A poem by Barbados cultural ambassador, Anthony ‘Gabby’ Carter, on the death of
Elizabeth Windsor, queen of England has generated unwarranted criticism from
certain quarters on the island. The poem, reprinted below, points out some truths
about the British monarch and her relationship to the crimes of British colonialism.

For those with a strong allegiance to British colonialism, these truths were a bitter pill
to swallow and so, just like Malcolm X described, they jumped to the defence of their
colonial ‘massa’. Local media reported that some people labelled the poem as
“disrespectful”, “distasteful” and “uncivilised” while others demanded that the
Barbados government revoke Gabby’s National Honour status if he does not
apologise for penning the poem. Guy Hewitt, former Barbados High Commissioner to
the United Kingdom and recent contender for leadership of the opposition
Democratic Labour Party is reported as having strongly condemned the poem and
described it as bringing dishonour to Barbados. He is also reported to have stated
that not only was the poem in poor taste but that it also, “displayed Gabby’s
ignorance of the role of a constitutional monarchy, the history of the Commonwealth
of Nations and the late Queen’s role in it.”

In reality, it is those who are attacking Gabby and his poem who are bringing
dishonour on the country. Even as the country is trying to step forward as a new
republic, they are trying to honour and glorify its monarchical past under which the
African descendants were enslaved and subjected to every indignity under Britain’s
colonial apartheid. Those who want to defend Britain’s colonial crimes against the
people of Barbados but lack the courage to do so openly, try to frame the issue as
one of respect for the dead. But let Vladimir Putin die suddenly tomorrow and you
will see how much they believe in not speaking ill of the dead. How exactly was this
respect for the dead demonstrated on the death of Muammar Gadhafi, Robert
Mugabe or any other political leader that came into conflict with British colonialism?
No, this has nothing to do with respecting the dead and everything to do with
defending Britain’s colonial crimes.

Those who claim that Gabby doesn’t understand “the role of a constitutional
monarchy, the history of the Commonwealth of Nations and the late Queen’s role in
it” demonstrate with this statement that they are the ones who are ignorant of
Britain’s colonialist political system and the role that its monarchy and royal family
play in this oppressive arrangement. If Guy Hewitt’s words have been accurately
reported in the media, he has a lot of explaining to do to the people of Barbados.
Why is someone who aspires to political leadership in our country condoning and
justifying Britain’s colonial crimes against our people? Why is he attempting to falsify
history in order to justify these crimes? What type of political leadership can such an
individual provide?

Gabby is right and his poem expresses the sentiments of many Bajans. We need to
raise our voices and make this clear so that those trapped in mental slavery
understand that they’re not going to be able to drag us back or stop our forward
march.

GOOD RIDDANCE TO RUBBISH

She was over there in Africa
When she get de news
She father dead
She’ll be de British Head
No hesitation
No excuse !
There she was
Age twenty one
In the prime of her health
Flying home
Not to roam
But to Queen of the Commonwealth !
Queen of all of India
And New Zealand too
Canada and Australia
Mixed up in de brew
The English – speaking Caribbean
Will now become her tool
Over all these places
Young Lizzy will Rule !
All their natural resources
She hoarded
With an Iron Fist
Britania kept on rolling
Lizzy did see to this!
This quiet
Wicked Woman
Never lifted a hand
To help bring Reparations
To any Caribbean land

She stood in silence
( And full support )
When one Winston Churchill
Killed millions of poor Indians
Oh what a bitter pill !
She never uttered a single word
Against that Peta Botha
Whose Apartheid Regime
Unleashed its killer Beam
On the Blacks of South Africa
She inherited millions of pounds
From the gains of slavery
Yet she allowed each colony
To wallow in poverty
Seventy five
Long hard years
This Monarch Liz did Reign
She made sure her colonies
Made no economic gain
A few hours ago
We got the news
No lies
Fakes news or tricks
That Lizzy
Queen of England died
At the age of ninety six
I can’t offer no sympathy
I’ve never been a hypocrite
Her son Charlie
Is sure to be

Sitting where she did sit
At last !
He will become the Monarch
The British Ruler
The King !
If he brings us Reparations
Then I will support him !

  1. Cuhdear Bajan,

I see that you have dismissed our resident Trumpists with great aplomb!

