Any breaking of the law by anyone operating in Barbados should be pursued relentlessly by the authorities with the objective of exacting justice. The blogmaster is forced to state the obvious because of the following comment posted to the blog – The more things change: When hard wood equals hope.

So amusing that some of you are evuh so interested in drawing connections out of thin air for HOPE, but gleefully sidestep the INVESTIGATIVE report into the LOTO suggesting that he violated the Theft Act and was in a conspiracy to defraud the UDC. Hard evidence there from a DLP report and wunna ignoring it. Carry on trying to mislead people.

Observe That!

The blogmaster like many listened to the orchestrated reply by Deputy Prime Minister Santia Bradshaw during the ‘budget’ reply. It is interesting to note Bradshaw was given the task of prosecuting the matter of possible wrong doing by Thorne, no doubt the result of the constant public hammering she has been receiving concerning poor delivery from the ministries of Transportation, Water Resources, Education AND Case closed! business.

For those who missed details of the accusation the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) posted the Guyson Mayers report on social media – Barbados Underground

The accusation leveled at Thorne that he engaged in illegal activity at the UDC is a reminder of how nasty politics can get. Does any right thinking person believe the document Bradshaw waived around in parliament during the wind up to the budget miraculously appeared as she presented?

The blogmaster is reminded of the so called FBI “Official & Confidential Files” that were kept by J Edgar Hoover in his private office. Some of the files said to have recorded sensitive information on political leaders, media and other individuals who were critical of the FBI. The blogmaster is not naive to be led to believe the great revelation about Thorne was unknown to the Prime Minister and members of the BLP hierarchy. Wheel and come again!

The country waits to see the outcome of this shot across the bow of Thorne. What it has so far confirmed is that politics is a dirty business. In the case of Barbados functioning without an opposition presence in the Lower House since 2022 and one contrived in the session of parliament post 2018, it is a dangerous business.

Prime Minister Mia Mottley is the political leader of the ruling Barbados Labour Party, therefore it is understandable her political focus. However, if she wishes history to record her kindly, she should be concerned her actions and decisions do not irretrievably compromise the integrity of Barbados’ governance structure. A word to the wise should be sufficient.

Looking at the figures roughly these units will cost what a unit at Coverly sells for. Now the Coverley houses bigger and have more infrastructure in that development such as resaturants etc.

So if the lancaster house are around 700 sq ft the coverly house is just over 1000 sq ft. Plus Coverly are now offering larger units at 500,000 which I understand are just over 1200 square feet.

A few solar panels cant make no differnce here the variance is way too big. When you get up in a house costing $500,000 that cant be seen as no small man house. My point is whether its the Grotto or Lancaster, it seems to me that these houses end up costing more per square foot than a house in any development because its a government house. B or D dont matter either it seems.

What government need to do is let small builders compete for the work and offer the the same advantages like land at $2.50 a square foot for them to put the houses on. Give them a contract and the bank will lend them the money to build too.

  2. @John A

We would have to see the numbers. That said EMERA has not been paying rebates on rooftops energy generation based on current rates.

  3. Well you can thank the FTC for that

  4. John A, Coverley or Atlantic Breeze are different projects from the Grotto housing units and Lancaster project. I agree with David that “we would have to see the numbers,” rather than ‘throwing around figures to make unsubstantiated assumptions.’

  5. @ Artax

Are the numbers that unsubstantiated? Divide the amount government put in by the amount of FINISHED houses you have and you will come up with a base figure. I was driving when it was stated but i believe it was around 500,000 a house.

David can you supply thr amount the state has put up? I think Thorne said 60 million and the houses finished around 130.

Can you confirm these figures David?

  6. @John A

We have to see more granular numbers to make a meaningful analysis.

    HOPE PROGRAMME COMING SOON
    Fri, 09/18/2020 – 6:10am
THE Government intends to introduce a new $250 million housing programme, Home Ownership Providing Energy (HOPE), very soon.

This was proudly announced by Governor General, Dame Sandra Mason, during her recent Throne Speech.

She explained that this new housing programme will feature the construction of 1,000 affordable homes intended to be offered to police, nurses, teachers and other civil servants who are earning $4,000 a month and under.

Lands at Todds plantation near Four Roads and other lands near Chancery Lane have been identified as the location for the first 200 homes.

“The total cost of the scheme is over $250 million with the Government putting in $40 million. Mortgages on the homes will be less than the cost of renting similar-sized homes,” she said.

“All homes will be energy-efficient and solar-powered. The way the scheme will achieve that is by the Government using the $40 million in the Housing Credit Fund, plus lands given to it through planning gains. These are achieved when developers give land for affordable housing in return for receiving planning permission on a major development project.

“Small builders who can prove they can build to the right specifications will be given priority in the awarding of the HOPE housing construction contracts. HOPE offers a real opportunity for home ownership and expands the concept of Barbadians as a property owning people, with all the benefits that come with property ownership.”

Dame Sandra explained that the HOPE scheme would operate in such a way that the cost of land, mortgages, and construction will be reduced and real value will be given to purchasers who will get land worth $20 or more per square foot, for no more than $12 per square foot.

