy that I could provide you with laughter. That obviously needs no expertise.

You seem to want to emulate Gear Box but you have to go and come again.

A vaccine is available in some countries (not the US) Arrrrrrrrghhhhhhh

  34. A vaccine is available in some countries (not the US)

Is it needed in the countries that use the vaccine?

Is it needed in the USA?

Have you studied Public Health, or know anything about Public Health or treating cholera?

  36. Alternative medicine is actually complementary medicine, and it help to heal, i fnot cure, depending on the mental, physical and social milieu o fthe patient. One should go to a regular MD (allopathic medicine) but there is only so much s/he can do!
Diabetes (NIDDM) and hypertension, all leading to cardiovascukar disease(s), when left untreated, is the highest cause of death in the West Indies and much of the strategies lie in the hands of the patient, i.e. diet and exercise, walking, yoga, taijiquan (tai chi), knitting, dancing, etc all provide the social environment to counter negative behaviours.
Alternatibe/Complementary is not meant to be a substitute but an adjunct to assist in the healing process.