Except that since Trump and Putin are friends, you should request respect not for a dead Putin but for a dead Joe Biden.

    Or a dead Obama.

Do not make their task so easy!

  2. Northern Observer,

I thought you would be above that white man’s dig.

Does Charles care if Gabby supports him? Maybe not.

But this statement is more geared towards Hewitt and us, explaining how we should relate to the monarchy and even the Commonwealth!

Would Charles like to preside over the demise of the last vestige of empire?

Gabby has made the news in America and Britain, sooooooooooo….

Perhaps you should rethink your position. Gabby may become more important than you can give a “lil black Bajan” credit for.

  3. What guy did wrong was to apologize for all of Barbados. There are a number of us who do not wish to shelter under his cloak.

    Two other unconnected points
    1) The sources he cited were so hooked into the system that their favorable comments are almost irrelevant.
    2) The queen’s support for the struggle for equality in South Africa has undergone some washing to present her in a more favorable light.

  4. To Guy Hewitt, I would pose one question- did the queen use her influence during the Windrush Scandal. The prime minister has an audience with her every week.

Don’t tell me she has no influence!

““We have many many black Barbadians who share Hewitt’s view.””

of course, can’t miss them, the Slaves “cicilized” by colonial savages……a ton of those useless breathers exist in Barbados and across the region…

someone made the mistake of giving that pretentious fraud….who ran into #10 ABLAZE and drooling for recognition, a space in barbadostoday to post SHITE,

he started off with the Windrush criminal act..against Afrikans where he would have us believe he actually did something when Windrush victims are STILL SUFFERING, BUT YA WON’T hear the pretender mention any of that…

don’t want those types anywhere near my grands or family….

After Mugabe died the media DEMONIZED HIM repeatedly, they still do….and ya won’t hear a peep from the colonial Slaves…don’t know who that CLOWN, that FRAUD believes he is speaking for…don’t know what commonwealth success the LIAR is talking about….SUCCESS FOR WHOM…

Well, well, well. The spirit of Uncle Tom is still alive. Mr Hewitt please do not speak on my behalf. If you so love the mother country you should migrate there and join your kids. Another MF sellout.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    So, who was Uncle Tom?

He was a fictional character based on an actual slave about whom the author had heard.

Uncle Tom was in fact Josiah Henson, slave and Christian.

Josiah Henson made it to Canada which because it was British had no slavery as it had been abolished a generation earlier.

Now the Slaves are awake, now that everyone knows WHO and WHAT THEY ARE……wonder what’s next for them..

look what it took to get them up and exposing themselves……they have no ancestral LOYALTY and no SHAME…..that’s why they HAD TO come out, could not hide it anymore…

TLSN….they twisted the Uncle Tom truths, like they TWIST EVERYTHING ELSE to benefit themselves…they actually LIED on that man, as they are accustomed to lying on Afrikans and Afrika…

  10. One can only smile at the shameless dichotomy in which we find ourselves. Like I said it’s always the messenger and not the message. For over fifty years calls have been made and the sentiments expressed by Dr. Carter, with which I agree have been made repeatedly.
What is absolutely confounding is that we bestowed our highest National award on the woman’s son , whom we all knew was going to be her successor.
In my estimation this travesty was no less , when put in objective context, than what Guy Hewitt has said and his adulation of the woman.
To this day, I find great difficulty in believing that we were apparently getting rid of the queen but elevating the new King.
Hewitt’s views are his and they represent the classic colonialist thinking but they do not represent Barbados but the current High Commissioner when he speaks , speaks as the country’s representative.
When the new King was given our highest National award it was done so on the behalf of all citizens because it was bestowed by the government.
And that’s the dichotomy and we can just jump up and wipe shame from half of our faces because it is convenient and feels better.
The decision to bestow the highest honour of our country on King Charles 111 must go down in history as a monumental act of National ignominy .And in my opinion deserved just as much condemnation as that now being correctly directed at Hewitt. In many ways both actions are representative of the same colonialist thinking.
But as always it’s the messenger and not the message.
One of these a very astute young primary school student will ask a very simple question: why was prince Charles now King Charles 111 given our highest National honor . I wish that teacher all the best with his or her answer.
One thing is certain many of us grew up stupid under the Union Jack but we are really pretty comedic under the broken trident.
    Peace

  11. This is a good read (Google it)
Cloud of colonialism hangs over Queen Elizabeth’s legacy in Africa

It adds some depth to the discussion. However, I cannot get the idea of Elizabeth keeping her head below the parapet when the fight is ongoing. She emerges and greets the winner when the coast is clear. Not a model of heroism

    Grasshopper

You may not have yet reached this realisation but Africa is comprised of several countries, many in the Commonwealth which is an organisation of which the Queen was the titular head!!!