She stated that included in HOPE will be a training programme for women in construction fields such as electrical wiring, painting, tiling, and related fields to increase their access to jobs.

  7. @ David

So Basically the plan was to produce 1000 house for 250 million including land. So a house would be $250,000.

But so far Thorne say we spend 61 million and got 130 odd house to show for it. Divide money spent by houses built and we the tax payers, pay $469000 rougly for a house. That is a 87% cost overrun on what was proposed!

Now you could wait pun this report or the next one, but unless Thorne Figures wrong this is where we are so far!

  8. People here actually believe that the $60M has already been spent? Wow!

  9. If you listen to CEO Tamara (FB video) it is clear the original plan has changed.

  10. @ Enuff March 25, 2024 at 5:07 pm

“People here actually believe that the $60M has already been spent? Wow!”
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Karama is one ‘Son of a B(itch)’! Isn’t that so, Enuff?

That $60 M must have ended up in MAM’s Big Red Bag.

Why don’t you go and look for it there? Or are you afraid of what the Auditor G will find which could lead to the completion of construction of condominiums near to the Graeme Hall swamp.

  11. @ Enuf

Tell your people to publish the receivables and payables with current bank balance if you want to challenge it and claim it aint spend.

    Oh wait you cant !

  12. @ David

The above is me i went typing 2 things at once. Lol

  13. How Enuff defending HOPE and the PM said she waiting for the report?

  14. Look lets not go down the B and D road. Let us accept that when it comes to government projects ALL parties lack the checks and balances to ensure the tax payer is protected. It is unfortunate, but one only has to look back and see what has occured in the past.

We start out with good intentions but our weakness is a lack of controls.

  15. @ David

The PM did the right thing. She said she would have to look into it. The “Hope” is that the entity will have up to date audited financials so she can see what the true financial position is in terms of the 60M we are out of pocket. Its not as simply as saying ” yes i got 20 million of it still in my cheque book” if you got 25 million in payables on the books.

So in other words if the $61 million has built 130 homes thats one thing. If the $61 million built 130 homes but owes 20 million to suppliers thats a different story.

  16. @ Sargeant March 25, 2024 at 2:25 pm
“The AG has been tasked with investigating Thorne and the PM has promised an inquiry into HOPE, someone must know where the bodies are buried but HOPE springs eternal.”
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

What Constitutional authority does an MP have to ask the AG to ‘instruct’ the CoP to ‘revisit’ a file on any criminal matters in Barbados?

Why isn’t that same MP asking the same AG to revisit the Donvillegate affair to establish if any of the Laws of Barbados has been broken?

Shouldn’t that same MP be looking into the mirror of morality and- as a symbol of contrition for being accused of similar financial infelicities- repeat the precept: ‘Those who are without sin, cast the first stone’?

  17. @John A

Listen from 10.38 oh the video. The PM explains the 60 million, it came from the Housing Revolving Fund.

  18. @ Miller
In which Mafia is the boss ‘without sin’ …or even thusly accused?

Skippa, the WHOLE point of being a mafia boss is to be KNOWN to be sinful…

  19. David
My bad. I swore I heard in the debate that the receipt of the $60M doesn’t mean all was spent.

  20. Bushie

What about the Christian mafia like you, the Lord’s Resistance Army of Joseph Kony from Uganda and its offshoot right here in Barbados that you feckers, by stealth, are trying to bring to political power.

  21. https://youtu.be/kBe4pH44-7g?si=s_nawUQy3AuVosjb

Senegal has a new young president Maye and he’s following the revolutionary movement within the Francophone Afrikan countries for decolonisation, as a practical and complete matter. Barbados needs this. Not more Christian rassoul!

    Great!

But in Barbados we now have the rise of religious zealots, now led by Ralph Thorne, determined to go in reverse.

For them Whiteness and the colonialism given by Christianity of an evangelical, racist American, capitalist, construction is best imposed at this time.

We’ve seen Thorne walking around from chapel to church having all kinds of Christian asshole preachers touch him up as though witchcraft is being worked.

We’ve heard some rassoul preacher called Ferdinand, on Africa Bridge, talking the White, racist, christian, capitalist, American, canard about the Chinese in relationship to a visit of officials of the Chinese Communist Party, brought to Barbados on government business. Yet Thorne talks fuckeries about democratic-socialism.

We’ve had to endure the torture of Ralph Thorne quoting a fucking Bible, a book replete with lies, from gen to rev. For a man who has long thought of himself as the smartest guy in the room, is this the best you could have done?

Right here, we’ve seen Bushie, a Christian fascist, defend Thorne alone as a politician. This rassoul Christian by stealth has very seldom openly supported any other politician of any hew.

But the born again fucker Ralph Thorne gets his blessing.

We assess that Ralph Thorne is either knowingly or unknowingly, unwittingly, an agent for external colonial forces, like the International Republican Institute, whose task is to interfere within the internal affairs of countries, it is one ot the agencies now doing the work which the CIA previously did.

What deh fuck is wrong with the Bajan mind. The older these people get the more ignorant they become. And this is happening when the West is collapsing. At a time when all these Christian lies are easily provable so to be. Lies!

We sentence Ralph Thorne and his terrorist, Christian friends to the death so richly deserved.