A person living in Nigeria their whole life knows nothing of Egypt and vice versa.

The Queen on the other hand has visited many countries in Africa, in fact all the countries of the Commonwealth, and so obviously “has seen more of Africa than almost anybody”

Do you think Ckarles III should claim his African ANCESTRY?

“The suggestion that Queen Charlotte was black implies that her granddaughter (Queen Victoria) and her great-great-great-great-granddaughter (Queen Elizabeth II) had African forebears. Perhaps, instead of just being a boring bunch of semi-inbred white stiffs, our royal family becomes much more interesting. Maybe – and this is just a theory – the Windsors would do well to claim their African heritage: it might be a PR coup, one that would strengthen the bonds of our queen’s beloved Commonwealth.”

  20. The question is not if she has seen more of Africa as she drove by the natives in the imperial motorcade.

If she saw more of Africa than anybody else, then she saw more of the damage that Elizabeth I caused as they extracted her great wealth than anybody else.

So the question is – what did she do when she saw more of the damage the extraction of her great wealth had done to the Africa that she saw more of than anybody else?

And the answer is – SHE ENJOYED IT!

John…your IGNORANCE knows no bounds…..you did the genetic test….you had an Afrikan grandfather….so of course your percentages of Afrikan ancestry would be at least 20% or more…

if Elizabeth et al. has more than 5% ancestry, due to all those genetic changes and familial blood sharing….it was reduced to very little, NOTHING or don’t exist at all..

..i have literally tens of thousands of white cousins who many have only 1-3% Afrikan blood….MOST HAVE NONE….but they are still MY COUSINS..

  26. Dear John,
I am politely declining your invitation to go down a rabbit hole with you.

Someone has already expanded on the possible meaning of the word see. It can be much more than ‘to look at with two big eyeballs’.

Do you think a man who says “I have seen it all” means that he has looked behind in every nook and cranny, under every rock ….

I do not have the original context, but here is a next possible meaning (poetic license) of her words …
‘Don’t tell me about suffering or exploitation in Africa. I’ve been there. I’ve seen it all. I know Africa. Know your place’

Would it be fair to conclude that those whose idea this was were themselves seeking to worship in church and chapel at the same time. Or is the equalization of these imprecise?. Is a halfway house the final port of call?

And if such uncertainty exists at the centre, could that explain the seemingly hodge-podge approach given to the republicanism project. For example, the declaration and implementation before the country was properly prepared. Meaning, public consultation and a new constitution.

Suggest the extent to which a perceived national ambivalence will determine outcomes.

Time for our Supreme Leader to revoke Hewitt’s British citizenship and dismantle the DLP as a colonialist-imperialist foreign organisation. After all, Hewitt doesn’t need our citizenship. He is British, after all.

  42. @ Pacha
Those of us who supported becoming a republic must conclude that the action of giving King Charles 111 our highest National award, was to send a message that we were only pretending to cut ties.
However we put it , by that action we endorsed and legitimized his mother; him and slavery.
I think that Dr. Carter has put them all in a tailspin because they really can’t touch him. Remember how they came out against the Dub artistes.
They are now trying to go after Hewitt and he deserves it , but how can they actually go after him while giving King Charles 111 a pass.
I therefore submit that they are more in step with Hewitt .than they are with Dr. Carter and that is the conundrum.
We have to wait and see if anybody on high will attempt to censor Dr. Carter.
This ambivalence is now part and parcel of why we don’t have a national agenda.
All of this would be laughable if it were not so utterly shameful.
You are current they wanted to be in church and chapel. You know they are depending on the people coming here from England as tourists.
Ye Sir as @ WURA says Dr. Carter has called their bluff and they can’t do a ting about um. At least not publicly. If the apologists touch him all he’ll gine brek loose.
